  1. Just saw this article by a foreign GTA owner. thought I'd post it Do Share your experiences My wife took the GTA to the shops and on a few errand runs today while I moved people in the bus. She said after spending a day with it that some unusual behaviour came her way: At junctions she was let out immediately where she'd usually end up stuck and waiting a long while. In one case, the guy who let her out waved and said Thank You to her. She found that going along dual carriageways, cars in front veritably jumped to get out of the way. In M and S car park, as she was prowling about trying to find a parking space, a fella waved at her as he walked towards the car park and said he was going and she could follow him back to the space he was about to vacate. Which she did. She also said that when she started it (She tends to step on the gas when starting cars as the bus needs this to start at all) to come out of M and S a large crowd of teenage yoofs nearby cheered, smiled and waved at her. She commented that people smiled at her and she received a number of thumbs up and waves as she prowled out and when stopped in traffic she found she was being glanced at a lot. She was quite confused by it all. She actually praised The Beast which is rare as I usually get more negative comments involving 'waste of time and money' and 'haven't you got anything more useful to do?' Type comments in reference to the GTA. I was pleasantly surprised and felt the need to share. Do any of the assembled male GTAists find their ladyfolk are treated differently in a GTA than in a more day to day car. Or indeed visa-versa?
  2. I entered Johor thru Tanjong Kupang on 13 Feb, i remembered I did tap my TnG card at the immigration booth. But when I check my TnG card account now, there is no RM20 transaction, though all the toll charges for that day was reflected in my account. So is the road charge still in effect or just waived for CNY period ? Anyone notice the same?
  3. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ting_Hai_effect Everytime when Adam Cheng's show is broadcast, I always have a bad feeling that market is going to tank. Somehow it reinforce my pessimism over the markets 1-2 months ago. And it is proven true again. That snooker show (King of Snooker) has just barely broadcasted a month in SG and everything goes south.
  4. Hi all, I've noticed that different petrol (similiar grade) caused the fuel guage to have different fuel consumption pattern. For example, 1) Shell 95; fuel level dropped fastest between 1/2 and 1/4 mark. Earlier from Full to 1/2 mark the drop is rather slowly. 2) Mobil 95; fuel level dropped fastest between 3/4 and 1/2 mark. Later the drop will be more gradual and evenly. 3) SPC 95; the level drop fastest around 1/2 mark, the rest rather constantly. 4) Caltex...have not tried it yet. Although I've experienced different fuel consumption pattern as witness from the fuel guage, but overall fuel consumption among the various brand is almost the same, minimal difference. Meaning; a full tank of Shell, or Mobil or SPC will given me around the same mileage travelled until the fuel guage empty light comes on. This difference in fuel consumption pattern (as observed from fuel guage) is repeatable, meaning its not a one time observation, whenever I use that particular brand the pattern appear again. Also travelling distance, timing and route is same, but its just that different petrol brand caused the fuel guage to give different reading (or different consumption rate?). Its not about the fuel tank profile/shape either, otherwise different brand will still give the same FC pattern, right? I've check with one of my colleague, and he had observed the same findings... So, just curious, have you noticed any difference in your fuel guage consumption reading when using different brand?
