  3. https://www.reuters.com/world/singer-tina-turner-dies-aged-83-2023-05-24/ 'Queen of rock 'n' roll' Tina Turner dies at 83 May 24 (Reuters) - Tina Turner, the American-born singer who left a hardscrabble farming community and abusive relationship to become one of the top recording artists of all time, died on Wednesday at the age of 83. She died peacefully after a long illness in her home in Küsnacht near Zurich, Switzerland, her representative said. Turner began her career in the 1950s during the early years of rock and roll and evolved into an MTV phenomenon. In the video for her chart-topping song "What's Love Got to Do with It," in which she called love a "second-hand emotion," Turner epitomized 1980s style as she strutted through New York City streets with her spiky blond hair, wearing a cropped jean jacket, mini skirt, and stiletto heels. With her taste for musical experimentation and bluntly-worded ballads, Turner gelled perfectly with a 1980s pop landscape in which music fans valued electronically-produced sounds and scorned hippie-era idealism. Sometimes nicknamed the "Queen of Rock 'n' Roll," Turner won six of her eight Grammy Awards in the 1980s. The decade saw her land a dozen songs on the Top 40, including "Typical Male," "The Best," "Private Dancer" and "Better Be Good to Me." Her 1988 show in Rio de Janeiro drew 180,000 people, which remains one of the largest concert audiences for any single performer. By then, Turner had been free from her marriage to guitarist Ike Turner for a decade. The superstar was forthcoming about the abuse she suffered from her former husband during their marital and musical partnership in the 1960s and 1970s. She described bruised eyes, busted lips, a broken jaw and other injuries that repeatedly sent her to the emergency room. "Tina's story is not one of victimhood but one of incredible triumph," singer Janet Jackson wrote about Turner, in a Rolling Stone issue that placed Turner at No. 63 on a list of the top 100 artists of all time. "She's transformed herself into an international sensation - an elegant powerhouse," Jackson said. In 1985, Turner gave a fictional turn to her reputation as a survivor. She played the ruthless leader of an outpost in a nuclear wasteland, acting opposite Mel Gibson in the third installment in the Mad Max franchise, "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome." Most of Turner's hit songs were written by others, but she enlivened them with a voice that New York Times music critic Jon Pareles called "one of the more peculiar instruments in pop." "It's three-tiered, with a nasal low register, a yowling, cutting middle range and a high register so startlingly clear it sounds like a falsetto," Pareles wrote in a 1987 concert review. Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones said he was saddened by Turner's death, calling her "enormously talented." "She was inspiring, warm, funny and generous," Jagger wrote on Twitter. "She helped me so much when I was young and I will never forget her." Canadian singer Bryan Adams, who paired with Turner on the 1985 single "It's Only Love," said "the world just lost one hell of a powerhouse of a woman." "Thank you for being the inspiration to millions of people around the world, for speaking your truth and giving us the gift of your voice," Adams said on Twitter. At the White House, spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre called Turner's death "a massive loss to the communities that loved her and certainly the music industry. Her music will continue to live on." 'ONE-HORSE TOWN' Turner was born Anna Mae Bullock on November 26, 1939, in the rural Tennessee community of Nutbush, which she described in her 1973 song "Nutbush City Limits" as a "quiet little old community, a one-horse town." Her father worked as an overseer on a farm and her mother left the family when the singer was 11 years old, according to the singer's 2018 memoir "My Love Story." As a teenager, she moved to St. Louis to rejoin her mom. Ike Turner, whose 1951 song "Rocket 88" has often been called the first rock and roll record, discovered her at age 17 when she grabbed the mic to sing at his club show in St. Louis in 1957. The band leader later recorded a hit song, "A Fool In Love," with his protégé and gave her the stage name Tina Turner, before the two married in Tijuana, Mexico. Tina employed her strong voice and strenuously rehearsed dance routines as lead vocalist in an ensemble called the Ike and Tina Turner Revue. She collaborated with members of rock royalty, including The Who and Phil Spector, in the 1960s and 1970s and appeared on the cover of issue two of Rolling Stone magazine in 1967. Ike and Tina Turner bounced between record labels, owing much of their commercial success to a relentless touring schedule. Their biggest hit was a cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Proud Mary." Turner left her husband one night in 1976 on a tour stop in Dallas, after he pummeled her during a car ride and she struck back, according to her memoir. Their divorce was finalized in 1978. