YANGON: A Dutch tourist has been detained in Myanmar for insulting religion after being accused of pulling the plug on a speaker relaying a late-night Buddhist sermon in Mandalay. Klass Haytema, 30, has been held since Friday (Sep 23) night when he allegedly disconnected the cable linking an amplifier and a speaker at a hall playing the sermon after he complained that it was disturbing him, police said. "The religious hall is not far from the hotel where he was staying... he said he did it because it was too noisy for him," Kyi Soe, police chief at Maha Aung Myay township, told AFP. An angry crowd followed the man back to his hotel, where he was taken into custody by police and later transferred to a Mandalay prison. "We detained him for insulting religion," he said, adding it was under section 295 of Myanmar's penal code. He is yet to be charged but the law carries up to a two year jail term and fine. Buddhist-majority Myanmar is deeply devout and several foreigners have been found guilty of insulting religion. In July a Spanish tourist was deported from Myanmar after monks complained about a tattoo of Buddha he had on his leg. Last year a New Zealand bar manager spent 10 months in jail for "insulting religion" by using a Buddha image to promote a cheap drinks night. I guess I am not the only frustrated owner to be waiting for LTA to approve VICOM and then VITAS. LTA says takes about a month to 2 before a Cat B car can be released... urm yes, a Cat B car and NOT a Cat A car so no issue of turbo or not... The purpose of this thread is to seek clarity on the process and procedures before the car can be released to the owner. There is no transparency from the authorities. Don't understand why one car has to go through 2 inspections and of different sorts to waste everyone's time. Couldn't this be done all at one queue and one visit? How many weeks to get an appointment to clear VICOM? 1 - 2 months. How many weeks to get another appointment to clear VITAS? 1 - 2 weeks. VICOM is causing the queue... true? VITAS can just queue on the spot and get cleared within a day while LTA takes an other week or 2 to issue the certificate... true? What do the check at VICOM or VITAS? The above all based on hear say... like i said, always hearing different things from people. Would appreciate feedback from folks who understand the system and clear serious doubts... -
The driver of a white lorry, Mr Ramli Akbar, was arrested after his vehicle swerved across four lanes on Sembawang Road before hitting a tree, tipping over and crashing into an Audi sedan on Monday night. A pill found on the driver has been sent to the Central Narcotics Bureau for testing. A lorry driver who had been taking shipyard workers home was arrested after losing control of his vehicle and swerving across four lanes into a tree. The lorry, with three Indian workers in the back and three locals in the front, ran into the kerb at a junction before careering across Sembawang Road into the tree and tipping over onto its side. It skidded for about 3m before crashing into a white Audi sedan parked in front of a seafood restaurant. One Indian worker, Mr Chala Kannan, in his 30s, was taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. He later regained consciousness and was being treated for a broken finger yesterday. The other workers escaped with superficial injuries. It is better to be driven to drink than to be driven to jail. This is one of this year's anti-drink driving messages. The annual campaign was kicked off today, with Singapore Press Holdings' ST Cars as title sponsor for the first time. The revamped portal, a buy-sell-rent platform for motorists and dealers, was launched today. At the campaign launch at Pan Pacific Hotel this evening, Second Minister for Home Affairs S. Iswaran shared that 2,141 motorists were arrested this year for drink driving between January and September this year, an increase from 2,056 in the same period last year. Hi all, i may have kena "photoshot" by a hand-held speed camera used by a plain clothes guy in white standing on the overhead bridge. Was along queensway near the macdonald there, i think speed limit was 70 but was travelling at 80+, 90, rushing for appt 1st time i saw a hand held camera without tripod. has anyone seen such a speed camera b4 and kena also? pls share. So far i've only seen mobile speed cameras that are quite large mounted on tripod. this one was only as big as a hand held video cam. -
Bros! Tp with hand hell unit at road shoulder just before the CCK overhead bridge at 1030am 27/10/2010 on kje!!! Anyway was travelling at 100+ ..he was hiding just afer the turn ..handheld unit is it nv chase u that means never kenna? Or is it same as those tripod unit send letter to ur hse?

