  1. GM to move international headquarters to Singapore from China Reuters Wednesday, Nov 13, 2013 General Motors Co (GM.N) said on Wednesday it would move its international operations headquarters to Singapore from Shanghai in the second quarter of 2014. The automaker said it would have about 120 employees in Singapore, who would oversee "key parts" of the company's business in the Asia-Pacific region, Africa, the Middle East and Chevrolet and Cadillac Europe. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Does it mean that we will start to have more Chevrolets on the roads?
  2. As time goes by, China seems to be getting more lucrative when it comes to the automotive market. There are many global automakers out there that have seen huge sales of their car lineups in the country. The German automaker BMW, for example, managed to sell no less than 330,000 units of cars in China last year. In comparison, its rival automaker, Audi, sold at least 400,000 units within the same time period. So, it seems rational for another automaker to come and join the business. In this case, it's the US automaker Cadillac, which is a division that belongs to General Motors (GM). GM has now made clear its intention of building a plant in China after acquiring the signature from the National Development and Reform Commission in the country. The signature means approval for GM to build its plant which is estimated to cost $1.3 billion (S$1.6 billion) in total. The plan is that GM will start establishing the plant in June 2013. In terms of production capacity, the plant is expected to deliver 150,000 units per year. The plant is to be situated at the Jinqiao zone in Shanghai. This factory building approval seems critical for Cadillac as the company has already avoided being forced to pay 25 percent of import tariffs. This is possible thanks to Cadillac's decision to switch its XTS sedan production to China. Bob Socia, President GM China, even happened to comment that it was an imaginable probability that the Cadillacs manufactured in China could be sold in the United States of America. Well, it seems that globalisation has entered a whole brand new era. It's brave and yet, it's also strange at the same time.
  3. As a result of the rising tension in the Korean Peninsula, GM is making contingency plans to move workers and shift production out of the country. Speaking in an interview on CNBC's Squawk Box, GM CEO Dan Akerson said, "We are making contingency plans for the safety of our employees to the extent that we can." GM is the third largest carmaker in South Korea employing 17,000 people with an annual output of 1.4 million vehicles. About 1.3 million units are exported to Europe and the U.S. One of these models exported is the Chevrolet Spark subcompact (above). Akerson added that it is difficult to shift production out of South Korea but may have to do so if the region continues to destabilise as part of long term planning. However, according to a report on Wall Street Journal, Akerson has already decided to move production to other plants. Should a war take place, Hyundai Motor Group, the world's fourth largest auto maker after General Motors, Volkswagen Group, and Toyota, is definitely going to be affected as well. This could result in wide ranging impact on the global automotive industry. At the time of writing this article, North Korea has moved a second mid range missile to its east coast and loaded both on mobile launchers, fueling fears of an imminent firing. Let there be peace on Earth.
  4. An ex-General Motors (GM) engineer, Du Shanshan and her husband, Yu Qin, were convicted of stealing trade secrets on hybrid car technology from their former company to help develop such vehicles in China. The 53-year old Du was found guilty of conspiracy to possess trade secrets without authorization and two counts of trade secrets. However, she was acquitted on wire fraud charges. The U.S claimed that Du copied GM's trade secrets and provided the documents to Yu. Prosecutors accused Yu of using the data to seek business ventures or employment with GM's competitors, including the Chinese automaker Chery Automobile. Yu was found guilty on all six counts and a seventh count, which is obstruction of justice. "These defendants stole trade secrets, which General Motors spent many years and millions of dollars to develop, to give an unfair advantage to a foreign competitor," US Attorney Barbara McQuade said after the verdict. "We hope that this prosecution will send a message that stealing proprietary information from an employer or competitor is a serious crime," McQuade added. The couple's attorneys said that the documents in question were not trade secrets, while GM declined to comment on the issue. The defendants face a maximum sentence of 10 years on each of the trade secrets counts. Yu could face a stiffer sentence on wire fraud and obstruction convictions. The trade secret counts, wire fraud and obstruction of justice carry a fine of US$250,000 each.
