  2. Campaign banners in Braddell Road (above) are put up to discourage actions such as this - a motorist using his phone while driving in Unity Street yesterday. More than 400 banners promoting responsible use of mobile phones while driving have been put up along more than 10 roads across Singapore. The number of motorists booked for using their mobile phones while driving has risen sharply. In just nine months this year, the Traffic Police issued 2,755 summonses for the offence, compared to 1,893 summons over the same period last year. There was a 61.5 per cent spike in summonses issued from July to September, from the 1,705 issued up to June."Using a mobile phone while driving affects a driver's ability to control his vehicle and to react to potential hazards on the roads. It makes the driver more vulnerable to accidents, posing a danger to himself and even other road users," a Traffic Police spokesman told the local paper. Under the Road Traffic Act, first time phone-and-drive offenders can be fined up to $1,000, or jailed for up to six months, or both, while repeat offenders will be charged with up to double the penalty. Additionally all offenders will receive 12 demerit points while their mobile phones will be seized by the Traffic Police for investigations. However, it is not an offence to use the mobile phone when the vehicle is stationary. To tackle the problem, Samsung has launched a road safety campaign from mid-October - supported by the Traffic Police. More than 400 banners have been put up along more than 10 roads in Singapore to promote responsible use of mobile phones while driving. Samsung's 'The road comes first' campaign aims to drive home key messages, like - 'Drive. Don't text' and 'Drive. Don't call'. Additionally, Samsung has launched a Facebook application, where it requests motorists to pledge not to use their mobile phones while driving. The firm is also planning to introduce an application called 'Eyes on the Road' to aid motorists turn off their mobile phones when they are behind the wheel. "This 'always-on' mentality can mean that people use their smartphones at inappropriate times, such as when driving. As the mobile industry leader, Samsung is taking the responsibility to encourage drivers to put aside their phones while driving, and focus on the roads," said Ms Irene Samsung Asia's Vice President of marketing. 3. This article appeared in the papers today. Quite unusual, NEA had to go to court to ACQUIT the company they wanted to charge..... http://www.singaporelawwatch.sg/slw/headlinesnews/37420-nea-asks-court-to-acquit-firm-booked-over-toxic-material.html?utm_source=rss%20subscription&utm_medium=rss NEA asks court to 'acquit' firm booked over 'toxic' material THE National Environment Agency (NEA) has asked a court to effectively acquit a firm that the agency had booked last year for moving harmful material illegally. Galaxy Logistics had faced a fine of up to $30,000 for transporting a hazardous chemical outside approved hours. Without elaborating, the NEA prosecutor had asked a district court on Feb 5 to grant Galaxy a discharge amounting to an acquittal. In reply to queries from The Straits Times, NEA said an offence involving a few parties had been committed as hazardous substances were found to have been transported outside stipulated hours. NEA did not specify who the other parties were but said: "Galaxy Logistics was charged for its role in the offence but NEA has withdrawn the charge based on further evidence. NEA is continuing with its investigations and will take appropriate legal action. Public safety remains our paramount concern." However, Galaxy's defence counsel Christopher Bridges said he did not produce any new evidence in the pre-trial conferences. Instead, he had argued that the prosecution had not been able to provide any legislation that specifically stated that the chemical transported was a hazardous material. According to court documents, Galaxy was transporting a detergent known as Divosan Active SU 388 VTS in a truck along Pioneer Road just past midnight on Oct 2, 2012. The detergent contains peracetic acid, which NEA said was hazardous. NEA issued a summons to the firm in May last year for moving the material outside the prescribed hours of between 7am and 7pm. Galaxy was alleged to have committed an offence as NEA said peracetic acid was listed as hazardous in the Second Schedule of the Environmental Protection and Management Act (EPMA) as well as the Schedule of Environmental Protection and Management (Hazardous Substances) Regulations. However, Mr Bridges said there was no reference to peracetic acid in both lists. He also said it would be unreasonable to read "organic peroxides" in the EPMA to include all types of organic peroxides. There were different classes of organic peroxides and "it would not be Parliament's intention to include non-hazardous organic peroxides into the purview of the regulations and the EPMA", he said. The charge was "too arbitrary and hence defective as peracetic acid is not clearly and explicitly listed... as a hazardous substance", he added.
