  1. Hi MCFers and frequent travellers, Want to ask if the duty-free liquor and beer at Changi Airport is really the cheapest and best-est as often claimed by DFS itself (of course) and many Singaporeans who only buy from there when they return from overseas? I have always been under that impression and thus NEVER EVER look at duty-free shops at overseas airports but quai quai (dutifully) wait till I have landed at Changi to duly file into DFS Changi to buy my quota. Don't travel frequently so blur in this area. Any frequent MCF-travellers can shed insights? Or have I been snooked by DFS for the longest time ever?

Mr Nur Iskandar Magiar helped redirect traffic and was trying to free two people pinned under a trailer when he was hit by a taxi. The impact caused the 41-year-old to be flung about 25m before he landed on a grassy patch in the road divider. He sustained head and back injuries and was rushed to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. 7. ...thing is, will the maid do it for him?? http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg...n_who_made.html SAF will take appropriate action against serviceman who made maid carry backpackEnraged26%Shiok!26%LOL!29%So sad4%Sure or not?1%Bochup14%The Singapore Armed Forces says it will investigate the case of a national serviceman who had apparently made his maid carry his backpack, and take the appropriate action. The response came after a photo was posted in STOMP, showing a young man dressed in army fatigues walking in front of a woman carrying what seemed to be his backpack. The story was later picked up by The Straits Times. A Ministry of Defence spokesman said in response to the report in The Straits Times that "the SAF takes a serious view of the conduct of its servicemen in public" and that it will investigate and take the appropriate action. The story had sparked a debate among STOMPers, on whether Gen Y soldiers are too 'soft', 'spoilt' and 'pampered'. There are some, however, who wondered if a shoulder injury had prompted the 'maid' to carry the backpack for the serviceman.

  10. A CAR importer was fined $95,000 for fraudulent evasion of duty and GST and giving false information to Customs officers to bring in a brand new Porsche Cayman car. Soh Chee Kwang, 31, admitted evading duty and Goods and Services Tax amounting to $9,622 on June 13 and was convicted of one count each of fraudulent evasion of duty and GST, and two counts of furnishing information to Customs officers on Monday. In his declaration to Customs on April 26 to get a Customs permit for the import of the Porsche Cayman from Germany into Singapore, Soh had stated that the value of the car was 28,000 euros (S$59,300) and submitted supporting documents to substantiate this. The car arrived on May 31. Singapore Customs' investigations revealed that the supporting documents provided by Soh were falsified. He had on two separate occasions on May 12 and 13 provided falsified documents to substantiate a lower false purchase value for the motor vehicle. Subsequent investigations revealed that the actual invoice value of the car paid for by Soh to the supplier in Germany was 48,710 euros, which is 20,710 euros higher than the value of 28,000 euros declared by Soh. Soh was arrested on June 12 June and charged. On Mondy, he was fined $60,000 and $25,000 for fraudulent evasion of $6,776.53 in duty and $2,846.14 in GST respectively. On the two counts of furnishing false information, he was fined $5,000 each. Anyone found guilty of fraudulent evasion of duties or GST can be fined up to 20 times the amount of duties and GST evaded or in default a jail sentence. Giving false information and furnishing false documents to Customs officers can land an offender a fine of up to $5,000 or jail term of up to 12 months, or both. Singapore Got LAW Dun PLAY PLAY

  13. SINGAPORE: The government has no plans to lower the rate of petrol duty despite higher oil prices. Minister of State for Finance and Transport Lim Hwee Hua said this is because petrol duty is a vehicular usage tax aimed at discouraging the excessive use of cars and promoting the greater use of public transport, and these objectives remain relevant. Mrs Lim was replying to a question posed by MP for Aljunied GRC, Mrs Cynthia Phua, in parliament on Friday. Mrs Phua had asked if the government would review its tax policy on petrol, diesel and natural gas to help reduce business costs for transport operators, businesses, as well as commuters. Mrs Lim explained that higher pump prices do not mean that the government gets to collect more petrol duties. She said: "The excise duty on petroleum is imposed on volumetric bases of 41 cents a litre for 92 and 95-octane petrol, and 44 cents a litre for petrol rated 97-octane and above. The excise duty is therefore a fixed sum per litre of petrol." There is no excise duty on diesel, fuel oil and natural gas used for generating power.
