  1. Business Times - 19 Oct 2007 Family support system for old folks at risk Middle-aged people stretched financially, sociologist warns SINGAPORE'S emphasis on family members as a pillar of support for older people is in danger of collapse, an academic here warned yesterday. Angelique Chan, a sociologist at the National University of Singapore, said: 'I think the whole emphasis on families supporting older adults ... the system is going to break. 'You're already seeing the cracks. You've got middle-aged people who are just stretched to the limit financially and emotionally caring for their younger aged children and their older parents. 'It's very hard to care for older parents - there's a lot of psychological issues involved caring for someone who used to take care of you, and health care is much more expensive now.' She made the remarks during a question-and-answer session at the Singapore Economic Policy Conference held at Four Seasons Hotel yesterday. According to her, the state will have to do 'a lot more' to address the social impact of population ageing. Her presentation to an audience that included members of the Central Provident Fund Board, public and private sector economists and other academics painted a bleak picture of Singapore's demographic trends. 'Singapore's demographic window of opportunity will close in the next 10 to 15 years,' she said. The country's total fertility rate - a measure of the average number of children born for every woman in the population over her lifetime - has fallen sharply, from six in 1965 to 1.26 in 2006, she said. In fact, 'since 1975, the population has not been replacing itself.' Her team's research suggests that without migration the population will start shrinking from around 2020, and so will the labour force. Worse still, many demographers now believe that 'once the total fertility rate goes below 1.5 it is near impossible to raise it back up to the replacement rate' of about 2.1, she said. She thinks it unlikely the population will be able to replace itself. With the rate of non-marriage and divorce on the rise, 'it just doesn't look so good,' she said. 'Immigration is the only way.' No developed country has a fertility rate that reaches or exceeds the replacement rate, she said. Among developed countries, France has the highest fertility rate, at 1.8. In South Korea and Hong Kong, the fertility rates are even lower than in Singapore, at 1.19 and 0.94 respectively. With her colleagues, she is studying the reasons why Singaporeans are reluctant to have children. 'What we found was that young adults in Singapore still have a very idealistic impression of parenting and marriage,' she said. 'They've got really high expectations about the kind of parenting they have to provide, but they're saying no to the traditional social support systems that used to help in this process.'

New road features aimed at improving safety are being introduced in five residential estates, under a "Silver Zone" pilot programme by the Land Transport Authority (LTA). New road features aimed at improving safety are being introduced in five residential estates, under a "Silver Zone" pilot programme by the Land Transport Authority (LTA). Some of these include special road signs and markings, centre dividers and road humps, as well as speed limit reductions to 40kmh along certain roads. Works will start in early August in the first two estates - Bukit Merah and Jurong West - and are expected to be completed by the end of the year, the LTA said in a statement on Monday. The improvements were decided on after studying best practices overseas in countries like South Korea and the United States, and were announced earlier in the Committee of Supply Debate, it added. 8. I drive a Merc C class and my mum complains of pain in her legs due to the seating position. She prefers an upright seat with firmer seats. Does anyone have old folks in their family and have chosen cars based on the comfortable seating position for passengers? I'm guessing SUVs or MPVs, but look forward to any input.
  9. My buddy's dad was diagnosed with a 6.1cm lump in his easophagus, when he suddenly unable to eat or even sip water last week. Then he faced shortness of breath and was admitted to hospital for a week. The shortness of breath was due to the food particle and water diverted into the lung and cos lungs infection cos the lump was blocking up the whole aesophagus and he had to be on feeding tube. After a week in Hospital, the dad feel frustrated cos he dunno what's going on and till he gets fedup and want the feeding tube to be remove and go home. he also refuse to listen to doctor's advice. Because he is still fully conscious and agile, doc says we must respect his decision. Thus my buddy bring him home. His dad can "go" anytime at home cos doc says he is very high risk of getting choke because of the lump. Thus his mum is very scare if thats happened. Both my buddy and his brother left home early morning for work and will be home only at night. His mum also work in the morning few hours and back watch over him. But his mum very concern to be left alone with the dad, because she might be stressfull and unsure what to do if something happen to the dad when only both of them ard. Moreover, when the mum go to work in the morning, the dad will be left alone at home. Getting a day care nurse is very very ex for him...ard $150 daily for 4 hrs. Other than dat, what can my buddy do to find a helper for the mum to looks after the dad? Any suggestions are much appreciated. The dad is 81.
  10. Sometimes, do you guys think that simple folks are the ones who are the happiest?? Just to share...Last night, I went with my Mom for some CNY goodies shopping at the supermarket. Because the carpark was dammed full, Mom went inside to shop while I waited outside in my car. The place I stationed my car was near Joo Seng Food Centre (I stay at Sennett Estate - Joo seng is across the road). I saw this China couple, with their kid... Hubby and Wife was sharing a plate of Economical Rice, with extra rice, while the kid was happily eating an ice cream... The parents looked so loving (in spite that they had obviously gave up having one plate of dinner each just so that that kid can have his ice cream)... stroking the kid's head lovingly and talking to each other with intense smiles..... After dinner, the father hugged the kid lovingly, and the kid kissed his dad on his cheek and face, while clapping his hands... looked really adorable and heart warming.... Dad walked briskly to the bus stop nearby (I reckon he's late for work...) but before he boarded the bus, he waved his wife goodbye, with a flying kiss... Now... that family doesn't have a car, don't even have the means to have a complete dinner, and hubby probably gotta work overtime at night to make ends meet... BUT... they're genuinely happy... Me... drive a decent car, got a job that pays comfortably for my lifestyle, yet i dun feel the inate happiness these ppl does.... Everyday, work stress and the pressure I give myself to attain certain achievements drives me nuts... So to speak, I certainly feel that simple ppl like the family I saw are the happiest lot around... they don't hanker after wealth, status or success, just content with the pure sincerity and love of family bonding.... Sometimes the more you have, they more you wanna attain.. its an endless chase.... Simple folks are able to detach themselves from materialism and stay happy, living life to its fullest... I used to date an artist girlfriend, who is poor in cash but rich in mind and soul... she tried to make me understand that the enrichment of the mind and soul is indeed what makes ppl truly happy... Perhaps now, I start to understand where she's coming from.....

