  9. Singapore's Central Business District, new Marina Bay Downtown and its future southern waterfront district may be linked by an extensive underground road network beyond 2030. SINGAPORE'S Central Business District, new Marina Bay Downtown and its future southern waterfront district may be linked by an extensive underground road network beyond 2030. The plan being studied by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) will see traffic zipping about unobtrusively beneath the surface in a series of subterranean ring roads. Such roads, which free up surface space and improve the liveability of urban areas, are found in cities such as Brussels, Stockholm, Madrid, Paris, Hamburg and Boston. Singapore's plan is seen as part of a larger one to accommodate a growing population, and it dates back to the 1980s. Then in 1996, the LTA envisioned 30km of two- to four-lane roads forming a pair of concentric rings under the city centre. It revisited the idea in the recently released 2013 Land Transport Masterplan, but added that the so-called Singapore Underground Road System (Surs) will now be more extensive. "We are now studying how Surs can serve new developments in the Marina Bay area and the new southern waterfront city that will extend from Keppel Channel to Pasir Panjang Terminal," a spokesman said. But until exact development plans for these two districts are clearer, he said, the scale and alignment of the underground roads remain conceptual. Experts said going underground is inevitable. Dr Park Byung Joon, head of the urban transport management programme at SIM University, said intense development is expected for the new downtown areas. Thus, building roads on the surface "may not be desirable due to the limited supply of land". Elevated roads may also mar the visual appeal and perceived prestige of a district, he said. Noise is another consideration. "The only option left is an underground road network," he said. He noted that it will be very expensive to build, but the benefits may be justifiable. Observers said the long gestation of such a network - at least 50 years from concept to implementation - held a high cost, as many areas in the city had to be "safeguarded". The term refers to reserving space for a major infrastructure project to avoid conflicting demands in the future. But retired traffic engineer Joseph Yee, 68, who was involved in early Surs studies, said: "The cost of not safeguarding is higher." Safeguarding ensures that property acquisition is kept to a minimum, for instance. Going underground is not entirely new to Singapore. The 12km Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway, which opened in 2008, is largely underground. The Marina Coastal Expressway, slated to open by the year end, is the first to have a stretch going under the seabed. 10. An additional station will be built between Yishun and Sembawang on the North-South Line, and it will be known as Canberra station, said Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew on Friday (June 27). He said the feasibility study has been completed, and the Land Transport Authority will provide more details on it later. Mr Lui was speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Thomson Line, which will be opened in three phases in 2019, 2020 and 2021. When fully opened, the line will bring an additional 60 per cent capacity to the North-South corridor, he said. When fully completed in 2021, the Thomson Line will have 22 stations, including six interchanges. The line will see a projected daily ridership of about 400,000 commuters, and will serve several housing estates in the north and central areas – including Woodlands, Sin Ming, Thomson and Kim Seng – and connect them to the city and the rest of the MRT network. The 30km-long line will also be eventually linked to Johor Bahru in Malaysia, he said. Apart from the new line, Mr Lui also spoke about the planned expansions to the existing rail network – the West Loop of the Punggol LRT, which will open on Sunday (June 29); the North-South Line Extension, which will open later this year; the Tuas West Extension, which will open in 2016; and the Downtown Line, which will be fully opened in 2017. 13. Someone asked about Honda Fits, I have this baby fitted in one of my cars The base is a Honda L15 as fitted to Honda Fit but these ones are race built and supplied with various mods by TODA racing Japan for racing teams http://www.todaracingusa.com/topics/race_engines.asp Shifting at 7000RPM and spending most of its life between 6-7k the built engine is able to cope with long periods of high revs and race abuse. and given the short single box exhaust she sounds a heck of a lot better than any honda fit ever did! lol In fact she sounds like a rocket! :) kicks out (wait for it)........115db!! and naturally performance wise theres no comparison lol The intake sound is also quite impressive - see the intake cone.

  18. For the past five years, I have being using wireless to surf internet in my home. All my laptops, ipads, desktop computer are able to wirelessly link up to my router to connect to the internet. One week ago my work horse desktop computer conked out, smoke coming out. This old slim line, with slot in DVD drive, Acer computer was running on vista. It has built in wireless network, similar to laptops, there is no visible external antenne. I made a big mistake today, in buying a new desktop computer that did not come with a built in wireless network. Acer, model ASX1900. As it was on promotion at challenger for just $599. I spent the whole day trying to figure out where the fark is the wireless network and how to turn it on to connect to my wireless router. Only after trying for five hours, doing reseqrch on the internet, then i realised that this computer does not come with wireless network, it comes only with a base-T Lan network. Another fark....this particular model ASX1900 is like very rare and only few website got review. Somemore my core duo is outdated E5700, while the website all reviews newer ASX1900 with newer e6600 processors. Blardy hell....l always thought nowadays computers sure come with wireless network capability. All laptops got wireless built in, so i assume wireless is standard in all computers nowadays!! Why desktop got standard wireless built in? Anyone tell me which model of desktop on the market has the built in wireless capability, at reasonable price? Tomorrow i am going to get a USB wireless network adaptor.....haiz......stupid me...Ass U Me!!
  19. this is not news but when i read it, I dont understand what it means? same chasis? same engine? what is "platform"? Gurus please explain!
  20. If you are a car nut, you would know the best place to be this week is in Paris, or more specifically the Pasris motor show. Any car nut worth their salt will tell you one of the most exiciting part of any car show is the revealing of new, future, & ultra cool concept cars. While one expect one of the Italian & German Marques to steal the show, athough the honor of the coolest concept & powertrain (while we are at it) must surely go to the big cat from Coventry, a small town in the middle of England. Source: Autoblog Jaguar cx75 concept From autoblog: Yesterday's big surprise at the Paris Motor Show was the range-extended electric supercar from Jaguar, the C-X75 Concept. Built to celebrate the marque's 75th anniversary, the concept looks forward to the future while honoring Jaguar's heritage and design. Featuring four electric motors producing 195 horsepower at each wheel, along with two micro-gas turbines that
  21. hi all, i am driving kia sorento and wonder whether the original amp they provided us able to install with aftermarket HU. i do not wish to spend money on additional amp n woofer. is it true some cars have their own connectors that will not fit aftermarket brands n thus need to bypass the amp n connect the speakers to HU? talked to 1 of the staff and told me if different then need to bypass. i do not wish to be smoked as i cant even see how my amp looks like. it will be a waste if my original small woofer in the car also cannot use if i chg the HU
  22. Hello, I'm trying to look for a built-in wine chiller and place under the counter top. Capacity around 25 bottles. Some in the market are semi-conductor cooling which is not suitable to use in Singapore due to high ambient temperature. Compressor type should be used. Most I can find are freestanding type which is not suitable for built-in purpose (poor ventilation) Those buit-in type I can find are just too wide to fit. This photo here shows something I'm looking for, slim and just nice to fit, and you can see vents at the bottom. Does anyone have this at home or knows where I can source locally?
