  1. This thread is set up for discussions of anything technical, features or functions for the 2014 Corolla Altis. It is not for the discussion on the price or cost related issues, comparison with other makes/models and similar irrelevances.
  2. I was reading an interesting article on "things that will disappear from the auto industry by 2030" and my itchy fingers decided to compile a list of discontinued driver features we'll not be seeing soon with the rise of electric vehicles. https://motor-junkie.com/30-things-that-will-disappear-from-the-auto-industry-by-2030 Keys, Keyfobs to RFID and NFC Keycards No more physical keys with electric cars? What happens if you're locked out of your vehicle? Polestar, why so bulky? Manual Folding Side Mirrors to Auto Folding Side Mirrors to Side Mirrors with Reverse Tilt Down Cue the introduction of Virtual Wing Mirrors on one of Audi's e-tron models, essentially ditching the traditional reflective mirrors for cameras mounted outside of the vehicle, which will in turn be projected onto screens inside the car. Damn, my car doesn't even come with reverse tilt down which I think is super useful when parking. Coincidentally saw this review on the e-tron page. Sometimes less is more. Just imagine getting your fancy video side mirrors hit by lanesplitting motorcyclists or that cockeye human with eyes fixated on their phones - won't be just a flying vehicle plate lol. CD Players!!! Lexus comes to mind instantly, other than having the most comfortable carmat. Haha. I can't remember any other modern cars with inbuilt CD player still. But that's not a result of electric cars, who uses CD players still anyway? Grilles! Grilles are interesting. Some have completely ditched grilles, some have reinvented those iconic grilles into something familiar, and some, strange lol. No grilles on the Teslas. Wafer grille on the Polestar 2, still synonymous with Volvo. The newly launched BYD Atto 3. BYD e6 - Not for those with Trypophobia. In my opinion, this Mazda MX-30 looks really good. Honda-e. Too cute. Looks like my brother's cat. Lol. Volkswagen ID.4. Kia EV6. Upcoming Opel Mokka-e. I really like the big nose grille on the M3 and M4 but not working for me on the SUVs especially the BMW iX. MB EQA. Byebye exhausts. No need for fake exhausts please. TBC! Add on if you will.
  3. At every car show or new model introduction, auto manufacturers would always come out with a long list, stating the unique features of their cars, but many a times, these features might just be forgotten over time, or simply taken for granted. These features may be a real technology break through (e.g. engine, gearbox, safety, etc.), or mechanical / electrical (e.g. spoiler, door opening mechanism, head / tail light, etc.). To kick start, anyone still can recall the following terminology? - Twin Door - Bi-Modal Trunk - Waku Waku Gate Sounds familiar? or are they aliens to you? or you think you know something about it? Well these are fanciful names given to boot / trunk / tailgate that open in more than 1 way. Twin Door by Skoda When the 2nd generation Skoda Superb was unveiled in 2008, the car come with many wow factors. But the one that really standout, at least to me, is the dual opening boot lid. It feel just like a small magic show, to see the 4 door sedan opening up it boot in 2 fashion, one like a typical sedan, and the other like a sport back. And after owning one for close to 4.5 years, I can attest to the usefulness of this feature, that ever allowed me to fit in up to 4x 24 - 28" language at one go, and even transporting a 3ft fish tank with the rear seats in-place (not folded). Bi-Modal Trunk by BMW Shortly after the Skoda Superb go on sales in early 2009, BMW follow suit with it own version of dual opening mechanism on the 5 series Gran Turismo Concept (which later debut as the love or hate it 5 GT), and give it the name Bi-Modal Trunk, which sound a little more sophisticated than the Czech brand. While it offer the same flexibility of a hatch back when opened in full (sport back mode), it offer much less practicality when opened in sedan mode, due to it limited access to the boot via the tiny yet wide opening boot lid. Waku Waku Gate by Honda The dual opening mechanism seems very much forgotten till 2015, when Honda introduce it on the new JDM Stepwagon, and somewhat take this concept to the next level, by allowing the tailgate to be used by passenger to access into the last row of the MPV! All are welcome to post the unique features of your car(s), or what you have came across. Up next, what are so special about these MPVs, Nissan Prairie, Toyota Raum and Toyota Isis?
