  2. Come to think of it, I often hear people say conti car not suitable for SG climate. That's why got engine problem, breakdown,etc. And they will say better to get sushi/kimchi car instead.... But Japan has 4 seasons, and so does Korea.... just like those conti cars from Europe..... So there is no basis at all to this claim? Or must buy those Made-In-Thailand Toyotas then can tahan SG climate?

The advocates are arguing for a ban on trade of the popular dish and its consumption at official banquets and functions. They are also hoping to persuade Chinese restaurants here to remove the dish from their menus and corporate events. Two communities - Chong Pang and Canberra under Nee Soon GRC - have banned the dish from being served at official functions. Two weeks ago, the No Sharks Fins Singapore campaign was the first to launch here, organised by avid diver Michael Aw. After garnering enthusiastic support - 80,000 responses at an online petition earlier in January - organisers decided to take it a step further. They hope to persuade all Chinese restaurants here to remove this dish - considered a traditional Chinese delicacy - by next year and will be conducting outreach programmes at schools. Non-profit organisations like World Wildlife Fund campaign are lending their weight behind this campaign. Another group, Shark Savers, is due to embark on four campaigns over the next few months, with the end goal of persuading the authorities to impose a trade ban as well as a ban of the dish at official functions. Speaking to Today, Mr Jonn Lu, who is leading efforts of the international shark conservation group, said that, while no other country in this region has imposed a total trade ban, Singapore is well positioned to be the first. "To date, no country with a significant stake in this industry, be it a fishing, trading or a consumptive one, has done anything to protect sharks. Herein lies a golden opportunity for the Singapore Government to come across as a thought and policy leader," he said. Last year, Singapore imported about 3,500 tonnes of shark's fin, 40 per cent more than the previous year. Explaining that in the past the focus was on education, Mr Lu said now there is little time for these efforts to bear fruit - hence the call for a ban. According to Mr Lu, those from within the trading industry have estimated that sharks face extinction within a decade, while scientists give estimates of about 20 years. Worldwide estimates are that about 100 million sharks are killed for their fins each year, although scientists are not sure. Internationally, calls for bans from environmentalists have met with limited success. To date, only five states in the United States have passed Bills banning the sale, trade and possession of shark's fins. California - the biggest market for this trade outside Asia - became the latest to implement the ban starting in January this year. In China, negotiations are on-going for a trade and banqueting ban, said Mr Lu. According to reports, a legislation proposal for the latter was drawn up this year. When contacted about the possibility of a ban here, the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority said that "it will continue to monitor the conservation status of sharks and restrict trade in any species, which is endangered". A spokesman added that Singa-pore follows the lead of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, which decides every three years if an animal is threatened with extinction. In recent months, a string of local supermarkets, such as FairPrice and Carrefour, and hotels like Shangri-La pledged to stop serving or selling the dish. Shark Savers' efforts to spread its cause among the community here will focus on those aged between 10 to 45 years. The campaigns here will focus on social media, short '101' lessons held within the community to educate people on sharks, a Shark Aid concert, as well as print and television advertisements. As to chances of winning enough support to successfully call for a ban, Mr Lu is optimistic as people now are "more interested than they were 10 to 15 years ago". He warned that loss of sharks as apex predators could lead to a "cascading effect" on wild fish stocks and commercial fisheries. "We need to save them now for selfish reasons: Being apex predators, they are absolutely critical in the maintenance of balance and harmony within food pyramids and food webs," he added.
  5. Hi all. Currently on PS3 (225/45R17) and has tracked with them at PG 5 times and about 30 hard laps in total (not counting warm ups/downs). This is over a period of a year and in-between just normal driving for about 15k km since new. Camber is F3.0 and R2.7. The thread depth is still good but some parts are torn and generally very rough. In my recent track day, I can feel they are rather 'oily' just after 3 laps. Back on normal roads they are still as good. So now thinking whether to change them. Hope can get some recommendations on lasting tyres at least like PS3 but with better grip and cheaper. Is it safe to get those 2nd hand ones from Still Racing or AL Tyres? Thanks in advance for your comments.

