  2. New ride-hailing firm FastGo to launch in Singapore SINGAPORE - A nine-month-old Vietnamese start-up is hoping to carve a place for itself in Singapore's ride-hailing scene, currently dominated by industry giants Grab and Gojek. FastGo announced on Wednesday (March 20) that it aims to launch services here at the end of next month, and will begin registering drivers on April 1. The initial fleet size here will be at least 3,000 cars on the roads, FastGo Singapore country manager Diep Nguyen told The Straits Times. The firm currently operates in Vietnam and Myanmar, and plans to launch in five other countries in the region - such as Indonesia and the Philippines - by the end of 2019. Ms Nguyen said the firm invests an initial sum of about US$3 million ($4 million) in each new market. Referring to competition from Grab and Gojek, she said FastGo was "competing with them well" and that it would learn from its rivals' "experience and weaknesses to provide good policies and services for commuters and drivers". FastGo also intends to collaborate with taxi operators here, she added. In response to queries, a Land Transport Authority (LTA) spokesman said: "We are working with FastGo to help them understand and operate in accordance to the local regulatory requirements." The LTA spokesman added that all prospective private-hire car booking service operators must comply with existing regulatory requirements before being allowed to operate here. FastGo aims to differentiate itself from Grab and Gojek - which collect a fee of about 20 per cent per fare from drivers - by charging them a daily subscription fee of less than US$5 if a driver's income exceeds US$30 a day. National Private Hire Vehicles Association executive adviser Ang Hin Kee said: "Collecting subscription fees is one novel way of recruiting drivers, but the litmus test is ease of getting commuters and collecting good earnings." He added: "If they can do more for drivers, such as providing insurance coverage and helping with Medisave, it will enhance their attractiveness and assure commuters that this new app has a big pool of drivers to serve their needs." Others, however, are sceptical about FastGo's chances. "It really depends on how much resources they can put in," said Singapore University of Social Sciences urban transport expert Park Byung Joon. "If they not have much resources to attract more drivers, it will be just another small storm in a tea cup." FastGo aims to raise US$50 million in the coming months to fund its regional expansion plans. In comparison, Grab recently announced it had secured some $2 billion in funding. Said Associate Professor Park: "Unless they (FastGo) can give more to drivers and commuters than Grab, it will be tough for them to compete." https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/transport/new-ride-hailing-firm-fastgo-to-debut-here-in-april so any promo code ?

  5. This article appeared in the papers today. Quite unusual, NEA had to go to court to ACQUIT the company they wanted to charge..... http://www.singaporelawwatch.sg/slw/headlinesnews/37420-nea-asks-court-to-acquit-firm-booked-over-toxic-material.html?utm_source=rss%20subscription&utm_medium=rss NEA asks court to 'acquit' firm booked over 'toxic' material THE National Environment Agency (NEA) has asked a court to effectively acquit a firm that the agency had booked last year for moving harmful material illegally. Galaxy Logistics had faced a fine of up to $30,000 for transporting a hazardous chemical outside approved hours. Without elaborating, the NEA prosecutor had asked a district court on Feb 5 to grant Galaxy a discharge amounting to an acquittal. In reply to queries from The Straits Times, NEA said an offence involving a few parties had been committed as hazardous substances were found to have been transported outside stipulated hours. NEA did not specify who the other parties were but said: "Galaxy Logistics was charged for its role in the offence but NEA has withdrawn the charge based on further evidence. NEA is continuing with its investigations and will take appropriate legal action. Public safety remains our paramount concern." However, Galaxy's defence counsel Christopher Bridges said he did not produce any new evidence in the pre-trial conferences. Instead, he had argued that the prosecution had not been able to provide any legislation that specifically stated that the chemical transported was a hazardous material. According to court documents, Galaxy was transporting a detergent known as Divosan Active SU 388 VTS in a truck along Pioneer Road just past midnight on Oct 2, 2012. The detergent contains peracetic acid, which NEA said was hazardous. NEA issued a summons to the firm in May last year for moving the material outside the prescribed hours of between 7am and 7pm. Galaxy was alleged to have committed an offence as NEA said peracetic acid was listed as hazardous in the Second Schedule of the Environmental Protection and Management Act (EPMA) as well as the Schedule of Environmental Protection and Management (Hazardous Substances) Regulations. However, Mr Bridges said there was no reference to peracetic acid in both lists. He also said it would be unreasonable to read "organic peroxides" in the EPMA to include all types of organic peroxides. There were different classes of organic peroxides and "it would not be Parliament's intention to include non-hazardous organic peroxides into the purview of the regulations and the EPMA", he said. The charge was "too arbitrary and hence defective as peracetic acid is not clearly and explicitly listed... as a hazardous substance", he added.

