Mansor, 49, was a total stranger to Mr Tan Soy Yong, 76, who had soiled himself while grocery shopping. But that did not stop the bedsheet promoter from reaching out to help the elderly man. She cleaned off the faeces on Mr Tan, bought him a new pair of shorts and even accompanied him home. This act of kindness took place last Tuesday at the FairPrice supermarket at Toa Payoh HDB Hub, and was reported today in The New Paper. Ms Mansor, who works at the supermarket, had noticed that people around her were pinching their noses and looking uncomfortable about a foul smell in the air. She went about trying to locate the source of the stench, and found that it was coming from Mr Tan, who was standing at a cashier's counter with faeces on his shorts and shins. There was also a small lump of faeces on his sandals. Mr Tan had soiled his pants while grocery shopping with his wife, Madam Lee Bee Yian, 76, who was in a wheelchair. "No one was helping him even though he looked so pitiful," Ms Noriza told The New Paper. People were steering clear of Mr Tan and even his wife was complaining about the problem he had created, but Ms Noriza rose to action. She bought him a new pair of shorts from a store opposite the supermarket, and went to the FairPrice staff toilet to get a pail of water and some tissue. She then got Mr Tan to change into the clean shorts and asked him to sit on a nearby brick ledge, while she knelt before him and started to wipe the faeces off him. She also rinsed out his dirty sandals. All the while as she did so, she kept talking to Mr Tan. "I was telling him not to worry and that he would be clean very soon," said Ms Noriza, a divorcee with five children aged 10 to 25. When she was done, she accompanied the elderly couple back to their flat in Potong Pasir, before heading back to work. Ms Noriza's kind act was observed by currency trader Goh Rong Ren, 32, who was rushing off to a dinner appointment with his friends that day when a passer-by asked him to help Ms Noriza and the elderly couple. He helped to pay for the couple's cab fare home, and was so touched by Ms Noriza's compassion towards Mr Tan that he wanted people to know about what she did. He then got his friend to contact The New Paper. "Her selflessness towards a total stranger moved me. It was pure and unadulterated kindness," he said. Hi I am getting lazier in washing my car. But I wish to wash it myself. Any recommendation for All-In-One (AIO) product that I can do in less than 20mins? Preferably something that I can just spray water, apply, wipe off. Not trying to achieve any outstanding results after wash. Just a clean exterior will do. Thanks!

Whether we can do it won’t be a question in April 2020, when the Public Hygiene Council (PHC) launches CleanSG Day, an initiative to encourage people “to take personal responsibility for the cleanliness of our common spaces”. For 1 day in that month, cleaners across Singapore will either get a lighter workload or a whole day off, while residents take over their jobs. The exact date is yet to be confirmed. Cleaners can rest while residents do their work According to an article by Eco-Business, next year will be the first time that CleanSG will occur nationwide, after trial runs in several districts. In Nee Soon, where the trial had run, professional cleaners left parts of the area uncleaned so residents had to do it themselves instead. MP Louis Ng observed that residents who did so learnt just how much waste we generate, and that Singapore is “a cleaned city rather than a clean city”. So giving cleaners a lighter workload or rest will hopefully encourage more residents island-wide to step up and learn the same lesson. Furthermore, the national initiative could be a way of showing our gratitude towards the cleaners who don’t get enough recognition for their tireless efforts. Individual responsibility to keep Singapore clean Though we may depend on cleaners to keep large areas of Singapore clean, smaller acts like picking up stray pieces of litter is something we can all try to do. After all, it doesn’t take much to simply throw rubbish into the bin. Dirty streets are surely an eyesore to everyone. Dear all, Recently I had poured an almost full cup of sugary drink into one of my leather chair. Because the leather was perforated and had mini holes, most of the drink went inside to the car seat foam under the leather. I cleaned what I could with the leather and went for some chemical cleaning. But how to treat the foam inside? What other methods are there besides steam cleaning? Thanks

Hi all, Recently I spotted many white cars on the road. Seems that white is getting more popular. Just thinking of those owners who own a white car. What I saw is that my neighbour washes his white Nissan three times a week. He told me that he send for car grooming once every six months. How do you clean and/or maintain the white paintwork and any pointers to note or share please? White is not an easy colour to maintain. Hoping to learn more tips from white car owners. Cheers!

KATHMANDU - Twenty Nepali climbers are setting off to Mount Everest this week to try and remove decades-old garbage from the mountain in the world's highest ever clean-up campaign, organizers said on Monday. Many foreign and Nepali climbers have cleaned Mount Everest in the past but Namgyal Sherpa, leader of the Extreme Everest Expedition 2010, said no one had dared to clean above 8,000 meters , an area known as the "death zone" for the lack of oxygen and treacherous terrain. Sherpa and his team of seasoned climbers, carrying empty rucksacks and special bags, will risk the zone's thin air and freezing temperatures to pick empty oxygen bottles, gas canisters, torn tents, ropes, and utensils lying between the South Col and the 8,850 meter summit. "This is the first time we are cleaning at that height, the death zone. It is very difficult and dangerous," said Sherpa, who has climbed Everest, the world's tallest peak, seven times. "The garbage was buried under snow in the past. But now it has come out on the surface because of the melting of snow due to global warming," the 30-year-old said. "The rubbish is creating problems for climbers ... Some items of garbage are from Hillary's time." The mountain has become known as being the world's highest garbage dump. Many climbers leave their gear and trash behind as they descend due to exhaustion and lack of oxygen. New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary and Nepal's Tenzing Norgay Sherpa were the first to ascend to Mount Everest's summit in 1953. That feat opened Nepal as a popular tourist destination. More than 4,000 climbers have since scaled the mountain and tourism, including climbing, is a key source of income for Nepal, among the world's poorest countries. Sherpa's team hopes to bring down at least 2,000 kg of garbage and the corpse of a climber killed two years ago. "I have seen three corpses lying there for years," Sherpa said. "We'll bring down the body of a Swiss climber who died in the mountain in 2008 and cremate it below the base camp for which we have got the family's consent."

