  1. Hi, Planning to reno my home and change all the windows. Old HDB flat, no extend ledge on top, thus have to close window whenever rain. What is you take of the differences between sliding and casement windows? and also with or without top-hung section. To me, casement window will direct wind blow into the flat but sliding window will not. Sliding window easier to open close. casement window more sound proof? (my room facing E'way) Having top-hung window, they say at least got ventilation when heavy rain have to close all other windows but I don't feel the different. Worst, cleaning the window more leceh compare to cleaning one whole piece...
  2. https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/fallen-windows-49-cases-2020-bca-hdb-corrosion-maintenance-13750762 49 cases of fallen windows in the first 11 months of this year SINGAPORE: There were 49 cases of fallen windows across Singapore between January and November this year, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) said in a joint media release with the Housing and Development Board (HDB) on Friday (Dec 11). Thirty-two of these involved casement windows, or windows with a side that is hinged to a frame. Sixteen cases were of fallen sliding windows, while the remaining incident involved louvre windows or those with horizontal panels. No injuries were reported from these incidents, said the agencies. The number of cases reported in the first 11 months of this year is not far from the 51 incidents in the whole of 2019. “Over the past few years, the number of fallen window cases we see yearly remains at about 50 cases. While there has not been an increase in numbers, there has also not been any improvement," said BCA’s director of facade engineering and technology department Lee Chee Weye. BCA said the key causes of fallen casement windows included corrosion in aluminium rivets in casement window fittings. "Corrosion compromises the strength of the rivets, rendering it unable to hold the casement window panels firmly in place," said the agency. Since 2004, a retrofitting order issued by BCA requires home owners to replace all aluminium rivets in casement windows with stainless steel ones. In the case of fallen sliding windows, investigations showed that there was a lack of proper safety stoppers and angle strips to keep panels within the tracks. "Sliding window panels without these safety features in place detached and fell when homeowners applied excessive outward force in opening or closing the windows," BCA added. Home owners can face a penalty of up to S$5,000 and/or a jail term of up to six months for failing to replace all aluminium rivets in casement windows with stainless steel ones.

  11. I thought 10 years ago, all HDB die die must change stainless steel screws. Many even kena summoned for not changing in time. So by right all new HDB n condos should be using stainless steels screw by now. How the 85% slipped thru inspections? AsiaOne Monday, Jun 04, 2012 More than 70 per cent of all fallen windows incidents are due to poor window maintenance, and at least 85 per cent of casement windows fell as a result of failing to retrofit the windows with stainless steel rivets. These were the findings of the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) and Housing & Development Board (HDB). In a joint statement, the two governmental bodies advised homeowners to check and maintain their windows once every six months, and repairing them if necessary, to minimise incidents of fallen windows. According to BCA, there were 35 cases of fallen windows from January to May this year, compared to the 20 cases during the same period in 2011 and 2010. All windows are subjected to wear and tear and may detach and fall when window parts become loose or defective. To counter this problem, homeowners are advised to follow three simple steps: For casment windows, they should 1) check that the fasteners are not rusty or loose 2) clean and lubricate joints or movable parts 3) change all rivets from aluminium to stainless steel For sliding windows, homeowners should 1) check that the safety stoppers and/or angle strips are in place or not damaged 2) clean the tracks and ensure the window panels can slide smoothly 3) change worn-out safety stoppers and angle strips BCA and HDB have also been stepping up efforts to create greater awareness of the importance of window safety. Besides the biannual Window Safety Campaign on June 6 and December 12, BCA and HDB are also reaching out to educate the community through roving exhibitions on windows safety. To further encourage residents to check and maintain their windows, toolkits for window maintenance are also given out during the exhibitions. BCA will also be carrying out windows inspections at both private and HDB estates to reinforce the importance of regular window maintenance. Under the law, homeowners or tenants could face a fine of up to $10,000 and/or receive a jail term of up to one year if a window falls due to lack of maintenance. In addition, if any fallen casement window is found with aluminium rivets, they can also face a further penalty of a $5,000 fine and/or jail term of up to six months, for failing to retrofit the window with stainless steel rivets. A list of BCA-approved window contractors and window maintenance tips can be found at http://www.bca.gov.sg/windows_safety and http://www.hdb.gov.sg/windows_safety. [email protected]
  12. Hi I noticed that when i drive early in the morning, the air is good and the surrounding is cool. therefore, i can off the aircon and enjoy natural air while saving fuel. But what is the most effective way? To consider: 1) Wind resistance (more windows open = more drag? ) 2) Safety (driver side opening fully is dangerous on the expressway? ) 3) Dirty interior due to road dust/dirt sticking on leather I also notice that opening half full will cause the window pane to vibrate at speeds of 80km/hr. Will there be risk of it breaking? Pls vote!
