  1. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong took a swipe at the opposition Workers' Party's contributions in Parliament so far as he dropped in on Punggol East on Saturday morning. "I don't see any strong views or alternatives being presented by the opposition, whether it's the NCMPs or the elected MPs," said the PM during a brief walkabout at Rivervale Plaza. "We are doing things on a national level," he added, building on the same vein as several other People's Action Party speakers during a rally the previous night on Friday. Then, Education Minister Heng Swee Keat and others reminded voters of the party's track record since the 2011 General Election, with major policies announced in housing, transport, education and healthcare. PM Lee, in his first walkabout in Punggol East since by-elections were announced, said voters need to bear this in mind when they go to polls. "Ultimately, choose the person who can serve you well in Punggol East and also broadly in Singapore," he said to reporters after a short 15-minute walkabout around Rivervale Plaza. There are currently eight opposition voices in Parliament -- Png Eng Huat, the MP from Hougang as well as five from Aljunied GRC (Low Thia Kiang, Sylvia Lim, Chen Show Mao, Pritam Singh and Muhamad Faisal Manap . Gerald Giam and Yee Jenn Jong are Non-constituency members of parliament, and do not have full voting rights. PM Lee, who is also secretary-general of the PAP, said that its candidate Dr Koh Poh Koon has the potential to reach greater heights if he wins come Polling Day next Saturday. "But I told him his first priority is to fight and win in PE, win the support and trust of residents," said PM Lee, who was accompanied by Acting Minister for Social and Family Development Chan Chun Sing and other party members. "When he is ready, and when I judge he is ready... I will be appointing him to a suitable political office but we will decide what, later on." Dr Koh did not accompany him for the walkabout as he was meeting residents elsewhere in the area, but both met earlier in the morning during a breakfast meeting at the PAP Punggol East education centre. PM Lee also assured residents that the upgrading works at the much-troubled Rivervale Plaza, which has beset by construction delays after the main contractor went bust, will be done by the middle of the year.
  2. Motor insurance has increased in recent years, I seriously hope they (Insurance Companies) will think about rewarding loyal customers. Singapore motor insurers make first profit since 2005 Published on Mar 14, 2012 By Christopher Tan Most motorists - especially those who have been accident-free - can expect a breather when they next renew their motor insurance, after years of unrelenting premium rises. Motor insurers posted an underwriting profit of $21.2 million in 2011, the first after five consecutive years of losses. At its annual briefing on Wednesday, the General Insurance Association (GIA) said the average premium collected from motor insurance - which still forms the single biggest segment for the industry - rose by 2.5 per cent in 2011 to an all-time high of $1,274. Average motor premium had been rising year on year since 2006, when it was $867.

  4. been driving a 1er bimmer with n55 engine for awhile. It is a quite powerful pocket rocket and fun to drive. For a clean look butt I decided to debadge the 135i and slammed a hartge quad pipe on it. Then the funny story came, I started to get tailgated by all sorts of funny cars everyday Craziest one is a honda CRV, yes a f*cking jap SUV!! tried to tailgate me beyond 130kph in mid night along AYE with all lanes clear and he followed me whichever lane I changed to. He came so close as if he wanted to slam his headlights into my rear window LOL I was so worried about his pathetic brakes, I tap on my mine he sure would bang into me. Yesterday kena tailgated by a white Vios along PIE again, once awhile I hit on the gas to shake him off but he's been very persistent. When I got slowed down by traffic, he would slowly catch up and show his shinny tooth to me. I have been driving in different countries, seeing crazy drivers, aggressive drivers or lousy drivers. but some sgrean are just plain stupid drivers tailgating at high speed with poor brakes? that's suicidal and murderous.

  6. When I read this article, I really . I am not privy to whatever James Bond stuff that goes on behind the scenes but since 9/11 we have had multiple security screw ups like Mas Selamat, Ah Took, people clearing customs with the wrong passport, corpse water and so on. Makes me feel that we had 10 peaceful years more because the terrorists consider us small fries and the Yanks have been busy pounding them. IIRC, Mas Selamat got exposed because of a tip off from the US. S'pore's 10 peaceful years didn't happen by chance: PM Mr Lee acknowledges role of Home Team, S'poreans in staying calm in turbulent times Updated 11:55 AM Sep 12, 2011 by Carolyn Quek SINGAPORE - Singapore has had 10 peaceful years since the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the United States, but that did not happen by chance, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong yesterday as he looked back on how the country has been affected by the events of Sept 11, 2001, on the last decade. Noting that security forces here and the various Home Team agencies have worked hard to keep the country safe, Mr Lee said: "We pre-empted, we detected, we arrested and detained people who would have done bad things to us and done us a lot of harm - not just hurt and kill Singaporeans but brought damage and torn apart our whole society and racial harmony." The Prime Minister, who was speaking at the Teck Ghee Lantern Night celebrations in Ang Mo Kio, also said that the event affected not only the United States, but also changed the world, triggering a battle with terrorists. But Singaporeans have lived calmly and the country's racial harmony has been strengthened, and this is something to give thanks and be grateful for, added Mr Lee. "Our different communities have worked together to come closer together, to build trust with one another, to be able to feel more Singaporean, even though we know that there are tensions and problems in the world outside. And so over 10 years, we've had peaceful years, and we've come closer together." Mr Lee said he was also glad to see many families from other races coming together for the lantern festival last night. "When we celebrate the lantern festival or when we celebrate the other community festivals in Singapore - whether it's Hari Raya or Deepavali - we all celebrate together regardless of race, language or religion and tonight I am very happy to see many Malay families, Indian families, bringing their kids here and celebrating with us this lantern festival. "It reminds us how happy we have been and it reminds us how hard we have to work to keep this harmony together for many years to come," said the Prime Minister. Mr Lee, who was accompanied by his wife, Ms Ho Ching, for the festivities, was also presented a calligraphy scroll at the event and took part in a lantern walk with residents. Link

