  1. I'm sure some bro's company is going thru the abv mentioned exersice. After working 12+yrs in my current company, finally I may be on the chopping board soon. Just wondering, if being retrenched, is it compulsory for a company to give out payout, golden handshake, 1mth/1year and so on? Can a company just terminate you and pay you 1 mth and ask you to fly kite? Big MNC might have to cash to so call retrench you but how about smaller company? If they don't have the cash, probably they'll find a way to terminate you or even fire you.

Dear Employees: Due to the current financial situation caused by the slowdown in the economy, Management has decided to implement a scheme to put workers of 40 years and above on early retirement. This scheme will be known as RAPE (Retire Aged People Early). Persons selected to be RAPED can apply to management to be considered for SHAFT scheme (Special Help After Forced Termination). Persons who have been RAPED and SHAFTED will be reviewed under the SCREW program (Scheme Covering Retired-Early Workers). A person may be RAPED once, SHAFTED twice and SCREWED as many times as Management deems appropriate. Persons who have been RAPED could get AIDS (Additional Income for Dependants & Spouse) or HERPES (Half Earnings for Retired Personnel Early Severance). Obviously persons who have AIDS or HERPES will not be SHAFTED or SCREWED any further by Management. Persons who are not RAPED and are staying on will receive as much s--t (Special High Intensity Training) as possible. Management has always prided itself on the amount of s--t it gives employees. Should you feel you do not receive enough s--t, please bring this to the attention of your Supervisor, who has been trained to give you all the s--t you can handle.   5. Basically I wrote a feedback to LTA asking why is Vehicle Entry Permit for foreign cars cheaper when compared to current COE prices. Basically singaporeans who bidded for todays COE prices has signed up for an extremely expensive price for TEN YEARS. Foreign cars just has to pay VEP at $20/day for WEEKDAYS. It is FREE on weekends. This is the reply. I mean got reply like not reply. So what is LTA's stand???? never say anything at all. LTA is getting really bad ---------------- Dear Sir, I would like to take this opportunity to clarify on the VEP scheme for foreign-registered cars in Singapore. The Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) is a scheme for foreign car owners who drive in for business and tourism reasons. For this reason, the VEP fee is levied on foreign-registered cars to mitigate the cost difference of using foreign and Singapore-registered cars due to differences in road tax, insurance, fuel, etc. The VEP fees is regularly reviewed and is currently under review. Failure to do so within 2 weeks from the date of the letter, my company's information will be deleted from the Singapore Company Register database. Not only i receive, the company which i employed in also receive this letter. Think how lucky you are to be able to do just that - breathe. You might have got caught in bad traffic today, or had a bad sleep because your beautiful babies kept you awake, or your hairdresser cut your hair too short. Your new fake nails might have got a chip, your boobs are too small, or you have cellulite on your arse and your belly is wobbling. Let all that shit go.. I swear you will not be thinking of those things when it is your turn to go. It is all SO insignificant when you look at life as a whole. I’m watching my body waste away right before my eyes with nothing I can do about it and all I wish for now is that I could have just one more Birthday or Christmas with my family, or just one more day with my partner and dog. Just one more. I hear people complaining about how terrible work is or about how hard it is to exercise - Be grateful you are physically able to. Work and exercise may seem like such trivial things ... until your body doesn’t allow you to do either of them. I tried to live a healthy life, in fact, that was probably my major passion. Appreciate your good health and functioning body- even if it isn’t your ideal size. Look after it and embrace how amazing it is. Move it and nourish it with fresh food. Don’t obsess over it. Remember there are more aspects to good health than the physical body.. work just as hard on finding your mental, emotional and spiritual happiness too. That way you might realise just how insignificant and unimportant having this stupidly portrayed perfect social media body really is.. While on this topic, delete any account that pops up on your news feeds that gives you any sense of feeling shit about yourself. Friend or not.. Be ruthless for your own well-being. Be grateful for each day you don’t have pain and even the days where you are unwell with man flu, a sore back or a sprained ankle, accept it is shit but be thankful it isn’t life threatening and will go away. Whinge less, people! .. And help each other more. Give, give, give. It is true that you gain more happiness doing things for others than doing them for yourself. I wish I did this more. Since I have been sick, I have met the most incredibly giving and kind people and been the receiver of the most thoughtful and loving words and support from my family, friends and strangers; More than I could I ever give in return. I will never forget this and will be forever grateful to all of these people. It is a weird thing having money to spend at the end.. when you’re dying. It’s not a time you go out and buy material things that you usually would, like a new dress. It makes you think how silly it is that we think it is worth spending so much money on new clothes and ‘things’ in our lives. Buy your friend something kind instead of another dress, beauty product or jewellery for that next wedding. 