    AWARE

Don’t get too worried or excited. This thread is about Alternate Way of Automotive Review & Evaluation. Subscription and contribution to this thread are welcome, but with strings attached (pun intended). And dear moderators, this is not just another TKR thread, as it is closely related to cars. We have seen / read many various types of car review, whereby chunks of numbers are shown, in attempt to convince potential buyers on how big or spacious the car is. But as a layman, most will have difficulty trying to visualize what these figures meant to them and their occupants. And not to forget we might not have the slightest idea how to maximize the use of space within our expensive ride… … This thread shall cover rides as small as a Kei car, to large people mover. Here are few examples, and you may like to make a guess of the model name, Ahem err, I am referring to the CAR model name… Which kei car has a boot that can accommodate a person in it? Which Mazda model has such a tiny boot? Which sedan has such a spacious rear seats? Which conti has such flat floor boot? Which SUV allow such easy access to the driver seat? Which Toyota model has such a nice looking interior? Which hybrid model has such a short bonnet? Which MPV still have such user-unfriendly B-pillar? For those that wonder what to expect, see some example in these posts I made earlier: Honda Odyssey http://www.mycarforum.com/topic/2700646-7-seater-mpv/?p=5864291 Honda Jade http://www.mycarforum.com/topic/2700646-7-seater-mpv/?p=5866602 Alphard & Stepwgn http://www.mycarforum.com/topic/2700646-7-seater-mpv/?p=5868342
  9. Hi people, please stop taking photos or videos on your mobile phone the next time you come across an accident. Help the victims, just like what the 12 year old did. He approached both drivers involved in a traffic accident to check on their well-being when no one else stepped in to help. When 12-year-old Ashvin Gunasegaran was on his way home with his friends after school, they heard a loud "boom" behind them as they were crossing the road. He turned around and saw that two cars had collided in a middle of the junction of Yishun Ring Road and Yishun Ave 2. Without a second thought, the Yishun Primary School Student rushed to attend to the victims. He was warned by his friends not to step forward as the roads were too dangerous. "I thought someone would step up and help but then it turned out there was no one. Everyone was just taking pictures and no one was helping them," said Ashvin. He approached the drivers one after another and he found out that one was pregnant and her leg was bleeding. He eventually waited for the ambulance to arrive before leaving the scene. For his gallant efforts to ensure the well-being of the victims of the accident, which took place around 1.10pm last Tuesday (May 31), Ashvin was awarded the Public Spiritedness Award by the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) on Thursday (Jun 2). Speaking at the award ceremony, Commander for the 3rd SCDF Division Lieutenant-Colonel Eric Chua said: "You are never too young to be somebody who renders a helping hand. Ashvin is just all of 12 grand years in age and I'm very surprised, in fact, and very happy that he has stepped forward." "We hope all people could do likewise despite the fact that we had people standing by taking photographs and your friends were quite hesitant to come forth. He did so. He did a marvellous job," LTC Chua added. Ashvin's mother, Swares Helen Louisa, 50, who was also present at the award ceremony, said she is very proud of her youngest son. "He is my hero in the house now. I really didn't expect he went all the way to help the two ladies that (were) involved in the accident. So I'm really very happy," she said. "I feel heroic. Because I actually thought that it would be a normal day after but suddenly everyone started calling me a hero, all my friends and all my family," said Ashvin.

  16. We are living in such a sad world.... The horrors of the civil war in Syria are captured in this poignant photo of a frightened 4-year-old girl raising her hands in surrender — thinking that the long-lens camera pointed at her is a gun. Turkish photographer Osman Sagirli snapped the picture of little Adi Hudea in December at the Atmen refugee camp on Syria’s border with Turkey. Gaza-based photojournalist Nadia Abu Shaban last week tweeted the heart-rending picture of Adi — her eyes conveying a mixture of sadness and fear as she pursed her lips tightly. “Thought he has a weapon not a camera so she gave up!” Abu Shaban wrote. The posting has been retweeted 18,000 times, eliciting an emotional outpouring across the globe. “I’m actually weeping seeing this. We’ve made this planet a horrible place, haven’t we?” tweeted user @cosmetopia. Adi has been living with her traumatized mom and three siblings at the camp since 2012, when her dad died in the Hama province massacre that claimed about 200 lives. At first, some Twitter users believed the lost-innocence photo may have been staged. But a user on the Imgur photo-sharing site traced it back to the Turkiye newspaper, where it was published in January, the BBCreported. The photographer insisted it was authentic. “I was using a telephoto lens, and she thought it was a weapon,” Sagirli told the BBC. He explained that normally, a child who is unaccustomed to having a photo taken will either “run away, hide their faces or smile when they see a camera.” It wasn’t until after he examined the picture, said Sagirli, that he realized his subject was terrified because she had seen so many weapons in her young life that the cameras became a weapon in her mind. The UN has called Syria’s five-year civil war the “world’s worst humanitarian catastrophe,” with an estimated 220,000 killed and more than 12 million in need of aid. About 5.6 million are children.

