Xiaomi coming soon, no joke. Xiaomi to invest $10bn in electric vehicle race Chinese phone maker Xiaomi is wading into electric vehicles with a $10bn (£7.3bn) investment over ten years. The company will be entering a fiercely competitive electric car market that also includes rivals Apple and Huawei. Xiaomi will set up a wholly-owned subsidiary with an initial investment of about $1.5bn, with the company's chief executive Lei Jun heading up the new venture. "The decision was made after numerous rounds of deliberation among all our partners, and this will be the final major entrepreneurial project of my life," he said in a statement. So far, the company has given no indication about whether it will produce budget models or target the top end of the market. There are already hundreds of companies in China jostling for a share of the world's leading market for electric cars. Xiaomi founder Lei Jun says his company’s first electric car will be an SUV or a sedan, priced between US$15,000 to US$45,000 Xiaomi’s first vehicle will be either a sedan or an SUV costing between 100,000 yuan and 300,000 yuan (US$15,300 to US$45,900), said the Chinese smartphone giant’s co-founder and CEO Lei Jun on Tuesday, shedding light on the new Tesla challenger’s multibillion-dollar venture into electric vehicles (EV). Lei revealed the details during a live-streamed video session on Douyin, the Chinese sibling app of TikTok, to promote Xiaomi products, which came a week after he announced the company’s foray into smart cars. “The first car will definitely not be a sports car or a motorhome; it’d be either a sedan or an SUV,” Lei said, adding that the plans are still at an early stage and the details are still being worked out.

Some time last year, my phone totally died on me, forcing me to purchase a replacement - apart from the money, I wasn't really complaining, as I have been eyeing the Xiaomi 13 Pro for quite some time, clearly impressed by its camera's prowess. Everything about the phone was great. As the flagship model powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon Gen 2, there's no concern for processing power, and my only gripe was that I could only afford the 256GB variant... After spending some time with it, I found a serious problem with the phone - the curved edge of the display! I'm going to explain my hatred for this feature. Yes, some might think that it is a pretty design, but in reality, there are just too many cons to justify it. Pros: Larger screen to bezel ratio Allows the phone to look slimmer Cons: As the curved edge is still part of the display, the extreme edge of the content that you are viewing might fall into that curved area and get slightly distorted The curved edge is still part of the touch screen, and hence one-handed operation of the phone will easily result in accidental touches by the fleshy part of your palm (there's even a setting for you to adjust the unresponsive area near the edge of the screen - even the phone manufacturer knew it was going to be a problem!) Setting the area near the edge to be unresponsive can also result in issues - certain apps, games or programs might require touches near the edge to operate and this could break the experience. It's impossible to get the perfect tempered glass screen protector. As the curved edge require a curve tempered glass piece, seamlessly adhering it to the screen becomes an issue. Tempered glass manufacturers have came up with two solutions - a really thick adhesive layer, or a thin UV-cured liquid glue. With the former, touchscreen responsiveness is subpar and operating the in-display fingerprint sensor can be an issue, and with the latter, it doesn't take more than a couple of weeks for the edges of the adhesive to wear... In my opinion, this is a design feature that I can absolutely do without. Thankfully, it seems that the latest Xiaomi 14 Ultra no longer has this annoying and useless feature. - Zhi Xuan

Been using Samsung Fold 3 for close to 2 years. Love it so far as everything is very stable, but always worried about failure of folding hinge mechanism which was replaced once by Samsung Singapore recently out of warranty after some dispute. Another pain is the very narrow front display which make typing difficult and frustrating, especially when need to type fast. Understand the rationale for it - narrow form factor make secure handling + proper aspect ratio of inner display for viewing + front cover meant for simple tasks like checking messages and phone calls and to use inner display for life tasks. But really hard to convince myself so have been on the look out for suitable alternative. Pixel Fold - too ex and apps not optimised despite a Google phone especially power consumption Oppo Find N2 - inner display too small at only 7.1" Honor Magic V2 - hinge design is sub standard Been thinking to get Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 which was launched on 14 Aug this year which seems to have everything that I like and more, and finally bite the bullet while in Beijing recently. The motivation was the S$300 saving comparing to get locally from Shopee which need to do pre-order. No warranty anyway haha. The first thing to do had been to try to install all the normal Google apps like Play Store and Google Map and Chrome and Gmail etc etc. Was thinking would be challenging since this is China ROM. But ended up pretty easy. Just need to download apk for Play Store from APKPure, then everything just install through the Pay Store app. Really no sweat. To transfer phone contents, just download Mi Mover which works similarly like Smart Switch for Samsung. First impression really great. Much better camera with Leica colours and very versatile zoom lenses of upto 5x optical zoom. Excellent battery life even if using inner display all the way. The Samsung E6 displays used has similar consumption for both inner and cover display, something that defy normal understanding since the inner display is so much bigger. And the battery operating time is even better than Samsung Fold 5 even though both uses Samsung displays. GSMArena tested it to yield 115hrs while Fold 5 only can last 95hrs. But of course there are negative experiences though only few, Found a minor glitch in Whatsapp that at times will display phone numbers instead of names. Irritating, but solved after changing the permission to allow always reading the contacts. Be prepared for such minor issues as this is not a international ROM after all. And so far Android Auto still cannot work. Maybe Xiaomi never pay for licenses to use as it is meant for China market, but not a deal breaker lah. Worse case hang it on top of dashboard if need to use it to do navigation. If keen, there are tonnes of youtube videos on this device right now, with some from outside China. Go do research and decide for yourself. Samsung Fold 5 is good and a safe choice, but the narrow front cover is really not easy to live with for many people unless you can type very comfortably with it. I would have gladly stick to it if that is the case haha to be frank.

