This was driven home today in a post on the Fastlane Blog by Chevy general manager Ed Peper. Seeing him advocate his brand's (and GM's) flagship is far from surprising, and as he rattles off the car's positives, it seems like pretty standard-issue public relations fare. It's only as he wraps up that he seems to get a little exercised over some folks' habit of turning all Corvette-related conversations into pushroad vs. overhead-cam arguments. In response, he namechecks some very heavy hitters -- the Porsche 911 GT2, the Ferrari 599 GTB, and the Lambo LP640 -- as he casually pulls the gloves off, matter-of-factly stating that the ZR1 has a better power-to-weight ratio than all of them. Then, in his parting shot, he dons the brass knuckles and calls out any and all comers who would challenge the Corvette ZR1's abilities with two simple words: "Bring it." You know what it is when this kind of smack talk starts flying around? It's fun. And we haven't even heard from Lutz yet. ----------------------------------------------

New C8 Corvette Stingray drivers can adjust brake feel of their cars

General Motors has fitted the new Corvette with a brake-by-wire system that allows its owners to adjust the braking feel according to their moods. Making use of a brake-by-wire system, this setup has allowed engineers to combine the braking master cylinder, vacuum booster, vacuum pump, and electronic brake control module into one single unit, thereby also allowing them to tune the amount of braking force needed to be applied on the pedal when stopping the car. According to its press materials, the drivers have a choice of three different modes, Tour, Sport and Track. In Tour mode, drivers will not need to apply a lot of force to stop the car and will have a comfortable brake feel for everyday driving. Sport will give a more immediate and stronger-biting feel while in Track, the braking will be more linear while still having an aggressive feel at the limit to allow drivers to trail-brake during hard driving. That said, the Corvette is not the first nor only car to have such a feature. BMW's M8 is touted to have such a similarly advance braking system. -
Last seventh-generation Corvette sells for $3.65 million

With the new mid-engined Chevrolet C8 coming soon, someone has bought the last front-engined seventh-generation Corvette for a lot of money. In fact, he paid S$3.65 million for the car which only retails for S$110,000 in the U.S. The model is question a black Z06 model and has been bought by Dan Snyder, the CEO of digital media company inLighten and founder of Dan Snyder Motorsports. The car was donated by Chevrolet and it was bidded at the Barrett-Jackson Northeast Auction which also hosted the auction for the last Dodge Viper and Dodge Demon ever built last year. Interestingly, both cars also went to Dan Snyder at S$1.35 million each. “It’s exhilarating to win and a privilege to have the responsibility of caring for these historic vehicles that I believe are an important part of America’s heritage. To me, they exemplify American craftsmanship, engineering excellence, and manufacturing prowess,” Snyder said. Dan Snyder and his son has as collected almost 100 performance cars over the years, including 30 Vipers and has pointed out that the Z06 that he just collected will not be a garage queen. The sum of money from the Corvette will be donated to the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which assists fallen and injured military members, first responders and their families. -
Kid gets electric miniature C7 Stingray which can do burnouts

This four-year old kid is one lucky guy. This miniature C7 Chevorlet Stingray, which can do burnouts and donuts, belongs to him. Thanks to his cool dad, his little toy has double the voltage (from the factory's 12 volt to 24 volt) and a upgraded drivetrain that uses steel gears rather than the stock plastic ones to handle the additional poke. National Corvette Museum may preserve sinkhole as tourist attraction

