  1. It will be available in both Liftback and estate version, while the next generation Passat will be available solely in estate form. For me, I will gladly take this estate variant, preferably in Scout trim (with >270 horsepower, 4x4 drive train, raised height,etc.). This heavily camouflaged prototype was caught testing with Czech registration plates without fake body panels or cladding. The proportions seem largely unchanged with the only notable difference probably being the slightly more sloped roofline. Underneath the skin, the architecture underpinning the new Superb will be an evolution of the MQB platform used by the current model. The production of the new Superb should begin next year at Volkswagen’s plant in Bratislava, Slovakia. In local context, that means end 2024 will be the earliest it will hit our shore.
  2. Look larger and well proportioned. Stay tuned for more info.
  3. Article dated 2001 though Philip Morris Cos. officials in the Czech Republic have been distributing an economic analysis concluding that cigarette consumption isn't a drag on the country's budget, in part because smokers' early deaths help offset medical expenses. The report, commissioned by the cigarette maker and produced by consulting firm Arthur D. Little International, totes up smoking's "positive effects" on national finances, including revenue from excise and other taxes on cigarettes and "health-care cost savings due to early mortality." The premature demise of smokers saved the Czech government between 943 million koruna and 1.19 billion koruna (between $23.8 million and $30.1 million or between 20.3 million euros and 25.7 million euros) on health care, pensions and housing for the elderly in 1999, according to the report. The report also calculates the costs of smoking, such as the expense of caring for sick smokers and people made ill by second-hand smoke as well as income taxes lost when smokers die. Weighing the costs and benefits, the report concludes that in 1999 the government had a net gain of 5.82 billion koruna ($147.1 million) from smoking. Philip Morris said it received the Little report late last year and handed it out recently after complaints from Czech officials that the tobacco industry was saddling the country with huge health-care expenses. "This is an economic-impact study, no more, no less," said Robert Kaplan, a spokesman for Philip Morris's international tobacco unit in Rye Brook, N.Y. "We're not trying to suggest that there would be a benefit to society from the diseases related to smoking." Philip Morris manufactures about 80% of the cigarettes smoked in the Czech Republic. The New York company, which owns a 77.5% stake in a formerly state-owned Czech tobacco enterprise, sells its flagship Marlboro smokes as well as local brands. Measuring the net costs of smoking to societies and governments long has been controversial and difficult. Studies measuring the lifetime health-care costs of smokers, who die sooner but have higher annual medical expenses, have reached conflicting conclusions. Some find that, over their lives, smokers have similar costs to nonsmokers. Others have found that smokers' health-care costs are higher. Gauging the real level of such costs is very difficult, and hard-to-quantify expenses aren't captured in many estimates. Smokers, for example, recover more slowly and are more likely to have complications after surgery for unrelated problems, increasing the cost of caring for them. Tobacco-control experts attacked the Czech report. "Is there any other company that would boast about making money for the public treasury by killing its customers? I can't think of one," said Kenneth Warner, an economist at the University of Michigan's school of public health. Dr. Warner said the study appeared to be seriously flawed because, among other things, it fails to consider what the economic impact would be if smokers stopped buying cigarettes and spent their money on other goods instead. Eva Kralikova, a physician and epidemiologist at Charles University in Prague, said the report also "very much underestimated" the costs of medical care for people suffering from smoking-related diseases. Dr. Kralikova said lung cancer and other illnesses caused by tobacco use account for about 20% of all deaths in the Czech Republic, killing about 23,000 people a year. And she said the number of illnesses and deaths is expected to mount, as is the expense of medical treatment, as smokers age.
