Malaysian PM Mahathir proposes new regional currency based on gold TOKYO: Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on Thursday (May 30) proposed to create a new “special currency” for the region based on gold, replacing the existing currency trading regime. Speaking at a dialogue session at the 25th International Conference on The Future of Asia (Nikkei Conference), he claimed that a regional currency based on gold would be more stable. The prime minister said that by pegging the new currency to gold, it could be used to evaluate the import and export activities among East Asian countries. “We can make settlement using that (new) currency. That currency must be pegged to the local currency as the exchange rate, which is something that can be related to the country’s performance,” he said. “That way we know how much we owe, how much we have to pay in the special currency of East Asia." The new currency could also be extended to countries outside East Asia, he said. Dr Mahathir noted that the global market is now tied to the US dollar, and this makes the currency prone to manipulation. “Just because that one country is affected, there is infection to the other countries. Malaysia was very stable way back in 1997 (during the Asian financial crisis) ... but because of the problem occurring in Thailand, they said we must peg the Malaysian currency (to the US dollar),” he recounted. “What happened? The currency traders sold the Malaysian currency and the value of Malaysian currency depreciated.” “This currency trading is not something that is healthy because it is not about the (economic) performance of countries but it is about manipulation.” When asked if the Japanese yen or Chinese yuan could be used as the common currency in the region, the prime minister replied: “If we are trying to promote our own currency, there will be conflict." “But if we have a common currency for East Asia, a common trading currency that is not used in each country but for the purpose of settlement trade only, then there will be stability,” he said. “Trying to promote the yen or the yuan is not the way to go.” US SHOULD STOP LABELLING OTHER COUNTRIES: MAHATHIR Earlier this week, the United States added Malaysia to a watchlist of trading partners for currency practices, citing its foreign exchange intervention operations. Malaysia’s central bank has refuted the claim. In a statement on Wednesday, it said the Malaysian economy remains resilient, underpinned by strong economic fundamentals, including the flexibility accorded by a floating exchange rate and strong external balance. "Malaysia supports free and fair trade, and does not practise unfair currency practices," it said. Other countries, including Singapore, China, Germany, Japan, South Korea and Vietnam were also added to the list. On Thursday, Dr Mahathir hit out at the US for “labelling countries”. “The US is fond of labelling that country is no good, this country is no good and telling countries on ways to conduct their business,” he said. “You are not democratic. That is not for any single power to decide. If you want to live in a united world, stable world, we must resort to sustainability through agreement between all nations that have a stake in that problem." Every time I see a specialist I always wonder, do the doctor really want to make me healthy or does he just want to operate on me.... what’s in it for him to keep me healthier as that means I don’t need him and he will be out of work. He needs to pay for all the expensive overheads, u can’t blame him for trying to sell expensive ops. The current volume based healthcare is so fundamentally wrong.

Tests are still ongoing to make sure that the system is technically feasible and reliable in a built-up city like Singapore, she said. And if the system is technically feasible, it is still "some years" before the system is ready to be launched and implemented, Mrs Teo added. Satellite signals may bounce off tall buildings in built-up areas like Singapore, resulting in patchy accuracy, earlier reports said. When the technology is proven, the Government will then study how to use the new system to influence motorists' usage of vehicles. A tender for the project was awarded to four parties last year to conduct a system evaluation test for the next-generation ERP system. According to The Straits Times, the four are Kapsch TrafficCom; MHI Engine System Asia & NCS; ST Electronics (Info-Comm Systems) & IBM Singapore; and Watchdata Technologies & Beijing Watchdata System. Each party will receive $1 million in seed funding "to design, develop and demonstrate technological solutions". A new Carbon Emissions-Based Vehicle Scheme (CEVS) will apply to all new cars, taxis and newly imported used cars with effect from Jan 1, 2013, the Land Transport Authority said on Wednesday. This followed announcements made by Minister for Transport Lui Tuck Yew in Parliament. Under CEVS, all new cars and imported used cars with low carbon emissions of less than or equal to 160g carbon emissions per kilometre (CO2/km) will qualify for significant rebates of between $5,000 and $20,000, which will be given as an offset against the vehicle's Additional Registration Fee (ARF) payable. Cars with high carbon emissions equal to or more than 211g CO2/km will incur a corresponding registration surcharge between $5,000 and $20,000. The CO2/km performance data for each car model will be provided on mandatory information labels at car showrooms. The Chemlube brochure claims that Chemlube synthetic motor oil uses organic ester which is more expensive at US$3.20 / kg compared to hydrocarbon (PAO) used by other synthetic oils, which costs only US$2.10 / kg. How is Chemlube's organix ester, costing 50% more than conventional hycarbon more effective in protecting the engine? Perhaps, Genie, oue MCF in-house oil expert could shed some light on this?