The people at the National Corvette Museum are hoping to turn a catastrophe into an opportunity for continued success. Since all eight cars eaten by the 40-foot wide and 60-foot deep sinkhole were removed and put on display, the museum has seen an uptick in visitors to check the wrecked 'Vettes out. According to CNN, attendance was up over 50 percent for March. The next step might be stabilizing the hole and making it a permanent part of the Skydome hall along with some of the most damaged cars. Several of the eight Corvettes appear to be salvageable as well. The museum's board of directors meets with restorers in May to decide the next step. However, a few of them, like the Mallett Hammer, might be beyond repair. It now looks like little more than a twisted ball of metal and may remain on display in that condition. The board is also considering what to do about the sinkhole. "There is a possibility of leaving it here. Whether, it's just a portion or all of it, having a bridge over it, stairs that go down in it, a glass floor on top where you can look down," said Katie Frassinelli from the National Corvette Museum to CNN. "We're talking to the construction company and engineers just to see the possibilities." It would definitely be a unique exhibit. -

The National Corvette Museum has recovered the last of eight cars that disappeared into a sinkhole underneath the building two months ago. The 2001 "Mallett Hammer" Z06 is hardly recognizable after being crushed by rocks, rubble and the weight of several other cars. Most of its body was left stuck in the dirt, upside down, as the perimeter frame and drivetrain components were pulled from the hole. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWJSDwUUlqk "The 2001 Mallett Hammer Z06 was one of two Corvettes that's whereabouts were initially unknown after the sinkhole happened," the museum noted. "The car was finally discover this Monday, upside down with the nose pointing towards the red Spire in the center of the room. It is, by far, the most heavily damaged of all eight Corvettes." Customized by Mallett Cars, the Z06 was tuned to produce 700 horsepower and 575 lb-ft of torque. It claimed a quarter-mile run of 10.6 seconds at 128 mph, and reached 181 mph on a one-mile top-speed event. Now that all of the Corvettes have been recovered from the sinkhole, engineers will continue to stabilize the walls before beginning the reconstruction process. -
A 1993 40th Anniversary Chevrolet Corvette is unstrapped from the crane that removed it from a sinkhole at the National Corvette Museum on Monday. Two of the eight Corvettes swallowed Feb. 12 by a sinkhole at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Ky., were lifted out of the hole and placed back in the showroom. As a crowd of spectators cheered and thousands of viewers watched online, the 2009 ZR1 Blue Devil -- one of two cars on loan from General Motors -- and the 1993 Ruby Red 40th anniversary edition were lifted by a crane and placed at ground level. The Blue Devil, which appears to have endured minor damage during its nearly 30-foot plunge, was driven about 20 feet to the museum's doorway, said Katie Frassinelli, a museum spokeswoman. Video of the retrieval showed that the Ruby Red 40th anniversary edition sustained broken windows and severe damage to its front and rear. Retrieval of a black 1962 model will be much "trickier" as a five-ton slab of concrete rests on the front of the vehicle, the museum said. Two cranes will be used to simultaneously lift the car and the concrete, the museum said. Other Corvettes to be retrieved are a 1993 ZR-1 Spyder, the other car on loan from GM; a 1984 PPG pace car; the 1-millionth Vette, built in 1992; a 2001 Mallett Hammer Z06; and the 2009 1.5-millionth Corvette. Recovery of the vehicles is expected to take through Aug. The museum plans to display each vehicle after it is recovered until all eight are taken together to a small shop within GM Design in suburban Detroit for restoration. Webcams are positioned around the sinkhole and pictures are available on the museum's Web site.