  4. While car makers like PSA Peugeot, Citroen and Opel are announcing job cuts and factory shutdown due to declining sales, Skoda appears to buck the trend. The year-to-date sales of the Czech car maker grew by 6.9% between January to November. Absolute figure is about 873,000 units. For the month of November, they posted an increase of 3.8% in their worldwide deliveries due to growth in China, India, Russia and Europe. "Once again, we increased our deliveries even though markets were difficult," said Werner Eichhorn,
  5. After showing bits and pieces of the 2013 Skoda Octavia, the Czech automaker has finally revealed the new sedan in one piece. Anyone familiar with new Skoda Rapid will instantly recognise the new model as a skoda even with the logo covered. It is 90mm longer and 45mm wider than its predecessor and rides on a wheelbase that is 108mm longer. The MK3 Skoda has an evolutionary design whose side profile reminds me of the B5.5 Passat while the tail light design resembles those of the C6 Audi A6. Although the design elements are not new, the whole package comes across as a solidly put-together sedan that would do the VW Group proud. The interior has a redesigned three-spoke steering wheel together with a new gear stick. Panorama glass roof is available on the option list. The Octavia also has the best-in-class cargo capacity of 590 liters. Nine engines will be offered on the new Octavia but Skoda only confirmed two of them at the moment. They are the 1.8-litre TSI with 179bhp and the 1.6-litre TDI with 110bhp. All engines will be mated to a DSG transmission.
  6. The next generation Skoda Octavia has been spied almost naked in this latest spy video of the new Czech mid-sized sedan. As evident from the video, the Mk3 Octavia stays close to the general design of Skoda cars seen in the Mk2 version and the new Rapid sedan. The new model adopts a smaller grille and more angular head lamp design. The new Octavia will be larger than the outgoing model to distant itself from the Rapid. It will also be more upmarket. The new model will be underpinned by VW
  7. [extract] The once ailing Czech automaker is turning out to be a solid investment for the Volkswagen Group as the Czech automaker is breaking one sales record after the other. This is a case whereby a Cantonese would describe as
  8. Came across a website with some jokes. Better take cover first. Disclaimer - Any "sensitive" skoda owner who cannot take jokes please don't continue reading. Its just for the fun of it. Bueh song not my problem. What do you call a skoda with twin exhausts ???? A wheelbarrow. What do you call a skoda driver who say's he has a speeding ticket ???? A Dreamer. You don't have to think up any Skoda Jokes, .........the Skoda is a Joke ! How do you double the value of a Skoda ? Fill the tank ! Why do skodas have a rear wash wipe ? ........To remove the flies that crash into them. There is a big competition at my local pub the first prize is a scoda, ........the second prize is two skodas ! Why do Skoda's have a heated rear window? To keep your hands warm, while you push it. You see the ads that say 'What's behind the new skoda?' It's not really Volkswagen, it's 'People pushing it'! What do you call a Skoda at the the top of a hill ? A miracle. What is the difference between a Skoda and the flu ? You can get rid of the flu ! How do you overtake a Skoda ? Run ! What do you call a car that always wins the Lombard Rally but never appears in the Leader Board ? A Skoda ! I was stopped for speeding in a Skoda, but I was let off due to the Copper(police officer) laughing too much. Volkswagen wants to improve the quality of Skoda cars, so they take the Skoda workers to the Volkswagen plant. The Skoda workers notice that there a big cage with cats inside it. "What's that for?", they ask. "It's for testing the door seals of new cars. In the evening we put a cat into a car, and when the cat is dead in the morning, we know, that the seal is good." One month later, Volkswagen's boss goes to the Skoda plant to see if the quality has improved. Everything seems to be the same as before, but there is a big cage with cat inside it. "What is that?", they ask. "It's for testing new cars. In the evening we put a cat into a car, and when the cat is inside in the morning, we know, that the car is good."
  9. just wondering... is the warranty given for Skodas bought under Czech Auto still valid under new company, Cars & Cars ?

  13. Hi all, I have met the Sales Manager of Czech Auto at a Skoda roadshow recently. I have voiced out to him some of our concerns with regards to CA's level of after-sales service. He is very receptive to our comments and has urged us to consolidate any grievances and highlight to him. I will be keen to oversee this liaision between SOG and CA. I have also asked him whether there is any possibility for prospective buyers to secure a better deal for new Skoda purchases. He told me that it is possible for him to work out something for the new car pricing. However for the freebies, it is purely between the SE and the buyer. If you are aware of any prospective Skoda buyers, I can help you liaise with him. Hopefully they stand to gain a better deal. PM me if you need further info.