  4. Globally well known for it's expensive cars , but in the safety department it is still far off from what is tested as standard. Looking into Passenger safety NCAP & ANCAP test are conducted on various cars , achieving 4 / 5 Stars had became a mile stone for car manufacturers to achieve. It is not certain how many car buyers do pay attention to this detail , or there are buyer just skim through. Focusing in Cat A vehicle most of the Cars sold are "suppose" to achieve 5 star rating , even a small size vehicle like Honda Jazz is able to achieve it . ANCAP = https://www.ancap.com.au/safety-ratings/5-star Euro NCAP =http://www.euroncap.com/ But here comes the bad news , in order to achieve 5 Stars most of the following criteria or features are install as standard : Dual frontal, side chest, and side head-protecting airbags (curtains) for the 1st and 2nd row are standard. Antilock brakes (ABS) electronic brake distribution (EBD) electronic stability control (ESC) hill launch assist and reversing collision avoidance are also standard* Advanced seat belt reminders are fitted to all seats.* * Clarification require Quite a number of favorite brands comes basic only with 2 airbags , some even without ESC. Paying so much for a car but still lacking in such detail is quite disappointing . We may have a world class ERP system , TOP notch COE system to control number vehicle on the road , Closing on new implementation on Carbon emission , but still a league way behind in terms of Car safety standards. Really hope LTA and even AD collaborate hand in hand to increase our car safety standard while maintaining a reasonable pricing across the board . Not just focusing on COE , car margin while neglecting on the safety features .
  5. Nowadays, many automakers are introducing numerous features on their new models which were not available previously. These features are included to enhance or improve the driving experience on the road. Newer features (or technology, as some would say) usually come with a downside and most of the time it is either complexity or added costs. As a result, automakers face a tough time balancing these new features and the added concerns. Let's take a look at some of the automotive technologies or features that are slowly getting phased out. Compact Disc player Compact discs? Who buys them nowadays? These are the most common questions you will hear when we talk about music CDs. CD players are going through the same phase cassette decks went through when music CDs were hugely popular. Today, one can easily download songs from the cyber space. You could also easily get a portable MP3 player for a low price. The same goes for automotive stereo systems and today's auto stereo systems come with a variety of features. Many of these systems come with a connection that could plug in portable devices such as the iPhone or a USB thumb drive and the higher end ones come with an integrated Bluetooth technology. Conventional buttons and knobs Automakers are aware that consumers today love touch screen systems. There are many reasons why such systems are getting more popular. First of all, it is the level of personal customisation that a user can apply and some automakers have introduced systems that can be operated by voice. Although touch screen systems may look cool but it can be rather distracting to use when you are driving and there were also reports of such systems having problems such as lag or even a total system crash. Such systems are still at the infant stage and as time goes by, they will only get better. Manual transmissions If you were to go to a public car park and pick out ten cars, I can bet you that more than half of them do not have a traditional manual gearbox. Whatever the reasons are, drivers today just prefer automatic transmissions over a manual one. Automatic transmissions today are much more efficient than the ones used years ago. Some automakers even stress that their automated gearboxes shift faster than a human being's hand. It is common to see cars today with auto gearboxes that have six or more gears and this trend will not stop anytime soon. Large sized engines This may not really apply locally as car buyers here are more cautious of engine capacity due to the government's road tax system. But if you were to take a closer look at newer models today, you will realise that automakers are more inclined towards releasing cars with smaller sized engines and this is a good thing for local buyers. Just take a look at cars from the Volkswagen Group. Small turbocharged engines that are able to produce power and efficiency of larger ones. Another example is Ford's EcoBoost range of engines. As prices of fuel are not getting any lower, this strategy of using small capacity engines with direct injection coupled with forced-induced devices, will be the new direction for most automakers in the future. Car keys More cars today comes with keyless entry and drivers need to only carry a key fob. Some of these key fobs are rather high-tech. You could start your car remotely, open or close your rear boot etc. But it seems that the key fob is going to be extinct soon. Late last year, Hyundai introduced a concept technology that enables the owner of the car to lock and unlock his/her car and to also start it with just tapping a smart phone on the car. A Near Field Communication (NFC) tag is located at the door and all the driver has to do is to put his/her smart phone close to the tag. The system also pulls up the driver's profile and sets the audio, climate control and even phone book entries before the engine starts. It even comes with a charging pad so that your phone's battery will not dry up. The above points are just some of the features which I feel that are getting phased out by newer technologies. If you feel that there are other features which are getting phased out, please comment below.
  6. I was searching around for a HU replacement as some of you may know. in SG, i saw a package for a Pioneer HU with USB, and 2 pairs of speakers for around $300 with installation. wanted to see if can get cheaper in M'sia, so i went in and check out some shops. for the equivalent of $300, i can get a DVD double DIN HU with screen and 2 pairs of speakers with in-built tweeters. but all OEM. warranty only for HU. speakers no warranty. will you go for package 1 or package 2? BTW... the double DIN HU is an android player.
  7. Was introduced to this new fun forum function by @babyblade and @kobayashigt! You may call/notify members that aren't participating in a post/thread. Type @ followed by their nickname (example: "@jman8888") It works similar with mention function in Facebook. Let me try @jman888 :p
  8. Doing some research on safety features to help me recommend a car to a family member. Can I know the (A) number of airbags, (B) presence of ABS and © presence of EBD in the Cerato 1.6M, Verna 1.4M, Rio Sedan 1.4M and Aveo Sedan 1.4M?