  15. ASIAONE / MOTORING / NEWS / STORY Wed, Dec 10, 2008 The Star Folk fear angry deity may be cause of accidents Some Chinese believe that accidents on the North-South Expressway near Tangkak are due to an angry Datok Kong (Grandfather Deity) in the area, reports China Press. Residents believe the deity is a guardian of a hill or an area and they would hold prayers for protection. The daily reported that the stretch of the highway was prone to accidents and several would occur each year. The latest involved a bus heading towards Johor Baru and Singapore from Perak on Sunday which killed 10 people. Earlier this year, two separate accidents killed seven people along the stretch. A trader, known only as Chan, told the daily that nearby residents believed that the area was guided by the three Datok Kong before the highway was built. But no prayers were held to appease the deities when the highway was constructed. "We believe this had angered Datok Kong who will 'catch' some people every year," he said. He added that locals believe that the stretch is 'dirty' and would take extra precaution when driving. "According to some Malays, the area was previously a Malay cemetery and not enough prayers were held before construction work started," he said.
  16. I was watching the Channel 8 news, showing the predicaments of some old folks staying in 1-room HDB flats. I was shocked to hear that the HDB people have sealed (with cement) the ventilation holes of the units along the corridor. I used to stay in a 1-room HDB flat when I was a small kid. With the ventilation holes along the corridor, it was already very stuffy. I can't imagine having these ventilation holes completely sealed. When it rains, the windows in the unit need to be closed and there will be no ventilation. It is as good as staying in a store-room. The poor folks staying in the 1-room flat can't afford the additional electricity for fans, not to mention air-conditioner. The old folks had grouped together to petition for the removal of these cement seal. But the spokesman replied that they have decided to seal these ventilation holes because there have been one case of fire spread from one unit to the other, through these holes. Their petition was not accepted. Poor folks. I hope the person who insisted on this implementation could spend a night in these units to understand the predicaments faced.
  17. Abstract from CNA "On the same issue, opposition MP Chiam See Tong asked why tracker dogs were not used in the manhunt. Mr Wong replied that he is not an expert on tracker dogs and he could only inform the House based on what he has been told by the professionals. He said: "The moment the escape was discovered, the guards turned out and searched the area, with lots of people on the ground. I was advised by professionals that in those situations, no value would be added by tracker dogs. I was also told that tracker dogs were deployed in certain locations in the vicinity of the Whitley Road Detention Centre." However, Mr Wong added that he would pass Mr Chiam's views and knowledge about tracker dogs to the police and let them assess whether it would indeed be beneficial to use them in such situations." everybody knows that tracker dog capability and those "professionals" think no value added, are they buying mobile phone packages looking out for VAS (Value added service)? Despite the trainings these "professionals" underwent and the amount of tax payer money spent, these "professionals" ought to be fcuk by the tracker dogs, eat dog poo and clean kennels.
  18. Came across a online video post of how to disable TRC/VSC on the IS 250 using a series of pedal steps. But I was wondering why the heck people would want to do that? Certainly disabling traction and vehicle stability controls will help a car get out of deep snow, but I don't understand why people would want to disable this safety feature in normal driving. Anyone care to enlighten me?
  19. 1. I find that we've to be extra careful when driving in housing estates. Many old folks seem to have the mentality that all cars must give way to them regardless of traffic rules. Many just cross without looking left, right and behind them, so dangerous! 2. Sometimes, so afraid that we might knocked one of them down one of these days, especially at night where visibility is lower. I wonder what would happen to the driver if they knock down an old folk that crossed the road by ignoring traffic rules? 3. There are so many SUVs these days and some have zero or very low NCAP Pedestrian crash rating hence chances of their survival would be low in such accident. Regards,
  20. Saturday, 3rd March 2007, 12:00pm+ Yew Tee Close. Outside Yew Tee MRT. I dropped my wife off to do some errands near Yew Tee MRT. I waiting in my car parked along the road, Yew Tee Close. Caught up with some ZZZzzz. Was awakened by a knock sound on my car, then saw somebody walk close beside my car. He looked kind of suspicious, so I kept my eye on him. He proceeded to the next car infront of me, and tried to open the front driver door. Then to the next car and so on. At least 6-cars he tried to open the door. When he noticed me staring, he walked away. Few minutes later he came back round this time directly to a car which had just parked behind me. He went straight for the drivers door. But when I stepped out of my car, to confront him he briskly walked away into the pasar malam. I managed to whip out my camera phone and caught a picture of him walking away (sorry not very clear though). In my opinion (no racial descrimination intended) he look like a malay youth, about 170cm and 50+kgs, dressed in white polo t-shirt and blue jeans, wearing a pair of sun glass over his eyes and another pair of sunglasses around the next facing behind. Carrying a sling bag. P.S. how to post photo here. Thanks.