My previous car the roof interior is canvas like material, so can be clean easily with wet cloth when I cleaning my car interior. But my current car the roof interior is carpet or fur like material, have not touch it since I got my car more than a year ago... Anyone can advise how you clean/maintain your car roof interior for those carpet/fur like material? I sometime drives with the window down, so worried carbon/soot from vehicle exhaust will cling onto the roof interior... Thanks.

Hi, need you help! My fabric car seat was quite dusty. I have tried to use those normal car vacuum cleaner to vacuum the seat, but no use at all. Pls advise me how to clean the dust. Thanks!

Has anyone remove the front mudguard and wheel arc cover to clear those rotten leaves, sand, small tree branches, flowers etc etc out from the firewall? Its a good way to keep away roaches and ants. Spread some old newspaper on the ground when before u start digging. Preferable with a water hose so that u can jet out all those rubbish accumulated inside there. If you have not done before, have fun. This is inside my bi annual DIY maintenance program.

The city's health and family planning commission has not disclosed what penalties were given to the properties, which are operated by Kempinski, Shangri-La and Sheraton. It comes after undercover video footage emerged online on Tuesday that showed cleaners at the hotels using the same brushes to wipe the toilets, bathtubs, sinks and other surfaces, sparking public concern over cleanliness. Footage recorded at the Kempinski and Shangri-La properties even showed workers using the same brush to wipe drinking water cups and then drying them with used bath towels. All three luxury hotels were accused of failing to change bath towels, bed sheets and pillow cases for new guests, despite charging from about 800 yuan to 2,800 yuan (S$163 to S$572) for a room per night. Shortly after the video began to spread online, inspectors from the health commission, tourism office, market supervision department, food and drug administration, and legislative affairs office descended on the properties to collect samples for testing, according to the city government. The results of these tests confirmed that the hotels had hygiene problems. "We feel sorry to learn about the substandard conditions found at our hotel," the Kempinski Harbin said in a post on Sina Weibo on Tuesday. "We have been working on providing our guests a friendly and safe environment with strict policies. We will co-operate with the investigation and strengthen measures to avoid similar problems." However, the case has again affected people's faith in the quality of five-star accommodation in China. Undercover footage exposed similar hygiene issues at five high-end hotels in Beijing in September. "I have clients in different cities, so I frequently travel for business," said Sun Chang, 36, the manager of an advertising agency in Beijing. "I've heard such things happen in some midrange hotels, so I usually choose well-known five-star hotels during my trips. I didn't imagine the problems are just as serious there. "I'm considering taking my own sheets, sleeping bags, kettles and bathrobes on my next trip." Harbin has now launched a citywide inspection of all hotels. "It is really difficult to monitor cleaners in the hotel rooms without cameras being installed," Wu Ben, an associate professor of hotel management at Shanghai's Fudan University, told Caixin magazine on Tuesday. Targets:- kopitiam, food courts, hawker centers, shopping centers, etc. after so many campaigns, and collecting fees, have you come across any clean ones? A few hawker centers have "relatively" clean ones, eg serangoon gdn new food centre, thiong bahru HC, but any more? Maybe also tells us which ones to avoid? I remember pub toilets in even Taipei, no need to say Japan, are cleaner.... Same crowded city, same Asian users, but the conditions in these toilets are cleaner than ours. just bought this to clean my PEARL WHITE 5year old odysset... what can i say ... CHEAP AND GOOD got lots of ang-mo brand in my storeroom, but this one cleans the best. see so many stains after 5 years come out so easily. its a cleaner-polish-wax in one, so good for lazy folks like me.

got a lot of black ants in my car.... =( will see one or two of them occasionally, but when i leave a sweet on the dashboard for a few minutes... i'll see tonnes... sometimes, i do see a few tiny cockroaches moving around too... any suggestions on how to get rid of all of them?

My colleague told me his room-mate (lady nurse) was looking for a place to rent in those Bukit Ho Swee new flats (opp the lor-mee coffee shop). She saw a lady staring at her but no one else could see. Freaked her out totally. Could it be true cos those flats seemed not fully occupied although they have been built for years ?

NEA claims diesel vehicles are still as pollutive as before

The National Environmental Agency recently revealed that vehicles, especially diesel powered ones, are just as pollutive as a few years ago. Are we backwards when compared to the western continents in embracing clean diesel technologies? The figures say it all - 5,809 summons issued for emission-related offences for the first nine months of this year, compared to 6,381 in 2012 and 4,794 in the year before. Though it is arguable that this year saw a slight reprieve from last year - with three months to go but 500 cases less - the current figure is still substantially more than that of 2011’s. The legal limit for vehicle emission in Singapore is 50 Hartridge Smoke Units (HSU) - any vehicle caught exceeding the limit will be fined up to $5,000. Many see it as a natural course of actions. Diesel vehicles are often perceived as being pollutive, loud and unrefined. But on hindsight, it can actually mean that our local nation has been dilatory in adopting clean diesel technologies. We have spoken much about technological advancement in the field of combustion engines, especially those that run on diesel. The efficiency, refinement, and emission standard have been substantially improved, so much so that diesel engines have found their way into premium passenger cars. Diesel powered cars are particularly favoured over their petrol driven counterparts in the western continent. Fear not, though, as a new rule will kick in starting next year - a smoke opacity test that requires diesel cars to score an emission result of 40 HSU and below, before their road tax can be renewed.