  13. Guys, Where to get those window blinds that can roll up ? Any recommendations ? Mods, if wrong , please move.

  17. Updated 03:51 PM Oct 20, 2012 NEW YORK - The release of Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system is a week away, and consumers are in for a shock. Windows, used in one form or another for a generation, is getting a completely different look that will force users to learn new ways to get things done. Microsoft is making a radical break with the past to stay relevant in a world where smartphones and tablets have eroded the three-decade dominance of the personal computer. Windows 8 is supposed to tie together Microsoft's PC, tablet and phone software with one look. But judging by the reactions of some people who have tried the PC version, it's a move that risks confusing and alienating customers. Tony Roos, an American missionary in Paris, installed a free preview version of Windows 8 on his aging laptop to see if Microsoft's new operating system would make the PC faster and more responsive. It didn't, he said, and he quickly learned that working with the new software requires tossing out a lot of what he knows about Windows. "It was very difficult to get used to," he said. "I have an 8-year-old and a 10-year-old, and they never got used to it. They were like, `We're just going to use Mom's computer.'" Windows 8 is the biggest revision of Microsoft Corp.'s operating system since it introduced Windows 95 amid great fanfare 17 years ago. Ultimately, Windows grew into a US$14 billion a year business and helped make former Chief Executive Bill Gates the richest man in the world for a time. Now, due to smartphones and tablets, the personal computer industry is slumping. Computer companies are desperate for something that will get sales growing again. PC sales are expected to shrink this year for the first time since 2001, according to IHS iSuppli, a market research firm. The question is whether the new version, which can be run on tablets and smartphones, along with the traditional PC, can satisfy the needs of both types of users. "I am very worried that Microsoft may be about to shoot itself in the foot spectacularly," said. Michael Mace, the CEO of Silicon Valley software startup Cera Technology and a former Apple employee. Windows 8 is so different, he said, that many Windows users who aren't technophiles will feel lost, he said. Microsoft is releasing Windows 8 on Oct. 26, and it doesn't plan to cushion the impact. Computer companies will make Windows 8 standard on practically all PCs that are sold to consumers. Speaking to Wall Street analysts on Thursday, Microsoft's chief financial officer Peter Klein said he isn't very concerned that user confusion could slow the adoption of Windows 8. When Microsoft introduces new features, he said, people eventually realize that "those innovations have delivered way more value, way more productivity and way better usability." That's going to be true of Windows 8 too, he said. Instead of the familiar Start menu and icons, Windows 8 displays applications as a colorful array of tiles, which can feature updated information from the applications. For instance, the "Photos" tile shows an image from the user's collection, and the "People" tile shows images from the user's social-media contacts. (Microsoft is licensed to use AP content in the Windows 8 news applications.) The tiles are big and easy to hit with a finger - convenient for a touch screen. Applications fill the whole screen by default - convenient for a tablet screen, which is usually smaller than a PC's. The little buttons that surround Windows 7 applications, for functions like controlling the speaker volume, are hidden, giving a clean, uncluttered view. When you need those little buttons, you can bring them out, but users have to figure out on their own how to do it. "In the quest for simplicity, they sacrificed obviousness," said Sebastiaan de With, an interface designer and the chief creative officer at app developer DoubleTwist in San Francisco. Technology blogger Chris Pirillo posted a YouTube video of his father using a preview version of Windows 8 for the first time. As the elder Pirillo tours the operating system with no help from his son, he blunders into the old "Desktop" environment and can't figure out how to get back to the Start tiles. (Hint: Move the mouse cursor into the top right corner of the screen, then swipe down to the "Start" button that appears, and click it. On a touch screen, swipe a finger in from the right edge of the screen to reveal the Start button.) The four-minute video has been viewed more than 1.1 million times since it was posted in March. "There are many things that are hidden," said Raluca Budiu, a user experience specialist with Nielsen Norman Group. "Once users discover them, they have to remember where they are. People will have to work hard and use this system on a regular basis." Mace, the software CEO, has used every version of Windows since version 2.0, which came out in 1987. Each one, he said, built upon the previous one. Users didn't need to toss out their old ways of doing things when new software came along. Windows 8 ditches that tradition of continuity, he said. "Most Windows users don't view their PCs as being broken to begin with. If you tell them `Oh, here's a new version of Windows, and you have to relearn everything