Its exact contents will be up to Singaporeans to suggest. People with ideas are asked to send them to the National Population and Talent Division over the next seven weeks, until May 15. 4. [/size]To All those Born in the 40's, 50's , 60's & early '70s.. The article below was written by Patrick Teoh in his blog "Niamah!!". To All those Born in the 40's, 50's , 60's & early '70s... First, we survived with mothers who had no maids. They cooked /cleaned while taking care of us at the same time They took aspirin, candies floss, fizzy drinks, shaved ice with syrups and diabetes were rare. Salt added to Pepsi or Coke was remedy for fever. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets. As children, we would ride with our parents on bicycles/ motorcycles for 2 or 3. Richer ones in cars with no seat belts or air bags. Riding in the back of a private taxi was a special treat. We drank water from the tap and NOT from a bottle. We would spend hours on the fields under bright sunlight flying our kites, without worrying about the UV ray which never seem to affect us. We go to jungle to catch spiders without worries of Aedes mosquitoes. With mere 5 pebbles (stones) would be an endless game. With a ball (tennis ball best) we boys would ran like crazy for hours. We catch guppy in drains / canals and when it rain we swim there. We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually worry about being unhygenic. We ate salty, very sweet & oily food, candies, bread and real butter and drank very sweet soft sweet coffee/ tea, ice kacang, but we weren't overweight because..... .. WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!! We would leave home in the morning and play all day, till streetlights came on. No one was able to reach us all day. AND WE DON

  10. Women are born better drivers (from AsiaOne Motoring, 21 Sep 2011) By Tan Mae Lynn Let's be honest. We're better drivers and you know it. We women are just more modest (usually) and don't have epic egos to battle with. Self-assured is what you can call us. Here are just three reasons why we are better behind the wheel: 1. Better temperament This is why insurance companies offer lower premiums to women drivers. Extensive studies have shown that women are generally more cautious drivers and, hence, statistically less prone to accidents caused by their own recklessness. Furthermore, when you have a more even temperament, logically you can perceive your surroundings clearly. Besides, how many road rage cases that you have been involved in or heard of featured a woman perpetrator? I rest my case. 2. Peripheral vs tunnel vision When you are more focused, you can strategise better. That's probably why there are more men in high-powered positions in companies. But when it comes to peripheral vision, women are better. Men suffer from tunnel vision. If your line of sight covers more elements, you become aware of potential dangers and opportunities on the road ahead and around you. Granted, men may have better depth perception. But when you're driving, if you're more aware of other motorists around you, you can make better judgment calls. 3. Sense of direction Both men and women often get lost on unfamiliar roads. But men are likely to stay lost longer for this singular reason: Their egos prevent them from asking for help. For some strange reason, they often feel embarrassed asking for directions, even from a stranger they're probably never going to meet again. That said, men have an internal compass to find their way around. Women, on the other hand, need landmarks (Google search says so). Seriously, if you're in unfamiliar territory, how do you tell where's north, south, east and west? But tell me to look out for the golden arches of a fast food joint at a certain cross junction before turning left, and I'd know how to get to my destination. And if that still doesn't get me anywhere, there's bound to be a kind local I can approach who can tell me how to get there. That said, there are, of course, exceptions. I readily concede (no, I don't need to battle my ego) that there are women who betray all odds and are plain bad drivers. But that's fodder for another column. Stay tuned.
  11. Daddy, how was I born? A little boy goes to his father and asks 'Daddy, how was I born' The father answer, 'Well, son, I guess one day you will need to find out anyway! Your Mom and I first got together in a chat room on Yahoo. Then I set up a date via e-mail with your Mom and we met at a cyber-cafe. We sneaked into a secluded room, and googled each other. There your mother agreed to a download from my hard drive. As soon as I was ready to upload, we discovered that neither of us had used a Firewall, and since it was too late to hit the delete button, nine months later, a little Pop-up appeared that said: scroll down.... 16. published somewhere,... QUOTE Friday . April 25, 2008 NEWLY arrived, a maid asked her employer if she could get a rest day. Her employer was incredulous. "If I wanted to give my maid a day off, I would have hired one from another country," said the employer, who had signed her up on the assumption that maids of some nationalities were more pliant than others. Faced with an employment contract that requires them to either give their maids a rest day, or compensate them accordingly for working, some Singaporean employers have sought ways to get around the terms or extract the most from their workers. And this begs the question of how much has truly changed for the 170,000 foreign domestic workers in our midst - two years after the industry association put together a standard contract requiring employers to give maids at least one day off a month. A Today straw poll of 50 employers found that only 62 per cent gave their maids a rest day. With some industry watchers criticising the rest-day clause as being too flexible, should legislation be put in place to mandate the issue? .... There are several simple reasons why many Singaporean employers are reluctant to give their maids a day off. You see, if the maid runs away, the government will fine the employer $5,000. If the maid commits a crime such as shoplifting, the government will fine the employer $5,000. If the maid is caught having sex with someone, the government will fine the employer $5,000. If the maid gets pregnant, the government will also fine the employer $5,000. Oh, and you have to send your maid for a pregnancy testevery six months). If you didn't know any of the above, then either you do not employ a maid, or you didn't read the small print of the Manpower Ministry's work permit conditions. Many employers are afraid that if their maid has a day off and gets into trouble, the employer will not only have to solve the trouble, but also have to fork out $5,000 as a free gift to the government. (Not that the government will then help you solve the trouble. It's just a fine, plain & simple). Intuitively, this smacks of gross unfairness. The employer gets punished not for something he did, but for something that somebody else (the maid) did. Furthermore, once the maid leaves the employer's residence, the employer has no way of monitoring where the maid goes and what she does there. To encourage employers to give their maids a day off, the government needs to change these ridiculous rules. I agree that employers should be fined and punished, if they fail to perform their responsibilities as employers - for example, paying the maid's salary on time; providing adequate food and accommodation; and ensuring a safe, secure working environment. But employers should not be held responsible, for things that a maid may do, of her own free will. When the maid goes out on her rest day, the employer simply has no viable way to ensure that she will not do anything that breaches her work permit conditions. (Which, by the way, are quite extensive and onerous). We may draw a curious parallel with Mas Selamat's escape, and PM Lee's determined, if muddled, defence of Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng in Parliament. Mas Selamat ran away. But PM Lee said that Wong Kan Seng was not at fault and should not be punished in any way. The reason being that Wong Kan Seng personally did not do anything which allowed Mas Selamat to escape. Strangely, if your maid runs away, it IS your fault and you SHOULD be punished. Even if you did not personally do anything to let her run away (apart from giving her a day off). Similarly, if your maid becomes pregnant, it IS your fault and you SHOULD be punished. Even if you did not personally do anything to make her pregnant. Oh well. What can I say? Maids are not terrorists. But then you are not Wong Kan Seng. So the rules remain stacked against you. Wong Kan Seng gets off lightly, but you won't. Even if his lapse has far greater, and graver, implications than yours. Your runaway maid wouldn't blow up Changi Airport, would she? UNQUOTE
