Kudos to the construction workers and members of the public who rescued the stranded children and adults before SCDF arrived. Sad that 1 child didn't make it SINGAPORE – One child has died and 18 people have been injured after a fire broke out at a shophouse in River Valley Road on April 8. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said in a statement on Facebook that it was alerted to a fire at 278 River Valley Road at about 9.45am. A check by The Straits Times shows that this is the listed address of Tomato Cooking School, which runs cooking lessons and camps for children. A total of 15 children and four adults were taken to the hospital, SCDF said. ST understands that one child has died. When SCDF officers arrived at the scene, a fire was raging on the second and third floors of the three-storey shophouse, the statement said. “Members of the public, including construction workers, used a metal scaffolding and a ladder to reach those stranded and brought a number of them to safety,” SCDF added. SCDF officers deployed ladders to rescue those stranded on the ledge, while firefighters proceeded to the second and third floors. The fire was extinguished within 30 minutes using three water jets. About 80 people from the affected shophouse and nearby premises were evacuated. In a video posted on Facebook at about 10am, thick black smoke is seen billowing from the windows of the third floor of the building. A few people wearing high-visibility vests can be seen on a scaffolding reaching out to help those sitting on a ledge below the windows. In another video, more than 10 people, including some who appear to be children, are seen sitting on the ledge. A few of them are seen being carried down to safety by the men on the scaffolding. When ST arrived at the scene at around 10.50am, there were several police vehicles, four fire engines and a number of ambulances. The road was cordoned off by the police, though onlookers had gathered around. Speaking to ST, witnesses said there were as many as five people still inside the burning unit before SCDF officers entered the premises to rescue them. Mr Shaik Amirudin, who owns the nearby Flex Fitness studio, said he heard a loud noise before a client who was leaving the studio told him about the smoke. He quickly evacuated the premises with the rest of his clients. Seeing the children and their teachers on the building ledge, he rushed over to help and held on to the scaffolding as construction workers tried to rescue them. “The construction workers and first responders sprung into action,” said the 31-year-old. “It was like a scene out of a war zone,” he added. “There was a woman who appeared dazed, with soot on her face, shouting that there were still five children inside.” He said that he later saw multiple children, who were motionless, being carried out of the premises by SCDF officers. Mr Saran, a 33-year-old construction worker, said he and other workers ran over when they saw the smoke. “I was scared – many children were inside the unit and crying. I saw we had the scaffolding, which was something that could help,” he said, adding that they rescued about 10 children. Another construction worker, Mr Kannanthasan, 30, said he climbed the scaffolding to rescue the children and teachers, shortly before SCDF officers arrived. “We would like to thank the members of the public who assisted in the rescue of the stranded persons for their quick actions and bravery,” SCDF said in its Facebook post. The Straits Times has contacted the police for more information. The cause of the fire is under investigation. https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/fire-breaks-out-in-river-valley

The body of a 58-year-old man was found in Kallang River at about 8.10am on Friday morning. A cleaner spotted the floating body in the river near Blk 3 Beach Road. The 58-year-old, who was wearing a grey shirt, was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene. Chinese evening newspaper Shin Min Daily News said the 70-year-old cleaner had been told by his boss to go check out the river, after someone told the boss that he saw a body in the river. The cleaner told his boss and called the police after confirming that there was really a body. He told Shin Min: "When civil defence officers arrived, I saw them retrieving the body from the river with their bare hands. Last month, another old man also died in the river, and I didn't expect a similar case to happen today." http://news.asiaone.com/news/edvantage/river-valley-high-teacher-knocked-down-van-outside-school River Valley High teacher knocked down by van outside school AsiaOne Thursday, Nov 07, 2013 SINGAPORE - A River Valley High School teacher was hit by a goods van suspected of beating the red light near the school gate. Mrs Eileen Pua Jiu Er, 31, a chemistry teacher, suffered three fractures and was sent to hospital, Lianhe Wanbao reported. The accident happened on Tuesday, at a traffic crossing outside the school at about 12.15pm. Mrs Pua had been crossing a road along Boon Lay Avenue, just outside the school, when the accident occured. This morning, Mrs Pua spoke to reporters at the National University Hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU). She said she was on her way home and had just started crossing the road when she suddenly felt something hit her forcefully. When she regained consciousness, she found herself lying on a hospital bed. "I saw the pedestrian traffic light turn green before stepping off the curb," she said. "I am a teacher, and I need to set a good example when I'm outside the school, so I definitely wouldn't cross when the light is still red," she told Wanbao reporters. She suffered multiple fractures all over her body, broken ribs and is expected to take at least a month to recover. Closed-circuit television footage was not able to determine if Mrs Pua had dashed across the road when the light had not yet turned green or if the van driver had beaten the red light. ------ Remember that earlier video - where the taxi jammed brakes after running red lights, and managed to stop before hitting the car? This van was not so lucky... hope the punishment is severe. Gotta teach drivers to slow down at amber and stop at red light; not to save a couple of minutes by running the red lights; but risking harming people.

