  3. Singapore laps behind Malaysia in giving....... or I should say "donations" ... Yahoo : Singapore behind Malaysia, Thailand, while Myanmar tops World Giving Index Singapore may be on top of many indexes, but when it comes to charity and giving, we don't fare so well. Singapore ranks at number 34 out of 145 on the World Giving Index this year, behind neighbouring countries like Malaysia, at 10th spot, and Thailand, at number 19. Myanmar, one of the least developed countries in Asean, is number one in the The Charities Aid Foundation's (CAF) sixth World Giving Index, holding the position for the second year running. According to the report, the generosity of Myanmarese people could be attributed to Theravada Buddhism, as charitable giving is integral to the religious observance. The index measures three kinds of generosity, namely the giving of money, time, and helping a stranger. On the ‘helping a stranger’ table, which asks if a person has helped a stranger in the last month, Singapore is at number 89. However, Singapore ranks much higher up on the ‘donating money’ table at number 18, just below Malaysia at number 17. On the ‘volunteering time’ table, Singapore stands at number 42. To summarise the index findings, CAF chief executive John Low said, “It is heartening to see that even during these times of economic uncertainty across the word, people are increasingly likely to donate money to causes that help others.” He added that it was humbling to see countries which have suffered adversity continue to score highly on the index. Singapore Red Cross secretary general and chief executive officer Benjamin William told Yahoo Singapore there has actually been an increasing trend of people volunteering in Singapore. “Many individuals and families are struggling to make ends meet, as well as coping with social and physical challenges such as chronic illnesses, disabilities, or family tragedies… we hope that Singaporeans will not forget these vulnerable people amongst us, and also channel their generosity and compassion to support the humanitarian services aimed at helping this group,” he said. William said Singapore continues to be generous and forthcoming in responding to good causes, such as helping communities affected by natural disasters. “Generally, donors are very supportive of organisations when they can identify with and relate to the cause,” he added. The World Giving Index was conducted on the Gallup methodology, where 1,000 questionnaires were completed by a representative sample of individuals living across a country. In larger countries, samples of at least 2,000 are collected. 4. Hi guys, Some of you have responded to my previous post of asking what what is the allowed number of stays in Taiwan and Japan with no visa. As it turn out now, the other company prefer that I quit and join them full time in Japan. So I'm now contemplating if I should join them for a couple of reasons - I liked the job there - Pay wise is not too bad, about 20% more than my current salary, inclusive of employer portion of CPF contribution. Apartment is provided. - I don't like my work here. Being in IT professional, I find myself stagnating here.... On the other hand, - I will need to be stationed in Japan. They proposed to allow me to go back for 2 weeks every 10 weeks but I am requesting to allow me to come back for 2 weeks every 6 weeks. I still have kids in primary school. - Not young anymore. Coming to 40. I had been through such experience 5 years ago but that time, the company just allowed me to go back a week every 4 months and relationship with wife really strained. After a year, I had to quit and come back to look for another job. This time round, it was my wife who suggested why don't I go back to Japan to work since I like the work there and I wasn't happy here.... She was happy to see the improved arrangement on the better salary structure and more time allowed to come back to SG as I started discuss with the Japan counterpart.... So guys who had experience in going oversea to work without family. How do you guys cope?

From STOMP: http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg...o_eat_baby.html Posted on 17 May 2012 Lion desperately tries to eat baby -- from behind a glass wall STOMPer Fangsyou is amused with this lioness trying to attack a baby at a zoo. The lioness was pawing desperately at the baby and trying to bite its head, but was obstructed by the glass. The STOMPer is happy that humans are safe from attacks by wild animals. Said the STOMPer: "I saw this crazy video of a lion trying to chomp off a baby's head. "Luckily this is at a zoo and there's a sheet of glass separating the baby from the animal. "All hell will break lose when an animal like this escapes from the zoo. "We are so fortunate to live in a world without predators hunting us!"

"This picture was taken in Jurong West, on 23 April 2012."
  12. Just passed by slip road from SLE to CTE, almost accident. Suddenly saw a car broken down on left lane. Have to switch to right lane but traffic from right very fast, including speeding BMW (yeah why BMW again) All bros and sis, if your car break down, please don't put your warning triangle 1 meter behind your car. People cannot react. Please put 2 ~ 3 meters behind slightly to the left side, so that people can be warned without crashing into your triangle/car.

I found this photo floating around teh internets which may or may not be the reason for the fare hike. Not to be outdone, there are rumours that CityCab is also planning a new surcharge for customers who want to be the Elite of Elite Taxi customers. Soon you will see the pre-peak taxi surcharge, pre-midnight-disappearance surcharge, the driver-lunch-hour & changing shift surcharge. My other predictions: 2012: "Comfort Del-Groan Taxis is pleased to announce that the new surcharge-less period of the day is now 2.15pm to 3.15pm." 2013: "Comfort Del-groan Taxis is pleased to announce that there will be no fare surcharge on days beginning with "G"." 2014: "Comfort Del-groan Taxis is pleased to announce that there will now only be two surcharges: peak and more-peak." (In case you are wondering, these are NOT real photos of Singapore cabs but are cleverly photoshopped images by witty internet persons.)

