  2. Don’t get too worried or excited. This thread is about Alternate Way of Automotive Review & Evaluation. Subscription and contribution to this thread are welcome, but with strings attached (pun intended). And dear moderators, this is not just another TKR thread, as it is closely related to cars. We have seen / read many various types of car review, whereby chunks of numbers are shown, in attempt to convince potential buyers on how big or spacious the car is. But as a layman, most will have difficulty trying to visualize what these figures meant to them and their occupants. And not to forget we might not have the slightest idea how to maximize the use of space within our expensive ride… … This thread shall cover rides as small as a Kei car, to large people mover. Here are few examples, and you may like to make a guess of the model name, Ahem err, I am referring to the CAR model name… Which kei car has a boot that can accommodate a person in it? Which Mazda model has such a tiny boot? Which sedan has such a spacious rear seats? Which conti has such flat floor boot? Which SUV allow such easy access to the driver seat? Which Toyota model has such a nice looking interior? Which hybrid model has such a short bonnet? Which MPV still have such user-unfriendly B-pillar? For those that wonder what to expect, see some example in these posts I made earlier: Honda Odyssey http://www.mycarforum.com/topic/2700646-7-seater-mpv/?p=5864291 Honda Jade http://www.mycarforum.com/topic/2700646-7-seater-mpv/?p=5866602 Alphard & Stepwgn http://www.mycarforum.com/topic/2700646-7-seater-mpv/?p=5868342
  3. Just wanted to look around to see how many folks are aware of the actual dismal performance of our Q2 GDP growth, which contracted by 4.7% on an annualized q-on-q basis? It's quite interesting looking at local media coverage of the Q2 GDP statistics, and foreign media coverage (i.e. BBC, Reuters, Bloomberg). Something that really stands out is how the local media headlines and emphasis is on the nominal y-on-y 1.8% GROWTH in GDP, with the actual negative contraction of 4.7% relegated to one or two sentence buried in the middle of the report. Whereas for foreign coverage, the emphasis is on annualised contraction of 4.7% in GDP. To put this into context, SG hasn't experienced such a sharp contraction in GDP on a quarterly annualised basis since the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis. Around my own circles, the non-finance or non-economics trained individuals didn't really have a clue that the economy just hit a hard landing and we are staring right into the abyss of quite a deep recession that is close approaching. Pretty much why explains why most people here are so tied up in debating on COE fluctuations and hypotheticals everyday :) See examples below. Local and official sources https://www.enterpriseone.gov.sg/en/News/2015/July/150714%20Singapores%20GDP%20Rose%20By%201pt7percent%20On%20Year%20In%20Q2%202015.aspx http://www.singstat.gov.sg/docs/default-source/default-document-library/news/press_releases/advgdp2q2015.pdf http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/business/singapore-economy-grew/1982450.html Foreign sources: http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/07/14/singapore-economy-gdp-idUSL3N0ZQ34K20150714 http://www.cnbc.com/2015/07/13/singapore-2q-gdp-dropped-46-on-quarter-while-08-rise-expected.html
  4. http://www.todayonline.com/singapore/defence-ministry-considering-more-ways-recognise-nsmen-minister-ng Response by AWARE: https://www.facebook.com/awaresg/posts/769391113073330?stream_ref=10 Time is the one commodity that cannot be taken back. Not by the richest man, nor by the most powerful man. Almost every Singaporean man has served National Service, and that 2 to 2.5 years inside there, while a somewhat positive experience, does take away 2 to 2.5 precious years of a man's youth. I'm not denying that NS is a necessity, born of circumstances, both of our history and of our geographical location. Not being nationalistic or anything, but NS does protect us as a nation. However, all AWARE has done is KPKB when they perceive that more benefits are going to those who protect the nation. Haven't they learnt from history? Yeah, I agree that everyone should have access to housing, education and healthcare, but how does giving NSMen / Servicemen more benefits restrict the the access of non-NSMen / Servicemen? I've always been of the opinion that those who contribute more should receive more than just the basic. Besides, if women married a NSMen / Servicemen, they would have, due to that marriage, the same access to housing. Education and healthcare can be paid for by the extra two years of salary saved due to not serving NS. TL;DR: NS is a necessity. Recognizing the service with such benefits are a good thing. It's not taking away anything from others, merely giving more to those who gave the most important thing in their life.