A 40-foot sinkhole opened up under the National Corvette Museum in Kentucky on Wednesday and swallowed eight collector cars, including the historic one millionth Corvette built in 1992. No injuries were reported, but a 1993 ZR-1 Spyder and a 2009 ZR1 “Blue Devil” on loan from General Motors Co were among the iconic cars piled up in the gaping pit. It seems almost Biblical in a way, to have the ground open up and swallow the cream of the collection of the museum, what are the odds? Alarms went off early Wednesday morning in the “Skydome” area and museum security officers who rushed to the scene discovered the sinkhole, 25 to 30 feet (7.6 to 9m) deep. The Bowling Green Fire Department estimated its width at 40 feet (12m). Security camera footage posted on the museum’s web site shows two cars falling in as the hole opens up. Museum spokeswoman Laura Johnson said other cars near the sinkhole have been safely removed, and the museum was now trying to find a way to pull up the damaged Corvettes. Evidently, 'what to do next' includes moving other cars in their collection that might be at risk due to the sinkhole. Because the museum operates so many webcams, it's been possible to follow the action unfolding live. Chevrolet has confirmed it will stop selling cars across Europe at the end of 2015. The announcement came days after GM CEO Dan Akerson expressed his wish to put more distance between Germany-based Opel and the Bowtie brand. When the brand was launched in Europe in 2005, it focused on selling low-cost cars that were a little more than just rebadged, South Korean-built Daewoos. The business model was not popular and the company was hit hard by the economic crisis in Europe few years ago. Chevrolet tried to move upmarket and woo European buyers by focusing on its American heritage, but customers were not convinced by the company's new image and sales have been lingering at under 200,000 units with no signs of improvement. The final nail in Chevrolet's coffin came from Opel, GM's main European division. Most of the two companies' products are aimed at the same target audience and GM believes that shuttering Chevrolet will help Opel to return to profitability in its home market after years of crippling losses. Iconic Chevrolet models like the Corvette and the Camaro will continue to be imported with a Bowtie emblem but they will likely be distributed through Opel dealerships. Similarly, Opel dealerships will honor Chevrolet warranties and provide owners with parts and service. It is unsure how many jobs will be lost once Chevy's European arm shuts down.

If you're a car fan, chances are you're somehow familiar with the 'Transformers' franchise. Now, within around a year to come, you may be waiting in line at the cinema to get your ticket for 'Transformers 4'. Yes, you heard it right. The latest sequel to the robot-transforming car movies is expected to arrive by June 2014. While most people are talking about Mark Wahlberg (remember him in 'Ted' or 'Broken City'?) replacing Shia LaBeouf as the main protagonist, what's more interesting to me is the addition of some new cars. It seems that director Michael Bay does have some quite serious taste for cars indeed. For Transformers 4, he'll be bringing a special edition Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse with a W16 quad-turbo engine. It's capable of spitting out 1,200bhp of power and 1,500Nm of torque in total. Well, that's not the only excitement, though. In addition to the Vitesse, the director will be bringing the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette C7 Stingray as well. However, I suggest that you avoid trying to compare the Vitesse and Stingray side by side, especially in terms of price. It's out of the question that the Stingray's pricing is nowhere near the Vitesse. While you can get your hands on the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette C7 Stingray with US$50,000 (approximately S$63,000), you need at least US$2.4 million (approximately S$3 million) to drive home the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse. However, this 'Transformer' (the Stingray, supposedly an Autobot) does win when it comes to playing an American hero. If you are an automotive nut and are visiting the United States in the near future, then read on. There is an automotive museum in Los Angeles, United States known as the Petersen Automotive Museum. It is one of the world's largest automotive museums in the world. Spanning over 300,000 square feet, the museum holds more than 150 vehicles at any one time. The museum has another 300 plus vehicles in an on-site storage and these vehicles are waiting for a chance to be exhibited. Most of the exhibitions held there change frequently every three to seven months and individually exhibited vehicles and smaller exhibitions change more frequently. In the near future, there will be several special exhibitions and one of them is the 'Corvette 60th anniversary' exhibition. There will be a display of twenty historic Corvettes from all model generations and also Corvette concept models. This special exhibition will run from February 27th to March 31st 2013. Another upcoming special event is the 'Aerodynamics: From Art to Science' exhibition. The showcase will present visitors with an overview of the landmarks of aerodynamic design over the past century. There will be over a dozen vehicles exhibited and it will run from June 16th to May 27th 2013. An interesting feature of the museum is an underground vault where many of the museum's rare treasures are kept. Initially, the public were not allowed to visit the underground vault. But recently, the museum held guided public tours there during the 2012 December holidays. After overwhelming popularity of the guided public tours, the museum has extended these tours indefinitely. That means the public will get a chance to see some of the rare vehicles the museum has. A reported stolen Chevrolet Corvette found after 10 years in a container

