  1. SINGAPORE: Commuters may soon be required to put their belongings through an X-ray scanner and walk through a metal detector before entering fare gates at MRT stations. This is part of enhanced security screening being tested at several stations, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said on Monday (Nov 5). The trial will begin on Nov 12. LTA said the data from the trial will enable it to "streamline and optimise its security screening processes, and reduce the future impact on daily rail operations". "We will also collect feedback from commuters and public transport operators to improve the effectiveness of future security operations and emergency exercises." LTA chief executive Ngien Hoon Ping said the authority will continue to enhance its security measures to ensure that the transport system remained safe and secure for all commuters. "By the end of this year, public transport operators will also progressively introduce the use of handheld metal detectors in their security checks at bus interchanges and MRT stations," he added https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/commuters-to-undergo-security-screening-at-mrt-stations-as-part-10898938

  3. So now Shell going to divorce with 7-11, is the "select" we see their own retail mama shop? seen this "select" quite some times liao. http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/transport/shell-to-end-partnership-with-7-eleven-chain Shell to end partnership with 7-Eleven chain FACEBOOK334TWITTEREMA Oil giant Shell will end its 11-year-old partnership with convenience store chain 7-Eleven this year, as it looks to rebrand its petrol stations to be in line with its "long-term business strategy". Shell Singapore retail general manager Aarti Nagarajan said the move started with the launch of its Tampines Avenue 2 station in June, adding that a "national revamp will take place gradually in phases with the introduction of Shell Select and Deli by Shell". This will effectively end Shell's venture with 7-Eleven. In 2006, Shell engaged the 24-hour chain to run its network of petrol stations here, saying the move would allow it to focus on more profitable activities. The Straits Times understands, however, that the exercise has met with mixed results - unlike a similar arrangement between rival ExxonMobil and NTUC FairPrice. Shell currently has 57 stations, down from 68 some 10 years ago, and as many as 74 in 2003. The drop is on the back of an industry-wide shrinkage, with the total number of stations falling from 222 in 2003 to around 170 today. Several sites had been assigned by the Government for other uses when their leases expired. Others were deemed security risks as they were too near high-rise residential or commercial developments. Ms Nagarajan, meanwhile, has dismissed market talk of Shell selling or leasing some of its stations to Chinese oil giant Sinopec as just that, talk. She described comments to that effect as "speculative" and "not been verified". Shell was responding to a Sunday Times report that Sinopec was entering the petrol station business here, and had secured two sites. In it, an industry source had said: "There's no economic sense having just one or two stations. Word in the market is that Shell may release 10 to 15 stations to them. Lease or sell, we do not know." Ms Nagarajan added: "We are committed to invest and grow our retail business in Singapore, which remains a strategic country for Shell."

The rest of the 25 MRT stations will get the free Wireless@SG connection over the next 9 months. The trial is implemented as part of the Land Transport Master Plan initiatives to provide better service on the public transport network........................ will we start to see students with laptop camping at the powerpoints? or cheepo nanas standing there for an hour to fully charge up their devices? hope this "solution" will not cause trouble. may users be "auto" abit and not hog the plugs!

  7. The ''traffic light'' signal at Tanjong Pagar MRT station showing an amber light. This means commuters have to wait for approximately two trains to pass before they can board. Commuters have given the green light to a new system which tells them how crowded the platforms are at MRT stations. "Traffic lights" are in place at the entrances of Tanjong Pagar and Ang Mo Kio stations in a trial which began last December. Passengers The Straits Times spoke to yesterday at lunchtime liked them so much that they want them rolled out at other stations. If the lights are green, it means the platform is clear and commuters can catch the next train. Amber means a wait for approximately two trains to pass before they can board, while red indicates a crowded platform and "prolonged waiting time". 10. I notice in JB, some petrol stations' pump attendants will collect cash directly from me. How safe is this? Would the attendants claim I did not pay and drove off. Catch me the next time I pump there again? Anyone pays to the pump attendants? All pump station got cameras?
  11. Oil giant Shell will stop displaying pump prices at petrol station entrances, ending its seven-year solo campaign to raise price transparency in the industry. It has started removing price boards across its network of about 60 stations. This means motorists will find out about fuel-price changes only when they drive up to a pump island, or if they trawl the various oil companies' websites. The oil majors used to make it a practice to inform the public of price changes via the media. Source: http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking%2BNew...ory_815531.html
  12. These foreign workers really pai tan... :o They really deserve every single cent they are paid & much more for taking on this type of high-risk jobs. From the photo, there were no lifeline nor safety harness for them who were all working at height on a slippery facade and faced unpredictable deluge of heavy rain. Effectively both their work condition and position controvened the Workplace Safety and Health Act (WSHA). From STOMP: http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg...up_falling.html Posted on 03 Feb 2012 One false step, and these workers could fall off wet ledge at Changi Airport STOMPer Hoe spotted these foreign workers on a narrow ledge some 10m above the ground at Changi Airport, following a rainy spell. He wrote: "This group of foreign workers were seen working dangerously on a ledge at Changi Airport. "The ledge was wet after rain and was at least 10m high. "Aren't these workers covered under the Workplace Safety Act too? "Who would answer if they were to fall?"
  13. Discussion / Debate... Have service standards at petrol stations declined? 1. Windshields are not cleaned. Attendants pretend not to ask, only clean when asked upon. 2. More interested in selling their OFFERS at the cashiers. 3. Never ask if fluids need to be filled up. 4. Tyre Air Pump broken down for days at same station 5. Etc, Etc.... All these despite their fat profits!!! But there are still service oriented stations, just very few...
  14. On my way back from the Johor P Outlet this afternoon, tried to pak-U at petronas and esson just before 2nd link.... no more petrol!!! Does this happen very often? (my first time in past 10 yrs of MY pak-U!!)
  15. Dear folks, I am trying to find a list of free papers that are distributed at petrol stations through the Internet but couldn't find any meaningful results. Hence, I would like to seek your help to list all the names (I.e. ------) that you have come across. I think they should have PDF copies circulating on their websites. TIA.
  16. I just came back and feel very uneasy. This year is different... All the polling stations are smaller and each box is divided into A1, A2, A3, etc... It seems the division of each ballot box is down to like block or even street level.. At the precint level, its already clustered into a very small group of a few blocks. now its even worse, feels like a few blocks are almost divided in block by block.. anyone notice how different the polling process is now more distributed and divided?
  17. I just wonder if SG MRT stations are haunted or something. We need to build doors in order to prevent people from falling onto the tracks... By contrast, the wrold biggest New York Subway (by number of stations) don't even have any doors for their platforms. Furthermore, you can see their yellow line is right the width of 2 tiles right the at edge. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:De..._Shankbone.jpg So something wrong with the design of ours stations or something wrong with our people or what? Maybe people cannot see the yellow line because its too narrow?

