  4. CNA report : Train fault causes service delay between Jurong East & Joo Koon stations Posted: 10 May 2012 1227 hrs SINGAPORE: Train service on the East-West Line between Jurong East and Joo Koon stations was delayed on Thursday morning due to a train fault. Operator SMRT said that this started at about 8.30am, when an eastbound train experienced a train fault and was withdrawn as a safety precaution. Passengers on board were asked to alight at Jurong East Station. The train travelling behind the stalled train was used to help send it back to the depot. This affected service between Jurong East and Joo Koon stations, in both directions. Passengers at these stations would have experienced a delay of 20 to 30 minutes. SMRT said the high train frequencies during the rush hour can lead to congestion when there is a train fault. To minimise the impact of the service delay, some trains were turned around at Jurong East, Clementi and Queenstown MRT stations for the eastbound service. Announcements were made at the affected stations and trains, while commuters were kept informed through Traffic Watch via radio stations and SMRT's Twitter account. SMRT has apologised for the inconvenience caused. - CNA/cc So high frequencies during rush hour can lead to congestion when there is a train fault...
  5. why blame singaporeans when our leaders asked if our poor wants to eat at hawker centre, kopitam or restaurant Singaporeans should put the care of the elderly above petty concerns, says a prominent local blogger as moves to put up an elderly-care centre at a Woodlands void deck have drawn protests from residents.
  6. Yes. I blame them for two recent incident. 1) MRT breakdown. Why people stuck in the train for so long. In my opinion. They should not get stuck even for one minute. People talk about what power thing. Must wait to shut down. Then I say like this "die" liao. If fire or bomb how? So power aside. During this kind of situation. I don't think it is difficult to get pple out of the train. We are all "SAF" trained. Understand the train only got one driver. So we just need someone from the nearest station to run to the train. OK. RUN is the word. Not WALK. And be the leader to lead everyone out while the train driver be the last to leave ensuring everyone is out. We can't even do this simple thing ? Ok. Unless ah gong say it is not their problem. It is "free market" again. !!! Then !!! 2) Taxi fare hike? COE increase so much. We expect taxi fare to remain? Are we fooling ourself ? If i think of that. Why can't they? Or they are preparing to handle other bigger issue ? Like complete breakdown for the whole train system because being an insider. They know it is coming soon? So they got no time for this "small" breakdown? Now i call for one thing. A plan shutdown of the complete system to do a 100% check. Maybe a plan shutdown on a SAT and SUN. So they have 48hrs all to themself to ensure the system don't failed again. At the same time they can have a drill to simulate the complete breakdown of the system [laugh]

  10. "While more than two-thirds (69%) of drivers consciously worry about being killed when driving, only 1% believe they perform worse than average when it comes to driving safely. Conversely, 98% think they are safer than, or as safe as the average driver." Lifted directly from a UK press release I received today - though it was kind of appropriate.
  11. People has been telling me that the recent unfortunate events are the acts of god and I cannot blame the government. I think they are missing the point. I DON'T blame the government for flooding. I DON'T blame the government for the tree falling and killing that poor chap. What reallly GETS on my nerve is that the way they handled all the incidents. 1) Orchard road floods last month and after some superficial study, they just kick the blame to someone else and say it was due to a choked drainage pipe. I mean we are talking about Orchard Road here. Surely that warrants more detailed analysis and study. The government is just concerned about covering its butt and brushing off responsibility. And the worst thing happened. Orchard road is flooded for a second time in one month after the blockage was supposedly fixed. I am emabarassed for the guy in charged. Did anything happen to him? any accountability? Serious, everyone makes mistakes. Nobody is lynching someone because of an "honest mistake" But when that someone makes the same mistake TWICE, it just goes to show they never bother to learn from the first mistake. 2) the tree falling incident. Within 24 hours of the incident, the pepople in charge give the Microburst reason.... frankly, I don't even want to comment on this. from the newpaper article "In fact, residents said trees were pruned early this year when drainage works were carried out. " That tree was a HUGE tree. I passed by there every week. Its crown was pruned and quite sparse. So why did it get blown down within one year of the drainage works? Some resident commented that the roots looked damaged from the drainage works being done. Shouldn't more investigattion be done BEFORE CONCLUDING that the cause is due to microburst? They don't even look sincere in looking for the root cause and just repeat what they did for the orchard road flood one month ago. It sucks...... It is not about blaming people for acts of god. Seriously, I don't think given the number of trees we have, we could have prevented the casualty. It is about responsibility and accountability. It is about learning from one's mistakes and finding out the ROOT CAUSE so that it is prevented in the future.