  5. ST Forum Jul 15, 2011 Price hike ripple effect: A personal experience IN HIS letter on Wednesday, Mr Edward Teo said that when a basic necessity such as public transport attracts a fare hike, there will soon be a chain effect of other increases ("Worry over fare hike ripple"). I find this to be true. For instance, the last time I complained and asked my neighbourhood hawker why she increased her food prices, she pointed to the rise in train fares. Once hawkers increase their prices, they will not reduce them, even when their costs go down. This is not the right time for public transport companies to chalk up higher profits, especially when we are still struggling with high inflation. Joan Chng (Madam)
  6. @jamesc will miss the buddy system dearly. SINGAPORE ARMED FORCES SCRAPS BUDDY SYSTEM WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT http://www.allsingaporestuff.com/article/singapore-armed-forces-scraps-buddy-system-immediate-effect by Wan Dao Liao, Straight Times SINGAPORE - Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) has announced it has removed the "buddy system" from its combat doctrine with effect from today (10 July). In a press statement to the media, SAF spokesperson reiterated they are constantly reviewing its training procedures to ensure the SAF is "keeping up with the times". The "buddy system" is a traditional military doctrine which requires individual soldiers to function in pairs during training and operations to ensure safety and accountability. "The SAF is concerned that the buddy system which requires individual soldiers to be devoted to another soldier interferes with their mental development," spokesperson Brigadier-General Yee Ker Xing replied in a e-mail interview, " We would like our conscript soldiers lead a healthy lifestyle that allows them to transit normally into civilian life after they completed their mandatory service." The latest move by SAF coincides with National Library Board's removal of three children books which were criticised by pro-family groups as "anti-family" and "pro-gay". One of the books, "And Tango Makes Three" is based on a true story that tells the story of a pair of gay penguins which incubated a young bird and regarded it as their offspring. "Finally the army wake up already!" cheered Lance Corporal Hock Kian Peng, "My instructor always tell me must eat, sleep and shower with my buddy you know! Then they forced us to sleep together in a small tent in field camp for 7 days you know! So gay!" However, Brigader-General Yee declined to revealed the upcoming changes to the training doctrine, citing operational concerns. "Maybe army should also stop telling me my rifle is my wife lah!", Lance Corporal Hock added, "I look at my rifle cannot stim, how to marry? how to buy hdb then claim baby bonus, you tell me? PAP give money you don't take meh? Siao." - See more at: http://www.allsingaporestuff.com/article/singapore-armed-forces-scraps-buddy-system-immediate-effect#sthash.00cH0DEW.dpuf
  7. Good to see who esle will be affected with the CM1 for cars. Grooming and paintworks mentioned so far SINGAPORE: Motor firms Channel NewsAsia spoke with said recent loan curbs on car purchases are having negative ripple effects on some vehicle-related services. They said this effect is likely to be more pronounced, with a temporary reprieve on borrowing limits for used car dealers ending on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the loan curbs set by authorities in February will return in full force. Used car dealers cleared much of their old stock in the 60-day reprieve period given by authorities, where people could take up to 100-per cent loans for car purchases. It applied to some 7,000 second-hand vehicles, with over 4,800 sold. Car dealers have been saying second-hand luxury vehicles are difficult to sell, even if buyers can take up full loans to buy them. Such cars simply do not suit the needs of the many budget-conscious people looking for cheaper, second-hand buys. With the reprieve period over, the maximum borrowing limit is 60 per cent of the purchase price. Dealers said the high down-payment needed to get a vehicle is causing the new supply of used cars for sale to shrink. Owners are likely to hold on to their old rides since conditions for getting a new one are tough. Mike Wee, owner of Mayfair Motoring, said: "People will maintain their car, drive their car until almost the end, until the car really needs to (be scrapped). Then probably they will change to another car." Fewer used cars for sale also means less need for some vehicle-related services. Kenson Goh, sales executive at Car Design, said: "The spray-painting and the car-grooming sector will be affected. Because basically we can't move our old stock, we aren't able to bring in new stock. So therefore we're unable to send over new stock over to the spray-painting or car-grooming companies." Empty shop spaces at the Automobile Megamart in eastern Singapore showed how firms have downsized operations. Motorviva sells commercial vehicles, which are not hit by loan curbs. It has taken over a prime spot at Automobile Megamart, vacated by a used car dealer. Joe Quah, assistant sales manager at Motorviva, said: "The car loan curb - I think all of us know that it has hit the market quite badly. So I think that gives us opportunities to find this very good location which we have always wanted." With business slowing, car dealers said rental rates at Automobile Megamart have fallen about 40 per cent. - CNA/xq

  10. STOMPer Jamin was at Boon Lay MRT station at 8am this morning when she saw a passenger fall down the escalator. This caused a domino effect, as other commuters on the escalator were knocked over as well. Said the STOMPer: "This incident happened on 19th March at around 8am at Boon Lay MRT. "Many passengers were taking the escalator to the MRT platform when a passenger fell and rolled down the escalator. "This caused a domino effect and those behind him fell too. "The escalator was stopped and MRT staff came to render assistance. "The infrastructure in Singapore is unable to support the rate in which the population is growing."
  11. Anyone can explain more on what is meaning of tall gear or short gear ratio and how it affects fc & acceleration? I read some saying that tall gear is good for fc but bad for acceleration?