  18. http://www.todayonline.com/Singapore/EDC11...rney-experience S'pore 18th in that journey experience Survey shows nearly 8 in 10 public transport commuters dissatisfied by Neo Chai Chin 04:46 AM May 16, 2011 SINGAPORE - When it comes to getting around the island, Singaporeans apparently have a worse journey experience than do commuters in New Delhi or Kuala Lumpur. The Republic ranked 18th in a survey of 23 cities on public and private transport journey experiences. Copenhagen, Seattle and Sydney had the most satisfied commuters, according to the inaugural Journey Experience Index by business research and consulting firm Frost and Sullivan. Singapore scored 54.5 points, below the global benchmark of 61. Those travelling on public transport indicated a higher level of discontent: Out of 740 public transport commuters and 674 private transport commuters polled here, 77.5 per cent and 57 per cent respectively were dissatisfied with their journey experience. A comparative breakdown for the other cities was not immediately available. However, one reason Singapore did not do better in the index could be the relatively high percentage of journeys made on public transport, as cities with higher car usage tended to record greater satisfaction in the overall journey experience, said Mr Vivek Vaidya, Frost's Asia-Pacific vice-president of its automotive and transportation practice. The index gave equal weightage to four areas: Timeliness in reaching one's destination, value-for-money, convenience and overall journey experience. Mr Vaidya said the main frustrations of public transport commuters were overcrowding, switching between different modes of transport as well as getting to and from their homes and train stations. Car owners said their journey times were predictable, but groused about the lack of value-for-money, with charges such as Electronic Road Pricing, he said. Transport analyst Lee Der Horng of the National University of Singapore was surprised that Singapore ranked below cities such as Beijing and Kuala Lumpur. But the findings suggest room for improvement in bus services here, he said. A significant percentage of commuters get to train stations by bus, and "now that we have more MRT lines, transfer between (different) modes becomes more and more common", he said. Train services are relatively predictable, but buses, which are subject to road and traffic conditions, are less so, he said. "So, how to eliminate those uncertainties in bus services - that's what the operators and regulator should pay extra attention to," he said. Frost's findings vary from a customer satisfaction survey commissioned by the Land Transport Authority, the results of which were released earlier this year. Of 3,100 public transport commuters polled last October, 92.2 per cent were satisfied with service, according to the latter. Respondents gave an average service rating of 7.3 out of 10. Commuters were asked to rate satisfaction levels in eight areas including comfort, waiting time and reliability. Associate Professor Lee noted that the two surveys' methodologies were different and should not be compared. In reply to queries, the LTA told MediaCorp it was doing its best to increase transport system capacity and will spend S$60 billion over the next 10 years to expand the rail network. Since last June, when LTA began quarterly reviews to improve heavily utilised bus services, 51 services have been improved through higher frequency and deployment of higher-capacity buses. "The LTA will also continue to build new road infrastructure to cater to travel demands," a spokesperson said.

  20. ESPN Latest : Chinese government targets Liverpool deal Soccernet has had it confirmed from sources close to the Liverpool takeover bid that Kenny Huang is backed by the China Investment Corporation (CIC), an investment arm of the Chinese Government which owns a stake in Canary Wharf. Chairman Martin Broughton is hoping to complete a sale of the club before the end of the month with several interested parties having come forward. According to reports in several of Thursday morning's newspapers, the rival offer from Syrian Yahya Kirdi will not be successful. CIC, which invests China's cash reserves in foreign countries, is only willing to repay to debt to Royal Bank of Scotland and Barclays Capital, leaving the North American duo with no return on their investment. But they are believed to be at the top of Broughton's list of interested parties. Representatives of Kirdi have claimed to be "in the final stage of negotiation" but that appears to be wide of the mark, with the CIC bid - spearheaded by businessman Kenny Huang - at the head of the queue. Huang's representatives are remaining tight-lipped on where their money is coming from. "We will not confirm or deny any matter in relation to the Liverpool Football Club unless and until we and the representatives of Liverpool FC have chosen to do so jointly,'' said a spokesman for the Hong Kong-based businessman. CIC is said to have assets of

According to a report out of Germany, Toyota's chief test driver has died in a crash on highway 410 near the Nurburgring after veering into the oncoming lane and colliding with two others test drivers driving a BMW. While the two BMW test drivers survived the crash, the yet-unnamed Toyota driver died behind the wheel of the recently spied LFA Nurburgring Edition he was driving. The report says that the driver of the LF-A was 67 years old and Toyota's chief test driver, which leads us to believe that he is Hiromu Naruse, In addition to being the company's chief test driver, Naruse is also Akio Toyoda's personal driver and the Godfather of the LFA. 22. Seems that Honda is lagging behind in terms of engine technology. Latest buzz in engine is high compression direct injection (12:1) and variable valve lift. But Honda don't seems to be having any of these technology for its engines, not even high end ones. The FD2R still using the K20A engine which is like dunno how many years old with no VVL and no direct injection.