LTA evaluating proposals for satellite-based ERP

Ideas for a satellite-based electronic road pricing system are being evaluated by the Land Transport Authority (LTA). Four consortiums submitted proposals after testing various technological solutions between June 2011 and December last year. The next-generation ERP, which Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew said is likely to be feasible but still several years away, could charge motorists based on how far they travel on congested roads. A spokesman for the authority said ideas submitted by the consortiums could form the base for developing the system. He added: "We will still need some time to review and evaluate the performance of the proposals... before we can make a final decision on the way forward." We are happy that Ms Chin has made a recovery. However, we are not able to comment on the case as we do not have access to specific information on her medical treatment in Hong Kong and what exactly was diagnosed and communicated to her family. Brain death is diagnosed only when there is catastrophic brain injury. When brain death has occurred, blood flow and oxygen delivery to the brain ceases irreversibly and all brain functions are lost and will never return again. Brain death is determined according to strict clinical criteria. Once diagnosed, it is recognised both medically and legally in Singapore as death of the person. This definition is similar to those used in countries such as Australia, Canada, Denmark, Britain and the United States. Brain death implies the irreversible cessation of consciousness, loss of capacity to breathe and other brain stem functions, and is accepted as the termination of a human's life; correspondingly, the diagnosis of brain death is very important. The neurological criteria for diagnosing brain death in Singapore are based on current best medical evidence and knowledge, and are similar to those adopted by countries such as the US, Australia, and Britain. In Singapore, all criteria have to be fully met for the diagnosis of brain death, including absence of pupillary response to light, absence of corneal reflex and absence of respiratory drive or spontaneous breathing, to cite a few; and when one or more of these tests cannot be done, additional tests to demonstrate the absence of brain circulation need to be performed. In addition, two doctors are required to certify brain death, at least one of whom has to be independent and not involved in the care of the patient. Doctors accredited to perform brain-death certification in our hospitals are specialists who have had appropriate training to certify brain death. We would like to reassure the public of the highest standard of medical practice in our hospitals, and that correctly diagnosed brain death is not a reversible medical condition. The Government will soon announce a new emissions-based vehicle tax system. It is expected to replace the decade-old green vehicle rebate scheme, which expires at the end of the year. But more than just handing out tax rebates to buyers of environmentally friendlier cars, the new scheme will take a carrot-and-stick approach. Buyers of fuel-efficient new cars stand to enjoy rebates of up to $15,000, which they can use to offset their vehicles' Additional Registration Fee (ARF), the main car tax here. Singapore is moving a step closer to a satellite-based Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) system, with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) seeking a contractor to provide vehicles to test technologies developed by four parties. An LTA spokesman said the on-road tests are part of a system evaluation trial for a next-generation ERP system. The on-road tests will begin in July and run until end-November, with an option for a three-month extension. Anyone knows the formula to use when calculating FC based on the weight and CC of a particular model? I would like to compare the FC of conti and Korea cars's weight as both of them are on the high side. This should be more fair and accurate to calculate the FC...any ideas?

Recently, i was conned into doing up my wifes car in water based paint rather than the time proven regular German or european paint job. I took my car down to a so called reputable shop in the area of Thomson to get my Bodykit and a so called professional paint job done. This is was the start of my problems... The Body kit given to my 1 year old continental car was actually an FRP --that means fibre glass content, the price was ridiculously high, although , i was stupid enough to believe the nice talking SE...without even any credentials ,to entrust my car with them....as they carry a lot of high end brands. The fittings of the work was bad and the paint work shoddy!!! I should have sent my car to those recommended in the internet here!!! I resend my car back to do up at least 7 times ....and the so called manager of the so - called high -tech reputable company can only say that it was state of the art, thus require more time! More time!!! Hows this for more time?? A panel or 2 to be redone requires another 5 days of down time!! Whats more, the finishing under scrutiny with my untrained eye showed UNEVENESS in the colour and last of all SWIRL marks which was still there..... WTF!!!! The entire car was done in a "record" time of almost one month!! Not that it wasn't my fault in the first place....should have gone back to the one in Eunos to redo, now on hindsight against my better judgement!! Thats it for me ---water based crap paint... I wont even recommend them to my friends!! Now my paint job is still BLURRY ! and the shine is Crap!!! After checking up the info by the net ,,,water based paints are only used cause there will be less lead or toxins released to the atmosphere ,,so the Earth will be greener. SO WHAT!!! My car still is crappy and i should have stuck to the regular European time proven ones!! Sheeezzesh!!!! Any one here has the same BAD experience or is it only me??