  13. I know all the World Cup stuff have been posted, just want to poll football fans general feeling about the screening of the World Cup 2010. For me, I will NOT pay such exorbitant fee to watch the WC. If I do, the next WC will probably cost more. Who's to blame? I blame the telcos, they inflated the BPL rights to broadcast so much that who wouldn't take notice and try to make something out of the WC.
  14. Quakes blamed on 'immodest women' Women who wear revealing clothing and behave promiscuously are to blame for earthquakes, an Iranian cleric says. Hojjat ol-eslam Kazem Sediqi, the acting Friday prayer leader in Tehran, said women should stick to strict codes of modesty to protect themselves. "Many women who do not dress modestly lead young men astray and spread adultery in society which increases earthquakes," he explained. Tens of thousands of people have died in Iran earthquakes in the last decade. Mr Sediqi was delivering a televised sermon at the Tehran University campus mosque last Friday on the need for a "general repentance" by Iranians when he warned of a "prevalence of degeneracy". "What can we do to avoid being buried under the rubble? There is no other solution but to take refuge in religion and to adapt our lives to Islam's moral codes," he said. 'Disappoint God' Correspondents say many young Iranians sometimes push the boundaries of how they can dress, showing hair under their headscarves or wearing tight-fitting clothes. Mr Sediqi also described the violence following last year's disputed presidential election - the result of which prompted thousands of people to hold mass protests - as a "political earthquake". "Now if a natural earthquake hits Tehran, no one will be able to confront such a calamity but God's power, only God's power. So lets not disappoint God." More than 25,000 people died when a powerful earthquake hit the ancient city of Bam in 2003. Seismologists have warned that the capital, Tehran, is situated on a large number of tectonic fault lines and could be hit by a devastating earthquake soon. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said many of Tehran's 12 million inhabitants should relocate. There are plans to build a purpose built new capital near Qom. 16. it takes two to clap why just blame the boy boy if he is the parent shouldnt he be ashamed for not being able to control his daugther how many of you out there have violated your virginity before the legal age i only counting those with fellow humans ... no encounters with pontianak or hantu counted http://divaasia.com/article/4252 Dad: My teen is too young by Desmond Ng IT WAS bad enough for this father to find out that his 14-year-old girl had been having sex regularly. But things got worse. Even after making a police report and repeatedly warning his daughter's boyfriend, the sexual trysts continued right under his nose. It all started when the father, David, found out that his daughter had sex with a 17-year-old polytechnic student last November. The young couple have been together for over a year. He hit the roof when he found out about it in January. To protect the identity of the daughter, we are not giving the real names of those involved. When David, who is in his 40s, first wanted to report the boyfriend to the police, he decided against it to give the boy one more chance. In the eyes of the law, girls aged between 12 and 14 are considered victims of statutory rape. Cases involving girls below the age of 12 are investigated as rape. The boy could have been jailed up to 10 years or fined if he had been convicted. There have been several such cases in the last few months. David said that he immediately called the couple for a talk when he found out about their trysts. He said: 'I sat both of them down and told the boy that my daughter is still young and can't make decisions (about sexual relationships). 'I also told him that he's still studying, has no job and can't take care of my daughter. I said I will give him a second chance by not going to the police.' Jealousy David said that the boy apologised and promised not to see his daughter anymore. David even informed the boy's parents and told them to control their son. He said that he would never have found out their secret if not for the jealousy of her boyfriend. The boyfriend had called David this January and warned him that his daughter was also seeing someone else and that 'they could be doing it'. David got worried and told him that he'll be sending his daughter for a medical checkup. He said: 'I also warned him that if I did that, I might also be able to find out if my daughter had sex with him. That was when he confessed and said that he had sex with my daughter last November.' After