http://dai.ly/x151mnc Motorsports crash scenes are one of the most popular. While we are no sadists, these scenes usually add that bit of extra spice and drama to the sports. But of course, some are more spectacular than others. Let's start by saying even by rally crash standard, this is terrifying. All we can tell is that the driver locked up his brakes, failed to negotiate a turn, went straight into the barrier - and the rest is history. Fortunately, both the driver and co-driver are unhurt from the accident.

Romantic meals right at the edge of the Singapore River will soon become a thing of the past at Robertson Quay and Clarke Quay, when new rules on outdoor refreshment areas kick in this week. Under new guidelines from the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), diners' tables cannot be placed right by the riverside. The aim, it said, is to "free up the riverfront for public access". The new rules are effective immediately, but the URA said it would give operators "sufficient time" to clear the riverside tables. Outdoor tables on the side of the walkway away from the river can stay, and restaurants can also apply to develop second-storey extensions from buildings to create dining areas there. How come nearly 3000 'Chu Pa Chieh' decendants landed in Shanghai River ..... Some believe that those pigs got some kind of virus and died. The farmer then dump them into the river. hmmmmmm............ can forget eating roasted pork in Shanghai for the time being while holidaying there ...... From Yahoo : Thousands of dead pigs found in Shanghai river Nearly 3,000 dead pigs have been found floating in Shanghai's main waterway, the Chinese city's government said Monday as residents expressed fears over possible contamination of drinking water. Shanghai's water bureau said over the last two days workers had fished 2,813 pigs out of the Huangpu river, which cuts through the commercial hub and creates its waterfront Bund district. In the southwestern district of Songjiang Monday, workers used long-handled rakes to pull the bloated animal carcasses, which were turning from pink to grey, out of the water onto a small boat, an AFP photographer witnessed. The stench of rotting pork hung over the river as workers dumped the partially disintegrating bodies into the hold. The dead pigs included both piglets and adults weighing hundreds of pounds, the Shanghai city government said. link: http://sg.news.yahoo.com/plague-pigs-shang...-045722657.html

Chinese mistresses jump into the river for BMW ANN - Friday, January 7Send IM Story Print Beijing (China Daily/ANN) - Two 25-year-old women who shared the affections of the same man in Jinan, Shandong province, China, jumped into the Yellow River in the hope of snagging a BMW. The pair were both mistresses of a man surnamed Wang, who had separately promised to buy each of them a BMW car. When the two women ran into each other on Jan 3, they began to quarrel about the car. One of them said she would do anything for Wang and jumped into the Yellow River to show she meant it. Not to be outdone, the second one followed suit. A passer-by surnamed Mi saw the two women, one of whom had cut her leg on an icicle, and pulled them from the river before calling their lover. Wang, a construction supplier from the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, arrived at the scene with his wife, who denounced the two women and told her husband to return the BMW to her. An anonymous party reported the ensuing row to the police, who recorded the incident, and Wang paid Mi for rescuing the women from the river. This is so hilarious.
