  1. I have been buying on and off local car magazine for more than 20 years and finally thinking of subscribing to Torque because their Sep issue this year promise that they would be very differnt and bigger and better there is something glaring is unlike their foreign counter part, their reports by resident writer including Dr. Winston Lee, Dr. Andre Lam and Mr. Christopher are often personal taste and opinion. Infact, once I took the magazine along to see a new car that they had reported on which I would it contradictory because the car actually fits my taste. So, in short, do you guys think it worth reading our local car magazine or should I go ahead and subscribe. thanks

  4. In the early 1990s when I became a young automobile fan, my only source of automotive information was 'Motoring' magazine as I was a subscriber. It's recent demise was quite sad but not unexpected. The number of motoring publications in the Singapore market has been increasing over the past few years and perhaps one of the great threats to their survival is free publications. 'CarBuyer' has been distributed freely via petrol stations for a few years now, recently joined by another complimentary publication. Like paid publications, they offered reviews on new models, comparison between models, interviews and analysis on hot issues such as COE. Although they are free, the print quality and paper quality is pretty good. I believe these free publications earn their revenue mainly through advertisements. Currently, I do not buy printed publications as often as before. I obtain the latest news of the automotive world from the internet, and this news is hot from the oven. However, when it comes to car reviews and comparison studies, I still enjoy reading hardcopy as I prefer to flip the pages rather than scrolling down the page using the mouse. To satisfy such needs, publications such as 'CarBuyer' are serving me well.

  7. Yesterday I received the following message through email: Dear Valued Subscriber, It was indeed a pleasure to have worked with you on the above mentioned title. Since its inception, the title has garnered its share of readers in this highly competitive market and you have helped in making this possible. However, taking a long term business view, the management has made a decision and the publication of Motoring will be discontinued. The last issue will be the Jun 2011 edition. Indeed very sad for a long history Singapore Car magazine was discontinued.
  8. Anyone bought a copy or flipped though it? saw it at petrol kiosk last night but all wrapped up and @$13 a pop, not gonna buy it till i get to see what's inside. Same $$$ buys me foreign tuner mags like Fast Car / Super Street (and previously Max Power) dun wanna end up with a mag. full of crappy local classified ads selling broquet and fuel magnets i'd buy it if its a direct translated version of the JDM magazine
  9. i don't intend to be a troll, i wish this to be a constructive discussion. i'm also not involved in auto magazine publications in any way. but i read them on a regular basis, and i find a local one with initial W to be utterly shameless. all use press photos, compile into a review without even driving the car. and then sell for $4 for so many years. this forum easily has more originality and value than the magazine. if you got no pride, why start a magazine?
  10. I am looking into the possibility of starting up a simple magazine which focuses on lifestyle issues. Can anyone help me with estimating how much publication costs will be like? Like the paper costs, publishing, contrats, etc....? Or is there anywhere I can read up online about local costs and start ups? Thanks.
  11. Does anyone here subscribe to car magazine? What will be the main factor that will make you subscribe to a year of magazine. Please do let me have your feedback as I am trying to do a market research now for this topic. Thanks
  12. Woo hoo!!! this is a hip hip hooray for the local Honda scene and all 3 cars are from MyCarForum! For 3 local cars to be featured in an Ang Mo Magazine! With number plates in FULL glory!! For the benefit of those forum members that have not heard of NH-0, we are a small bo liao group, slacking at a kopithiam after a 5 hour car wash session and we noticed that our rides are all the same colour! Thus NH-0 was borned with 3 cups of home made ice lemon tea, swearing that we will keep our cars clean and tidy for as long as they live. Haha.. Here are the pics. The last time MCF PHOTOSHOOT, the FD2R number plate was exposed and posted online and it came out in 4D! Now got 3 numbers for MCFers to buy! Win liao must treat Kopi horr!

  16. 1. Instead of saying so much about how local car magazines CMI, why not we put into action and tell them what should a more meaningful test review be? 2. I've the following suggestions (not in order of importance): a) Spaciousness You often see magazines mentioned how spaciousness the car is, but there is no benchmark nor somethings that they measured against with. They should have something to tell us how spacious is the cabin rather than based on technical specifications, for example: b) Fuel economy Instead of relying on manufacturers' data, they should be doing their own tests instead, for example: c) For road performance, again, instead of relying on manufacturers' data, do a 0-100km, 100-400km and etc. Run a few rounds and get an average result. d) For interior, Please take more photos rather than write more words. Meanhwile, try to compare the differences between new model with the ex-model. Don't talk about climate control like a big in-thing. e) Handling, Work harder and don't be lazy, go find a better place to do handling tests. Not just around a corner in an open space car park. Mention why a particular road or area is chosen for the test, explain what they want to achieve from the test. Testing rpm should be mentioned too. f) Pricing When a writer says a car is expensive, please mention why? are OMV, COE and etc included in the formula? g) NVM Go and invest in a NVM tester. Instead of saying how quiet a car is, use the tester to measure before pick-up, after pick-up, initial 60km/h and the next 100Km/h. h) Street Survey No harm taking a few comments from street survey or in the car showroom or expo. People may have different views and perception. Again be very clear what you want to ask them. 3. Please feel free to comment and add. Thank you very much. Regards,