  9. Was at the VW showroom yesterday and walked around but nothing really excited me. The new Jetta was ok, inside wise with all the dashboard systems and all, its the same as our Skodas. Than I popped into the Skoda showroom in Leng Kee and found out some exciting news, the 2.0TSI Superb model is coming in and ready for taking orders before the COE increases again, which seems most likely since alot of people are changing or upgrading their cars. The new Skoda Superb 2.0TSI is fully featured with keyless entry and push button start, price wise, the 2.0TSI is actually cheaper than the VW Passat 1.8TSI by a good 20k. To order it, they said it will take about 3 months to get in. I was so tempted, the 1.8TSI was going for 146,000. Full featured model at a special price this weekend only. And is available now. GO check it out today! What should I get the 2.0TSI or 1.8TSI......hmm...
  10. hi guys, do you know of any showrooms for above mentioned? looking at both aquariums (not for fish) and indoor water features.
  11. Just to find out the above...understand this topic is kinda broad...maybe can just list out the most important one or two...hehe
  12. Since different models now in the market have their own good features, car makers maybe can give us a car that combines all the good features... it will not necessary be expensive, just mix-n-match nia....: 1. Steering wheel central pad (where control buttons are) that always stays in the same position even if the wheel is turned (Citreon C5) 2. Rear seats which can be folded up (the seat where our buttocks sit) for transporting tall things such as potted flower plants (Jazz/Fit) 3. Sliding rear passenger doors: good for getting in/out in tight carpark (Honda Freed) 4. Space under rear seats for storage (jazz/fit) 5. Small triangular window (called quater-light) in front door that can swing and direct more air into the cabin (espeically on cool days when there's no need to 'on' the aircon) (old school cars) 6. others? (please add your wish list) Car makers can make these items at least available as options so that the base price of cars (without these option) can be kept low, but buyers who like these features can have them if they pay more.
  13. Readers who have been diligently following this blog will recall that quite some time back I was bemoaning the gradual demise of my beloved manual transmission gearboxes. Unsurprisingly, in the months that followed that entry, the manual gearbox has been under a further and renewed onslaught by the much fancier double clutch gearbox variants. Led by VW and their pioneering developments in this field, the manual gearbox is being hunted to extinction. I fear that in the next decade, manual gearboxes will head the way of the Dodo bird. But I am pretty sure that the manual gearbox won't be the only feature in the conventional motor-vehicle that our great grandchildren will only read about in history books. Digging deep into my not so trusty crystal ball, here are my other picks for vehicle technologies headed towards endangered species or extinct status. The Plain Old Naturally Aspirated Engine Powered by Petrol Yes, you heard me right. Lovers of the NA engine, you would do well to appreciate the cars that you are owning now. Because, give us another decade or so and there will no longer be a NA engine as we currently know it. From the way the major leading manufacturers are headed, it appears that soon we will all either be driving vehicles with hybrid NA engines powered partly by some strange eco-fuel or those with force-induction engines. With environmental friendliness being the new buzzword, there doesn't seem to be many years left for the conventional petrol driven NA engines as we know them. The Car Key Bet you didn't think of this one! But my murky crystal ball suggests that this is one piece of car kit that is slowly and silently headed to its demise. After all, the technologies to replace the car key have already been reliably developed and in use for years. I am referring to the keyless entry and push start technologies, of course. While these technologies have gained the biggest acceptance in the more upmarket vehicles, they are already creeping in as standard features on mass market models as well. Eventually, the technologies will get cheaper and in the interests of saving costs by sharing parts, car manufacturers will soon have them as standard on every car, even the budget ones. What are your picks for car technologies that you think will be obsolete in the upcoming years?