1. No-one cares if you wear the same thing twice 2. It feels good. Take them out for a meal, or better yet, cook them a meal. Shout their coffee. Give/ buy them a plant, a massage or a candle and tell them you love them when you give it to them. Value other people’s time. Don’t keep them waiting because you are shit at being on time. Get ready earlier if you are one of those people and appreciate that your friends want to share their time with you, not sit by themselves, waiting on a mate. You will gain respect too! Amen sister. This year, our family agreed to do no presents and despite the tree looking rather sad and empty (I nearly cracked Christmas Eve!), it was so nice because people didn’t have the pressure of shopping and the effort went into writing a nice card for each other. Plus imagine my family trying to buy me a present knowing they would probably end up with it themselves.. strange! It might seem lame but those cards mean more to me than any impulse purchase could. Mind you, it was also easier to do in our house because we had no little kiddies there. Anyway, moral of the story- presents are not needed for a meaningful Christmas. Moving on. Use your money on experiences.. Or at least don’t miss out on experiences because you spent all your money on material shit. Put in the effort to do that day trip to the beach you keep putting off. Dip your feet in the water and dig your toes in the sand. Wet your face with salt water. Get amongst nature. Try just enjoying and being in moments rather than capturing them through the screen of your phone. Life isn’t meant to be lived through a screen nor is it about getting the perfect photo.. enjoy the bloody moment, people! Stop trying to capture it for everyone else. Random rhetorical question. Are those several hours you spend doing your hair and make up each day or to go out for one night really worth it? I’ve never understood this about females
  8. if a person sign a letter of appointment with a new coy, start date of employment is one month later. but for some reason, on the 3rd week (one week to start date of new job), decides he does not want to join, what are his exposure? MOM website say nothing in the MOM law applies cuz the employer/ employee relationship havent start. but coy has every right to persue civil claims. question is how often does this happen? any HR expert here...?

  11. Was travelling on lane 1 at 98 on a 90 speed limit road and got a warning letter for speeding. Was not stopped by any TP. Got the warning letter throught mail. Si bei heng. The letter stated should have gotten a $130 fine plus minus 4 points!

Webb, Chairman Marissa Mayer, Chief Executive Officer Larry Sonsini, Esq., Legal Counsel Dear Board Members, The past year has been an extremely frustrating one for shareholders of Yahoo! Inc. (“Yahoo” or the “Company”). We are sure that you, the Board of Directors (the “Board”), must also be frustrated. Despite reasonable intentions, in the end, the proposed spin-off of Yahoo’s stake in Alibaba Group Holding Limited (“Alibaba”) into Aabaco Holdings, Inc. (“Aabaco”) turned out to be a failed effort due to a changing tax landscape and serious concerns over the potential for massive tax liability. We believe you ultimately made the right decision by suspending the spin-off of Aabaco. Also frustrating for us, and likely for you, has been the continued downward spiral of the operating and financial performance of Yahoo’s core Search and Display advertising businesses (the “Core Business”). Despite over three years of effort and billions spent on acquisitions, the management team that was hired to turn around the Core Business has failed to produce acceptable results, in turn, causing massive declines in profitability and cash flow. It appears that investors have lost all confidence in management and the Board. As of Tuesday’s close, the value of the “Yahoo Stub” (defined as Yahoo’s market value less the value of its shares in Alibaba) has collapsed and is currently trading near zero. The bulk of Yahoo’s current market value almost entirely derives from an extraordinary investment Yahoo made over ten years ago in Alibaba, and the good fortune that Alibaba’s management team has executed well such that this investment today is worth over $30 billion. This compares to Yahoo’s current market capitalization of approximately $30.5 billion. The current valuation of Yahoo implies either a massive tax liability on Yahoo’s minority equity interests in Alibaba and Yahoo Japan Corporation (“Yahoo Japan”) or that the remaining operating assets of Yahoo are worthless, or some combination of the two. While we agree that the failed separation has been frustrating, we are confident that a separation of these assets can be accomplished through either a sale of the Core Business or a spin of the Core Business. Either of these outcomes would result in a much more tax efficient separation than the market currently implies. Unfortunately, it appears that shareholders have no confidence that management and the Board will be able to execute on a separation of these assets or improve the performance of the