  1. SINGAPORE: Refunds have been made to the Prudential policyholders affected by erroneous deductions, the insurer's payment bank Standard Chartered Bank Singapore said on Friday (May 25). “We acted immediately and contacted all the respective banks servicing the impacted Prudential policyholders to reverse the transactions," the bank said. "As of 1.15pm this afternoon, we have been informed by all the respective banks that all inaccurately deducted amounts have been refunded to the policyholders.” A Prudential spokesperson later confirmed that all refunds have been completed, adding that customer policies were "not affected in any way". On Thursday, some Prudential policyholders encountered erroneous deductions from their bank accounts, with several telling Channel NewsAsia that they had seen deductions 100 times their premium amounts. The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) confirmed the incident, adding that it was "not a cyber attack but an operational lapse". MAS also said that it had directed Prudential and its payment bank, Standard Chartered Bank Singapore, to return the funds without delay, to keep customers updated and to investigate the root cause of the incident.
  2. Recently my car's aircon is not working properly ie cold for a short while every time I start using the car and then it goes off, no cold air. Last nite, ABS and battery warning lights came on and soon power steering was gone. Horn no sound. Fortunately i reached the workshop and left it outside the main door as it was already 10pm. The engine wouldnt crank when i tried restart it to park closer to the side. This morning WS called me up telling me alternator spoilt. How does alternator affect ABS, Power Steering when it's spoilt? Thank you for your advice.
  3. It cuts both ways........ one side, retailers are suffering, another way, SG ppl are damm happy https://sg.finance.yahoo.com/news/glitzy-street-no-more-vanishing-024300021.html Desperate owners are starting to get panicky. The country’s posh shopping center is bearing the brunt of the sharp decline in Chinese tourist arrivals. According to Maybank Kim Eng, short-term headwinds are in the forecast for Orchard Road’s landlords. The report stated that Orchard Road shops are dealing with a new Chinese law that bans “forced shopping” for tourists. Hoteliers are also now focusing on corporate and transient segments as tour groups become more scarce. “Our conversations with Orchard Road landlords suggest that the current headwinds may be short term in nature. Chinese visitors have been declining since last October, partly because of a new mainland law that bans “forced shopping”, which prompted sharp rises in prices for outbound tours in China. In addition, many hotels along Orchard Road have progressively moved away from the wholesale customer segment (tour groups) to focus on the higher-yielding corporate and transient segments,” the report stated. Here’s more from Maybank Kim Eng: The Chinese are no longer coming in droves. Following the political upheaval in Thailand and the mysterious disappearance of Malaysian Airlines flight MH370, there have been concerns that this may have a negative impact on Chinese visitor arrivals. Mainland Chinese typically holiday in Singapore, as part of their tours to Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. Based on 2013 data, mainland Chinese were the second-largest international visitor group to Singapore (2.3m) after the Indonesians (3.1m). Anecdotal evidence points to Chinese tourists cancelling their travel plans to Southeast Asia in recent months. The initial signs of a slowdown are already evident with Chinese visitor arrivals down 31% and 14% YoY in 4Q13 and 1Q14, respectively. More recently, the April retail sales of watches and jewellery, which are highly dependent on tourist purchases, registered a sharp YoY decline of 16.3%. The law was in response to recent years of public outcry in China over extremely cheap tours tied to “forced shopping”. The law, which took effect at the start of the seven-day National Day “Golden Week” holiday on 1 Oct 2013. The upshot was substantial increases in tourist agency costs, especially salaries for tour guides, who previously received commissions from designated shops. As a result, sales of such tours have fallen, even at what is a peak period for holidays.

  7. http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/...ory_808456.html The Straits Times www.straitstimes.comPublished on Jun 8, 2012 CPF Minimum Sum should reflect 'true' inflation THE report ('CPF Minimum Sum to be raised'; May 31) stated that the Government has decided to raise the Central Provident Fund (CPF) Minimum Sum from $131,000 to $139,000 from July, instead of $143,000. The reduction is aimed at cushioning CPF members from the impact of the acute, inflation-driven spike, spreading the balance of $4,000 until the new target date of 2015. When Trade and Industry Minister Lim Hng Kiang addressed the concerns over rising inflation in Parliament ('When big policies impact the little man in the street'; May 15), he cited big-ticket items like housing rentals and car prices as being responsible for the bulk of inflation. As most Singaporeans own their homes, the issue of rents is irrelevant to citizens, he explained. As for private cars, only a small part of the population buy cars, so the majority of people are also not affected by the high inflation. If these are the reasons for rising inflation, why is the Government applying the full annual inflation rate when adjusting for the increase in the Minimum Sum? Shouldn't the Government moderate the figure downwards - say, to two-thirds the actual inflation rate - to recognise that some major contributors to inflation do not affect most CPF members? 9. About 10,000 BMW 5- and 6-series cars sold here are affected by a global safety recall of 1.3 million vehicles. This is believed to be the biggest exercise in Singapore involving BMW, last year's best-selling brand. The flaw - found in cars made between 2003 and 2010 - pertains to a battery cable cover that may have been mounted incorrectly. The carmaker said this could result in an electrical malfunction and, in the worst case, an electrical fire. But it said that it had not come across any injury or accident arising from the flaw. The LTA says the recall affects 8,441 5-series (above) and 764 6-series cars sold by authorised agent Performance Motors, while about 520 parallel imports are affected. source: http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/S...ory_782546.html