  4. Just to share my experience and alert all drivers. Pardon me for the lengthy post. And to those who like to comment only blame me cause of my mistake, or being stupid to waste $ on mods, save your breadth. It's not meant to debate on allowing illegal mods but simply to share with other drivers whose car are not stock to take note on. Hope it can be viewed constructively as LTA seem to be having less leeway and flexibility in the system. And with the high COE pricing, car owners are even being clapmed down more tightly. I wonder whats the revenue of LTA annually. A non-profit driven authority can be earning so much, I wonder wonder wonder... Just a brief of my incidents, In November, I was stopped in Lavender St and booked for my aftermarket number plate. Officer in-charge claim the material is not acceptable (laser cut) thus he booked me. I explained that onemotoring website guidelines only specify regarding font size and not material of number plate used and since its is clearly visible comapred to those faded off lorry number plates. He told me to write in to appeal instead as it is his job. I did not want to argue. I wrote in to appeal to LTA after receiving the summon on the guidelines for an aftermarket number plate as the details in website is vague and only measurement of fonts is mentioned. LTA only replied with a standard template informing me details available in website though I clearly asked for clearer specifications guidelines so I can re-order a "complaint" number plate. Not surprisingly, they did not bother to entertain my appeal for waiver. Neither did they provide more information to answer my queries. In December, I was stopped in CTE and guided to road chevrons with heavy traffic during that time. Officer in-charge told me my number plate did not comply to their standards. He took out a ruler and measured the fonts and its a little smaller than required. He took effort to explain to me that the smaller font size is the reason my number plate did not meet the standards. He also inform me that my DRL is not allowed even though its not switched on. I notify him that I was just book earlier the previous month and only made payment for the offence last week via AXS and will be changing soon as I wrote in to LTA for advise on the type of number plates they allow to be fitted, pleading for leniency. He replied that he will be giving me a verbal warning but also input into the system so the next officer who spotted me with this will issue me a summon. I thanked him for his graciousness. Moving on, I happily forgotten or rather did not bother to change my number plate as I was awaiting LTA reply on the guidelines (yes, I did not want to spend $ doing up another number plate that is non-complaint) which never came back... On 1 Feb, I received a registered mail from LTA. I picked up the letter and realised that I have been issued a summon for the offence committed in early December in CTE. Then I realised that I was "played out" by the LTA officer. But what I was curious is what took so long for the letter to come as the issue date is 30 Jan, not the usual 1-2weeks. Is it because of quota or target that the LTA officer decided to only submit my case in Jan? Today, I was stopped by another LTA for the same thing, my number plate. I showed him my summon received few days back and told him I already receive it and will duly change 1 as I was initially waiting for LTA email reply. He told me that now that he see it again, he will need to summon me again too. He referred to the summon (for number plate and DRL) and proceeded to tell me he will summon likewise. He carried on to ask if my sunshade is too big and wanted to summon me for it. I was surprised as it came as a default from the dealer, KAH motor. Hearing that he then claim that he will give me a chance but the shades on my windows are also not allowed while driving and to be only to be used during parking. I explained that the design of the shades only covers the rear half of front windows, thus 1st half is not blocked. This is designed for use when driving so it does not cause obstruction or danger to driver's view. He also passed me on that. He then elaborated that I can appeal to LTA if I want. I was rushing for time and took my license and IC back from him and left. Though some may be telling me to shut up and just pay for fines, I am more interested to find out if the LTA officers has a standard procedure or passed proper training to know about LTA guidelines. They always reply with an open-ended answer refusing to provide clear boundary as to what is legal and what is not. Many areas seem greyed; intentionally or unitentionally. A summon can reach my place only 2 months later though officer previously informed that its only a verbal warning. I mean that they can simply summon instead of playing dirty tricks like this.. Zzz Can anyone also firmly knows if laser cut number plates are allowed by LTA if the font type and size are within their specifications? Many thanks for reading. Your views and comments is appreciated.
  5. Last night on the way back home walking along the carpark, I saw a lady in uniform near my car. She was scribbling something on a note and I thought "Seow liao, tio booked". She saw me and said "Your car arhh? Why park on the motorcycle lot? I've booked you but you go appeal, okay? "Why appeal leh? I kena I pay lor" I said. The problem was that the carpark at our neighbourhood was undergoing major overhaul and it is impossible to park legally if you come back very late at night. The whole carpark will be full and there'll be lots of cars parked in all sorts of places, double yellow line, along the kerb, at bends, motorcycle lots (like me) and disabled lots as well. "Ohh, I know this carpark is under renovation and we try not to book those on season parking one . . you go appeal lah" she repeated. "Then you might as well don't book me since you know all these and you look, only 1 motorbike in this 24 lots for motorcycle . . . at night at most got 4-5 only leh" "But you see huh, so many empty lots . . . I counted 32 altogether, how come you park here?" she said. "Miss, if at night got 32 lots you think I will park here? I just came back from work you know? Aiyah, nevermind lah, pass me the ticket I'll pay the fine. Thank you." "You go appeal lah, somebody complain say you park here" "Aiyoh! I say nevermind lor. Pass me the summon" I reached out for it. "I clip here on your car" Wah lao, I felt like asking her if she was a pinoy Weaaaahhhhh!