REPRESENTATION BASED ON OCCUPATION INSTEAD OF LOCALITY I suggest a system of electing representatives to look after the interests of the different major occupation groups instead of a given locality. This can be based on the Singapore Standard Occupation Classification. The number of seats will be determined by the quantity of the citizens that fall within a given classification. Members of Parliament should serve a legislative function instead of focusing on administrative functions in estate management. We have the Town Council and Mayors for that purpose. The MPs are elected to act in the best interest of their voters, to introduce and debate on bills which may eventually pass to become law. They should not be allowed to find themselves trapped in a situation where estate upgrading and maintenance gets intermingled with political representation. By representing a constituency defined in a geographical area, conflicts of interest are undoubtedly experienced by the unfortunate representative. Should I vote in favor of the bill that benefits the blue collar or the white? Propose a consumption tax, or a luxury tax to boost the national coffers? It also gives rise to a situation where the upper class congregates in a locality as seen in our real estate classification. While concerning ourselves with preventing racial divide, we should not overlook the even more important social division that slowly tears away at the fabric of our society. Hii, Out of curiosity, can anybody here enlighten me on tis? Looking @ COE figures for motorcars is about 80% of the car price, juz wondering wat is motorbike's COE based on. Was thinking its only a small fraction of the bike's price, y izzit not also about 80% of bike's price.

The question is Are you paying for the distance between your start and end destination or the distance of the route? For example only Woodlands to Changi Airport a)Assume distance between the two places is 10 km. b)If I take bus 858 (direct route by TPE) distance is about 12 km by road. c)If I take MRT, distance is 20 km since transfer at city hall. So by distance based fare, do I pay for the distance between the two destinations a) or do I pay for the distance travelled b) and c) Cos if a) then definitely save money. If b) and c) then potentially spend more because sometimes, indirect route might be faster or offer more opportunities to rest. The if u throw in feeder and the feeder goes a roundabout route to ur place, u spend more also because the fare is on distance travelled and not the physical distance between your bus stop and the terminal. Can anyone educate me on how distance fare works?

New information has emerged further clarifying the supposed Mercedes B-Class AMG we reported yesterday. According to Autocar it will actually be a four-door coupe based on the B-Class platform - not an AMG powered five-door compact MPV. Inspired by the F800 concept, which recently debuted at that Geneva Motor Show, the car (reportedly codenamed C117 EVO) will likely measure less than 4500mm (177 inches) in length. As a modern day successor to the 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II, it will feature bold styling and a luxurious interior. Power will be provided by a supercharged 3.2-liter V6 with approximately 400 bhp (298 kW / 406 PS). Based on the turbocharged 3.5-liter V6, which will be introduced on the new CLS 350, the engine will feature a smaller displacement and an electrically-operated pressure wave supercharger. Despite riding on the front-wheel drive MFA platform, which will also be used in the next generation A-Class, the four-door AMG will likely offer all-wheel drive with a rear-biased setup. While nothing is official, a possible launch is slated for 2012 or 2013. -

Noting that the adjustment had been delayed once, in 2008, Rear-Admiral (NS) Lui said: 'The problem is the longer you defer it, the larger the increase will be in the property taxes if HDB prices continues to go up.' So will the property tax be lowered if the home price drops??? seems that Govt wants to take money from peasant first...how abt introducing further pay cut to all ministers inorder to forecast high inflation....

Bought a new ride not long ago and since I drive very rarely, it took longer than usual to hit the next servicing mileage. Now authorized dealer refuse to give me the free servicing claiming that I have exceeded the time limit. So in other words, if I drive only 500km and I hit the time limit, I must go service? That doesn;t make any sense to me. Anybody encountered this problem before? What should I tell the AD?