  6. Yes. You heard me. We women SHOULD BE entitled to "menstruation leave." Hi bosses, if you happen to read my blog... Please do not misunderstand that I am targetted at you all or the company. I am writing in general. AWARE Singapore finds faults with the NSF's songs and whatsoever that has links to NSF and such. There is a REAL problem brewing here. AWARE SINGAPORE should fight for "menstruation leave"!!! I mean, come on, we have maternal leave and we have paternal leave and childcare leave but I really do think that menstruation leave is needed!!! I am sure there are a lot of female out there that suffers as much as me during THAT TIME OF THE MONTH and especially on the second day! You name it, we got it. - Stomach Cramps - Nausea - Weakness - Giddiness (Due to low blood) - Headache/Migraine (I HAVE IT EVERY MONTH AND ONLY PANADOL CAN CURE WHICH IS BAD CAUSE I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO RELY ON MEDS ALL THE TIME!) - Body Ache - Nipple Swelling Total discomfort apart from the fact that blood is leaving our body every other 30 minutes? And there is also the trouble of changing the stupid sanitary pad every 4-5 hours because it is extremely uncomfortable to wear a pad/tampon/whatsoever. Apart from that, we get urinal tract infection and other womanly problems so easily!!!!! AND AND AND the fact that our emotions are all haywired and the rest of the male population thinks we are mad because we either throw tantrums or cry randomly because we just cannot control our emotions?!!!!!! We have to endure labour and menses cramps and blood leaving us monthly and we hibernate babies for 9 freaking months.. I totally think that menstruation leave is damn reasonable. It doesn't have to be a leave you know.. It could be a work-at-home day? Maybe just one day per month? We could still be productive at home though but we may just be scrunched up on our beds like a shrimp just fighting the cramps or maybe stuffing our faces with chocolate than having to deal with extra acne on our faces during our menstruation period. Before our menstruation comes, we have to deal with our extreme appetite and being judged by others as compulsive pigs!(I know I am exaggerating a little but I just want to get my point across here...) This is a serious issue that the female population faces. Some of us cannot even get out of our beds on mornings where the cramps are so bad or we either stain our beds/sofas when we lie/sit down. DO YOU KNOW HOW FRUSTRATING IT IS GUYS???? Seriously, we deserve menstruation leave. Thanks for reading and no, I am not having my period now. The agony was just over. This is a pictureless post... What did you expect? A photo of a pad? LOL. Jolene Snow *The author blogs at http://www.bitsandpiecesofsnow.blogspot.sg

  8. http://news.asiaone.com/news/digital1/business-ruining-marriages Business of ruining marriages SINGAPORE - If your spouse starts behaving suspiciously next year, Ashley Madison could be to blame. The dating website that facilitates extramarital affairs between married individuals plans for a launch in Singapore next year, My Paper understands. The Canada-based website has over 21 million users worldwide. Its slogan: "Life is short. Have an affair." Ashley Madison has already expanded to other Asian countries and territories such as Japan, and, more recently, Hong Kong in August. Its foray into Hong Kong, where divorce cases hit a record high of 21,125 last year, was met with controversy as religious and family-planning groups criticised the website. This is unlikely to have fazed Ashley Madison, which was launched in 2001 and has enjoyed a colourful history - offending many, but still soldiering on. In 2010, the company approached the city of Phoenix, Arizona, with an offer of US$10 million to rename the Sky Harbor Airport to Ashley Madison International Airport over a five-year period. Even though the city was in financial trouble, it rejected the offer. Meanwhile, Ms Trish McDermott, a consultant who helped found Match.com, accused Ashley Madison of being a "business built on the back of broken hearts, ruined marriages and damaged families". Ashley Madison chief executive Noel Biderman has continued to push his provocative message through radio and TV commercials. It could run into roadblocks in Singapore as well. Mr Samuel Seow, managing director of Samuel Seow Law Corporation, said that an online service such as Ashley Madison is likely to be viewed as "objectionable" by the Media Development Authority (MDA), where public interest and morality are concerned. While the MDA has no powers to govern the content within the website if the server is not hosted in Singapore, it does have the power and the ability to block certain websites from being accessed locally, he said. Figures from the Department of Statistics released in July showed that the annual number of divorces and annulments in Singapore fell by 4.8 per cent to 7,241 last year, the first drop in seven years. Websites like Ashley Madison could change the picture and hurt marriages and families, said relationship experts. Counsellor and family coach Richard Cheong said people who sign up for such services are likely to be looking for "a casual fling or a sexual encounter". "These people could be having issues in their current relationships, but they do not want to leave their spouses," said the director of Hero Training and Consultancy. "So, they look elsewhere, to websites such as Ashley Madison, to get their needs met, even if it's only temporary." Mr Brian Liu, a member of the National Family Council, said the website could destroy "the foundations of a family". You've been warned. Not that the website cares.