Losing a car to theft is one of the most aggravating thing that could happened to a car owner especially if that person has put his/her blood, sweat and tears into it. Stolen vehicles usually end up being stripped into parts or shipped out of the country totally and the chances of getting it back are rather low. In Brisbane, Australia; a rather strange incident happened when dock workers inspected a container that has been sitting for ten years. In it, they found a 1968 Chevrolet Corvette convertible. In 2002, the Corvette was reported stolen by its owner in Australia. After an intensive search by the authorities and nothing was found, the owner received compensation by the insurance company (Suncorp Insurance). Recently, dock workers were inspecting containers at a dock in Brisbane and they discovered a container that no one could account for. After opening it, they found the missing Corvette, sitting on time flattened tyres. The car was considered to be in a rather good condition, not too bad after ten years. The third generation Corvette (also commonly known as the Corvette Stingray) has only 77,000 kilometres on the odometer before it went missing. It seems that it was a base model Corvette since it has the 327 cubic inch (5.4 litre) small block V8 engine fitted. Additionally, the car was fitted with a four speed manual transmission. Records show that the car was built on December 1967 and that means it is an early production third generation Corvette. Since the insurance company has already compensated the owner, they will auction the car off in order to recover any losses or make some profit from it. After sitting for ten years, the car needs some work to make it road worthy. Once it is ready, the Corvette is expected to fetch around $15,000 to $20,000 (in Aussie dollars). Image credit: Drive -
The late Neil Armstrong was a very famous man due to him being the first man to walk on the moon in 1969. Astronauts of that time were on the same level as celebrities. And in order to drum up sales, a Chevrolet dealer (Rathmann Chevrolet) in Florida tried to get as many astronauts as they could to drive one of their cars. Astronauts were given a special lease to allow them to trade in for a new Corvette every year and in 1967, Armstrong got a blue Chevrolet Corvette that came with a 390bhp V8 engine and mated to a four speed transmission. The following year, he traded it for a 1968 model and the 1967 Corvette was sold to a NASA employee who has owned the car for 44 years. The car has not been started since September 1981 and the owner has mentioned that he kept the car in a climate controlled area. Over the years, the owner has added fender flares and aftermarket wheels to it. Additionally, the carburettor, water pump and exhaust system has also been replaced. The owner has offered the car for sale at this current condition and a Corvette restorer has bought it. In Singapore, finding an old classic car is something not that easy nor is it common due to the fact that our country is very small and there are not much of these cars left. But in big countries such as the United States, barn finds happen rather often and sometimes that find could be a gem. The vehicle you see in the pictures here is a 1961 C1 Chevrolet Corvette Roadster with 93423 miles (150,349 km) on the odometer and has been parked since 1968. The car was found by the guys at Barn Finds, a web based group who hunt for old vehicles and classic cars and publish them on their site for enthusiasts to snatch them up. Apparently, this particular C1 Corvette was found in Las Vegas and it has two owners since new. The current owner has parked the car for the last time in 1968 and it has not run since then. The Corvette has a 4.6-litre dual carburettor V8 engine that generates around 270bhp. The weather condition in Las Vegas has left the car in a terrible state. The car is also covered in huge amount of dust, both exterior and interior of it. Right now, it is on sale on eBay Motors and it is being sold with a hard top, without the convertible top and also without any of the convertible top

Will be on display in the following venues: Oct 21-23: 1 Utama (New Wing) Nov 12-13: Gurney Plaza Penang Nov 18-20: City Square, JB Dunno will come to Singapore or not. Road tax will completely slaughter you. Vette C06 is 6.0L V8. Vette Z06 is 7.0L V8. Dunno if SA will bring over. Wah, if scrap got nice cheap V8 to mod.
