  1. Good news or bad news? Your views? Cyclists and users of personal mobility devices (PMDs) such as e-scooters will soon have to adhere to a lower speed limit when travelling on footpaths, after the Government accepted an advisory panel’s recommendations. Starting early 2019, the current 15kmh speed limit on footpaths for PMDs and bicycles will be brought down to 10kmh. The lower speed will give PMD users, cyclists and pedestrians enough time to react to each other in unforeseen circumstances, the Ministry of Transport (MOT) said on Tuesday (Sep 4). “All riders must continue to give way to pedestrians and slow down when approaching crowded areas or blind spots. Riders should also exercise caution when overtaking other path users,” the ministry said in a press release. https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/e-scooters-bicycles-speed-limit-footpaths-cut-to-10kmh-pmds-10682204

  3. Hi guys, would just like an opinion on how do you guys insure yourself. Pre-existing insurance that i have ========================= Life insurance + Critical Illness $200k Aviva-SAF term accidental death $100k NTUC Enhanced Incomeshield (ie medishield hospitalisation plan) DPS for CPF I'm getting married this year. Parents both retired. 30 yrs old. My Annual income will be above 100k/yr. In view of the increased responsibilities of ensuring my wife and my parents are cared for if something happpens to me So i'm thinking of increasing my Aviva-SAF insurance beyond the $100k and getting the Critical Illness rider for the SAF one as well (maximum is 300k at $360/yr) Aviva SAF insurance Aviva-SAF is term insurance, agents won't earn any commission and hence their advice will likely be garbage as well. Is there a recommended level of insurance based on your annual income? How do you guys do it?

Hi all, I'm trying to seek some light on one issue my friend is having. Appreciate any helpful inputs.
  7. Yesterday straits times invest section, interviewed a guy who didnt fully own his everyday car or his hdb flat. Does he need to be at least slightly more succesful financially before being feature ? Its quite silly to think that he thinks that by not stretching his HDB home loan.. To me, either you pay all beause it totally not necessary to pay interest to banks if you have cash.. Or you stretch to the max, if you believe that you have better use of your $$.
  8. 12. CNA news : iPads for police patrolling, higher pay for Home Team officers By Valerie Chang | Posted: 22 May 2012 2132 hrs SINGAPORE: Second Minister for Home Affairs and Minister in Prime Minister's Office S Iswaran revealed that technology will be a huge feature in the training of the Home Team. The Advanced Command Training System (ACTS) and Workpad are part of the technology to be leveraged. ACTS exposes officers to diverse training scenarios through a computer-generated virtual environment so as to better-equip them with strategic and operational decision-making skills in times of emergencies. This system will be launched next month. A prototype Workpad will be deployed at two Neighbourhood Police Centres (NPCs) namely Tampines and Bukit Merah East NPCs. Starting June, the customised iPad will be given as part of the patrol kit to the Community Policing Unit officers. It allows them to log information on-the-go. Mr Iswaran said that it is vital for the Home Team to be technologically savvy. "This is important for us stay ahead of the game, as technological advancements continue to change the complexion of crimes and security. As our adversaries exploit technology to commit crimes, we too must harness technology to stay ahead of them, and to enable our officers to work smarter." In July, officers can also look forward to enhanced salary packages and retirement benefits. Uniformed Junior Officers in the Home Affairs Uniformed Services (HUS) and Immigration and Checkpoints Authority of Singapore (ICA) can see a rise of 10 to 15 per cent in their monthly salary. While uniformed Senior Officers in these departments, at the ranks of Inspector to Superintendent, will receive a five per cent increase in their monthly salary. In addition, the retirement benefits of HUS Senior Officers on the INVEST Plan will be enhanced. A new retention incentive for ICA Senior Officers is being looked into. The details will be announced to officers soon. Mr Iswaran was speaking at the Home Team Promotion Ceremony on Tuesday. This year, a total of 4,474 officers received their promotion certificates in recognition of their stellar job performances. This includes 1,089 officers promoted within the Senior Officer ranks, and 3,291 officers promoted within the Junior Officer ranks. - CNA/ck What if a case reported on the scene, the officer login into the iPad and found that it is not within their boundaries to take the case and ask you to wait for the next officer from another division.... or the case classify into simple theft, serious theft, theft with weapon, theft in dwelling ...etc. and the officer after scaning his iPad, and say, not beyond his ability to handle, please wait here for the IO... They sure work smart.