  12. There was a discussion here last week why HDB only summon him $50 instead of $400. Online forum has its positive effect! Driver parks at space for disabled to protest lack of lots TO DRIVE home his point to HDB that there is a shortage of parking spaces in his area for residents, a man resorted to hogging a disabled parking lot in the estate, according to The Straits Times (ST). Businessman Yew Chee Heng has parked his white BMW in the handicap lot for the past two months even though he does not have a handicap label. The 34-year-old said he has no place to park in the Bukit Purmei estate every night and he did it because the parking problem has been there since he moved in. Checks by ST showed that he had seven unpaid summonses issued between March 16 and April 1, each amounting to a fine of $50. But the man has not approached his MP or HDB about the parking crunch because he is afraid that they would not hear him out. He explained to ST that they might not listen to him because he is not 'an educated person' and he has a criminal record. According to the report, his 'protests' first started back in 2006 when he just moved into the area. Then, he was driving a Toyota Mark X and he would park along the double yellow lines or in the handicap lot whenever he couldn't find a lot. Mr Yew claimed he has since incurred over $3,000 in fines for such behaviour. Is he right? The report said residents living in Blocks 112 to 115 in Bukit Purmei Road agreed that there is a lack of parking lots. One housewife said the spaces around Block 115 are filled up by 9pm and it is impossible to find a lot nearby. But the interviewed residents also disagreed with Mr Yew's actions. Another housewife S. Wong, 50, said the actions were selfish. 'Everyone faces the same problem, not just him, but he shouldn't park at the handicap lot,' she told ST. Since the first report that came out on Sunday, Mr Yew has paid all the fines for his parking offences. According to a HDB spokesman, they issued him a higher fine of $400 for his most recent offence on Sunday, the report said. The report added that Mr Yew has stopped parking illegally since Sunday - not because he is remorseful. On the contrary he stopped because his wife was angry with him after photographs of her and their children were discovered and posted on online forums, where they have been the subjects of online abuse.
  13. Many in this forum or elsewhere (as long as you live in Singapore) are discussing about the spike in COE premium over the last one year. I aim to provide a reality check on COE and car population control and well as how public transport can play a part in the overall transportation system and cost. First the COE demand and supply situation. Please look to year 2009 March bidding. There were 3682 COE available (for month of March) for 1.6l and below cars. COE price was $3864 and $3162. That was the time whereby all in Singapore who wants to buy a car and think that they can afford it and willing to pay for it at the OMV plus taxes plus dealer profit plus $3800 did so. That was the time whereby almost all demand were fulfilled by supply. Coming back to present, if we were to satisfy all demand for new cars (1.6l and below) in current economic climate, the COE available numbers could by more than double that of March 2009, that works out to be ~8000 new 1.6l and below cars a month. Compared to the 1300 available COEs available for december, this works out to 6700 new car owners want to be who cannot fufill their dreams of owning a new car. This is how COE works. How do you get the 1300 who are willing to pay $50k for a COE to work with the 6700 who doesn't want to pay $50k to work together so that somehow a newly defined batch (be it through balloting or means testing or lottery) of 1300 gets their COE at $1? You will need to issue 8000 new COEs to enable all 8000 new cars owners wannabe to get their COE at $1. Think about it, COE works by limiting the number of new cars allowed on the roads according to what the LTA wants. It taxes the car owners for wanting a new car. This method works for car population control. We should however be asking how we can maximise the returns on the taxes that we collect from new car owners. How to make public transport better such that those who are deprived of car ownership because being less well-off or less willing to pay taxes do not suffer disproportionate disadvantage from not owning private transportation. Secondly, the train system can play a very deciding role in determining the private car ownership and usage situation in Singapore. I think this thread title is a good platform for everyone to discuss about car ownership or the lack thereof. This is my second posting in this thread regarding how our train infrastructure should be before motorist starts giving up their private transport on weekdays. The public transport frequency, comfortable load carrying capacity and coverage (trains) must be improved on tremendously. COE can be as high as $200 or $500K. Singaporeans will not care if the public transport is affordable, comfortable, punctual and has extensive coverage. Taxes from COE should be used to build public transport infrastructure to a truly first class status. The circle line is 8 years late. The east to north line (Changi/Pasir Ris/Tampines to Yishun/Woodlands) should have been completed in 2009. The second east west line should have started work in should be completed in 2012. The second North-South line should be completed in 2014. A third North-South Circle line should be in planning and work to start in 2012. Jurong Island and Tuas should have been served by the MRT line in 2007. Palau Bin and Tekong MRT station should have been completed in October 2010. Train carrying capacity can be increased by a double deck MRT track that runs express service from major MRT stations, example Tampines to Tuas stopping only at Tampines, Payer Lebar, Raffles Place, Buona Vista, Jurong East, Boonlay and Tuas. The double deck MRT system should have been ready in 2010. Planned tracked should have 4 track rail to enable express trains. LRT should serve every MRT station to bring commuters to within 300m of 95% of residential high-rise and 500m of offices and other residential buildings. A system like the above serves a population of 6.5million comfortable with the desirable effect of such extensive rail system is that most Singaporeans would prefer to travel on public transport and the number of cars on the road can be drastically reduced through even further cuts on issuance of COE.
