  2. For those who like to take to the social media and air your displeasure whenever you encountered some annoying situation, is that all you can do? Let me introduce you to this short video... Please pause the video before the 0:50 mark, and think of what would you do if you face a similar situation as this guy... "Every night I would get an alert from my driveway security camera, and at first I was a bit annoyed, but then I found myself looking forward to the evening alert. And then inspiration struck, in the form of my wife giving me this great idea. What transpired has turned into the best part of an otherwise dreary pandemic summer," wrote CanyonChasers on his YouTube post. So what was his solution? Maybe you have already seen the whole video clip, but here's what he did, which has also won him a lot of praises from his neighbors and netizens. He painted a race track on his driveway with chalk so that the kid could follow and ride through it. Every time it rain and the "track" got washed off, he would paint a new and more elaborate one. He even started to put words of encouragement on it. The track soon proved to be very popular, attracting even adults to test their riding skill... The news and video eventually reach a senior executive at NBC, who reached out to both the YouTuber and the kid to give them NASCAR merchandise from official drivers. Talk about a happy ending for all! So the next time when an unpleasant situation pops up, give yourself a little time to think if you can transform your problem into something better, maybe not as interesting or entertaining as what this guy did, but at least something which could have save your day.

  4. My primary school teachers had a lot of creative punishments for students who misbehaved. 1 punishment was progressive standing. If you misbehaved once, you had to stand next to your desk. If you misbehaved again , you stood on the chair. If you misbehaved yet again, you had to stand on the table. Good luck if your seat is right below the fan. Another punishment for serial misbehavers was banishment to the corridor. As the name implies, you moved your desk and chair to the corridor for the duration of a lesson. There was a male teacher who would improvise punishments. One time he told me to place my hands together, overlapping the fingers from both hands. I blur blur followed his orders and the next thing I knew, he whacked my fingers with his ruler. Did you people also endure such creative punishments while you were schooling? I wonder if any teacher still dares to try such stunts nowadays.
  5. CREATIVE Technology, the home-grown tech firm, has slashed 2,700 jobs, or almost half its total workforce, in the last fiscal year as falling demand for its products continues to hit its bottom line. Jobs cuts were made across the board, but the bulk was in manufacturing, due to the sale of its Malaysian plant in July 2007. The Straits Times estimates that up to 2,200 jobs have been eliminated as a result of that closure. This came to light in the company's annual report filed with the Singapore Exchange on Wednesday. In the report, Creative said it had about 3,100 full-time workers as at June 30 last year, or 47 per cent fewer than the 5,800 employed a year earlier. In the previous year, Creative had cut headcount by about 800 from 6,600. A Creative spokesman said: 'The bulk of the reduction in the worldwide workforce was due to the sale of Cubic Electronics, the manufacturing subsidiary of Creative in Malaysia, in July 2007.' Creative sold an 80.1 per cent stake in the Malaysian facility for US$6.9 million (S$10.1 million) to a group of third-party investors as part of a move to streamline and improve its operational efficiency. Other staff cuts were made, with about 250 coming from sales, marketing and customer support, about 180 from administrative and other areas and fewer than 50 from research and development (R&D). Besides Asia, headcount was also significantly reduced in the Americas region, from about 640 to 280. The spokesman said there had been no 'significant change' in headcount in Singapore, where Creative has its corporate headquarters and a large part of its R&D operations. 'We are still looking to hire more R&D engineers,' the spokesman said. The company employs about 1,100 staff in R&D across the US, Britain and China, in addition to Singapore. Creative had net losses of US$19.7 million for the year ended June 30, 2008. The company, which makes MP3 players and speakers, has been hit by slowing sales of its products due to the worsening economic situation and tough competition. Sales for the three months ended Sept30 were US$141.2 million, down from US$184.6 million for the same period a year before. Half of Creative's sales came from Europe, while the Americas and Asia made up the rest almost evenly. In the report, Creative said it faces 'intense competition from a large number of established companies and emerging companies'. Sales of electronic products have slumped as the economic slowdown forces consumers to cut back on spending, leading companies like Chartered Semiconductor and Philips Electronics to announce job cuts in recent months. Creative suffered a net loss of US$32.2 million in the first quarter ended Sept 30 to follow a net loss of US$31.7 million in the three months before that. 'We will continue to reduce operating expenses as we target to reduce our losses in the uncertain market environment ahead,' president and chief operating officer of Creative Labs Craig McHugh said in October. 10. MOTOR companies are coming up with innovative ways to entice car buyers put off by the recent cooling measures. These range from a leasing deal that allows customers to drive away with a new Mercedes-Benz E200 with no downpayment to a buyback scheme that lets them own a Porsche Panamera for just $788 a month. The arrangements are offered mainly by companies selling premium and luxury brands, as these are the ones most affected by the cooling measures. In February, the Government restricted most car loans to 60 per cent of the purchase price - compared with up to 100 per cent previously - and imposed a tiered taxation system placing the heaviest burden on luxury vehicles. 14. Was at Challenger this morning and I saw the Creative Ziio on the shelf. It is a 7 inch android-based tablet and is retailing at ~S$360. There should be a 10 inch one too (but not too sure of the price). Has anyone bought it? Looks quite good. Very tempted to buy as the price is so much cheaper than Ipad and Galaxy tab. Appreciate your sharing of experience, thanks.

