  1. It sadden me that these business owners are trying hard to avoid spending money on improving the safety of their workers, by painting a bad picture on the ban of using lorries to ferry workers. I am willing to pay more and accommodate the slight inconvenience for the safety of these foreign workers, who take up shitty jobs shunned by Singaporean. What about you? The business chambers and associations, covering a wide range of industries, were responding to a call on Jul 24 by various advocacy groups and others for a timeline on banning the practice. That statement followed an accident in mid-July involving a lorry which appeared to be ferrying workers, with 26 men taken to three hospitals. This follows various accidents involving such lorries over the years. The statement from the business community, including the Association of Small and Medium Enterprises, released to the media, said: "In the process of transitioning to safer transportation modes for workers, it is essential to acknowledge that society must be ready to accept a change in the social compact." One consequence of transporting workers more safely would be more traffic on the roads and greater commuter congestion, it added. "The call for regulatory change to eliminate worker transport on lorries is a matter of great concern for us," added the bodies, which cover industries including construction, food manufacturing, marine and logistics. On Jul 24, more than 40 groups, businesses and individuals put out a joint statement calling for the Government to provide a timeline of measures working towards banning the transportation of workers on lorries. They included bodies advocating for foreign workers and other groups, a law firm, a music events firm, a mental health advocacy group and activists for a range of causes. Speaking to TODAY last month, Nee Soon Group Representation Constituency Member of Parliament Louis Ng said that he supports the Jul 24 statement, and had at the July sitting of Parliament also reiterated his call for such a timeline ahead of a ban on the transportation of workers on the backs of lorries. The business community's statement on Tuesday was addressed to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Acting Minister of Transport Chee Hong Tat and Senior Minister of State Amy Khor. The business groups said that the situation regarding safety in the transporting of workers had improved over the years but presents "real challenges that demand responsible and thoughtful engagement with various stakeholders". "Over the years, since 2011, we have taken significant strides in enhancing transportation safety for our workers, including the latest requirements under the Road Traffic Act, by closely collaborating with the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Home Affairs (the Traffic Police) and the relevant authorities. "As a business community, we are proud to share that many of our larger companies have successfully transitioned, either fully or partially, away from transporting workers on the back of lorries." The Road Traffic Act does not allow for passengers to be transported on the back of lorries, however it makes an exception for transporting workers employed by the vehicle's owner or if it is carrying someone injured in an emergency situation. The business groups' statement added that geographical constraints, limited infrastructure and economic realities that certain regions and industries face play a part in necessitating the widespread practice of transporting workers on lorries. "Regulatory changes have the potential to acutely affect industries that have historically relied on this practice, leading to potential delays in completing projects and risking the livelihoods of workers who depend on these industries for their employment." It also stated that the associations are "resolutely committed" to working closely with the Government, relevant authorities, labour unions, and safety experts to develop a "well-considered strategy" to ensure the safety of its workers. The statement ended by saying that the business groups appreciate the public's sense of urgency of addressing worker safety, and that they would "continue to navigate the complexities involved and actively seek innovative ways to enhance worker safety".
  2. Hi folks, I understand that LTA had raise the speed limit for vans and lorries from 60km/h to 70km/h. However, the speed device in my dad's van sound off when hit 60km/h. So izit alright to adjust the beeper to sound off at 70km/h ? If yes, any kind souls could advice me where can i get it done ?Thks !
  3. So I wrote this blog post on 3 vehicles flipping over this past week after getting into different accidents (go check it out if you haven't). Anyways, I was wondering why is so easy for these vehicles to flip over upon impact? 🤨 It's quite scary to know that it doesn't take much for such a heavy vehicle to topple over after impact. >< Any thoughts/opinions on it? Also, is this a case of recklessness from heavy vehicle drivers or is there something more to it? 😱😲
  4. I wonder whether the traffic rules has changed lately Are Lorries and Vans allowed to take 2nd lanes of the expressway? I encounter many of them driving <70 km/h ,hogging the 2nd lanes during the evenings on PIE . Are they contributing to the congestion ?!