  14. Dear All, do you see such thing? it is also call iridesence. is it normal? is it due to water after installation of the film? i saw some older car oso have this effect. Thanks!

  18. Not sure what you call them, but there is a idle sensor which if faulty can have an effect on the AT. My car was recently diagnoise with that. And the mech told me, I was fortunately if not have to change another sensor for the AT. However, after the change discovered that idling not ideal cos can rise above the normal previously. And today the gears suddenly jerk when moving off. Got a fright. The most pressing issue is mechanic is missing prolly due to illiness. Was suppose to have him check on the problem after the idle sensor was replaced cos he suspected the wires could be faulty as well. I hope the mech was not pulling a fast one as his business oso not too fantastic recently. I am worried that car cant last the 10yrs..... All things change after last servicing with change in EO to 30wt and renewal of ATF. Any comments on mech's assumption? As may have to go to other mech if current is still missing.
  19. GTA IV in Hot Water in Thailand Distributor in Far East calls for ban following murder incident. by Alex Simmons, IGN UK From: http://ps3.ign.com/articles/896/896111p1.html UK, August 4, 2008 - The distribution of Grand Theft Auto IV in Thailand could be halted following the confession of a teenager who claimed he robbed and murdered a taxi driver while trying to recreate a scene from the game. According to Reuters, Thai game distributor New Era Interactive Media has requested that shops pull the game from their shelves following the incident, with the company offering to replacement it with other games should they co-operate. An 18-year-old high school student is in custody after Thai police arrested him on Saturday night when he was found driving a taxi backwards down a Bangkok street with the wounded cab driver in the backseat. If the teenager is found guilty of robbing and murdering the 54-year-old cabbie they face death by lethal injection. The youth, who has been described as an obsessive player of Grand Theft Auto, apparently confessed to the crime because of the game, with chief police investigator Veeravit Pipattanasak adding: "He said he wanted to find out if it was as easy in real life to rob a taxi as it was in the game." However, according to newspaper reports the suspect admitted he didn't mean to kill the driver but stabbed him to death when he fought back. Whether the ban of the game will be enforced across the whole of Thailand remains to be seen. Rockstar declined to comment on either the ban or the murder.
  20. When driving fast passed the long and tall vehicles, the crosswind effect will push the car outwards. Is there a way to alleivate this problem without installing bodykit? Please advise. Thank you very much. Regards,

  22. Hi guys, I am just curious to know whether the recent stock market plunge will have any effect on COE premium. Next COE bidding closed on next Wednesday (22/08/07) Please vote and give reason why you think so. Thanks
  23. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I understand that a bored throttle body will improve low-end torque (and therefore increase FC) whilst changing your final drive ratio will improve your high-end torque (and therefore decrease FC). If I were to do these two mods together, what's the final effect? Will I have both improved low- and high-end torque? Or will these be cancelled out? Also, what will happen to my FC? An overall increase, decrease or no change? Thanks!
  24. Hi Guys, A bad habit of mine... I used to put my gear to neutral when i come to a stop at traffic light. When driving auto, I put my gear to "P" when I stop... does it cause any issue: pros and cons?