Core Business. We are confident that both of these objectives are achievable, but will require a change in leadership and strategy. Yahoo’s current management has had over three years to demonstrate progress towards improving the Core Business, but despite these efforts, the Core Business continues to be plagued with deteriorating financial performance and an accelerating number of executive leadership departures. Annual operating costs have ballooned, increasing by approximately $500 million despite revenue that has been declining. In addition, the Company has spent over $2.3 billion on acquisitions. Unfortunately, most of these investments have been misguided, poorly overseen, and, ultimately, shut down. Even with these massive investments, the trajectory is decidedly negative. As shown in the table below, EBITDA continues to decline quarter-after-quarter while spending continues at an alarming pace. If nothing else, the results of the past three years, which follow several other failed attempts to turnaround the business theretofore, should demonstrate to you that turning around this business is extremely difficult. To be successful, dramatically different thinking is required, together with significant changes across all aspects of the business starting at the board level, and including executive leadership. New leadership will have to develop and implement a plan to balance priorities between growth and profitability. This will mean prioritizing and investing in certain parts of the business while at the same time deeply reducing unnecessary costs, selling or exiting many unprofitable businesses and research projects, and overhauling the incentives and compensation programs to instill sound business behavior. Over the past 13 years, we have been involved in similar turnaround efforts with many of our portfolio companies. Certainly on paper, there could be a viable plan to significantly restructure Yahoo, shift direction under new leadership and attempt, once again, to reverse the current trends of declining revenues, increasing costs, and plummeting profits. We, and you, understand that businesses are not operated on paper and that leadership skill and experience is required for complex turnarounds as well as day-to-day management. We understand that executing such a significant restructuring at an extremely high profile public company while reporting quarterly results is challenging. That is why it is necessary for the Board to remain open-minded regarding the future of Yahoo. The Board must be able to assess and compare a stand-alone spin-off and restructuring of the Core Business, as described above, versus the value that could be received today through a competitive sale process resulting in a sale of the Core Business to a strategic or financial buyer. We are highly confident that there are interested and credible buyers for Yahoo’s Core Business. It is our understanding that even after Yahoo announced its plan to spin-off, instead of sell, the Core Business, several interested parties subsequently reached out to Yahoo’s management and Board expressing interest in buying the Core Business. Yet, unfortunately, according to several credible media reports, Yahoo has thus far ignored this inbound interest. This is highly concerning to us because when recently asked specifically on CNBC, Maynard Webb, Yahoo’s Chairman, stated that if Yahoo received inbound interest from potential strategic or financial buyers the Board would engage with those parties: “The Board has fiduciary obligation to engage with any legitimate person that comes forward with a good offer. The Board will always do its fiduciary obligations when something like that occurs.” - Maynard Webb, December 9, 2015 This is unacceptable. By making the above statement, while simultaneously ignoring serious interest, you are sending potentially destructive mixed messages. In order to ensure the best possible outcome for shareholders, it is imperative that you clearly communicate your receptiveness to discussions with parties who demonstrate an interest in an acquisition of the Core Business. Those parties can then confidently commit the time needed to make a bid. Only in this way can you truly compare the potential value received in a sale of the Core Business versus a substantial stand-alone restructuring of the Core Business. For over a year, we have attempted to work constructively with management and the Board of Yahoo. We have tried extremely hard to work “behind the scenes.” We have grown increasingly frustrated. It took significant effort for us to convince you it was the right choice to suspend the Aabaco spin-off. Unfortunately, instead of heeding our advice and concurrently announcing that you would explore a sale of the Core Business, you have now hid behind a plan to spin-off the Core Business and Yahoo Japan without fully understanding the alternative options. We have had numerous conversations with you for over a year where we expressed our extreme concern with the trajectory of the Core Business. We told you that, aside from separating the minority equity interests, the performance and lack of turnaround execution on the Core Business was our primary concern and focus. You assured us for over a year that you had a plan for execution and that you were confident that 2014 would be a low point for EBITDA. We explained over and over again that we did not believe your actions, or lack thereof, would achieve the desired result