Number of notices issued on the rise, but other violations have fallen: LTA KEEPING TO THE LIMIT: While most lorry loads keep within the designated passenger loads, an increasing number are violating the maximum limit. The number of lorry drivers caught carrying too many workers on their vehicles is on the rise, going by latest figures provided by the Land Transport Authority (LTA). There were 559 notices issued to drivers for carrying too many passengers on lorry load decks for the first eight months of this year alone, surpassing the number of notices issued for the whole of last year. There were 429 notices issued last year, a jump of more than eight times from the 51 in 2011. Since September last year, every worker has been required to have at least 8 sq ft of deck space to himself, up from 4 sq ft previously. Another rule was introduced to reduce the number of workers that may be carried, if goods or equipment are also transported, according to the remaining available floor space.   9. Since last year, I have been noticing the trucks and lorries speeding and zapping on roads. Whether you are driving Volvo or hummer, if one of these giant kiss you, there are slim chance of walking out alive. Do you agree that all should be fitted with speed limiting device, which only allow at 50 - 60KMH?

Hi, Lately, have observed that we have many lorries & trucks plying the highways epecially during peak hours (both morning & evening timing), where some of these truckes are zooming in & out of lanes dangerously... Maybe it is time for us to consider measure(s) like other countries?...where big trucks / lorries can only go onto highway during off-peak hours? Believe this can help to reduce traffic conjestions / accidents.

Recently i saw a few lorries going around S'pore with "Don't get burned" label all around it[tell people not to smoke no paid duties cigerettes],it is understood these lorries are empty,they are wasting resources[pollution],& taxpayers $$$..i wonder why Health Promotion board & customs waste this type of $$$.?
  12. Time, 1000hrs @ 27th Aug. Location, East Coast Road - Outside 7/11 just before East Coast Mobil. Incident: 1 Lorry (Lorry MotherF**ker) illegal parked outside 7/11 with hazard lights on. Car driving on the middle of lanes (As there are legal parking and illegally parking along the road), want to turn into small road with signal on, lorry move with hazard lights on and car avoid by braking (not ebraking) and rear lorry (kind hearted & honest) hit car. Damages: broken rear windscreen, tail lights, slight damage to bumper to car. Lorry: No damage as it hit the car with using the mirrors. Afterwards, Lorry MotherF**ker drove off immediately. Both car & kind hearted lorry driver exchange details and offer to pay for the damage cause. Car accepted his proposal, took cash and have no car to drive this 4 days as car in WS. This incident tells me that some are good, most are bad. On the way to pick up friend, at WS area, drive quite slow (30km/hr), behind me a P-Plate Commerical Van driver turn on High Beam at me. I drove even slower after he on the highbeam. Anyone been to Bukit Merah WS knows that the safe travelling speed is like 30km/hr and why this P-Plate wanna turn on highbeam at me in such a small road??? Haiz.... Driving Is Like War!!!!
  13. i got npnt but take my word today i was at alps when i walked past a class 4 lorry. what i saw next was astonishing the front tires were so bald that there were no grooves left whatsover, and the driver still drives the thing !, apart from his employer's cost saving measures dont he value his own life ? lta should really step in, conduct random spot checks and fine the companies. never in my life have i seen smooth tyres, and i mean smooth like baby backside.
  14. I was watching <前线追踪> on channel 8 a moment ago. Many companies allow their drivers to drive their lorry home after work. It seems that many drivers are using their company lorries as 霸王车 to ferry passengers illegally. One loadful of passengers could easily fetch $50-S100 and they could run a few such trips each night. Good money, isn't it?