  5. Many would know that the type of tyres used on a car plays a significant role in fuel economy. And in an effort to create more efficient tyres, General Motors has partnered with engineers and scientists at the National Tyre Research Centre. This partnership will accelerate the development of new tyre technologies which will improve vehicle fuel economy. The facility which is located in Halfiax County, Virginia, USA; uses state of the art machinery to allow engineers and researchers to replicate real life events and also improve vehicle highway safety. With certain estimations, tyre design can improve fuel efficiency by seven percent. A tyre
  6. Although GM and Ford are rivals in the automotive industry, these American car makers are collaborating to develop 9 to 10-speed automatic transmissions. This is not the first of their partnership though. In 2002, they cooperated to create a new automatic transaxle, designed for transverse engine applications in cars and light trucks. According to reports, GM will be in charge of designing a 9-speed gearbox for front-wheel drive cars while Ford will take the lead in developing a 10-speed transmission for rear-wheel drive cars such as SUVs, performance vehicles and pick-ups. Cars with a larger number of gear selections enable the engine to operate more efficiently, thus reducing CO2 emissions and fuel consumption. GM and Ford are not alone in the quest for additional gear ratios. Hyundai is already working on a 10-speed automatic transmission that will be used on a range of Hyundai and Kia vehicles in the future, particularly luxury models. It is scheduled to hit the showroom in 2014. If the collaboration proves to be a success, GM and Ford, the world's second and fifth largest car maker respectively, will be able to enjoy great economy of scale due to the sheer volume of their annual output. According to IHS Automotive powertrain analyst, David Petrovski, GM and Ford benefit from reduced investment risk by working together. By developing their own gearbox instead of purchasing them from manufacturers such as ZF and paying license fees, a car maker can reduce their cost of production.
  7. [extract] Envia Systems, a small battery company with investment from General Motors (GM), is working on new technology that could allow an electric car to travel up to 322km on a single charge within the next 2 to 4 years. That is about the distance between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Speaking at an employee meeting, GM

  9. As automakers try to achieve better fuel efficiency, they are looking for ways to reduce overall vehicle weight. General Motors has taken what could be a game changing decision by investing in NanoSteel, a leader in nano-structured steel materials design. The new steel alloy technology offers unique material characteristics that are not currently available today that will reduce vehicle weight and increase fuel economy. David Paratore, President and CEO of NanoSteel, said that the new material is stronger yet easier to form than conventional automotive steel. Additionally, the new alloy can be formed using conventional steel processes and no new welding techniques or machines are needed. More importantly, NanoSteel claims huge weight-saving advantages. "We're not talking about saving grams. We're talking about saving kilograms," said Paratore. GM Ventures LLC, a subsidiary of General Motors, is hoping that the investment in the nano-structured steel material designs will have a widespread impact on the auto industry.
  10. [extract] Sometimes the dead is unable to rest in peace. In this case, Saab, and its owner, Dutch company Spyker has decided to sue General Motors for the sum of US$3 billion. Spyker/Saab wants compensation for the actions of General Motors (GM) blocking the use of GM technology in Saab cars. GM was basically worried that Saab/Spyker
  11. [extract] German automaker, Opel, announced recently that its CEO, Karl-Friedrich Stracke, had stepped down from the position which he had held from April 2011. He has also resigned as the chairman of General Motors Europe, the company announced in a statement. The 56-year-old Stracke was only in this position for slightly more than a year. He will stay with GM and take on special projects, reporting to GM
  12. General Motors (GM) has decided to pull its advertising campaigns from Facebook, citing that their paid advertisement had little effect on customers. The move comes just days ahead of Facebook's initial public offering. GM spokesman, Pat Morrissey, commented that the automaker is reassessing its Facebook advertising and clarified that the review is part of a regular analysis the company conducts on spending its advertising funds effectively. "We look at this with all media outlets, we look at the effectiveness," he said. "We move money around to various outlets." GM's announcement adds fuel to critics who say that Facebook, and other tech sites, may be overvalued. More than 50 percent of Facebook users say they never click on Facebook's sponsored advertisement, according to a recent Associated Press-CNBC poll. In addition, only 12 percent of respondents say they feel comfortable making purchases over Facebook, questioning the effectively of monetizing the social network platform. Facebook