of stabilizing the business. Unfortunately, it appears we have been right, and each quarter is worse than the last. Your solution to just announce a change in direction of the spin and that it will require another year for shareholders to wait while the existing leadership continues to destroy value is not acceptable. The Board must accept that significant changes are desperately needed. This would include changes in management, changes in Board composition, and changes in strategy and execution. If the Board is willing to embrace the need for significant change and pursue a strategy along the lines of what we have proposed above, we are hopeful we can work constructively together and make changes to the Board through a mutually agreeable resolution. This is clearly the preferable route. If the Board is unwilling to accept the need for significant change, then an election contest may very well be needed so that shareholders can replace a majority of the Board with directors who will represent their best interests and approach the situation with an open mind and a fresh perspective. The new Board can then assess the state of the existing business, including a review of management’s strengths and weaknesses, so that the Board can best represent shareholders in analyzing a viable turnaround plan compared with potential offers for the Core Business. This grandpa hopes some things won't change, especially values. Dear Toby and Tara, You will be 54 and 50 years old, respectively, when Singapore celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2065. If the last 50 years is a guide, you will probably experience as many dramatic changes as I have in the past 50 years. I expect that cures will be discovered for such dreaded diseases as cancer, dementia, diabetes, Parkinson's. Thus, I fully expect that both of you will continue to lead healthy, productive, energetic lives for many more decades, as life expectancy may exceed 100 by this time. ST ILLUSTRATION: MANNY FRANCISCO I expect solar energy to become increasingly competitive and that, one day, it will replace energy from fossil fuels. I expect agriculture to be more productive and less demanding of water. Revolutionary changes will take place in all aspects of our lives, in ways which are unimaginable today. However, the purpose of my letter is not to join the pundits and futurologists in anticipating the changes that will take place in the next 50 years. What I want to do is to talk to you about things that I hope will not change. I want to talk about values, beliefs and customs which are or should be timeless. LOVE SINGAPORE First, you should love your country. Singapore may be a small and young country; it is, however, an extraordinary country. If all goes well, we would have remained a stable, peaceful country with our own government, our own military and law enforcement agencies. In our country, people of different races, colours and religions live in peace and harmony. We celebrate our diversity as a blessing and not as a defect. We recognise and reward talent and merit and we dislike class, privilege and snobbery. We treat our women well and our talented women have helped to make Singapore the success that it is. We are admired for our integrity, reliability and competence. If I have another life to live, I would like to be born again in Singapore. LOVE THE WORLD Second, you should love the world. By "the world", I mean both the human world and the natural world. I believe in the Confucian philosophy that, under heaven, all men are brothers and all women are sisters. It is not enough to love Singapore - you should also love the human family. Because of globalisation and the technological revolution, we truly live in one world and our lives are inextricably linked. For example, we should be concerned about the growing health crisis in South Korea at this juncture - in July 2015 - because Mers is very likely to spread from there to other countries. We should empathise with the refugees fleeing persecution and despair in Myanmar because they are part of the Asean family. Even if, by the time you read this, these countries and organisations have evolved into different forms, we should feel a bond with people around our region, and indeed all around the world, with whom we share a common humanity. We should also love and respect the natural world because the earth is our home. If we continue to abuse nature, to degrade our ecosystems and neglect our duty as the stewards of the global commons, we will sooner or later face an environmental crisis. I hope that you and your generation will have the wisdom to make a paradigm shift to a new and more sustainable model of economy and civilisation. LOVE FAMILY Third, love your family. No matter how many technological advances are made, one thing is for sure: Your mother and father, your grandparents, your godparents and other relatives have loved you from the day you were born. Your parents have made sacrifices and will continue to make sacrifices in order to give you a happy childhood and a good start in life. Remember that the key people in the world who love you unconditionally, in good times and in bad times, are your parents. Be good to your parents when you are grown-up and when they are old. There is a disturbing trend in Singapore of children abandoning their elderly parents. I hope that, by the time you read this, this remains a small minority and does not become commonplace. MAKE FRIENDS FOR