that warning, David sent his daughter (now in Secondary 3) to school every day, while his wife took time off daily from work to fetch her home in the afternoon. David said he tried talking to his daughter but she was non-communicative and didn't want to talk about her relationship with the boyfriend. Their precautions came to naught. Their daughter continued to keep in contact with her boyfriend secretly, and even skipped lessons to meet him. David found out that she had sex again with the boyfriend in January after reading an SMS on her handphone that she had sent to the boyfriend. Her message said that she was guilty about having sex again and wondered if she could be pregnant. Furious, David made a police report against the boy that month. He said: 'We're under tremendous stress having to make a living and to guard her. We are very concerned that our daughter might end up pregnant or even get Aids.' Then something else happened. In February this year, his daughter jumped down from the second floor of their condo and fractured both her arms. Said David: 'We had locked the main door to prevent her from leaving the house but we didn't know she'd jump out of her bedroom window. 'And even with her fractured arms, she still managed to go to her boyfriend's place.' The daughter spent two weeks in hospital for her fractured arms and also received psychological help. The boy, however, was let off with a police warning in March. Helpless But even after that police warning, the couple continued to have sex, which infuriated David even more. He found out from his daughter's blog that the couple had sex again in May this year. He said: 'I had already warned the guy and reported him to the police. He was let off with a warning but now, he's still having sex with my daughter. 'As a parent, I am really helpless. What can I do? I can't imprison my daughter.' He said that while his daughter has shown signs of improvement and even wrote an apology letter to her mother, it is still too early to conclude that the problem is over. David said that he has since made another police report in May. The police said that investigations are ongoing and it's inappropriate to comment at this time. Former deputy public prosecutor Tan Hee Joek said that generally, the factors that could've been considered on whether to charge the accused would be the age of the accused and the relationship between the accused and the victim. Mr Tan, now in private practice at Tan See Swan & Co, explained: 'The age of the accused is very important. It would tell you roughly if the victim was taken advantage of by someone older who preys on younger girls. 'But if both of them are teenagers and they do have a close boyfriend-girlfriend relationship, then that would be taken into consideration.' In such cases, it's not unusual that the accused is let off with a stern warning first, he said. Said Mr Tan: 'If it happens again, then the authorities might take more serious action against the offender. You can't keep on giving warnings. For the first time, the accused may claim that he didn't know it's serious. 'But after being warned, he can't rely on that as mitigation, especially when he has ignored the warning blatantly.' This article was first published in The New Paper more: lawyer, teen pregnancy, teen sex readers' comments I find it very amusing that his silly daughter would jump off the 2nd story window just to have sex with the boy.. is she so starved of sex? Sounds like a nympho to me! I wonder what would happen if he moves to a higher floor, would she then die for sex? I am curious to know if the 17 yr old is that good in bed? I think he can have more pleasure and a side income by sleeping with older women instead of minors. Posted by Magenta on Fri, 3 Jul 2009 at 18:54 PM Isnt it a crime to have sex with a minor? Surely it cannot be right for the boy to be let off with just a warning. Even if he is also a minor he might have been let off from a jail term but just given a warning with no curfew or some other form of disciplinary action definitely sounds like something is amiss. Anyhow since he has done it again this time he cannot get away. You should press the police for some action. This however does not solve the problem if your daughter remains infatuated and continues to do silly things, you will probably need the help of professional counselors. Posted by micky2008 on Fri, 3 Jul 2009 at 16:38 PM Why not just send him to boys' home ... can't the police do anything ... why is that the authorities are finding their hands tied on such a simple matter. Sex on more time Boys' home until 21yr for the boy ... Same for the girl too ... why make it so easy for them ... talk is cheap ... Why isn't this a problem that can be resolved quickly? What is wrong with our society? Posted by Twister2 on Fri, 3 Jul 2009 at 14:05 PM