  13. Toyota's three-year stretch as the world's largest automaker ended in 2011, when the company endured production setbacks in the aftermath of the devastating Japan earthquake and tsunami. However, Toyota is back with a vengeance and posted a 15.8% increase in sales in the US during the first quarter of 2012. On top of that, the Japanese automaker is on top of the global sales chart again based on Q1 2012 results. Toyota moved 2.49 million vehicles globally in the first three months, edging GM's 2.28 million sales and Volkswagen's 2.16 million, Bloomberg News reported. In 2011, GM was the best selling brand globally. GM sold 9.03 million vehicles while Volkswagen and Toyota moved 8.16 million and 7.9 million respectively. However, GM seemed relax about the fact that it is beginning to lose its sales crown for 2012. GM spokesman, Jim Cain, commented that one quarter is an awfully short window of time when GM has a big vision for global growth. "GM today is a profitable, growing company, and our plan is to grow more and earn more," said Cain in an e-mail. "We've got the ingredients to do both over time, especially with our aggressive new product launch calendar and the momentum Chevrolet, in particular, is building around the world," he added. Indeed, the first quarter is like the 10km mark in a marathon race. There is still a long journey ahead for GM and Toyota. It is still too early for Toyota to rejoice.

  16. [extract] The Daewoo badge will soon be history on cars in South Korea. General Motors Co. is killing the long-used GM Daewoo name in South Korea and will be putting the Chevy bowtie on its cars there by end of March. The name, GM Daewoo Auto & Technology Co., has been in use since GM took over the struggling South Korean automaker in 2002. The new name will be GM Korea Co. The company said in a statement: GM plans to make the changeover with the first-quarter launch of the Camaro, the automaker's first Chevrolet-badged entry in the South Korean market. The sports car is one of eight new or refreshed Chevrolet models scheduled for launch in South Korea this year. Other nameplates include the Spark and Aveo small cars, Cruze compact, Orlando small minivan and Capitva SUV.
  17. At the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, General Motors announced that it will begin selling the safety, security and connectivity service for non-GM and older GM vehicles already on the road. The service will be available through an aftermarket rear view mirror replacement featuring the OnStar button as well as other controls, which is said to be compatible with most top-selling vehicles from major manufacturers. According to the company, the OnStar retail product will offer the same key features found on GM's vehicles including Automatic Crash Response, Turn-by-Turn Navigation, Stolen Vehicle Location Assistance, one-button access to emergency and roadside services. Hands-free calling and Bluetooth connectivity are also part of the functions. The mirror will be available in the United States initially through Best Buy (http://www.bestbuy.com/) this spring, with more retailers to follow soon. Pricing for the mirror is set at US$299, excluding installation which is expected to cost between US$75 and US$100. The OnStar subscription fee starts from US$18.95 a month or US$199 for a full year.
  18. It's been three years since GM pulled the plug on Cadillac's racing aspirations but the luxury carmaker is set for a comeback as it announced that Cadillac will return to racing in 2011 with the CTS-V Coupe. The CTS-V Coupe will compete in the Sports Car Club of America World Challenge [sCCA]. The move also marks Cadillac's return to a series where it competed from 2004 to 2007, taking the Manufacturer
  19. GM has confirmed plans to build an all new small luxury car named the Cadillac ATS to compete with the likes of BMW 3 series and Mercedes Benz C Class. In order to do so, GM will invest $190 million in their Lansing Grand River assembly plant for the production of the new entry-level Cadillac. While the company is staying mum on details, CEO Dan Akerson said "America's fastest-growing luxury brand this year is about to get even more competitive with the addition of an all-new small luxury car." He added, "This investment demonstrates GM's commitment to Cadillac and to a strong U.S. manufacturing base." The car is expected to be launched in late 2012 or early 2013, and will slot below the CTS. Set to ride on the rear-wheel drive Alpha platform, which will also underpin the next-generation CTS and Chevrolet Camaro, the ATS will reportedly be offered as a sedan, coupe, convertible, and wagon. Additionally, the company has previously stated the car will feature high-tech engines and optional all-wheel drive.