As the timelines seem to have been put back a month for 2018, it's likely that sales of the S9 and S9 Plus will begin in March this year, the same month the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge (also unveiled at MWC) launched in 2016. Koh said the release dates for the new handsets would be announced next month. The mobile boss also spoke about Samsung's foldable phone, confirming that the company plans to launch the device sometime next year. He added that the UX was proving the biggest obstacle in commercialization, but hoped that production would start in late 2018. Additionally, Koh said a new version of Samsung’s AI would be launched this year. Bixby 2.0 will be here sometime in the next twelve months and will be supported on all Samsung devices, which presumably includes the likes of TVs and laptops, by 2020.

Its first car is the SU7, a large electric sedan built under contract by BAIC. The lead designer was Li Tianyuan, who penned the polarizing BMW iX. The Chinese tech giant has now added another former BMW designer to its payroll, none other than Chris Bangle. Xiaomi chairman and co-founder Lei Jun took to X to make the surprising announcement about Bangle's new role at the company's car division. Christopher Edward Bangle was appointed chief of BMW design in 1992 after working for Opel and Fiat in the 1980s. During his stay in Bavaria until 2009, he penned a multitude of models, some of which had the infamous "Bangle Butt." The E65 7 Series is a prime example, as is the E63 6 Series Coupe.

Reached our shores not long ago and in Singapore, it supports 4G hardwire kit. Not many people have bought it though as I want to look at reviews from buyers from official channels such as Shopee, Lazada, etc. Unique features which are different from others are 360 degree rotating view, voice commands for selfie/vlogs and advance ADAS (including pedestrains and motorcycle detections wor). I'm not promoting this but in fact looking at it to replace my "free" Korean brand cheapo dashcam provided by the PI. But the cons for this Omni is no rear camera support. I think rear camera is needed as I have been rear-ended twice and both were not my fault. Claims from 3rd party was done very smoothly. 70mai Singapore mentioned can look at installing the 70mai 1S on the rear. I have a small battery pack that is hooked up on my current dashcam for 24/7 monitoring but to runs out of juice sometimes if I have parked at a location with many cars driving past capturing lots of events. My intention for 24/7 monitoring is for situation where car is being hit-and-run especially in car parks and there are many idiots out there nowadays (no pun intended). My possible options are: 1. Buy a Omni for the front (and hook it up to my battery pack) and install a 1S for the rear to record during drive only (for rear-ended case, choy choy choy); or 2. Option 1 and install another battery pack for the rear camera. Not sure if both packs can be charged sufficiently as sometimes my drive could not charge up even my current one to full 100%; or 3. Stick to current dashcam or get the 70mai A800s with dual channel but lose the features of Omni. 😛 Advices and ideas are welcome. 70mai users or potential buyers can discuss and provide reviews here also. 🙂 Cheers!

Recently just got a second phone for work. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 5G. Got it from Circles @ $329 w/o plan, and because there is a 3rd year anniversary bonus from Circles, it's another $100 off the phone. So essentially I only paid $229 with free Xiaomi Wireless Earbuds. If you're out in the market for a budget phone, I think this is decent. Built quality good, design good, interface good. For the budget price I paid, pretty impressive. Total damage: Phone $229, Tempered glass $10, MyRepublic Lite $10/month.

Yesterday Xiaomi’s Hong Kong and Taiwan Facebook pages posted messages featuring the company’s rabbit mascot beside a Chinese dragon proclaiming “Hello Singapore”, linking to a Xiaomi Singapore Facebook page. However, now that Hugo Barra posted the same picture on his Google+ profile page, the proverbial writing is on the proverbial wall. Curiously, the Singapore Facebook page appears to have been created in May 2013 – three months before Barra got on board. This might indicate that Xiaomi had been eyeing the move for some time. Xiaomi had publicly indicated that its next overseas stop beyond Taiwan and Hong Kong would be Singapore back in December when it held a fan meetup in Taipei. The move to the city-state will test the company’s chops in a market in which consumers have higher incomes on average. It also will be branching out from exclusively Chinese-speaking markets into a multi-lingual market. Just this morning Xiaomi announced that it had sold over 18 million handsets in 2013, more than twice the 7.19 million it doled out the previous year. In 2014, it’s hoping to hit 40 million.