  7. is this posted before? Times are bad......many dealers chut pattern........... is this the same company that 1 of the forumer dad had encounter? =================================== http://ride.asiaone.com/news/general/story...eaving-some-fix Christopher Tan | The Straits Times | Monday, Apr 8, 2013 SINGAPORE - At least four motorists have been left in the lurch after used-car trader Galaxy Carz closed down recently. The Consumers Association of Singapore (Case) received four complaints last month against the trader in Turf City. Case executive director Seah Seng Choon said the complaints pertained mainly to consumers not getting their cars despite having made payments. Mr Tan Meng Wee, 46, is one of those affected. He got his car after paying for it in cash in mid- January. But the fund manager got a rude shock when his Volkswagen Passat was repossessed last week. "I thought it was an early April Fool's joke." Apparently, Galaxy Carz had not transferred ownership of the car to Mr Tan. It was still under the ownership of another dealer, which repossessed the car. In another case, 3-D designer Doreen Wong, 31, sold her Honda Civic to Galaxy Carz last October. The car carried an outstanding loan with Maybank. Galaxy Carz resold it to logistics executive Peter Tan, 49, without settling the bank loan. The bank is expected to repossess the car from Mr Tan soon. All three parties have been trying to reach Galaxy Carz, but to no avail. Its unit at Turf City is closed. Calls made by The Straits Times to its director Cheong Wai Keong went unanswered. The Land Transport Authority said it is investigating the cases with the police, who confirmed reports have been made against Galaxy Carz. Both Mr Tan Meng Wee and Ms Wong have also engaged legal counsel. Singapore Vehicle Traders Association secretary Raymond Tang said it was aware that Galaxy Carz had closed, along with a couple of other used-car dealers since the Government's curbs on car loans kicked in on Feb 26. But Mr Tang said: "We are not sure if they are affected by the loan curbs, or are using that as an excuse to quit." The curbs limit car loans to no more than 60 per cent of the purchase price, and the tenure to no more than five years. The restrictions sent demand diving for cars, as fewer buyers could afford the heftier down payments. This, in turn, brought certificate of entitlement (COE) premiums down. Used-car dealers bore the brunt of the curbs as stocks acquired before the cooling measures were devalued overnight in tandem with lower new car rates. The Monetary Authority of Singapore on Friday granted used- car traders a 60-day reprieve on the financing curbs to help them sell their stock. But industry players said most will still have to bear substantial losses because car prices will remain depressed.