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inducted Ike and Tina Turner in 1991, calling them "one of the most formidable live acts in history." Ike Turner died in 2007. EUROPE BOUND After leaving her husband, Turner spent years struggling to regain the limelight, releasing solo albums and singles that flopped and gigging at corporate conferences. In 1980, she met new manager Roger Davies, an Australian music executive who went on to manage her for three decades. That led to a solo no.1 - "What's Love Got to Do With It" - and then in 1984 her album "Private Dancer" landed her at the top of the charts. "Private Dancer" went on to become Turner's biggest album, the capstone of a career that saw her sell more than 200 million records in total. In 1985 Turner met German music executive Erwin Bach, who became her long-term partner, and in 1988 she moved to London, beginning a decades-long residency in Europe. She released two studio albums in the 1990s that sold well, especially in Europe, recorded the theme song for 1995 Bond movie "GoldenEye," and staged a successful world tour in 2008 and 2009. After that, she retired from show business. She married Bach, relinquishing her U.S. citizenship and becoming a citizen of Switzerland. She battled a number of health problems after retiring and in 2018 she faced a family tragedy, when her oldest son, Craig, took his life at age 59 in Los Angeles. Her younger son Ronnie died in December 2022. Her name continues to draw audiences years after her retirement. Musical stage show "TINA: The Tina Turner Musical," with Adrienne Warren initially acting and singing the star's life story, was a hit first in London's West End in 2018, and later on Broadway, and is still running. And in 2021 HBO released a documentary about her life, "Tina." She is survived by Bach and two sons of Ike's that she adopted. Reporting by Mike Davidson, Editing by Rosalba O'Brien
  4. A popular local Singer/Songwriter has taken to her facebook page to rant about cars making loud explosive noises where she lives. 1 bang 2.mp4 In her post, Beverly Morata Grafton pointed out in her post she has been experiencing "exhausts have been popping off like gunshots from 10:30pm and counting. And like every weekend since mid April, they will do so until 4am plus in the morning..." From her photos and videos that she provided, we gathered that these incidents happenen along Yishun Ave 1, where Sinopec Yishun is situated at. This stretch has a speed camera but car enthusiasts are known to still gun their cars there while heading towards the Yishun Dam. We will not go into the rest of her post as it can be a bit demeaning and vulgar. For those who are curious, you can view her post below. In the video that was taken on the 25th of April, we could identify a white Volkswagen Golf accelerating away quickly from the petrol station before letting off some loud bangs, much to the annoyance of the songwriter. Being a post on the writer's personal page, it was no surprise to find the comments supporting her views. But what do you guys think? More pops and bangs for everyone? Or should we cooperate for quieter neighbourhoods?

  7. Xinyao singer Dawn Gan dies at the age of 55 SINGAPORE - Xinyao singer Dawn Gan has died at the age of 55 after a battle with cancer. Gan was diagnosed with synovial sarcoma - a rare form of cancer which affects the soft tissue and usually occurs near the joints of the arm, neck or leg - in 2013. The following year, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. The singer revealed in 2016 that she had five operations to remove tumours and a part of her lung. Veteran xinyao singer and producer Billy Koh, in his 50s, confirmed the news of her death. “I was in the same class with Dawn Gan in Secondary Two at River Valley High School,” he told The Straits Times. “Dawn and I were xinyao pioneers in the early 80s,” he added. Xinyao is a genre of local Mandarin folk-pop music popular in the 1980s and 1990s. Xinyao concert organiser and founder of TCR Music Station Cai Yiren, 53, who has known Gan for over a decade, also said he heard about Gan's death from friends on Saturday (Sept 22). He had received text messages - some informing him of the death, others asking him if the news was true - but has yet to be in touch with Gan's family. Gan had been based in Hong Kong in recent years. She was married to a businessman, with whom she has three adult children. Mr Cai, who has been organising the annual Xinyao Reunion Concert series since 2008, said that he approached Gan to appear at this year's Xinyao 36 Reunion Concert but she declined for health reasons. This was the first time Gan had opted out of the concert, which she participated in despite her illness in previous years. Gan's xinyao hits include Water Tales and Your Reflection, and she won fans with her bright pipes and personality. She was also known for Youth 1 2 3, the theme song for the Channel 8 show Happy Trio (1986). Mr Cai said: "I invited her every year, this was the first year she could not come. She told us she had to rest." "She was a nice, cheerful, loving person. We've sung xinyao together for so many years, it's quite sad to receive this news," he said. Few of my favorite songs sung by her...