  20. Used to wash my MPV at Lor 7, T Payoh SPC but prices had been increasing and quality had been......... . First started at $6/- per wash in 2007 and then increased to $8/- per wash last year and recently one week before CNY, $9/-. Also tried at Caltex along Braddell Road (after SPH) which cost $5/- per vehicle (any types of vehicles) and also comes with a 'free next wash' coupon within a certain number of days. I used to get thick foam being sprayed onto the vehicle but now, only sponge from a big blue plastic drum containing the foam ...... Anyone know of a good manual wash to recommend ........

  22. M'sian drivers fume over petrol stations' no-credit card push GEORGE TOWN - MOTORISTS throughout Malaysia were left fuming and confused on Tuesday after 400 petrol stations in the northern region decided to stop accepting payments by credit card from Wednesday as the charges are cutting their profit margins. Motorists are angry that they have to pay by cash, especially when they are now paying more for their fuel. Chaos broke out in several towns in Sabah and Sarawak as panicked vehicle owners rushed to petrol stations to fill up after receiving irresponsible SMSes that petrol stations were closing for three days. Vehicle owners in the peninsula were also worried after receiving similar untrue SMSes of petrol stations closing. Motorists are angry over the sudden move by petrol stations in Penang, Kedah and Perlis to refuse payment by credit and fleet cards. The decision was made following a meeting in Butterworth at 3.30pm on Tuesday afer the Petroleum Dealers Association of Malaysia sent out a notice to 3,200 members nationwide advising them to refuse all cards. More than 400 stations in the northern region decided to enforce the move and started refusing the payment from midnight. In the meeting, Mobil Stations Malaysia deputy president Roslan Jamaludin said petrol station operators could no longer shoulder the burden of the card charges. 'We lose nearly 50 per cent of our profit to card transactions. How are we going to cut costs if everyone uses cards for their purchase?' he asked. He added that operators took this 'business decision' for 'long-term survival' and to highlight their plight to the Government. In response to the motorists' concerns, the Petrol Dealers Association of Malaysia gave the assurance that petrol stations are not going to close. Mr Wahid said the association was currently discussing with Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Samad over issues concerning credit card charges. Petrol stations had to pay credit card charges to banks amounting to 1 per cent of every transaction. This means with the increase in fuel prices, credit card charges for one litre of petrol was now 2.7 sen (S$0.011) instead of 1.92 sen previously. However, the profit margin for petrol station owners is based on a commission of each litre sold. That commission has not been increased despite the increase in petrol pump prices. Esso Petroleum Dealers Association of Malaysia president Alang Zari Ishak also assured motorists that Esso petrol stations would not close in protest. Irate motorist Zafran Zakri Mohamad, 37, said the petrol station operators should not be heartless. 'We are struggling to cope with the recent increase in fuel price. We thought we could depend on credit cards when we run out of cash,' he fumed. 'But now we cannot not even use credit cards. And to impose such a ruling at a time of month when most people are running out of cash is really unacceptable.' Car rental agent Kintan Natasuri Aziz, 40, who uses the fleet card, said the new ruling would pose much inconvenience to him, as he has to travel outstation to send and pick up cars for rental. 'We also do not carry much cash,' he said. Another motorist, Ms Maisarah Khairul Anuar, 27, said that if petrol station operators were unhappy with the interest imposed by the banks then they should take it up with banks. 'They should not make consumers suffer,' she said. Mr Ryan Tang, 31, a graphic designer, said it was not right to immediately implement such decision without giving prior notice to customers. 'What if we run out of petrol after midnight when the ATMs are closed and we cannot withdraw money?' said Mr Tang. - The Star/ANN. Singapore will Follow Or Not ?