  15. Found this from a website: Anyone has any solution? I had encountered my fair share of fines too. But the worst of all is the parking fine imposed on my father. His work requires him to use lorry (not those huge lorry) for delivery. But becos of the height restriction, he was unable to enter multi-storey carpark to park his vehicle, so he needs to park in the Loading/Unloading bay below his HDB flat. Otherwise, he has to park at a heavy vehicle park which is 2km away. When my dad first shifted from a HDB estate with open-space carpark to an area with only multi-storey carpark, he tried the old way of parking his vehicle, by parking at the Loading/Unloading bay and displaying parking coupons and subsequently a season parking coupon. However, on those occasions, he was fined $100 for each offence. We were lucky that the HDB officer was willing to waive it after hearing our story. Then on one fine (pun intended) Sunday, my dad got fined again. We wrote a letter in to HDB to explain that it was a Sunday afternoon and that 90% of the HDB carpark would be free parking. But it was rejected and the response fails to show any understanding and compassion. Then during a MP visiting day, one of the MP from my GRC visited my flat and I highlighted this issue to the MP. Below is a summary of my highlight:- 1) My dad bought a HDB flat, he went home to take a break and he got fined. Even with season parking coupon, also cannot. 2) Why Sunday also got fine when most HDB carpark is free? 3) $100 is more than my dad
  16. I have seen my fair share from riding to driving... Vans/Lorries just somehow hold up middle lanes in expressways and think they are travelling very fast when i can overtake and zoom past them on the 3rd/4th lane but only doing 90-100km/hr... Hoggers hog 1st lane all the way travelling @ 60-85km/hr till god knows where... somemore in front of them the vehicle is either far far away or no vehicle... Is it because of them tat cause the jams in sg roads? since the vans/lorries like to take middle lane dan we give them the high-speed 1st lane to travel and we go to most left lane travelling faster dan them... Just seen one tis morning coming to work on PIE(changi), this uncle in front of me driving a liteace and straight away enter from kim keat signal and go all the way out to middle lane when he's only doing 50km/hr... not saying tat vans/lorries cant travel middle lane but only for overtaking even slower vehicles dan them but not all the way stick to middle lane and make drivers like me frustrated... i cant go 1st lane as there are hoggers and middle lane these guys are holding up, so left with left most lane where i need to change to middle lane after overtaking these vans/lorries and get to their front when vehicles on left most lane travel slower.... What is this? Gracious society? I would rather put it tis way as Bo-chup society...
  17. u guys realise nowadays those commercial lorry (like dyna or cabstar type) speeding like hell on the road??! Wow on so many occassion... i was travelling along boon lay way that day about 70 (limit is 70 lah)... wah...this stupid lorry was zoooooooom... i was travelling along AYE about 90 on so many occassions... these lorries... wah....faster than me sia! i was on jurong east towards the flyover above PIE at Toh Guan junction...i had to stop bcos of amber/red light... wah... this lorry driven by an indian worker...zoooooom....at easily 90 zoooom passed me & chiong the red light (at that time, the red is definitely in forced). Sigh...if our roads (even minor roads like that) are filled with such drivers in such vehicles...i just feel so very unsafe. hopefully the TPs don't outsource too much to the extent that they couldn't be bothered about such genuine speeding cases.
  18. Nowadays, do you all notice that those van n lorry drivers are getting bolder? You'll see them using lane 1 to overtake vehicles, out of 4 lane, you see 3 lanes full of lorry and vans and worst off, driving on lane 1 like he owns it. No thanks to the garment for increasing their speed limits and allowing them to go on lane 2. Maybe it's part of their fine plan to mess up the highway and have the excuess to up more erp gantry. They don't pay as much road tax as me but they sure get to use as much of the road as me. Not fair man.... Just wondering why tp are not eying them like they eye us for speeding. Hiaz....
  19. Today saw another one of those light lorries with added shelter height more than twice the height of its width. From the looks of it, its CG is well out of place and I suspect when turning corners, its more likely to tilt over. Very dangerous looking Doesn't TP or LTA forbid modification to add height to existing roof/shelter of lorries/pickup anymore? or is there a change of rules? just like allowing bangla to sit behind speeding lorries? Have also seen a number of tipper truck that fills its rear with some furnitures or waste metals beyond its rim and top, especially around Tuas area. Even saw one last week with furnitures stacked such that the height of rubbish is twice its normal height. Reminds me of streets of india where everything goes. It feels very intimidating to follow behind them, in case one of the metals falls. Cannot imagine what will happen if this happens. Has LTA or TP took note of these "new" vehicles on the road lately? Are these modification now allow