  8. 60 accidents a day involving taxis Insurance premiums for taxis have also soared in last few years By Christopher Tan, Senior Correspondent TAXI drivers are either the most dangerous or hard-luck drivers on the road. They are behind the wheel of 3 per cent of Singapore's vehicle population but are involved in 14 per cent of the accidents. Things seem to be getting worse, with taxi companies seeing their premiums soar over the last few years, and one insurer which used to focus on cab insurance dropping out altogether. Between 2007 and last year, there were about 22,000 accidents each year involving taxis, or an average of 60 a day. It also works out to nearly one accident for every cab on the road. On average, there were 162,000 motor accidents a year over the same period, or one in every six vehicles. Taxi insurers were not available to comment, but a senior executive at leading motor insurer Chartis said: 'We do see a rising trend from accidents involving taxis.' According to the Land Transport Authority, taxis make up less than 3 per cent of the total vehicle population of 933,000. The accident situation is not unique to Singapore. A 2008 state study in Connecticut found that the taxi accident rate there was more than quadruple that of the passenger vehicle rate. Some note that taxi drivers have far greater odds of getting into collisions given the long hours they spend on the roads. And the situation may be worsening. ComfortDelGro, the largest player with around 15,500 cabs, has seen its insurance expenses rising by millions over the last few years. Last year, its taxi premiums totalled $71 million - $5 million more than in 2008, and more than double its 2004 bill of $32.4 million. In the meantime, its fleet size has hardly changed. The smaller players are seeing it too. Smart Taxis managing director Johnny Harjantho said the trend of rising premiums is 'worrying'. Owner-operators seem to be hit the hardest. One of them, 62-year-old Goh Seow Chai, has been a cabby for 40 years. 'Just three years ago, third-party coverage cost as little as $1,500,' he said. 'Now, it's around $4,000 - if you have been accident-free. If you had accidents, it can be as much as $10,000 to $13,000. 'I know drivers who had to borrow from relatives. They have no choice, they need to drive to make a living.' Third-party injury liability cover is mandatory for road users in Singapore. On average, motor premiums for other vehicles have risen by a less drastic 30 per cent since 2004. Some observers point to an explosion in the number of taxis as having created a situation of supply outstripping demand. Since the market was liberalised in 2003, the taxi population has soared by 30 per cent to around 25,000 now. Taxi ridership, on the other hand, has grown by a more modest 9 per cent. Until a recent fare increase bolstered their take-home pay, cabbies were clocking longer hours and literally racing one another for fares, observers said. 'Some drivers tend to be reckless, and stop or swerve suddenly to pick up fares,' said General Insurance Association (GIA) president Derek Teo. 'I have personally encountered this.' So have other motorists. In January, lawyer Ye Su Jin, 37, was driving on the Pan-Island Expressway to work one morning when a cab 'cut into my lane, almost hitting me'. Then he 'jammed (on the) brakes suddenly'; and Ms Ye's car rear-ended the cab. After the incident, she did some checks and found that the cabby had been involved in five accidents in the past two years. In April, her insurer received a letter from a law firm acting for the cabby claiming for more than $8,000 in damages, including medical expenses. The case is pending. Company director Guo Yanhuai, 46, recalled making a turn at a yellow box junction some time in 2006, when a taxi collided with his car at fairly high speed. Last year, the cabby sued, and Mr Guo's insurer paid out nearly $35,000. It paid another $11,000 for Mr Guo's damages. Mr Guo's car insurance premium has not soared, a sign that the insurer did not deem him to be more than 20 per cent at fault. Mr Teo of the GIA said cabbies could actually be competent drivers given their vast experience on the road. 'It all boils down to education to inculcate good driving habits and road safety, plus practising road courtesy and consideration for other road users,' he said. [email protected]

Toyota, the world's largest automaker, may go so far as to raise the prices of all vehicles at once and will make a final decision as early as next month, the paper said. "We'll make a final decision after evaluating April-June sales and production costs," a top Toyota official was quoted by the Nikkei. Price increases by the industry leader will likely prompt other major automakers to follow suit, the paper said. Just a few days earlier, Nissan Motor Co (7201.T: Quote, Profile, Research) Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn said Japan's No. 3 automaker would likely lift car prices in Japan to offset a surge in the price of raw materials such as steel.   13. 1. Really tak boleh tahan hawker centres and kopi tiam toilets cleaniness. Singapore has progressed so much and its public toilet hygience is still lagging behind despite all these years. 2. What do you guys think are the problems in maintaining clean and hygenic public toilets? I was of the thought that they should just outsource toilet management to specialists who can take better care of the toilets. One more thing, we should just dismantle all sitting toilet bowls and change back to good old squatting type since most Singaporean don't know how to use a sitting toilet bowl properly. Regards,
  14. I was at Bedok Central Blk 204 on 5 November 2007. I was in a car park and I alighted my husband and maid while searching for parking lot. After they alighted, I finally found one and reverse my car. While I was trying to align the vehicle into the lot and there came a FXXXing SMRT Taxi bearing the registration plate SXC 463?Z from a far distance stop in front of my vehicle stopped at my right side. He dan pointed some hand signal which I did not really see clearly. Therefore, I stopped my vehicle and this time I seen it with my own eyes that he is using his 3rd finger to point at me. I was damn furious and alighted my vehicle and goes straight to him. He then use vulgaries on me and greeted my mother. I was so mad that I screamed at him at the top of my voice and a heated argument continued. So many people are looking at us and no one came forward to help. (I am a lady driver). I immediately called the police and then my husband and maid came back. He asked why the taxi driver pointed the 3rd finger at me and of course he denied. When I said that he greeted my mother with his stupid language and he denied again. After that he admitted that he did use the language on my mother. My husband wanted to whack him but I stopped him as the police is already on the way. Eventually, the police arrived and advised me to make a report while the driver denied all the things that he used on me. After the driver left, the police told me to file a report against me on the magistrate and told me to inform the taxi company. To date, SMRT had not come back to me and I was very disappointed that it is just a minor parking issue and he had to raised his 3rd finger at me and use all kinds of languages on girls / women. What a shame!!!
  15. I just changed a new job and they provide us with a open space parking area, as I'm new, I suay suay kena those lot without shade. Everyday during lunch time I had to waste 10-15mins to wait for the heat to cool down. The seat and steering wheel is like on fire. I did not install any v-cool or sun cool for my car, not too sure about those stuff. But I need some advice now, like does v cool really works at all? I have been hearing about them alot before. I will mostly install it for whatever cost.. as my current lot is free, I need to pay $25 for parking fee at non-staff parking lot everyday. so its worth it.

  18. Yo brothers and sis, I took my ride up north and peaked 6000 - 7000 rpm at times. Me using castrol mineral oil from agent, oil already done 7,000 kms when I started the journey. My whole adventure in the north covered some 1200 kms. Will there be any adverse effect on the engine ? I intend to use the oil up to 10K before the next OCI. Thanks
  19. This is the last straw! The oil no doubt will give superior protection but my FC recently went down to 11.5km/L eversince the oil got in. Been decreasing since the oil change. I'm gonna drain it out. Good thing got the Conoco Hydroclear SAS 5W30.