LIFE Fourth, make friends for life. Most human beings are social animals. We need the company of good friends in order to be happy and to thrive. Make good friends and keep them for life. Many Singaporeans hold a functional or transactional attitude towards friends. You are my friend only as long as you are useful to me. The moment you are no longer useful to me, I will "unfriend" you. This is a bad attitude and smacks of opportunism. The good friends I have made in my childhood, school, university and at various points in my career, both here and abroad, have enriched my life. DO NOT WORSHIP MONEY Fifth, do not worship money. There is a joke that the main form of worship in Singapore is the worship of money. Singaporeans are a materialistic and money-loving people. My attitude towards money is that we all need to make money in order to provide for our family and to be able to lead a dignified life. My goal in life is, however, not to make money but to help build a better Singapore and a better world. You should remember that money can't buy you good health, peace of mind or a happy family. In fact, money often sows discord in families. Money can buy you a big house and a big car but not a good reputation. It is more important for you to do a job which brings you joy and satisfaction than a job which you do only because it brings you a lot of money. Pursue your talent and your passion and not money. BE KIND Sixth, be a kind person. Of all the virtues, the one that I value the most is kindness. You should be kind to everyone you meet. Many Singaporeans have a selective approach to kindness. They are kind to their bosses or persons in authority over them. They are less kind towards their subordinates. I do not regard such a person as a kind person. A kind person is one who is kind to everyone, including strangers. In my experience, kindness begets kindness. BE LOYAL Seventh, be a loyal person. Loyalty is a virtue which seems to have gone out of fashion. I believe that one should be loyal to one's country, spouse, school, university, employer, friends and institutions. I am loyal to my old school, Raffles Institution, and have never said no to a request from the school. I am loyal to the National University of Singapore, Harvard and Cambridge because they have helped to educate me. Because I served for nine years as a director of DBS, it is my primary banker. Because I served for five years as a director of Singtel, I subscribe only to Singtel for my telecommunication needs. Because I served for over five years on the international advisory board of Toyota, I own and operate a car made by Toyota. I have patronised the same tailor and optician for as long as I can remember. This may be seen by some as an old-fashioned attitude but I would like to think that loyalty, like kindness, should never go out of fashion. "It is hard to put my thoughts into one letter, but I needed to bid a proper farewell to my football family. The Singapore football family. Friday will be one of the saddest days of my life. It is all coming to an end. A beautiful dream that I could never have imagined growing up as a boy from a small town in Doboj, Yugoslavia. The moment the final whistle goes, I know the memories will start flooding into my mind, the hundreds of matches I played, the different goals I scored and the heartbreaking moments when my team lost. Me being the last car. 2 other car infront. Both the 2 female drivers infront came down, check that no one was injured, we exchanged contact, did necessary claims (ofcourse both claim against me). Just the front and back bumper cui. Not those extremely serious kind. Everything seems settled. But suddenly just now. I received a letter from TP. ________________________________________ Dear Sir, TRAFFIC ACCIDENT REPORTED ON XXXXXX # XXX ALONG PIE INVOLVING XXXX I refer to the above accident. Please be informed that Traffic Police is investigating the case because: (a) It has become an injury case. The policy changes that were announced by PM Lee during the National Day Rally Speech hinted at a poignant situation: the government hears the discontent that has been vocalised by the populace, seeks a way to enhance the current system yet, at the same time, it is held back by grave concerns and worries over destabilising a system that seems to have been working well for the country. Housing, education and health-care are the three pillars of any nation. The policies that govern them are therefore always scrutinised the closest by both policy-maker and citizen alike. It is little wonder that changes to these policies are usually small and carefully calibrated steps instead of sweeping ones. Independence in 1965 made Singapore an unexpected aspirant of stardom. However, perhaps only the founding fathers of modern-day Singapore, Mr Lee Kuan Yew and his capable team-mates, each an intellectual in his own right, sensed the great heights that the nation could one day achieve. Fast-forwarding to 2013, Singapore has achieved stardom in more ways than one. Where we were once an unknown island, today our name is splashed across pages on both online and traditional print media. We have come a long way and it was a bitter-sweet journey fraught with great pain, sacrifices and courage. There has been much talk about our nation being on the cusp of adulthood and that the angst that we are collectively experiencing arises from the transition from adolescence. And angst indeed it is. Take for example