  1. When I was learning how to ride, the biggest realisation I had about riding was that it was very much a solo pursuit. Should anything happen to me - touch wood - I can only rely on myself. I ride defensively and never assume that good Samaritans will come to my aid. I'm not one for group rides, and the missus does not want to ride pillion. So, riding a bike is something I do alone. But after I scrapped my first bike and bought a second one, I realised that motorcycling also turned me into a playboy of sorts. Gleaming, curvy, and tempting. (Image: Ronnzy Moto, Unsplash) Terms of use As far as I'm aware, a playboy (or player) refers to a guy who prolifically dates a lot of women without committing to anyone. Or he could be someone that gets into one short-term relationship after another, moving on because the 'chase' is over and/or because he's tired of his partner. The first two definitions don't fit me. I don't go around renting/trying bikes. Nor do I buy a bike only to sell it after a month so I can move on. However, I am the type who fully commits to a single bike - mentally and emotionally. But at the same time, I'm aware that the bike - no matter how I attached I am to it - has a shelf life. Depreciation will eventually crater its value, so I must move on before that happens. I feel guilty for thinking about my bike in such transactional terms. But as a friend pointed out, unless I was planning to keep one bike forever (forsaking all others), I had to cash out while it still had value. That way, I wouldn't have to spend so much on my next bike. In other words, dump the older bike and move onto to a younger model. (Image: christian romei, Unsplash) (Mixed) feelings vs reality I bought my current bike when it was four years old and it will turn six in November this year. Already, the wheels in my head are turning. The calculations are being made. The older the bike gets, the more TLC it will need and the less it will be worth. I will be further from the bike I wanted. And so, I find myself thinking about when it'll be time once again to bid adieu. The relationship is still good, yet I'm plotting a breakup while fantasising about another machine. There's a heartlessness to this endeavour, and it takes a while to process. I can't go from feeling attached to wanting to detach at a moment's notice. There's no internal switch you can flip to change your emotions. And it'll be especially difficult to part with a machine that's not going to bike heaven, but to another owner. What if I spot it on the roads again? Will that be joyful, awkward, bittersweet, a guilt trip, or all the above? Maybe I am a playboy when it comes to motorcycles. But I genuinely love the bikes I'm with. Plus, I sort of have a conscience. Otherwise, I wouldn't feel torn up when it's time to move to the next one. – Jeremy Main Image: Tuyen Vo, Unsplash
  2. Riding a motorcycle is like taking your nose on a wild adventure. You're cruising down the road, expecting to smell nothing except exhaust fumes and perhaps rubbish, when suddenly - bam! - you're hit with the mouthwatering aroma of sizzling char kway teow from a nearby coffeeshop. Heck, you might even catch a whiff of someone's fancy perfume as you zip by. It's like your bike has magical powers, transforming an ordinary ride into a sensory rollercoaster. It's these unexpected olfactory delights that make motorcycling an even more engaging experience than you thought possible. Seeing, hearing, feeling, smelling, and yes, even tasting things (yikes) are possible on a motorcycle. (Image: Stephen Kidd, Unsplash) The unexpected scents As you cruise along, you'll encounter an array of unexpected scents that car drivers often miss. I've caught the tantalising smell of roasting coffee, freshly cut grass, and even 'that smell' you get after it rains. These make your journey more engaging and memorable. It's not just about the thrill of the ride - it's about immersing yourself in the world around you, one unexpected whiff at a time. Don't ride while you're hungry – the scent of wok hei will make you feel weak! (Image: Advocator SY, Unsplash) Once, I was riding along an arterial road, on my way home for dinner, when the smell of fast food (McDonald's fries, in particular) hit me. Was there a delivery rider somewhere in front? Did someone have fries in their car and have their windows open? It was a mystery. Surprisingly, you'll also often catch unexpected whiffs of perfume in the wind. These random scents add another layer to the sensory experience of riding. This writer still wonders where the scent of Macs wafted from. (Image: Brett Jordan, Unsplash) Earthy encounters: Navigating the 'fragrance' of manure Of course, not everything smells good. The open-air nature of riding allows you to experience a symphony of scents, including the earthy aroma of manure. While you might wrinkle your nose at first, this pungent smell serves as a reminder that the greenery/landscaping we enjoy requires upkeep in the form of err, plant food. Indeed, it's a stark contrast to the sterile environment of a car, where you'd likely miss these authentic, albeit sometimes unpleasant, fragrances. – Jeremy Main image: Gijs Coolen, Unsplash