  19. Taken from Wired Blog Network at http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2008/04/daniel_k-who-fi.html Daniel_K, Who Fixed Creative's Broken Vista Drivers, Speaks Out By Rob Beschizza April 01, 2008 | 11:13:33 AMCategories: Audio Daniel_K, the Creative Labs fan who fixed the company's broken Vista sound card drivers only to be threatened by the corporate brass, just e-mailed with his side of the story. "My name is Daniel Kawakami and I'm Brazilian," he writes. "I'm NOT a cracker, a hacker, just an enthusiast modder with basic assembly knowledge and very persistent." Kawakami's expertise allowed him to enable advanced features in sound cards that Creative advertised as Vista-compatible, but which did not perform as well under that operating system as they do under Windows XP. After tolerating the distribution of his unofficial drivers for a time, Creative's vice president of corporate communications, Phil O'Shaughnessy, ultimately asked him to stop, and accused him of "stealing their goods." O'Shaughnessy also wrote that whether or not it cripples its Vista drivers is a "business decision that only we have the right to make." The rest of Kawakami's e-mail follows, verbatim, after the jump.
  20. ST 2 April 2008 HOME-GROWN tech giant Creative has found itself in the middle of an online firestorm after it threatened an American user who modified drivers for its Sound Blaster sound cards. The user, known only by his online moniker, Daniel-K, had modified drivers - software that allows hardware devices to function on a computer - to allow the Sound Blaster Audigy cards to be used with Microsoft's Vista operating system. Claiming the cards had limited functionality on Vista, he set about modifying them and distributing them online and asking for donations in return. But last Friday, Mr Phil O'Shaughnessy, who is the vice-president (corporate communications) of Creative Labs, which is based in the United States, posted a public warning to Daniel-K on the company's official forum. Mr O'Shaughnessy warned Daniel-K to stop distributing the modified drivers, and accused him of infringing Creative's intellectual property rights. He also warned him to stop soliciting donations, saying that by doing so, Daniel-K was 'profiting from something that you do not own'. News of the warning soon surfaced on several websites in the United States and elsewhere, including local forum Hardwarezone, and sparked a huge backlash against Creative on the Internet. The initial warning itself attracted more than 2,000 comments, with many threatening a boycott of Creative's products. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of posts on the subject have cropped up worldwide. Many users of the modified drivers are saying they did so because, according to them, the Audigy sound card's features are not fully compatible with Vista: When paired with Creative's drivers, only their basic features are available. But when used with the modified drivers, advanced audio features like Dolby Digital and THX, which enable users to hear realistic surround- sound in movies, are unlocked and become available. Creative takes issue with this. In his posting, Mr O'Shaughnessy said that if the company chooses to unlock features with some cards and not with others, it is a 'business decision that only we have the right to make'. But users retort that since the packaging for the cards states that they are 'Vista-compatible', they expect drivers with a full list of functions when used with the operating system. Others have jumped into the fray and are distributing the modified drivers on file-sharing sites like BitTorrent - for free. Some Singapore netizens have also expressed anger at Creative, but many others are also defending the company because it is a home-grown icon. User desertengineer wrote on the Hardwarezone forum: 'While Daniel-K probably didn't do it with ill intent, asking for money while doing it is a big no-no, and puts Creative in an awkward position. Sometimes they have to respond.' Creative Singapore declined to comment, while there was no response from its US office. Several users have noted that in the online world, where respect for intellectual property rights is frequently disregarded, the flaming of Creative is no surprise. Apple Computer, for example, was attacked by numerous users last year after it threatened that a software update would render illegally hacked versions of its wildly popular iPhone useless. But legal experts have criticised such attacks by users. In a New York Times report last September on the threats against Apple, assistant dean Noah Funderburg of the University of Alabama's School of Law said: 'We have a free marketplace. 'Buy a product, including using it on the terms accompanying the purchase, or don't buy it. And learn to live with not always getting everything you want.' CROSSING THE LINE 'While Daniel-K probably didn't do it with ill intent, asking for money while doing it is a big no-no, and puts Creative in an awkward position. Sometimes they have to respond.' DESERTENGINEER, a user on the Hardwarezone forum, referring to the American user who modified drivers for Creative's Sound Blaster sound cards