  8. http://singaporemind.blogspot.com/2012/05/...stand-firm.html Despite the attempts at character assassination. ...despite the estate upgrading carrots....despite the biased mainstream paper coverage....despite sending in the PAP big guns, the PM & DPM, to campaign for their candidate...the people of Hougang did not waver. In 1991 the Hougang people decided to vote for an opposition representative and they knew something the rest of Singapore did not know, they saw something the rest of us could not see. 21 years ago, before the Internet was widely used, before bloggers and the social media existed to pierce holes in our blindfolds so that we could see through the propaganda, the people in this small section of Singapore already saw a different vision from the rest of us. When you see this vision and start walking towards it, you will not be distracted by the little potholes, the little dirty tricks played by unethical politicians, their seductive promises and material temptations. For 21 years, the people of Hougang have walked this long journey despite having to suffer deprivation and threats. This long journey is a journey towards a democratic Singapore. Without democracy, there will be no future for our children for we will not be able to shape our own destiny. This is a journey away from our dark authoritarian past towards a vibrant democratic future. The PAP has tried to gain their support by using pork barrels, propaganda, and threats...but these are precisely the undemocratic things the Hougang people are walking away from - the more the PAP uses them to get their votes, the further the Hougang people will walk away from the PAP. Once a people know what they are doing is right and just, there is nothing you can do to force them off their path. On Thursday, I went to the Hougang rally and climbed up one of the blocks next to where the rally was held to snap this picture. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-S8-qCeDWKbE/T8FS...oto+%282%29.JPG As I climbed up the block, I noticed that it was very clean. I also noticed that most people staying in the block had left their wooden doors open, to let they air in, were relaxed at home with their families watching TV. The tens of thousands of people who have gathered the open field in Hougang were from other parts of Singapore not Hougang. See... the people of Hougang don't have to go down to the open field to hear the messages and be convinced to do the right thing - they already know which road to walk and what path they are taking so they gave the standing space at the rally to their fellow Singaporeans. Singaporeans came looking for inspiration in Hougang to bring it back to their own corner of Singapore. Today we have a govt that does not listen to the people. Does not act in the interest of ordinary citizens. It does what it wants then uses propaganda and pork barrel carrots to make us vote for them. They use their authoritarian powers to suppress their opponents and character assassination as a tactic to bring down their opponents. As they do this, we can see how much our fellow Singaporeans have suffered - the elderly who are made to work at an advanced age, the large segment of workers with low stagnant wages, the high burden put the sick and their families. We look around and see our beloved country losing its identity and changing in ways we do not want it to change. We see little progress in our political system as other countries in Asia such as S.Korea, Thailand, Taiwan transform theirs to be free and fully democratic moving away from old authoritarian ways. I sense many people were worried when "Yaw-gate" broke and the frivolous Png-gate was created and played up that many people in Hougang would waver and succumb to the upgrading promises Desmond Choo dangled before them. After observing them for 21 years, I was confident they would stand firm so I last Tuesday I wrote " <http://singaporemind.blogspot.com/2012/05/you-dont-have-to-tell-hougang-how-to.html> You don't have to tell Hougang how to vote" . The people of Hougang can already see with great clarity where the PAP govt will take this country unless real change takes place. The PAP govt has demonstrated time and again that there will be no change if the people are seduced by estate upgrading and do not vote against them. Once you see the same vision as the people of Hougang, you will have their revolve to take right path and not waver. 21 years ago, Hougang was just small SMC, a little dot on the map of Singapore but the people there knew that this long journey starts with each one of us taking a tiny step in the right direction...and if we work together these tiny steps will eventually add up to be a leap forward. There are many who will distract us, discourage us, misinform us, threaten us and lure us away from our path with tricks ...when that happens, ask yourself what would happened if the Hougang people had yielded to these tricks and carrots yesterday - our nation would have been taken backwards and the small progress we made since GE2011 would have been undone as the PAP will interpret an Hougang victory as an endorsement of their policies and stop the already slow trickle of changes to improve the lives of ordinary Singaporeans. The rest of us have a lot to learn from Hougang to put our country's interest above our own local interest and understand there are more important things than facilities on our estate. By voting for the opposition, the people forego the wet market and other facilities that the PAP dangled in front of them ....they have to travel to Kovan to do their marketing, But no change can come without sacrifice if they had succumbed to the divisive pork barel tactics of the PAP, it will be a great loss not just for Worker's Party but for Singapore. Each political party and MP should be elected on how their ideas and policies will benefit Singapore and Singaporeans ..and not how much money they can redirect from national coffers to use as carrots to obtain votes, That the PAP continues to use such tactics that divide and harm the country tell us they have not changed fundamentally. The people of Hougang inspire all of us to fight against this and do what is good for our country. A friend of mine sent this to me. May be some of us here may have already read the above article. I must say : 后 港 人 有 种 后 港 人 有 骨 气 正 所 谓 威 武 不 能 屈.

