When I was teenager cycle on road,

I always cycle on the dbl yellow line.

 

Dunno why cyclist now cannot handle the bike closer to the kerb.

Yes those days the bikes like mountain bikes or so called old China Phoenix bikes or Raleigh the control is good as the tyres are thick and not meant for high speeds (imagine a newspaper man or postman lugging over 20kgs of weight )whilst those so called leotards on road bikes with ultra thin tyres with minimal grip or friction are not so easy to control with full Adrenalin rush Speed as weekend warriors

Not they cannot, is they dowan. Fellow forumer says its safer to ride in the middle of the lane + TP told him its A-ok.

 

Wife's friend told her the "right" way is 2 cyclists ride abreaat and take the whole lane....

same, i remember i cycle around sg with my friends,

with a $20  mountain bike that cannot switch gear.

 

even at midnight time, we go single file on the yellow line.

now those ppl wear leapord like pro , buy a bike that cost a few k, 

 

but their cycling skills like getting worst

the problem with those problematic cyclists is not because they have no skills but they have no brains.  I am not referring to all , there are good cyclists around , but really i see many have no brains or their brains are  between  the saddles.

Once upon a time, AMDK were real expats w car allowance, expense accounts, etc. So when it came to mid-life crisis, the real expat AMDK could buy Harley Davidsons n ride as a pack to re-live the days b4 their beer bellies

 

Now many AMDK are on local terms. Some even paid less than locals. So after the financial crisis, these fake expats had to scale down their mid life crisis Harleys to bicycles instead n ride as a pack to re-live the days b4 their beer bellies

 

And so the leotard was born and they lived happily ever after...LOL

Please go back to where you come from and cycle for all you want.

Recently I had a few near misses. OK. Not really near miss but it has become my pet peeves.

 

1) cyclists don't wait at side of road when waiting to cycle across zebra crossing. Instead they wait about 10 metres back in the shade and when they want to, they just charge forward. This happens during hot sunny days and I think they are waiting for a traffic light to be in their favor so they can sprint across the zebra crossing and directly cross the road.

 

It is dangerous because you don't know when they are going to sprint forward and one might miss them because they are not waiting by the road side but far back.

 

2) cyclists seem to take pride in sprinting to the road edge as if to cross the road and then braking just and the edge of the pavement.

 

It becomes hard to anticipate especially if they time the reaching of edge of placement to the time you and time you are about to pass. Fortunately this is not common.

 

This happens usually at traffic junctions where they look like they want to beat the traffic light (green Man just stopped flashing) and then look suddenly stop (but some do shoot across and it's hard to tell who would shoot across and who would "chicken out").

The reason why cyclist stay away from kerb is because of the uncertain quality of the kerb and the drainhole covers. Take a ride now u get what i mean.

 

It is not how wide or thin the tires are.. But when we cycle at higher speed abv 30km/h we do need ample clearance from the kerb to allow more space n time to react.. Do u see Perodua Kelisa or Ferrari 458 etc driving near kerbs or center divider at speed? I bet u won't.. at low speed is different thing..

 

Of cos speed is relative.. in a car at 40km/h is slow.. bicycle u try to hit this speed and i will say many can't hit nor sustain it.

 

Roadie cannot be in PCN as the avg speed for a normal ride is easily 28km/h. PCN jus too crowded and we do care not to bump into others. So we take the road.. if u ask me do i enjoy it? answer is NO! 

 

2 weeks ago i saw 2 accidents.. one lorry crashed into center divider at Yishun near the stadium.. the other happen just infront of me.. lorry driver guess dose off and crashed into center divider.

 

every time i ride.. i just hope i can be home..

Cycled twice to yishun from eunos recently and no issue cycling on pavement leh. It was quite ok.

 

Once on a foldie and once on a mountain bike with road tyres.

 

Didn’t wear helmet since only cycling on the roads need helmet.

Supok you sir, same same here. I used to cycle on pavement all the way then into mandai or bt timah trails, no issues too. Just be considerate to take care of pedestrians . Since I am on a mountain bike , I can go off pavement to avoid pedestrians from time to time, not an issues.

thats why sg road is not mean for u to cycle as a form entertainment ,

but rather as a form as transport.

 

the rules for vehicles to share road with cyclist since the old days

is alot of ppl need that form/mean of transport,

to travel to work etc etc.

 

i am sure most driver is good and kind enough to give way to these ppl.

and these cyclist more often then not respect rules and regulation and give ways to cars .

 

but now cyclist that cycle on our (jam enough) road as a 'FORM OF ENTERTAINMENT' is breaking and damaging that balance.

Yes I do, have to be careful of them.

 

I used to have MTB tyres on my mountain bike too but I changed to road tyres and true enough like my friends told me, it’s smoother and less strenuous.

 

Since I don’t go trails like you, suits me more I guess.