  19. April 28, 2008 Not fair to blame all car workshops for high claims I REFER to last Monday's article, 'Puncturing inflated motor claims'. We take this opportunity to correct some misconceptions concerning motor insurance claims and put them in the right perspective. Repair costs usually vary due to different repair methods, parts used and quality of repair. In cases of cash repair, owners usually ask workshops to minimise repair cost, by repairing instead of replacing parts. In such instances, workshops are also not obliged to provide repair warranty on jobs and materials used. Incidental cost like loss of use or replacement cars will also not come into the picture. On the other hand, in the case of insurance claims, professional loss adjusters appointed by the insurance company or car owner assess the damage and recommend the cost to repair the car back to roadworthy or pre-accident condition. In the case of newer cars, new and genuine part replacements are often expected. It is also essential for workshops to ensure good quality repair and to provide warranty. With the involvement of adjusters, workshops are therefore not in a position to 'inflate' repair bills. The total claim amount submitted to insurance companies would also include the incidental costs not found in the case of cash repairs. While insurers have pushed the bulk of the blame for their losses on 'inflated' claims, they have not detailed their respective payouts on repair cost and expenses for car rental, medical expenses, survey fees, search fees, legal fees and so on, thus casting a wrong light on repairers. It is also interesting to note that insurance companies are often willing to pay distributor workshops a premium price for repair, but accuse independent workshops of inflating claims, even though they charge a much lower price. We give an example here. In one instance, our member proposed to replace a windscreen for about $700 but was turned down by the insurance company. It later came to light that the insurance company paid around $1,500 to the distributor workshop for the same job. There are black sheep in every trade but the majority of honest workshops should not be unfairly implicated with such general accusations. We are open to work with the General Insurance Association to address the industry issue if it is willing to respond to our numerous requests for dialogue sessions. Bernard Low President Singapore Motor Workshop Association
  20. Everyday we see and hear sillyporeans complain complain even in this forum ranging from the price of a car to maintenance cost of a car including public transportation if we look careful and analyse the situation The MIW is not totally to blame we were given a chance every 5 years to correct the situation but for the past 40 years we have been given them a mandate a mandate to do everything and anything because we trust and believe them in their manifesto so what why do we complain so much basically we got no guts to stand for what we believe, greedy beyond believe that we are willing to trade our principles for a HDB upgrade we know the opposition is weak but what have we done to help, we only know how to criticize if we are going to survive this 5-10years we need to put our heads together (the one that rest on our shoulder)
  21. From BizTimes: ONE important change to the NCD, or 'No Claim Discount', accompanied the GIA's adoption of the 'Barometer of Liability'. Previously, getting a discount on your automobile insurance premium depended on the principle of 'No Claim'. This meant the only way a motorist could enjoy a premium discount was if no claim was made against his policy, either by himself or others. For example, if Driver A claims under his own policy for repairs to his own car, his NCD is affected even if the accident that led to the claim being lodged was entirely the fault of Driver B. To retain his NCD, Driver A has to claim against Driver B, who was responsible for the accident. Driver A then furnishes proof to his insurer of the successful recovery of his claim in full. But 'No Claim' now operates on the 'No Blame' principle. This means that even if a claim is lodged by a motorist against his own policy for repairs to his car following a collision with an other vehicle, the NCD - the name remains the same - will not be affected if it is clear that the accident was caused more by the fault of the other party. And 'No Blame' is interpreted as a situation where the motorist is 20 per cent or less to blame for an accident in terms of the 'Barometer of Liability', rather than a strict situation of no blame.