Sat, May 08, 2010 AFP BUCHAREST, Romania - A Romanian diplomat involved in a fatal hit-and-run case in Singapore was detained for questioning on Friday, Romanian prosecutors said. Silviu Ionescu, who was Bucharest's charge d'affaires in Singapore at the time, is alleged to have hit three pedestrians in two incidents in December while driving a car belonging to the Romanian mission. One of the victims, a 30-year-old Malaysian national, suffered brain damage and died on Christmas Day, while the two others suffered injuries. The diplomat, who flew back to Romania days after the accident, "has tried to influence witnesses' depositions and asked an employee to erase data in his computer," prosecutors said. Ionescu was taken in for questioning for six hours on Friday by prosecutors who are seeking a 29-day detention warrant against him. Judges have 24 hours to approve the diplomat's detention or release him. Ionescu has publicly denied he was the driver, claiming the car was stolen. In interviews to Romanian media, he alleged he was "a victim of a conspiracy by Singapore authorities." Last month, Singapore issued an arrest warrant after a coroner's court ruled that Ionescu was driving the car involved in the accident. Singapore's foreign ministry said the Romanian government had the moral obligation to persuade Ionescu to return to face the charges. There is no extradition treaty between the two countries. "The Romanian government must in its own interests ensure that justice was served and seen to be served," a spokesman said in a statement. "Otherwise, there would inevitably be consequences for bilateral relations."

VIP room come with pool table, ps3, pc w internet, etc anyone held any event there? any feedback about the facilities & services? how much spent for crowd of approx 50pax? any better cheaper alternatives/lobangs to recommend? guests are mixture of guys & gals so no a-hem KTV. lolz. A person of high office like a minister of a country has to be of exceptional character. Falling to temptations will jeopardise the country as state secrets can be easily passed over to an unscrupulous person or even a spy. This guy has a character flaw, so he can't hold high office. Read in today ST in regards to 3 men being charged in court and sentenced for dealing with countraband cigarettes smuggled into Singapore. The smuggled cigarettes were found inside 33 coffins. A total of 3,719 cartons were seized with a street value of $334,791/-. What will these peoples think of next , inorder to bring in the countrabrand cigarettes into SG.

TWO police cars had to abandon a 200km car chase because one had a defective siren and the other's radiator hose blew, while a police helicopter crew lacked the necessary maps for the chase. Two teenagers are being questioned after the high-speed car chase from Sydney's west to Mudgee. It began when police tried to stop a Subaru WRX at St Marys about 8.30pm (AEST) yesterday, police said today. They chased the car to the Bells Line of Road. The Subaru avoided road spikes put down by police at the weighbridge at Bell in the Blue Mountains, and Lithgow Police took over the pursuit. The chase continued through Lithgow to Mudgee, down the Castlereagh Highway, where police stopped the chase for safety reasons after the Subaru turned onto a dirt track. Lithgow Police today arrested two male teenagers at about 5.10am after a Lithgow service station worker became suspicious of a vehicle and its occupants. The teens were being interviewed by police. Chifley Local Area Command Superintendent Martin Wookey said the two police cars had to pull out of the chase because one had a defective siren and the other's radiator hose blew. "That's what happens," he said. "We (NSW Police) have a fleet of I think 14,000 and the cars are new and well maintained, but sometimes there are faults." The Polair police helicopter tracking the offenders also had to pull out of the chase because of the terrain and rising fog, he said. The crew did not have maps of the area. "It (Polair) took off from its base on another job then they were advised about the pursuit," Supt Wookey said. "They can't carry every map because the helicopter wouldn't be able to take off so they only take the ones they need. "In this instance they were coming from another job and didn't have the right maps with them." Supt Wookey said Polair had tracked the Subaru with spotlights and thermal tracking. "With a pursuit over two hours over 200km and no injuries or damage to property, I am very proud of them (officers)," he said.