More photos of the Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG

I have always wondered if a Mitsubishi Evolution owner wants to upgrade to another All-Wheel Drive (AWD) sedan which uses forced induction, what would he get? Unless I am mistaken, there are not many options other than the current Audi S4/S6 sedans. Fortunately, AMG has provided another option with its CLA 45 AMG. With one of the highest specific outputs of any road car, the 2.0-litre turbocharged engine in the CLA 45 has helped it to be one of the most effective point-and-shoot weapons on the road in any weather. The engine, which is the highlight of the car for me, has minimal lag and pulls strongly all the way to the red line unlike most turbocharged cars. It sounds pretty good at the top of the range too, although it will not be mistaken as one of AMG's V8s. Reach for the next gear and it rewards you with a loud "barrrrpppp". And I mean 'Loud'. It might be too much for some but I personally love it! On the handling front, it rides softer as compared to its sister, the A 45 AMG hatchback. Unless you drive them back to back, chances are you wouldn't notice the difference. Its variable-ratio steering feels sharp and weighting is fine. Road feel could be improved though. No complaints on the brakes. They are pretty much as good as they can get. Seats hug you snug and also look great. Red belts remind you this is something special. AMG illuminated side step is one of the many features that adds to the overall feel-good factor of the car. While it might be slightly pricey, its looks and talent more than makes up for it. Evo owners, look no further. Click here for the full review.

More photos of the McLaren 12C Coupe

We recently took out the fantastic looking 12C for a little drive and figured that its name could also mean something more in our local context. If you don't get what I mean, do have a quick read here ;) As usual, I have more yummy photos of the supercar that we didn't publish in the feature... High door sill making entry a little tough. But once settled in, superb seats wrap around you snugly. We assume the air-con isn't so important after all, which explains why controls to the climate system are found on the driver's door - away from the centre console! Yup, the important buttons are all here. These stalks are a work of art. Nice to see such a high rev limit for a turbocharged engine. Some of your barang barang can stay behind the seats. Carefully designed vents for hot air to escape from the engine compartment. Steering is wonderfully alert on the move. LED taillights are incorporated well into the rear design. Metal paddles are a joy to use. Shifts are fast and crisp too. 12C basking under the warm glow of the morning sun, hours before we return to reality...

More photos of Audi R8 V10 Plus

The Audi R8 V10 Plus. What a memorable experience. Not having driven a supercar before, I was intimidated by its width at first but soon enough, i gained confidence and boy oh boy, it was a lovely drive. This is definitely ranked pretty high up there as one of my all time favourite drives. I say so because I found myself missing that V10 note, the very responsive gearbox, the security of the quattro system and yes.. did i already mention the V10 note? Anyway, here are some unpublished photos of the feature where the R8 starred in. Hope you readers like it! The V10 Plus comes with harder spring and damper rates than the lesser V8 and V10 models. It rides pretty firm but never crashes into the bumps when going over the rougher stuff. Still pretty good considering it loses the magnetic system which the normal V10 gets. 0-100km/h in 3.5 seconds and 0-200km/h in 11.3 seconds. Credit goes to the engine in the above photo. Plus variant means more carbon fibre parts inside and outside. All in all, 50kg of weight has been shaved compared to the normal V10 R8. Love the way the door handle protrudes towards the driver to allow him/her to open for the door easily. Some may argue that this makes the car feel dated but to me, only a proper handbrake is right. Fun ends at 8,700rpm. Paddles are a joy to use. B&O sound system performs well but the V10 sounds better actually! Sideplates finished in carbon. Sexy. LED headlights piercing through the thin mist on a very cool night..

  22. 2013 has been a wonderful year. A very busy one actually. I have not shot so much in a year before and I have to say I had fun shooting each and every car. So being a photographer more than anything else, I would like to share with you, in no particular order, 15 of my favourite shots for 2013... Giving the Grand Cherokee the SRT8 treatment is such a wonderful combo. Felt invincible driving it. The Range Rover Sport. It can now wear its 'sport' badge proudly now. Probably one of the best handling SUV around. Always wanted to shoot at weird places. Good that the RAV4 had ample ground clearance. My favourite Volvo for this year. I must say the R-design package makes the V40 a better driver's car. Plus, that Polestar blue paint is simply stunning. While the rest of the world downsizes into turbocharged in-line fours, the IS250's V6 engine is a breath of fresh air. And in this LFA-inspired F Sport trim that, the sliding tachometer is darn cool. Manual, 280bhp, FWD with LSD, trick HiPerStruct front suspension and Brembo brakes in a sexy looking hatch. What more could you ask for? Need a fast and good looking SUV? This is your answer. Or get the newly-launched SQ5 if you have the cash. Love the noise, love the drive, love the looks. While most of my colleagues prefer the V6S, I will have me the laugh-out-loud V8 any day. Can't wait for the Coupe to be here. Hidden gem. The best fast-performance diesel for me this year. 650Nm of torque coupled with quattro makes it unbeatable in the real world. A value for money large off-roader. Seats seven with ease and looks good. The facelifted E-Class is a much improved car. Drives well and rides well. No wonder Singaporeans are lapping it up. Until I have sampled the new S-Class, I reckon the Range Rover is the best luxury car for the bosses. The interior is just so classy and the ride is impeccable. Knowing it has excellent off-roading abilities is just another bonus. Some facts about the F12berlinetta... The only NA V12-engined car I shot this year. The only Ferrari I shot this year. And the fastest car that we reviewed that I did not get to have a go in. Oh well. Some facts about the Koenigsegg Agera S... The fastest car I shot this year. Nuff' said. Both the Suzuki Swift Sport and the Toyota 86 aren't new cars for 2013 but both are firm favourites here in the office. Happily both carry the NA flag proudly and are excellent drivers' car.