  18. My sis drives an Elegance Octavia. A few weeks ago, they sent in their Octavia to Czech Auto for the regular servicing and here's what went wrong: Got a call from Sammo (sp?) and was told that their car met with an accident whilst in the hands of Czech Auto. Upon further probing, my sis was told that the car's windscreen was smashed up. Sammo said that the windscreen was probably hit by a pebble whilst it was being tested. My sis asked the guy who test drove the car after servicing and he said that the car was still in perfect condition when he returned it. Ok. So the windscreen was damaged, Sammo had the cheek to ask my Sis to help him by claiming the damaged under her motor insurance. My sister relented thinking that it would be faster to get the car back as they said that it would take two days to get the windscreen replaced, plus there's no future impact on her insurance premiums. So she agreed and asked for a courtesy car, but they kept on telling her that they were not able to provide her a courtesy car. After much arguing and table banging, they agreed to loan her a van. Gosh! My sister had no choice so she took the van. Two days passed and she got the car back. It drove normal for about one and a half days and then a grinding sound could be heard from the front portion of the car. They again sent it in to Czech Auto and they diagnosed the problem as the wheel bearing being faulty/worn out (1 side). Flabbergasted and fuming, my sister asked that they bear the cost of replacing the faulty bearing. Of course they claimed that it was her fault that the bearing was faulty. They were not even able to tell her upfront how much it would cost for the wheel bearing to be replaced. She had to wait till after several hours before she could find out the cost. I guess it was a tactic to let her cool down first. Anyway, several hours later, they came back to her and quoted her $1,600 for replacing the wheel bearing. And as a gesture of goodwill, they'd bear half the cost and my sister would have to pay the other half. Fuming, my sister took her car to Servotronics, and was told that Czech Auto made a wrong diagnostic; the faulty bearing was on the other side of the car as the one said by Czech Auto. It took about 200 bucks to fix it plus they were able to fix a faulty door lockset which has been faulty for many months, waiting for spare parts arrival at Czech Auto. So be forewarned... Czech Auto the slackers. Please contact me if you want to know more details as to what happened plus perhaps see the tears that were shed. We'll write-off Czech Auto in our list of things existent in this world.
  19. CA has been around more than a year I suppose. And most of us might have some experience with them. Time to poll and feel the sentiments of Skodians on our distributor.

  22. Dropped by the Czech Auto outlet down by Leng Kee today at the spur of the moment to check them out and here's the impressions I was left with: Crowded, as expected, as with any newly-opened place for spending money, shopping centre or otherwise. Neat little showroom with access to the rear where the test vehicles are parked. Model lineup quite like in the days of olde - Fabia 1.4 hatch and sedan, Octavia 1.6 Classic (M), Ambiente (M/A) and 1.8T Elegance (yeah, baby ! ). First impression from staff is friendly and rather impressionable - despite the obviously crowded show space, they were still very much on their feet and on the look out - so very unlike SOME nearby dealer.... While one could attribute this to the operations being new, I hope it continues this way. Initial reaction to showroom was that it was pretty cramped, but after doing the look-around, with the testcar holding area and all that, it didn't feel as bad. Also, it'll probably do fine after the initial hype-driven crowd dies out a couple of weeks (or maybe months) from now. Really wanted to try out the 1.8T (going for a shade below 120k) but figured I'd try my luck in the near future when the staff are less busy. Left with the impression that, despite the overall pricing being less competitive than in the days of olde, with the visibly more aggressive approach to the market (plus, the possible and proper capitalisation of the brandname's hightened awareness in the market) the Skoda marque could end up heavily overshadowing its Seat brethren in the middle to long-term. And maybe even end up nicking some deals from neighbouring Audi and Vee-dub. Which, for some people I know, may not be that bad of a thing. Here's to Czech Auto's success. And, oh, on a side note, the warranty on the Octavia is 2yrs/60, 000kms.
  23. From Shin Min Daily News:
  24. Anyone has any idea when these chaps are commencing operations? I have a few faults with the Fabia and would like to see if the new owners of the distributorship can honour the warranty of my Fabia which is only 1 year old. Damn headache during this interval since there is no agent support! My car already clocked 20,300km liao and will need to do the 20,000km servicing very soon liao! Doesnt pay to stick to the underdogs.
