  2. Some sharing. These days, I have seen that people are bored and often get himself/herself into trouble of some sorts. Is it true? I may be wrong. I sat at the coffee shop once for some while and have observed that this teenager was feeling so bored that he started to use a penknife to slice the table to make scratch marks. He seemed to be waiting for his friend and while waiting he decided to do what he did. Then I approached him to ask him to stop. He was not happy and showed me that face" mind your own business!". Then he walked away. What are your views on this ? Do share if you seen or know of people. Cheers and thank you.

  4. Seems to see more road enforcers on the road these days~ Heard from some friends say they have quota to hit, especially year end, coz they may get higher bonus if total collected amount is high. Wonder if that is true... My car park used to be about 100% full after 9pm, now even after 11pm, there are still vacant lots. A stranger got summon when he just left his car at a side road. Lady in white hid in a corner, and came out to issue summon just when he left the car and walked about a few meters away. Guy turn head to check and ran back to car. They got into a heated argument, he almost beat the lady in white... Scared perhaps, the lady took back the ticket, not sure if she will send him a "home-run" letter later or not though... They look like want to issue summons very badly...
  5. Assuming as it is. That is, CPI remains at exactly like this for the rest of your life. Yes, comfortable is subjective, driving a BnB maybe comfortable to some, but not to others. This I know, so it's up to your own definition. Not trying to judge or anything. I'm just curious about the level of expectations for the people in this forum. For me.....I think $120K should be quite reasonable. You don't have to reveal what you chose if you don't want to.

  8. So where do we stand? How many more immigrants are we taking in from now till then? This is a hard question our top dogs have to answer and will no longer be based on cold hard "end-justify-means" old way of doing things purely from economic sense of achieving an attractive GDP. From CNA: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1151560/1/.html Low fertility rate, no immigration will lead to S'pore's population decline By Tan Qiuyi | Posted: 07 September 2011 1105 hrs SINGAPORE: Singapore's resident population will decline and become extremely aged if the Total Fertility Rate (TFR) is extremely low and if there is no immigration. This is according to a landmark study on future population growth and change for Singapore published on Wednesday by the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS). The study produced four population scenarios based on varying TFR and immigration levels. The study said with TFR at 1.24 births per woman and zero net migration, Singapore's population will decline to 3.03 million in 2050. With 30,000 migrants added annually, the population projection is 4.89 million in 2050. And with 60,000 migrants added annually, the population projection is 6.76 million in 2050. The study also looked at a situation where TFR can be raised to 1.85 births per woman by 2025 with no new immigration. With such a scenario, the study said population size can still only hit 3.37 million in 2050. The ratio of working people (between the ages of 15-64) to the elderly will also decrease. For instance, with low fertility and 30,000 new residents a year, the ratio drops from 8.6 in 2005, to 2.7 in 2050. A key conclusion obtained from the study is that without immigration, the total population will decline, even if Singapore's total fertility rate rises from the current 1.15 to 1.85. The number of working people available to support each elderly person is also set to drop in all the scenarios. However, Dr Yap Mui Teng, who is a senior research fellow at Institute of Policy Studies, said immigration can reduce the dependency burden. Dr Yap said: "Under the scenario with higher net migration, there will be more people of working ages to support each elderly, compared to the scenario with low migration or scenarios with zero net migration." Amid growing concerns from the ground about overcrowding and stiffer competition from foreign labour, some asked if population growth is absolutely necessary and how much is enough. Associate Professor Paulin-Tay Straughan from the National University of Singapore said it is important for the government to determine how much population growth is needed to ensure a balance between a vibrant economy and the social health of society. She said: "That's why these projections are so important. For us to understand how the projections are made, so that as a community together, we agree that these are the opportunity costs we're willing to accept because we all want to strive for this quality of life." The government had earlier said it does not target a specific population size. The study also projected that there will be fewer young people in Singapore if fertility rate remains low. The number of young people under 14 years of age will go down by more than half from 699,000 in 2005 to 274,400 by 2050. - CNA/fa/ac