  17. Need some expert analysis on this matter. Was at the CATs carnival and intend to get a Honda car. Pretty good price on Honda Jazz 1.5A $77k. The SE says ONLY if I take a loan of 7 years, then the car will comes with 3+2=5 years of warranty and 3 FREE servicing. The bank loan interest is 1.99%. But if I were to take only 4 years loan, then it will only be 3years factory warranty and NONE free servicing(have to pay myself for the first 1000km and subsequent ones) The question I want some answers is Assuming a 50k loan of 7 years vs 4 years....what is the advantage of gaining the 2 extra years of warrranty and 3 free servicing? What is the differences should I take 7 years loan and then do a full redemption at the 2nd year or take a 4 years and full redemption at 2nd year? 7 years loan for $50k Total owe amount = $50k + 7*1.99*50k =$56,965 Monthly = $56965/84 = $678.15 monthly After 24 months of payment bank loan remaining will be = $56965 - 678.15*24 = $40689.3 4 years loan for $50k Total owe amount = $50k + 4*1.99*50k = $53,980 Monthly = $53980/48 = $1124.58 monthly After 24 months or payment bank loan reamining will be = $53,980 - $1124.58*24 = $26,990 Now the mian question is how much the bank will want for the full settlement for the two cases? Will it be the exact figure remaining or is there a rule78 discount? I dont understand the rule78(if the bank still practice it), and I want to learn it before I go book the car this week! Will taking the 7 years loan be more worth it to cover the first three servicing costs? (lets not discuss in the extra two years of warranty, as I am not concerned about it, as I intend to sell the car after 3-4 years) Assuming 1000km is $200, and 5000km is $200 and 10000km is $300. Total is ~$700. Will taking the longer loan cover the servicing cost vs taking a short loan? Thanks for any guidelines or advice.
  18. read fron SHC site tat Autosecure givess gd insurance premium. But i asked ard n no one or agency heard of it. Anyone can advice.....
  19. I am really pissed with the SG insurance companies. Every year rates increase and I really have no idea how they arrive at the premiums. I suspect that insurance companies lure motorist into their trap....especially for new car owners. (new meaning either brand new or bought a new used car) When you buy a new car, the premium is usually very manageable, however, when it comes to renewal...that is where you get whack upside down. Cos the insurance company knows that you are trapped. (I believe only a small percentage would buy their cars outright and most would take loan...it depends on the tenure of the loan period) You would have to buy insurance cos its a necessity in order for you to drive on the road. So whatever price they quote, you can either swallow it or try your luck somewhere else (which is usually hopeless) Take me for example.... When I bought my car, the premium was only 1.7k (for a WRX is quite ok...cos I standby to be around 2K). Then when it comes to renewal with 50% NCB....it jump to 2.4K.....now tis year....its 3.5K !! A friend who drives a 1.3A Fit....1.8K last year with 20% NCB...this year with 30% NCB....2.6K !! Civic Type R, a owner was complaining that his premium shot up 300% !! (no claims history)....when he bought the car...the premium was 1.2K thereabout...now its 3K+ and not a lot of company wish to take. Honda Stream, When the owner bought it....600 bucks was his premium (50%) and now this year....with no claim history....he is paying 1.2K (which is like 100% increase) Is it possible that we group up and sign a petition to our dear government and ask them to do something about it. This cannot be right...a essential product for the motorist and it keeps going up everytime the insurance company says they are making a lost...WTF !! Another grouse....insurance company can never tell you how they derive at the premium...you ask them they tell you they have their method but its trade secret. PUI.... Anyone got a good suggestion on how to curb this tsunami ?
  20. Hi all, I am about to put my deposit for a used car and realise that out of the 4 tires, 3 of them are sumitomo brands and 1 is bridgestone. They are all 185/65/R15. 1. Is there any (safety, uneven wear & tear etc) implications when the tires are of different brands? Personally i have never heard of "Sumitomo", is it reliable? 2. Could the different brands of tires indicate that the car possibly have gone through an accident before and so ended up in such different combination of tire brands? Looks weird to me. (The original tire brand from TC is Toyo if i am not wrong). 3. Is it better to trade in the tires for new ones? I heard trading in prices are usually very low. Any indicative price for this? Thanks!
  21. 4-5 months ago, I went to my usual aircon mechanic to change a cap for the refrigerant gas container (I using R 12 for my COE car). (He told me there was a leak in the cap 6 months earlier when I went to him to top up the gas.) After changing the cap, he topped up the gas and the aircon was still not cold, so he told up the oil for the air-compressor. Subsequently the aircon was ok, but not as cold as before. Feeling my old car aircon should be ok, I drove with ease and comfort was a few months. But the aircon started to be 'not ok' a few weeks ago. I went to my mechanic last friday. He poured some water on the compressor and said the compressor spoilt. It was hot and water was boiling on it. He said that it is not supposed to be hot when the aircon is running. He said when the compressor is hot, the gas cannot go in as there is a auto mechanism to shut off the aircon. But when going at high rpm on expressway, the aircon can work a bit, but still wont be cold. He said need to changed the whole compressor which will cost more than $200. I think excluding labour. So now, I am wondering if my mechanic telling me the truth. But he did show me the refrigerant gas level via his guage. It showed 70%. He said when the aircon is working, the level should be 30-40%. Any truth in his words? I am really not a expert in aircon business.
  22. Hello everyone, i got a nagging question.. recently, i come across a post in a forum that mention that using API specification SJ grade is suitable for modern cars? Is it true, from what i have obtained from the web, its mentioned that SJ grade though still existent is getting obsolete.. The most recent addition and current grade is SM grade, if not one can also fall back on SL grade... SM grade oil are considered more stringent and thus of better quality than that of SL, and likewise SJ... mmz... i was wondering for the range of budget cars like vios, altis, sunny, lancer, jazz and etc... is SJ grade suitable? i think its not, at least the manual states a minimum of SL grading, if possible get SM grade... oil gurus, can help me on this? Trex101? Genie47? or simply anyone in the forum who would be more knowledgable in this area... thanks!
  23. Hello All, Those driving Kia or Lancer, just wondering if I send my car for servicing at other centres other then C&C, do I void my warrenty ? Any of u ever tried bringing their own engine oil to C&C for servicing before ? If u have, which servicing center issit and any contacts ? Just that their labor fees and engine oil is simply too expensive ... Thanks.
  24. In case some of you are wondering, I am talking about car battery size. Today my battery (maintenance free) decide to suddenly die ... no warning one Changed battery today ... the maintenance free type again .... german brand "HOS...." from C.A.S. The new one is smaller in size than the older one ...... it does not have any indication of the capacity of the battery like the older one (that says 62AH) ... the service engineer there says it's ok no problem. Wonder if smaller size equals to smaller AH capacity also ? Does it make a different in this case if the AH is smaller ? I do not use too much stuff like ICE when engine is off ... only cabin light, alarm and to start the car of course. Does it really matter since the alternator will take over once you start the car ? By the way, what is the normal life span of the maintenance free battery ? 2, 3 or 4 years in Singapore climate ?
