  3. I mean the really really 366sqft studios with no balcony, if they work in the city and need to iron shirts and suites how do they dry them? In SG it seems to take days for clothes indoors to dry. And one can't iron and then put back to dryer to winkle it again.
  4. LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The next James Bond movie will be delayed indefinitely due to "uncertainty" from the still unfinished auction of MGM, the movie studio behind the film series, producers said on Monday. The so far untitled movie, which will be the 23rd in the series about the British spy, had been due for release in 2011 or 2012. James Bond is one of MGM's most lucrative franchises. But Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, the producers of James Bond, said in a joint statement, "Due to the continuing uncertainty surrounding the future of MGM and the failure to close a sale of the studio, we have suspended development on BOND 23 indefinitely." The two producers added that they do not know when development of the film will resume and when it will be released in theaters. A representative for MGM could not be reached for comment. MGM last year began exploring a potential sale of itself, and sources said in March the company received a $1.5 billion bid from Time Warner Inc. It was the highest bid received for MGM, but still below the $2 billion or more that the storied Hollywood studio had initially hoped to receive, and it could still file for bankruptcy, sources have said.

  12. By Chua Yini | SingaporeScene -Yahoo News. The Housing and Development Board's (HDB) rejection of a proposal by Toh Yi residents for an alternative site for studio apartments has left some residents upset. HDB plans to go ahead with initial plans of building a block of 130 units of studio apartments at Toh Yi Drive catered for the elderly, despite a petition and proposal for an alternative site submitted by a group of residents. "In the case of Toh Yi, HDB has looked into the various feedback and made adjustments to the proposals to address residents' concerns, wherever feasible," said HDB in a statement on Monday. About 230 Toh Yi residents signed a petition earlier this month to Holland-Bukit Timah MP Sim Ann, opposing the government's plan to build the apartments because the identified site was the 19-block estate's only green space and it was situated on a slope that would make it difficult for elderly tenants to climb. Addressing the residents' proposal for an alternative site, HDB said that it has "carried out a detailed evaluation and assessed this [HDB's original plan to build at Toh Yi Drive] as the most suitable site available in the vicinity for studio apartments". According to HDB, the four alternative sites proposed were unsuitable as they were too small, were exposed to heavy traffic or impinged on car parking demands. Others have already been earmarked for future developments. In addition, HDB will include common facilities within the site, such as a community garden, playground and fitness stations. It has also pledged to improve the accessibility of the area "with elderly residents in mind". However, the petition organiser Ricky Goh Chok Chai expressed his unhappiness with MP Sim Ann's handling of the matter. In an email cc-ed to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan and the three other Holland-Bukit Timah MPs Christopher De Souza, Liang Eng Hwa and Vivian Balakrishnan, the 58-year-old businessman wrote that the residents involved would "manage [their] own housekeeping from now on and probably have to look into forming our own 'management committee' to deal directly with HDB for the internal affair of the estate of Toh Yi". He revealed the presence of a "shadow committee" in place, called the Concerned Residents' Caring Community Committee (CRCCC), and commented that the other MPs of the GRC seemed "bochap" (unconcerned) about the matter. Speaking to Yahoo! Singapore, Sim said: "Most residents I have spoken to told me they do not object to having studio apartments in the estate. Many welcome the idea, in fact. After all, we will all grow old. The key question has always been about the site. A minority of residents have voiced objections because of the site." However, she added that HDB's verdict was a "reasonable outcome that addresses the overall interests of residents in [the] estate". "HDB has evaluated the very considerable amount of feedback we had submitted. It has explained its reasons for the choice of site. It has promised to incorporate community facilities into the studio apartment project and also help improve amenities elsewhere within the estate," said the MP. The petition and proposal submitted by Goh's group has also irked around 50 residents in Toh Yi, who have submitted another petition to have the units built elsewhere. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thinks this is expected, no other way out. Now other GRC MP kaki also got blamed.