to use it,' how many normal users are going to want to do that?" he asked. The familiar Windows Desktop is still available through one of the tiles, and most programs will open up in that environment. But since the Start button is gone, users will have to flip back and forth between the desktop and the tile screen. There's additional potential for confusion because there's one version of Windows 8, called "Windows RT," that looks like the PC version but doesn't run regular Windows programs. It's intended for tablets and lightweight tablet-laptop hybrids. Budiu believes the transition to Windows 8 will be most difficult for PC users, because Microsoft's design choices favor touch screens rather than mice and keyboards. Alex Wukovich, a Londoner who tried Windows 8 on a friend's laptop, agrees. "On a desktop, it just felt really weird," he said. "It feels like it's a tablet operating system that Microsoft managed to twist and shoehorn onto a desktop." Not everyone who has tried Windows 8 agrees with the critics. Sheldon Skaggs, a Web developer in Charlotte, N.C., thought he was going to hate Windows 8, but he needed to do something to speed up his 5-year-old laptop. So he installed the new software. "After a bit of a learning curve and playing around with it a bit more, you get used to it, surprisingly," he said. The computer now boots up faster than it did with Windows Vista, he said. Vista was Microsoft's most recent operating-system flop. It was seen as so clunky and buggy when released in 2007 that many PC users sat out the upgrade cycle and waited for Windows 7, which arrived two and a half years later. Companies and other institutions wait much longer than consumers to upgrade their software, and many will keep paying for Windows 7. Many companies are still using Windows XP, released in 2001. Colin Gillis, an analyst at BGC Financial, is optimistic about Windows 8, pointing out that it's snappy and runs well on PCs with limited processing power, making it suited for compact, tablet-style machines. But he also notes that through Microsoft's history, roughly every other operating-system release has been a letdown. Intel Corp. makes the processors that go into 80 percent of PCs, and has a strong interest in the success of Windows. CEO Paul Otellini said Tuesday that when the company has let consumers try Windows 8 on expensive "ultrabook" laptops with touch screens, "the feedback is universally positive." But he told analysts that he doesn't really know if people will embrace Windows 8 for mainstream PCs. "We'll know a lot more about this 90 days from now," he said. - AP todayonline

  20. I have an interesting discussion on another internet forum with a friends. It was a 3D design forum, & he commented why another person (from Hong Kong) was making a window (3D) that open outwards. He (Swiss) said he never seen a window that open outwards & comment that even virtual items should follow real world logic. I told him that in Hong Kong, its very populated, & people live in small Apartments (not unlike Singapore). Opening the windows inwards will eat up the already limited space, which is a possiblity why windows are open outwards.. Anyway, we manage to find pictures of windows opening outwards (amazing isn't it!), but he said, oh, but that's not the NORM. I proceed to tell him, that in Singapore, windows normally open outwards or with a slider, so windows opening inwards is not a worldwide norm. Now comes the interesting part.... He said he was curious how many people in Singapore fall out of the windows in the morning! Like a true blue Singaporean, I proceed to provide a picture of a typical HDB window & said, its a requirement to have metal frame on window frame (to prevent what he said, fall out of windows), but people DO FALL out of windows every now & then from cleaning the windows, as the outerside of our sliding windows or outwards opening windows can only be reach......from the outside! Never in my life have it cross my mind that people falling from window to clean windows is just fundamentally how the windows is open! I know someone may say if they (mainly maids these days) are more careful, or educated, this will not happen, but it doesn't change the fact that the design give the issue in the first place. Would you guys have trade a little space, to have the windows open inwards, for a little safety, not just cleaning windows, but also preventing falling over an open window (ok, normally not an issue as we have metal frame). My guess is most people will rather have the extra space, but it would be interesting to hear your views or have how the window is open & its potential problem cross your mind.
  21. As the topic, MPV rear windows' film can be darker than sedan LTA requirements for passenger cars' rear windows must be at least 25% light transmittance, sedans normally comply with this policy, but MPV such as Wish, Stream etc rear windows light transmittance definitely less than that can anyone explain?

  23. SINGAPORE: The Manpower Ministry has ruled that with immediate effect, employers shall not allow their foreign domestic workers to clean the exterior of windows unless two safety conditions are met. MOM said the new rules will apply to all homes, except for windows that are at ground level or along common corridors. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1205502/1/.html