  10. SINGAPORE - Even as premiums for three categories of Certificates of Entitlement (COEs) surged further in the last open bidding exercise for the year, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said it is standing firm despite appeals for its intervention to adjust the COE supply. Yesterday, the highest increase was in the Open category - which rose by some $11,000 to hit $76,102. The premium for big cars - those above 1,600cc - is now $72,001, up about $9,500. An LTA spokesperson said it had received appeals from the Motor Traders Association (MTA) to look into increasing the COE supply. But, the spokesperson reiterated: "As replacement COEs make up a large share of the total COE quota, LTA has explained that the COE quota reduction seen in recent months was largely due to the slowdown in de-registrations." Despite suggestions that the Government should prevent a sharp reduction in the COE quota, the spokesperson said "we have to be mindful of the attendant downstream impact if we try to intervene in anticipation of the lower COE supply". One key consideration in COE policy is to ensure that vehicle population grows at a sustainable level so roads can cope. Said the spokesperson: "We have to leave it to car-buyers to decide how much they are willing to pay for a COE to own a car. If we intervene in a rising market, we will end up with congestion problems downstream." Rising premiums, especially in the small car category, will see most private buyers in this category shying away. COEs for small cars fell to $46,129 yesterday. But Tan Chong Motor Sales general manager (sales and marketing) Ron Lim said: "There's a chance of it hitting close to about $50,000 the next time around (in February when many expect another round of quota cuts)." As for cars above 1,600cc, Hybrid Motors sales manager Geraldine Lim predicted that the COE could hit $100,000 in February - and the anticipated spike could spur a buying frenzy as Chinese New Year approaches. Said Ms Lim: "Because of the festive season, people are still buying ... in case the COE jumps further." In general, dealers say they will focus on the commercial car market next year, as COE prices in this category are more stable. The COE for this category went up by $1,500 to about $33,500. Skyrocketing COE prices have also hit parallel importers hard, with many of them reporting falls in sales of between 30 and 50 per cent. Cars and Stars managing director Jesse Tan said the firm has now turned to the business of rentals - wedding cars, limousines and exotic cars - to stay afloat. With additional reporting by Leong Wee Keat and Saifulbahri Ismail Source http://www.todayonline.com/Singapore/EDC10...COE-prices-jump

  19. lifted off from ST online today: kudos to Caltex IMAGINE getting your family saloon washed for under a dollar or your seven-seater MPV for $2.80, when car washers at petrol stations charge about $6. Car owners thought they were on to a good thing when an independent car-wash and servicing company at a Caltex petrol station sold them stacks of 50 or 100 car-wash coupons, each redeemable for a car wash at less than a dollar for a family saloon. Fifty dollars bought 56 coupons. But L.K.W. Automotive Service suddenly closed shop at the Upper Thomson Caltex petrol station three weeks ago, leaving its customers stranded with unused coupons - and wondering how to get their money back. The company started selling the pre-paid car-wash coupons in the middle of last year. It also gave out windscreen stickers to customers to signify their membership in the 'club', and was still promoting the membership deal up to the week before it closed shop. Business boomed. Straits Times reader Stella Ong, 32, said that a queue of at least 10 cars snaked out of L.K.W. on weekends; in the Sin Ming Avenue estate where she lives, one in two cars had the sticker. As one among many car owners left in the lurch, she sent a text message to Stomp, ST's interactive portal, at 75557 with the news tip. A car-wash package deal and membership is unusual. A check with 10 car-wash companies operating out of petrol stations showed that all of them had a pay-as- you-go payment plan, or let motorists use the points from their petrol station cards for car washes. Chevron, Caltex's parent company, said it objected to the coupons because they bore no expiry dates, which put the customer at risk if L.K.W. should suddenly fold, said a Chevron spokesman. The company told L.K.W.'s sole proprietor Loh Kiam Wei eight times to print expiry dates on the coupons, but he ignored the request. Mr Loh was served a notice of termination on June 17, after which he had 60 days to wind up his business. Chevron had hoped he would use the 60 days to give customers time to use their coupons, but he closed shop the morning he got the notice and has not reopened since. Mr Loh could not be contacted for comment before press time. Those affected can now contact Chevron at [email protected] to register their details and the number of coupons they have left. A refund plan will be worked out. Said the Chevron spokesman: 'Legally, Chevron bears no responsibility in connection with L.K.W.'s services because it is an independent operator, but we will not leave customers stranded.'