  8. The Cranberries lead singer Dolores O'Riordan has died suddenly at the age of 46, her publicist has confirmed. The Irish musician, originally from Limerick, led the band to international success in the 90s with singles including Linger and Zombie. A statement from her publicist said: "The lead singer with the Irish band The Cranberries was in London for a short recording session. "No further details are available at this time." A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said the police were called to a hotel in Park Lane at 09:05 GMT on Monday, where "a woman in her mid-40s" was pronounced dead at the scene. The death is, at this stage, unexplained. Her current band mates in The Cranberries - Noel Hogan, Fergal Lawler, and Mike Hogan - paid tribute to the lead singer on social media. The message said: "She was an extraordinary talent and we feel very privileged to been part of her life from 1989." Her publicist added: "Family members are devastated to hear the news and have requested privacy at this very difficult time." The Cranberries shot to international fame with their 1993 debut album Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We? and went on to sell over 40 million records worldwide. In 2017 The Cranberries announced a tour including dates in Europe, the UK, and the US. However, in May - shortly into the European tour - the group had to cancel the remainder of the European dates as a result of O'Riordan's health issues. The official Cranberries website cited "medical reasons associated with a back problem" preventing singer Dolores O'Riordan from performing. But just before Christmas O'Riordan had posted on Facebook saying she was "feeling good" and had done her "first bit of gigging in months", leading fans to believe she would soon be performing again. O'Riordan tweeted a picture of herself with her cat to fans in early January saying she was "off to Ireland". O'Riordan split from her husband of 20 years, Don Burton in 2014. She and Burton, who is the former tour manager of Duran Duran, have three children together. The singer was arrested over an alleged air rage incident in 2014 but was released without charge, after a stewardess was reportedly attacked on a flight from New York to Shannon, County Clare. O'Riordan was taken to hospital in Limerick after being questioned by police and later discharged. Two years later, O'Riordan was ordered to pay 6,000 euros (£5,300) to charity for headbutting a police officer after an alleged air rage incident. She was later diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2015, which she said explained why she was in a "manic" state on the plane. In an interview in 2013 she said that she had been abused as a child, which led to her developing an eating disorder, and eventually she suffered a breakdown. She described her family, especially her children, as her "salvation". Irish president Michael D Higgins called her death "a big loss", and added O'Riordan's work with The Cranberries "had an immense influence on rock and pop music in Ireland and internationally". Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Leo Varadkar said she was probably "Limerick's greatest ever rock star", and that her band "captured all of the angst that came with your teenage years". 'Unforgettable voice' The Kinks guitarist and singer Dave Davies paid tribute to O'Riordan, saying he was "shocked" and that he had seen her "a couple weeks before Christmas". He added "she seemed happy and well". A book of condolence will be opened in her home town of Limerick on Tuesday, at the city council's headquarters. O'Riordan, the youngest of seven children, had written her own songs since she was 12. She joined the band while still in her teens, after spotting an advert for a female singer for rock band The Cranberry Saw Us. Later changed to The Cranberries, the band's most successful tracks include Linger (1993), Zombie (1994) - a protest song about bombings that took place in relation to the conflict in Northern Ireland - as well as No Need To Argue (1994) and To the Faithful Departed (1996). O'Riordan briefly pursued a solo career after the band split in 2003, before The Cranberries reunited in 2009.

Sharing for a good laugh, watch the clip, it's hilarious! :) http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/singaporeseen/this-urban-jungle/stagehand-accidentally-hits-getai-singer-with-pole-with-hilarious-results Stagehand accidentally hits getai singer with pole -- with hilarious results Posted on 07 September 2014 | 18,728 views | 8 comments A getai singer had an embarrassing moment after a stagehand accidentally hit her with a pole. A video of the incident went viral on facebook recently. The stagehand was dismantling a pole on stage, while the singer was performing in front of her. However, as she tilted the pole sideways, it slid between the legs of the singer. As the stagehand raised the pole, it ended up hitting the singer in the pelvic area. This caused her to hit some really awkward high notes, leading to hilarity. Both she and the stagehand took the incident in a light-hearted manner, thankfully. It is unclear where the incident took place in.

  16. A Turkish singer just set a land speed record, making him the fastest man on the planet when his Ferrari F430 averaged 182 miles per hour during a record run down a runway at an airport in eastern Turkey. Now, if 182 mph doesn't sound fast enough to set a world land speed record, know that the driver was blind... and alone in the car. Metin Senturk became the fastest blind man driving solo with his Guinness-verified speed of 292.89 kilometers per hour (182 mph). Senturk was followed down the runway by his driving coach, former rally driver Volkan Isik, who relayed instructions to Senturk via radio. The driver is a pop singer in Turkey who has been blind since the age of three. He said that the record run, "was really hard, like a dance with death." When Senturk emerged from his borrowed car, he was told by the Guinness people that he had bested the old record of 284 kph, held by a British bank manager. In case you were wondering, this unaccompanied record is about 20 mph slower than the record set by Hein Wagner of South Africe, who had his coach riding shotgun when he drove a Mercedes-Benz SL65 Black Series to a tick over 200 mph last October.