    GM defend the Volt

General Motors is in a dispute with critics regarding its upcoming Chevy Volt, which the automaker touts as an all-electric car but critics call it a plug-in hybrid. Critics from publications such as Edmunds.com, Popular Mechanics, and Motor Trend magazine contend that the onboard gasoline engine kicks in on the Volt during a hard acceleration, and that makes it a hybrid. GM calls the Volt an "extended range electric vehicle." The Volt features a gasoline engine which acts as a generator for the batteries that power the electric motor. GM adds that it is the electric motor that drives the wheels and not the gasoline engine, which is there to charge the batteries as the car is driving and extend its driving range. But the engine can also drive a secondary generator which provides power directly to the motor. The Toyota Prius has a similar powertrain setup, and is labelled a hybrid. Its gasoline engine fuels a direct-drive generator that powers the electric motor which drives the wheels. The Detroit automaker had previously gotten in trouble with critics when it rated the Volt's mileage at 230 miles per gallon . The Environment Protection Agency, the arm of the United States federal government which rates vehicle mileage, refused to accept the rating. Mileage figures on electric cars can vary on a wide range as it depends a lot on driving habits. Driven aggressively, the batteries on an electric car can be run down rapidly. Edmunds.com has been particularly harsh against GM and accused GM of lying. One of its stories has this title: "GM Lied: Chevy Volt is not a true EV." The Chevrolet Volt goes on sale in the United States next month. A Singapore launch date has not been confirmed yet.
  21. When I first lay my eyes on the photograph above, it reminds me of the human-controlled robots in the movie Avatar, except that these have no arms. Coming back to the topic, General Motors and its Chinese partner Shanghai Auto (SAIC) presented a new trio of self-balancing two-wheeler concept vehicles that will be showcased in public for the first time at the SAIC-GM Pavilion at World Expo 2010 Shanghai that runs from May 1 through October 31. Called the Electric Networked-Vehicle (EN-V), the two-seater concept is tailored to the crowded mega-cities of the future. GM developed three different variants of the EN-V named Jiao (Pride), Miao (Magic) and Xiao (Laugh). The Xiao (blue color) was designed by GM Holden's design team in Australia, while the look of Jiao (red finish) was penned by designers at GM Europe and Miao (gray color) was designed at the GM Advanced Design Studio in California. Constructed using lightweight material, the EN-V weighs less than 500kg. All three versions of the EN-V are propelled by electric motors in each of their two driving-mode wheels. Power for the motors is provided by lithium-ion batteries that can be recharged from a conventional wall outlet and allow the EN-V to travel at least 40 kilometers or 25 miles on a single charge. I feel that a good testing ground for the EN-V would be environmental companies that does road cleaning. A suction pump could be attached to the bottom of the vehicle to clear up road debris and fallen leaves.
  22. Now, this is not a screenshot taken from a science fiction movie. This is reality in the making. General Motors is hard at work developing its next-generation heads-up technology, and we are given a preview of what sort of new features to expect in the coming years. This new concept, developed in partnership with Carnegie Mellon and the University of Southern California, uses an augmented reality system to display head-up information across the entire windshield. When you're watching a football game and images appear on the screen to indicate lines on the playing field, that's augmented reality. GM feels that this technology will be a good way to expand upon current heads-up systems without being too distracting for drivers. GM's new concept uses an array of vehicle sensors and cameras to collect data and project images directly onto the surface of the windshield. For example, if you're driving in dark foggy conditions, this technology can highlight the lines of the road. By pairing these functions with existing night vision technology, the heads-up system can identify and highlight animals or people along the side of the road, improving safety for the driver and other road users. At the current stage of development, GM still need to figure out how to piggyback on sensors and cameras already used in automotive applications, as well as how to keep production cost low. GM indicates that if things go well, we could see a complete version of this system as early as 2016.