  9. Well it is not often you see open disagreement with the old man and it gets published... From ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/...ory_712274.html MARRIAGE, MOTHERHOOD AND CAREER Aware disagrees with Mr Lee Published on Sep 13, 2011 THE stark choice between motherhood and professional advancement presented in Mr Lee Kuan Yew's comments to Ms Joan Sim is not new ('A PhD's fine, but what about love and babies?'; last Tuesday). In 1983, he said: 'We shouldn't get our women into jobs where they cannot, at the same time, be mothers.' In 1994, he said that 'attractive and intelligent young ladies' should go to finishing colleges so that they will be 'marvellous helpers of their husband's career'. And now, Ms Sim has been advised to stop wasting time on her doctorate and find a boyfriend instead. These views contradict the recent statements by Minister of State for Community Development, Youth and Sports Halimah Yacob to the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (Cedaw) that gender equality is central to Singapore's socio-economic growth and that 'maximising the full potential of every individual, male or female, is a priority'. Under Cedaw, the Government is obliged to 'take appropriate measures to modify the social and cultural patterns of the conduct of men and women based on the idea of stereotypical roles of men and women'. However, state policies have not kept pace with social developments and changing gender roles. Fathers are not entitled to paid paternity leave, reinforcing the social expectation that mothers should bear most of the caregiving responsibilities. Flexible working arrangements attractive to mothers of young children are not widely available. Infant care facilities are inadequate for the country's needs. Such policies make raising children a daunting prospect for working women who want to continue their careers after becoming mothers. The State should take the lead in making family a more attractive option for these women, starting with a change of governmental attitude and the policies stated above. The Scandinavian countries have shown that appropriate state policies that counter social norms can reverse declining fertility rates. Public statements made by influential figures like Mr Lee are also important to shaping social attitudes. Remarks that imply that women belong at home and men should be primarily providers undermine the efforts of men and women who struggle every day to meet the demands of family and working life. Implying that marriage and motherhood are more important than education and work belittles the choices and contributions of women who prefer to be single or childless. Such comments also perpetuate sexist stereotypes for a younger generation. Nicole Tan (Ms) President Association of Women for Action and Research (Aware)

  11. Has been listening to news about the AWARE saga recently. The women-folks are supposed to unite together and help one another. Very unfortunately, we find the leaders in their association fighting against one another. It was even reported that the new exco committe threw the old guards out and even changed the locks to prevent the old guards from going into their offices. They have obviously forgotten the motto. Very ironical, isn't it?
  12. However, MOE's assessment is that in some other aspects, the Guide does not conform to MOE's guidelines. In particular, some suggested responses in the instructor guide are explicit and inappropriate, and convey messages which could promote homosexuality or suggest approval of pre-marital sex. In view of this, AWARE's programmes in schools will be suspended and subjected to the new vetting processes the source http://www.moe.gov.sg/media/press/2009/05/...exuality-ed.php special thanks to josie and her pussycats :)
  13. ...yet again, they have come up with such a silly ad that takes advantage of the latest AWARE situation and the cliche of choice is: 'Shut up and Sit Down!'