  6. I read from the websites that parking offences seem to be under the purview of HDB and URA. So how does the traffic police fit into the picture? Apologies if this question is too stupid...
  7. Met an irresponsible Lady Lexus driver this morning while ferrying my baby to my Mother place at the cross junction of Mandai Road and Sembawang Road. The light already turned red for a good 3 to 5sec and she still rush OUT!!!! These are the scums that cause major accident on the road! Very similar to the Ferrari case! Luckily i saw the bikes stop and I stop immediately, my view was blocked by the bikes and din't know some idiot would rush out. Next time better wait for a while before moving off from traffic light! 8. Anyone has any idea where can I get this?
  9. Seriously the TP should interview this GT7774R driver. https://www.facebook.com/JBTALKS.CC?ref=stream&hc_location=stream#!/photo.php?v=10152532676330166&set=vb.204917265165&type=2&theater Sorry repost https://fbexternal-a.akamaihd.net/safe_image.php?d=AQDYFExhR588qXDH&url=https%3A%2F%
  10. Just curious, do our TP stop Malaysian bikes and cars who have committed traffic offences such as speeding or beating red light offences at our immigration? Or do they just waive off any fines against foreign vehicles?
  11. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efw5UiKumQISanta Claus might have his eight reindeer – or nine, when it's foggy – to help him deliver presents in all parts of the world, but in southern California, it looks like he's traded up from Dasher, Dancer, Prancer and company to BMW, Yamaha and Ducati. RNickeyMouse is usually the place to check out spectacular motorcycle crashes on video along LA's Mulholland Drive, but a recent video caught a trio of Santas carving up the iconic, twisty road. The three Santas are together, riding what appears to be a BMW S1000RR, Yamaha R1 and a hard-to-tell custom bike that could be a Ducati 1098. The video also catches a bonus Santa riding solo on another S1000RR. Happy Christmas to all, and to all cool bikes!
  12. Video: http://www.razor.tv/video/535694 You have heard of dashboard cameras in cars. Now, it is the turn of the bicycle-cam. Bikes fitted with video-recording devices are becoming an increasingly common sight on Singapore's roads. Riders use them to gather evidence if they get into an accident
  13. http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/S...ory_825964.html The National Parks Board's controversial purchase of 26 foldable Brompton bikes had been brought to the attention of graft investigators, the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau. In response to queries, the Ministry of National Development told The Straits Times on Wednesday afternoon: 'MND confirms that it has reported the matter to the CPIB.' Earlier, on Tuesday night, the ministry said it had suspended its assistant director of the Park Connector Network, Mr Bernard Lim, from duty. It also said that its minister, Mr Khaw Boon Wan, had told a ministry internal audit team to work with NParks to review the purchase of the bicycles last month.

    JB BIKES

Do anyone of you think we should urge LTA to ban these bikes on Singapore roadsif not at least on the expressways? They are a nuisance and reckless. I think we should have speed bumps on lane dividers too
  20. Saw this car moving and stopping, moving and stopping at my car park checking cars which park at red lots yesterday. Saw two guys inside and I was wondering what they were doing. To my surprise, they were carpark wardens, checking on car which park on red lots. Nowaday, no need walk liao, all sit inside the car. These people must be earning big bucks, can drive car issueing parking fines. So guy, if you do not live at the block, do not park at red lot.
  21. I have a friend who work in the hospital who told me this incidient of a 21 year old who is paralyzed due to major injury to the spine. He is relaying on a machine to stay alive. He cant talk, he cant move ...poor parents only can stare as he look back, being the only son they are very unwilling to unplung him from the machine , still hoping for a glimpse of hope for him to recover. Previously he was involved in an accident as he was flung aside when a lorry hitted him from behind. His parents had stopped him from getting M/Bike licence as they know , he will definitely get a bike after gottn his licence. They had advice him to go for car licence and willing to sponser him 50/50 when it comes to getting a car. He refused. Very typical case of teenager wanting to own his own transport after getting licence. I have previously chatted with a few friends who own bikes for the reason why they choose it to be their source of transport and not a car???? Upon collation of the given reasons, the only reasonable and most logic reason given is "CHEAP" transport. I mean isnt ones life worth the money spent for a car???? Seeing bikers riding in the rain also have me thinking. No matter kana bang or you bang against anything, the damage done will be far more disastrous . Perhaps fellow road users here esp bikers can share with me why they choose to travel in a bike , having risk every ounce of their lifespan within the range of the lion's mouth ?????? One think for sure, I will never allow my daugther or son to own a bike. Unless he/she has a very strong reason of convincing me. I doubt so.....
  22. Hi, Anyone knows is bike rack with mountain bikes mounted allow to pass the SGP custom? When coming back SGP custom, the officer will normally ask you to open the boot for check but are they going to request the bikes to be dismounted for boot checking? Thinking of doing biking at mountainous fruit farm trail at Batu Pahat.