  13. SINGAPORE: A 19-year-old student has been given probation for stealing from an Universal Studio locker. Joel Teo Jie'Ao and his girlfriend Candy Han had hired an electronic locker at Sentosa's Universal Studio theme park on June 7. But due to a technical fault in the system, the door of another locker - with valuables inside - popped open. The pair could have reported the matter to the park staff. Instead, they decided to help themselves to the valuables in the locker which had been hired by Madam Lim Leh Kuan. Teo and Han, who is unemployed, made off with items including cash and a hand-held game worth more than S$2,000 in all. For theft, Teo on Friday was given a year's probation and has to perform 100 hours of community service. Twenty-six-year-old Han, who admitted to the offence in June, was sentenced to a month's jail. She was jailed for five months last year when she was convicted on two counts of theft in another incident. The court heard that on the day of the theft at the Sentosa theme park, Madam Lim, a 66-year-old housewife, had placed her belongings inside her locker, located near "the Mummy" ride. About 20 minutes later, she returned to find her valuables missing from the locker. She informed the police and security officers managed to track down the two thieves after viewing closed-circuit television footages of the area. All of the stolen items were successfully recovered. - CNA/fa Whatever happen to 拾金不昧?

  17. http://www.reuters.com/article/BROKER/idUSN0142277220080602 UPDATE 7-Fire destroys buildings at Universal Studios in LA Sun Jun 1, 2008 8:48pm EDT By Sue Zeidler LOS ANGELES, June 1 (Reuters) - A fire roared through part of Universal Studios film and TV studio on Sunday, damaging well-known movie sets and a popular "King Kong" attraction before being brought largely under control after 12 hours, fire officials said. Universal, one of the world's six major film studios, had to close its popular theme park for the day because of the fire but it did not interfere with Sunday's taping of the popular MTV Movie Awards at the adjacent Gibson Amphitheater. About 500 firefighters from several Los Angeles-area fire departments battled the blaze, which caused no fatalities but injured nine firefighters and a deputy sheriff, said Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Ron Haralson. By late afternoon he said the backlot fire was contained to a single structure -- the "King Kong" exhibit -- as firefighters used bulldozers to move burning videotapes and other flaming debris. The blaze destroyed about five structures within a faux New York set used in various movies and television shows, including one sound stage. Also damaged was the "King Kong" attraction, an alley from "The Sting" and a set from "Back to the Future." Sunday's fire burned some of the same back-lot areas destroyed by a blaze in 1990, which whipped through the New York Street and a set used for "Ben Hur." It took years to rebuild at an estimated cost of $50 million. Universal is operated by NBC Universal Inc., which is 80 percent owned by General Electric Co and 20 percent by French communications and utility company Vivendi. The fire caused traffic jams for miles in all directions to the studio, where a building housing a video vault had been badly damaged and the vault itself was "compromised." A Universal spokeswoman said about 40,000 to 50,000 videos had been damaged but the studios either had copies of those films or could easily copy them. The contents of a second vault holding master copies of older and classic movies were salvaged. "Nothing irreplaceable was lost," said Ron Meyer, Universal Studios' president and chief operating officer. The studio said the full damage had not yet been assessed. Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Darryl Jacobs said the blaze was first reported about 4:45 a.m. The cause was not immediately clear. Firefighters encountered explosions from propane tanks and called in helicopters at one point to drop water. Universal Studios is bounded by the city of Los Angeles and communities like Burbank. It is home to the Universal Pictures movie lot and Universal Studios Hollywood theme park. Several acres on the 230-acre (93-hectare) back-lot area, where films and TV shows are produced, were burned but the theme park was largely unaffected. Universal Studios Hollywood houses attractions such as "Revenge of the Mummy - The Ride" and "Shrek 4-D." Its "CityWalk" mall has 65 restaurants, nightclubs and shops. Universal Pictures, with a history dating to 1909, has been a major producer of hit films, and tapped a young Steven Spielberg to make 1975's "Jaws." The director still houses his production company, Amblin Entertainment, on the lot. Other hit Universal titles have included the "Back to the Future" and "Jurassic Park" movies.