  7. Hey guys, I had parked my vehicle in front of a coffeeshop, enjoying my weekly coffee sips. The car was in sight at all times. One week later, I received a letter from TP which has fined me $70. As the car was right in front of me, it means that fatimah must have booked me from a distance, and do not even dare to place it on my windscreen. Is that their normal practice? Any bros can share how to appeal to LTA?

  13. Guys, Just wanna share my joy for finally deciding to book the new Opel Astra 1.6MTA @ $69888! Its been at least 2 months of showroom hopping (i.e. Citroen, Ford, Opel) but finally concluded that the Astra was for me... When I first saw the Astra, I was smitten by the front and back design... soooo stylish... then came the interior... couldnt be any better... everything was slick and well laid out. The MTA was so fun to drive and I could get the hang of it within minutes! I knew I had to get it but contemplated as I liked the focus and the C4 as well. Definately no disrespect to those 2 beauties. Now, the sad thing is that I'm gonna have to trade in my 3+ year old marchie... Well, it has really served me well... Really really sad to let it go... Well, just keeping my keeping my fingers crossed for COE next wednesday! CAN'T WAIT!
  14. Toyota launching Yaris here in early 2006 By Samuel Ee - 17 November 2005 The Business Times BORNEO Motors Singapore has introduced a new Toyota model in a segment from which it withdrew almost five years ago. Orders are now being taken for the Toyota Yaris supermini, with delivery set for the latter part of Q1 2006. No price has been set for the 109hp, 1.5-litre five-door hatchback although fully refundable deposits are being accepted. But because it is likely to be slotted between the Vios and Corolla Altis sedans, expect to see a price tag in the mid-$50,000 region. The trendy model, which used to be sold as the Echo here, is Toyota's top-selling model in Europe. But like the Vios and Altis, the Yaris headed for Singapore will be sourced from Toyota Thailand. It is called the Vitz in Japan, and earlier this year, parallel importer Richburg Motors began offering a sportier version called the Toyota Vitz TRD at its MacPherson Road showroom. This high-end model from Japan costs about $80,000. The biggest attraction of the Yaris is the feeling of spaciousness in this seemingly diminutive car - the airy cabin has excellent head and shoulder room.
  15. Today's ad in Straits Times shows price reduction for all Kia vehicles. Of particular interest to us is Picanto's prices. It has dropped to $34,999. Went to check Kia's website. Picanto auto is now selling for $37,999. Sigh... We booked the car at $40,999. The worst thing is we can only collect the car in Feb next year. Also, we have not secured COE. Deposit already paid. Is there any recourse for us?
  16. Anyone out here booked the 2.0 si ? I need some personal advise.

  18. Hi All: After 1 month of intensive research (involving frens/ relatives and of coz bros of this forum) finally went to Ubi to book my AVEO 4D Sedan (A). Anyway any bros in Ubi do take note of one SE, damn clueless in his technical knowledge, told me Auto got CVT, search the whole brochure never see that mentioned. when i questioned him, he said it is not called CVT, but work similiar (of coz not as good). then he told me got Immobilizer, when i asked further, then he said it is the car alarm, which led to my question, "how does a car alarm act as an immobilizer? so when the alarm rings, the car thief will immobilize?" yeap u guess it, didnt buy from him. got a pretty good SE, Claudia, at least she is more professional and more direct. Gotten the booking and expecting to come this month end. Also she gave me upfront $500 discount plus reverse sensor, so not that bad a deal (couldnt manage to ask her absorb the 1st year insurance) Here's my details: Aveo 4D Auto standard $51988 plus Leather seat $ 900 plus Sports Rim $ 700 plus reverse sensor $ 0 Less discount -$ 500 Total $53088 The reason why i posted this up was that i am quite impressed by her direct and professional approach, so i offered to advertise this package for her. She agreed. So bro, if intented to get AVEO, quote "Benson Package" if you gotten something extra from her, let me know so i can go get from her as well 2 questions: 1. Is it worth to get sports rim? I was told the alloy wheel lighten the car a little and thus help in terms of FC 2. I didnt go for the premium package as i dont see the need to pay $400 for a 5 disc changer, i am intending to get a MP3 CD player, any lobang? The SE offer $350 to add the mp3 CD player but i will still get the standard 1 disc CD player back (no trade-in) any good deals outside that i can trade in my 1 disc player?