  14. Thought i would just post this. fun things to do with your car Enabled couple of features on my A5 via vag-com 1) Enable air circulation On (prevents outside air flowing into car, when aircon is switch on. Previously had to manually activate) 2) Enable Both Rear Fog Lights (not sure if you guys realize, only the right side of rear fog light is turn on) 3) Enable Leaving Home Feature (low beam switches on, when you unlock door)
  15. Hi all, IMHO, cruise control is quite useless in Singapore. When set to 110Km/h on lane 1, sure kena road hogger or be chased by someone who run even faster than 110Km/h . Switched to Lane 2 also vomit blood if set to 90Km/h. Either kena blocked by heavy vehicles or slower moving cars . Also those headlight wipper, hahaha...whatever they are for . Regards,
  16. What are the nice little features you'll like to come stock in your next car? My wish list: * HUD speed indicator * LED interior lighting * Ion generator + deodorizer, eg. Plasmacluster * slot for umbrella
  17. Bros & sistas, Need your help. I need to buy a medium size water feature but due to space constraint, I can't afford those with big water container on its base. After going to Fu Lu Shou, Nurseries near Police Academy & Farmmart, I found one piece (as attached) in IMM but it costs $468 ... my budget is only $350. So, no deal. If you know of any other places that I can buy such water features, please let me know or PM me. Thank you thank you thank you
  18. ABS, EBD, and BA ABS revolutionized brake safety. Following the adoption of seatbelts through the middle of the 20th century and the introduction of the airbag in the 1970s, the biggest change in the field of car safety came in the form of antilock brake systems (ABS) in the 1980s. Antilock brake systems allow drivers to jam on the brakes and still maintain control, thanks to a clever design that prevents brakes from locking up. ABS works by gathering wheel-rotation information from sensors and rapidly pulsing the brakes with an electrohydraulic control unit to distribute brake fluid stored under high pressure. Many contemporary vehicles have four-channel ABS systems, where each wheel is monitored for rotation and the information forwarded to a processor. A few vehicles, mostly light trucks, monitor just the front wheels and the drive shaft in what's called two-channel ABS, but this design is less common. ABS was the most dramatic advance in brake technology since discs brakes replaced drum brakes on new vehicles. But it was just the beginning of combining electronics with hydraulic brake systems to improve safety. With the widespread adoption of ABS systems, the next advancement was to more precisely control the brake pressure for each wheel. For decades, this was accomplished mechanically, with valves that would proportion more fluid pressure to the front wheels where more braking power was needed because of weight shift during braking. But the mechanical system had to deal with an assumed need and couldn't factor changes in passenger or cargo loading. To solve the problem, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) was developed to work with ABS to precisely control hydraulic pressure at each wheel. The system achieves this task by monitoring wheel movement and ride height. When a vehicle is loaded, the system can direct additional pressure to the rear wheels to deal with added loads, but not so much as to cause lockup. A four-channel ABS system can do much of this task, but it intervenes after the fact. With EBD, the system kicks in earlier, leading to shorter stopping distances and the prevention of more accidents. With ABS and EBD gaining in popularity, engineers looked for a system that could increase responsiveness of braking systems even further by priming the brakes immediately prior to emergency braking. The resulting technology was Brake Assist (BA), a system that uses throttle-by-wire, a common attribute in new vehicles, to detect when the driver has suddenly lifted his or her foot from the gas pedal. When that quick lift occurs, the brake system is instantly primed for a quick application. With BA engaged, the brake pedal needs little travel and stopping is hastened dramatically. Like EBD, the brake-assist function relies on ABS technology to operate; in this case, it's the accumulated hydraulic brake pressure. With all the ABS, EBD, and BA acronyms on board, there's far less excuse for rear-ending that hapless soul in front of your vehicle.
  19. Hi all, More new features have been added. 1) Warn Level Now you can see what is your warn level. Warn level will reflect the number of times you have violated the forum guidelines. When your warn level hits 100%, you will be banned. Note that you can only see your own warn level. 2) Online/Offline icon Now you can see if a user is online or offline from their forum post.

  22. SINGAPORE: Police have released more details on escaped Jemaah Islamiyah leader Mas Selamat Kastari's facial features. They said he has a mole on the right side of his cheek, below the eye, and has thin lips. Since his escape, police have also highlighted to the public that he has a limp on his left leg, visible only when he runs or walks fast. Described as a cautious and patient man, police believe Mas Selamat is still in Singapore. Deputy Prime Minister and Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng said: "The search will continue for Mas Selamat. That's why the whole Home team is out in full force, in cooperation with the Singapore Armed Forces which has been very helpful in the hunt for Mas Selamat." Assistant Commissioner Wong Hong Kuan, Operations Director of Singapore Police Force, said: "Based on our intelligence analysis of the person, it further strengthens our belief that he's still in Singapore. "He's likely to be extremely cautious and the first thing he'd try to do when he escapes and has no means of getting out of the country quickly is to try and hide and wait for our guard to falter before he tries to make good his escape." Over 3,000 officers of the Home team have been deployed in the search for Mas Selamat. Some of these officers searched the MacRitchie Reservoir on Sunday. Police said they have received over 1,400 hotline calls on his whereabouts. Posted: 16 March 2008 1626 hrs
  23. Just wondering how many pple are having the various features stated above. You are allowed to have multiple selection.
  24. this is an issue that's brewing in one of the forums, and I wanted to get the opinions of the elders and experienced here... say if the agent markets a car with a particular feature - lets call it "anti-theft system" - but finally delivers the car without it ? this is one of fifty-one "equipment" features highlighted in the brochure and marketed as "standard" (with a tick). now that you've noticed it, the agent (not PI): 1. emails to confirm that it is "not a standard issue" 2. rationalizes that it is not needed because the car has a built-in immobilizer (but the antitheft system includes blinking lights and movement sensors) 3. blacks out this feature on all remaining marketing brochures. What would YOU do ?