  11. SDP certainly has come a long way since the last GE. I am quite impressed with Dr Wijeysingha since the live debate he had with PM together with 11 other folks some time back. The news coverage just a while ago on him & his A-team when he put forth his thoughts on quite a few topics again was [thumbsup] His team star partners like Mr Tan & Dr Ang were also impressive with their gentlemanly behaviour. I guess confrontational style here is unpalatable to Singaporeans so it is a good thing if SDP is genuinely moving away from all that. Love to see how our MCYS minister earns his pay by defending his turf against this SDP A-Team. BTW, many of us are still bitter about the S$387m bill for the YOG... From CNA: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1124552/1/.html GE: Wijeysingha to lead SDP team in Holland-Bukit Timah By Satish Cheney | Posted: 24 April 2011 1255 hrs
  12. SINGAPORE : Observers said the drop in the number of permanent residencies granted last year reflected a change in the type of immigrants the government is trying to attract. They said the move also needs to be seen against the backdrop of recent policies aimed at tightening the inflow of foreign workers, such as raising the criteria for S-Pass holders. Economists said given Singapore's strong economic growth and full employment, the policy may lead to labour shortage. This in turn may lead to a rise in wages and also higher inflation. Manu Bhaskaran, partner, Centennial Group, said: "When wages rise, businesses will find ways to economise on labour, and that will drive productivity up. "In the longer term, that would be good for Singapore. In the short term unfortunately, it will be painful for certain businesses and certain companies." - CNA/al SOURCE: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stori...105266/1/.html why singapore so funny 1... too many FT = higher inflation too little FT = higher inflation so how to lower inflation? too many also bad too little also bad!

  17. TOKYO - A Japanese labor bureau has ruled that one of Toyota's top car engineers died from working too many hours, the latest in a string of such findings in a nation where extraordinarily long hours for some employees has long been the norm. The man who died was aged 45 and had been under severe pressure as the lead engineer in developing a hybrid version of Toyota's blockbuster Camry line, said Mikio Mizuno, the lawyer representing his wife. The man's identity is being withheld at the request of his family, who continue to live in Toyota City where the company is based. In the two months up to his death, the man averaged more than 80 hours of overtime per month, according to Mizuno. He regularly worked nights and weekends, was frequently sent abroad and was grappling with shipping a model for the pivotal North American International Auto Show in Detroit when he died of ischemic heart disease in January 2006. The man's daughter found his body at their home the day before he was to leave for the United States. The ruling was handed down June 30 and will allow his family to collect benefits from his work insurance, Mizuno said. An officer at the Aichi Labor Bureau on Wednesday confirmed the ruling, but declined to comment on the record. In a statement, Toyota Motor Corp. offered its condolences and said it would work to improve monitoring of the health of its workers. There is an effort in Japan to cut down on deaths from overwork, known as "karoshi." Such deaths have steadily increased since the Health Ministry first recognized the phenomenon in 1987. Last year, a court in central Japan ordered the government to pay compensation to Hiroko Uchino, the wife of a Toyota employee who collapsed at work and died at age 30 in 2002. She took the case to court after her application to the local labor bureau for compensation was rejected. In the company I am working now, it's a norm to work over 100hrs of OT per month....
  18. July 8, 2008 Five years? MM Lee's estimate was optimistic WITH reference to last Friday's column, 'Welcome to scary Singapore, land of four million smiles', I could not help but disagree with Ms Lynn Lee. It is nave to assume that all human beings can be trusted to do the right thing, and that we should appeal to the public by their conscience and sense of fairness. While it is ideal to strive towards a kinder and gentler society, Singaporeans must be made to realise the world is actually very brutal. Why is Singapore schizophrenic? To me, it is both a modern-day wonder and an insane attempt to push the boundary of human sociology, political science and human ingenuity. With a population of 4.6 million and no natural resources, Singapore is like a 3,000m-tall giant inverted pyramid balancing precariously on a ridiculously small footprint of less than 700 sq km. To further create instability and complexity, the population is a mixture of races, religions and cultures due to its historical immigrant origins. In some ways, Singapore's few short decades of peace may bring hope to a millennium of violence in Jerusalem. On the contrary, I feel Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew is very optimistic when he said recently that Singapore can be unscrambled in just five years. With modern telecommunications and banking infrastructure, trillions of dollars can be transferred out of Singapore in an instant if the current leaders and their policies change overnight. Singapore's economy can become an empty shell within weeks. The grim reality is that global financial investors would have no qualms in rendering us incapacitated in this fiercely competitive world. In many ways, Singapore is a failure due to its own success. Thanks to its ability to provide housing, work opportunities and good economic growth year after year in a First World environment, it is no wonder that most Singaporeans, especially those born after 1965, have bred a false sense of security, thinking modern Singapore is a creation by mother nature. Recently, opposition politician Tan Lead Shake made headlines after a tragic event in his family. But what chills the bones is the fact that in the past three elections, an average of more than 20 per cent of the electorate voted for him or anyone else who stood for election with little consideration of his credentials or abilities. Will Singapore last as long as the 3,000-year-old Great Pyramids of Giza? Very unlikely, when civilisations in history last an average of less than 500 years. But the real answer lies not just in our children but in the choice we make now to ensure a better future for them now. Syu Ying Kwok http://www.straitstimes.com/ST%2BForum/Sto...ory_255634.html hope bad karma will hit his family soon. wat a farking moron pple family die use as excuse to hamtam him. pui!
