General Motors is in a dispute with critics regarding its upcoming Chevy Volt, which the automaker touts as an all-electric car but critics call it a plug-in hybrid. Critics from publications such as Edmunds.com, Popular Mechanics, and Motor Trend magazine contend that the onboard gasoline engine kicks in on the Volt during a hard acceleration, and that makes it a hybrid. GM calls the Volt an "extended range electric vehicle." The Volt features a gasoline engine which acts as a generator for the batteries that power the electric motor. GM adds that it is the electric motor that drives the wheels and not the gasoline engine, which is there to charge the batteries as the car is driving and extend its driving range. But the engine can also drive a secondary generator which provides power directly to the motor. The Toyota Prius has a similar powertrain setup, and is labelled a hybrid. Its gasoline engine fuels a direct-drive generator that powers the electric motor which drives the wheels. The Detroit automaker had previously gotten in trouble with critics when it rated the Volt's mileage at 230 miles per gallon . The Environment Protection Agency, the arm of the United States federal government which rates vehicle mileage, refused to accept the rating. Mileage figures on electric cars can vary on a wide range as it depends a lot on driving habits. Driven aggressively, the batteries on an electric car can be run down rapidly. Edmunds.com has been particularly harsh against GM and accused GM of lying. One of its stories has this title: "GM Lied: Chevy Volt is not a true EV." The Chevrolet Volt goes on sale in the United States next month. A Singapore launch date has not been confirmed yet.

General Motors is trying to ease buyers concerns about battery life by announcing it will guarantee the upcoming Chevrolet Volt's lithium-ion battery pack for 100,000 miles or a period of eight-years, whichever comes first. In addition, GM noted that the warranty will be transferable at no cost to a new owner should a Volt buyer decide to sell his car. According to the Detroit automaker, "it's the automotive industry's longest, most comprehensive battery warranty for an electric vehicle". The Volt's battery warranty covers all 161 battery components and that's a pretty comprehensive thing for buyers as the cost of the 400 pound battery has been estimated to be between US$8,000 to US$10,000. The car uses a small gasoline engine to produce electricity once the battery is depleted. Perhaps the Honda CRZ and Toyota Prius should follow Chevrolet

The Chevrolet Volt concept electric vehicle is a four-passenger, battery-powered car that features GM's first use of the new E-flex electric propulsion system designed to provide flexibility in the choice of fuel sources for electric vehicles of the future. "At GM we believe tomorrow's automobiles must be flexible enough to accommodate many different energy sources," explained Rick Wagoner, chairman and CEO, General Motors Corporation. "And a key part of that flexibility will be enabled by the development of electrically driven cars." Wagoner explained the E-flex is GM's next-generation electric propulsion system that will always use an electric motor to power the wheels but can be configured to use electricity produced by a fuel cell, a generator powered by an engine, or from a battery that is charged from the power grid. The lithium-ion battery in the Volt can be fully charged by plugging it into a 110-volt outlet for approximately six hours per day. When it is fully charged, the Volt offers a driving range of 40 miles. To increase the useful range of the Volt, it includes a 1.0-liter 3-cylinder turbocharged engine that operates at a constant speed to create electricity and charge the battery. The engine is designed to run on E85 fuel, which is a blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. The engine does not power the vehicle, it is only used to produce electricity to recharge the battery and only the electric motor powers the vehicle. Robert A. Lutz, GM vice chairman explained that in addition to showcasing the E-flex propulsion system, the Volt was designed to show that environmentally conscious vehicles can also look good. While it features cutting edge technology, the Volt is also a design study. While the Volt is a four-door, four-passenger sedan it really looks more like a sleek sports car with classic Chevrolet design elements reminiscent of both Camaro and Corvette. Inside the Volt combines innovative materials and ambient light for a light and airy feel. "First and foremost, this is an advanced technology vehicle that uses little to no fuel at all. But we didn't see any reason why that should compromise its design," said Anne Asensio, executive director, GM Design. Asensio led the design team that created the Volt concept, with designs solicited from GM's studios around the world.

Hi all Chevy owners, recently came across tis Raizin Volt. Stablizer thing, as i just brought my car, therefore dun dare to fix scare void warrenty. Hence I hereby have afew Qns....Pls kindly assist.. 1) Have any of you fix tis b4? 2)wats the advatage and disadv of it? 3) will it cause any fault to my car? 4) will it void the warrenty? hi all Understand that some bros here quite garang, ever DIY install gauges. My project more modest, just a volt gauge (used). Should be quite simple rite?... but i got some queries : 1. The volt gauge comes with 4 wires already connected. These are connected at terminals at the back labelled "+" and "-" (one each) and "L" (one pair). There is also one terminal labelled "S" but has no wire. The "L" pair i'm guessing shld be for lighting (which i will tap from headlight dimmer switch) and the other two for signal input (which i will tap from 12V socket). I can test out the pre-connected wires but does anyone know what is "S" for? 2. I also got a component about slightly smaller than 1 cubic cm in size. Dunno what it's for, but the previous user told me it is connected as part of the installation. There are 2 pairs of wires connected to it. From the looks of it, was cut from wires connectting to "L". What is this component for and shld i use it? BTW this is a Swoosh volt gauge. Any help appreciated. Thanks! cheers