  11. Had a minor accident and was hit at the rear side. Not directly at the rear but rear side. so not a 100% win case. The other party is willing to compensate in cash which is more than the actual cost of repair at non AD workshop. I cannot locate any private settlement form from Chartis but thinks this one could be use? http://www.lifeisgreat.com.sg/en/jsp/pdf/o..._Settlement.pdf Under the MCF, I have to file a report with Chartis. Otherwise risk lossing NCD if they found out about non reporting although I think the odd of them knowing is rather low given the other party is already willing to private settle and close the issue. http://www.gia.org.sg/pdfs/Industry/Motor/MCF_Brochure.pdf The question is; by reporting the accident under No Claim-Private Settlement will it affect NCD and Premium come next Insurance renewal ? my insurer Chartis hasn't been able to answer this simple question. For the matter how does Motor Insurance company treats private settlement case? Thanks
  12. I was involved in a traffic accident whereby a pedestrian was involved. Not totally my fault and I have the right of the way. Anyway, as long as a car accident involved a pedestrian, the driver will be held liable no matter how. I reported the accident to my insurance company. The claim officer of my insurance company advised me not to go for private settlement as the pedestrian might jacked up the injury claim if that pedestrian comes to aware that can claimed from my insurance company. My NCD is reduced from 50% to 20% and the premium for my next year renewal quoted by my present insurance company had increased more than 2 times my present premium, even though there is no claim from the pedestrian yet. The claim officer explained a sum of money had been reserved for the injury claim as injury claim is opened for a period of about 5 to 6 years. The claim officer also added that if there is no claim from the pedestrian for 2 years, my NCD will reverted back to 50% and I will be refunded for the extra premium paid during these 2 years. I then asked the claim officer will I still get the refund if I switch to other insurance company. The claim officer said that I will still get the refund from other insurance company if there is no claim as that they will checked and verified with my present insurance company. It is the assurance of refund that I decided not to go for private settlement . I called another insurance company for a quotation for the my insurance renewal. They quoted me about the same amount of premium as what my present insurance company quoted me. However, they told me that there is no refund from them even there is no claim from the pedestrian. I then told them of all what the claim officer had told and assured of refund me, they still told me this is not the practice for their company. The only thing is my NCD will be inceased by 10% if there is no further accident claim, which is the normal practice for all company. If there is no refund at all, it seems that getting a private settlement might be better as my NCD will be reinstated back to 50% and my premium for next renewal will be affected. Besides, the pedestrian suffered very minor injury thus the amount to be paid most likely will not be high. What you guys think?

I was thinking not all business will lose money during bad times, there'll still be some that will survive or even profit. Some of them I think include: 1) Food & Beverage - low to mid-end ones. People still got to eat. 2) Child care 3) Pawn shops 4) .... Please add to the list. Just some lazy afternoon discussions.

  24. VW recalls 410,000 Passats in U.S. market Fri Apr 4, 2008 5:29pm EDT Email | Print | Share| Reprints | Single Page| Recommend (0) [-] Text [+] http://www.reuters.com/article/domesticNew...431773220080404 DETROIT (Reuters) - Volkswagen AG is recalling some 410,000 Passat sedans sold in the United States due to potential problems with heat shields and fuel line components, the German automaker said on Friday. Europe's largest carmaker said it would voluntarily recall all gasoline-powered Passats it had sold from the 1999 through 2005 model years for inspection and possible repair. The wide recall marks a setback for VW at a time when it has set ambitious targets for growth in the U.S. market and is considering building a new auto plant in North America. Volkswagen said some Passat vehicles with an automatic transmission have an underbody heat shield that could be subject to damage, creating a risk if it touches the exhaust system. Other vehicles will be inspected for potential damage to a fuel tank ventilation valve and a fuel line, VW said. Volkswagen said no accidents or injuries have been reported because of the defects. VW advised owners and drivers of the Passat sedans covered by the recall to go immediately to the nearest dealership or certified repair shop if they smell gasoline. VW will issue recall notices to Passat owners by the end of May, it said.
  25. Citigroup planning 'large' job cuts: report NEW YORK (AFP) - - Citigroup, America's second biggest banking group by market worth, is planning "large" job cuts just seven months after it announced a mass layoff of 17,000 employees, a media report said Monday. The CNBC business television channel said Citigroup, which has seen its finances stretched by multibillion dollar writeoffs largely tied to mortgage investments, was preparing a second round of big layoffs. Citing people with knowledge of the matter, CNBC said the total number of employees affected could be as high as 45,000. Citigroup currently employs 275,000 staff, according to its website. A Citigroup spokesman said the bank was assessing ways to cut costs. "We are engaged in a planning process in anticipation of our new CEO and our business heads are planning ways in which we can be more efficient and cost effective to position our businesses in line with economic realities. Any reports on specific numbers are not factual," the Citigroup spokesman told AFP. The banking giant is reeling from its exposure to the US housing slump and a related credit squeeze. The banking behemoth is also searching for a new chief executive officer after former CEO Charles Prince stepped down on November 5 as Citigroup revealed it was facing likely investment writeoffs of between eight and 11 billion dollars. Analysts at Goldman Sachs believe the company could be forced to absorb eventual writeoffs of up to 15 billion in the coming quarters as the housing and credit markets show no sign of improving anytime soon. Citigroup announced 17,000 job cuts on April 11 as part of a global putsch by top executives to overhaul its operations and save several billion dollars in costs.