the shifts in education policies. They have not placated the anxious parents of primary-school students. In fact, these adjustments have made them even more worried. On the surface the negative responses that parents have had seem counter-intuitive. Were these policy shifts not meant to reduce the frustration that they had been feeling? In the system of traditional chinese medicine, the crux of treatment is always at the root of the ailment. Treating the symptoms is tantamount to kicking the can down the road. While the symptoms can vanish overnight because we swallow a paracetamol pill, they are bound to return as long as the root issue is unsolved. As a nation, we have always prided ourselves as a meritocratic society that promises the opportunity of growth as long as one tries hard enough. The message that our leaders have expounded for the last half a century is that by working hard, we will one day attain the pinnacle of success; that sloth is evil and should be eradicated. These are the bases of success in a modern capitalistic world. And these words ring very true. Sloth and laziness are guaranteed to lead to failure. Without effort and industriousness, it is unthinkable how one can ever achieve even the slightest form of material success, save through being born with a silver spoon in his mouth (and even so, the rich but lazy ones will eventually squander their family wealth away). Unfortunately a pendulum swings both ways. When certain human tendencies swing too far in the other direction, the outcome is rarely positive. Our preoccupation with material success has led us to develop what we, as a people, term "kiasu-ism" or the fear to lose. This fear is so overwhelming that we lose any semblance of logic or common-sense the moment it strikes. Our PM beseeched the people to "celebrate achievers, not envy them". His call is sincere and sound as were his calls to the people to be gracious and considerate. However, it is impossible for a nation to become gracious overnight. The roots of graciousness must first exist for it to materialise. The people of a nation cannot become gracious just because the leaders call for them to be so. A gracious society is rooted in compassion and empathy. These two elements are crucial for a nation to become a gracious society. A country is composed of communities. A community consists of many families. A family comprises multiple individuals. To change a country, we must change the communities. To change a community, we need to change the families. To change a family, we have to change the individual. When individuals become compassionate and empathic, families will become so. When families become compassionate and empathic, communities will become so. When communities become compassionate and empathic, the nation will become so. When the nation becomes compassionate and empathic, it will become a gracious society and her people will celebrate achievers instead of envying them. The key therefore is to understand how the individual can become more compassionate and empathic. Policies today are nearly always set with the masses in mind. It makes conventional sense because policy-makers are catering to large groups of people at the levels of community and family. However this restricts the resolution of the policies. They are not tailored to specifically improve the condition of the individual. How do we inculcate compassion and empathy in the individual? Our exploration leads us to ask the counter-question: How do we not inculcate compassion and empathy in the individual? When an individual is drilled with the belief that stiff competition is good, that he must triumph over all others and that he must be the best, it is inevitable that he progessively becomes self-centred. The self-centredness reduces his awareness of compassion and empathy in himself. Over the last few decades, our focus on being the best has led us to become top in many areas. Our competitive streak has led us to become champions in math olympiads. Our pursuit of material success has led us to become a society that needs to be told that graciousness is important, that compassion is fundamental. Does that mean that what we have been doing as a nation was wrong? No, we needed all of that to give our people a roof over their heads and food on their tables. The difference today is that we have reached a level of economic maturity where we now need to look beyond the fundamental needs when policies are being made, and make fundamental changes in policy-conceptualisation so that these policies can help the people gain awareness of their own individual human condition and realise that they themselves need to own the changes that are essential to us progressing further as a developed society. Fundamental changes such as a shift to focus on spiritual growth - the maturing of an individual in his spiritual awareness - will go a long way in helping each and every young child understand that he is a drop of water in a larger ocean, a grain of sand in a larger desert; that his thoughts and actions cascade in the universe of thoughts and actions and make a huge difference in how other people experience their own lives. Through this, empathy can be developed and compassion arises. As compassion and empathy grow stronger in the individuals of a nation, the issues that we are facing now - xenophobia, frustration, kiasu-ism - will naturally fade and diminish, because they are all rooted in self-centredness.