  9. a few months ago, one of the aircon vents keep getting blocked, and the air that comes out of all vents is very dusty. after some time, the blockage went away, even though there's still alot of dust inside the system. it still occasionally gives out hot air, but the air is generally cooling enough. now, my old man's car aircon totally collapsed. All hot air and dust. And the aircon has developed a whirring sound since yesterday, which varies with engine speed but goes away with the A/C switched off. And recently when he wanted to take out the aircon filter to blow, he realised the filter is not inside since purchasing the 2nd hand car one yr ago. what have gone wrong?

  15. NSman who died had not submitted medical certificate By Valarie Tan, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 02 October 2008 1702 hrs SINGAPORE: Investigations into the death of full-time National Serviceman Joe Foo Wei Rong found that he had been given medical leave two days before he died but he did not inform officials about it. The Defence Ministry said in a statement on Thursday that a medical certificate dated September 28 was found in Private Foo's personal bunk cupboard after his death. The medical centre had no documentation of his medical certificate. Soldiers are required to submit certifications of their medical conditions at the centre. Private Foo had seen a doctor at the Singapore General Hospital on Sunday. He was supposed to rest from September 28 to 29 for "sprains and strains of the knee and leg", and to be given light duties for the subsequent four days. It is not known why Private Foo did not report his medical condition, but investigations are currently underway and a full report is expected in eight weeks. The former Singapore Polytechnic student died on Tuesday while doing chin-ups at Lim Chu Kang camp. Friends and relatives remember Private Foo as an athletic young man who enjoyed basketball, and his death came as a shock to many who turned up at his wake on Thursday. Private Foo is the third full-time National Serviceman to have died in camp this year. Recruit Andrew Cheah and Officer Cadet Clifton Lam suffered the same fate in June. All three were former students at polytechnics where physical activities are not compulsory, unlike junior colleges where exercise is part of the curriculum. Chairperson of the Government Parliamentary Committee for Defence and Foreign Affairs Indranee Rajah, who is also the MP of Tanjong Pagar GRC, said: "Obviously it needs to be studied more deeply and carefully, but to me, it does seem to me that before anybody goes in for NS, the preconditioning is important. "And as far as possible, from secondary school, all the way to the time they enter National Service for BMT (Basic Military Training), it's important that the levels of fitness should be maintained." The polytechnics that were contacted said they have many sporting activities in place for students. Singapore Polytechnic says an estimated 15 per cent of total student population take part in sports. Half of its 2007 graduating cohort sat for the National Physical Fitness Award tests, an increase from 35 per cent in the previous year. the blaming games has started since the parents of the deceased NSF blamed SAF for letting his son attending physical training even though there was a valid MC. SAF conducted investigation and found out that the deceased did not submit the MC to MO. So now everyone is going to find a black sheep. SAF and an MP seems to put the blame on polys for not being able to precondition male enlistees during poly terms...KNN ...might as well blame the deceased and parents for allowing the son to attend poly in the 1st place...or might as well blame the whole govt for setting up polys in the early days..... it is individual responsibility to condition own body and keep fit to maintain healthy...
  16. Channel NewsAsia - Monday, August 11 http://sg.news.yahoo.com/cna/20080810/tap-...lf-231650b.html SINGAPORE: It has been slightly more than a month since evening Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) charges were imposed on vehicles driving into the area around the Singapore River. ADVERTISEMENT While traffic speeds have gone up, businesses in nearby Chinatown have suffered since the ERP kicked in on July 7. In a recent survey by the Chinatown Business Association, some shopping centres reported their sales fell by up to 50 per cent. Tourist landmarks such as the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and the Chinatown Heritage Centre and even good hawker fare could not lure the crowds back. For example, popular Maxwell Food Centre has seen a 40 per cent decline in business. The Chinatown Business Association had expected customers to react in the short
  17. Since I run exclusively on CNG save for the starting and idling. Marked differences in the used oil. Mainly from the smell. In my past changes, there is a heavy petrol smell from the oil. Now there is none! Seems like the oil is indeed diluted with petrol a lot for my car.
  18. 1. Despite the facts that we're seeing the emergence of better spec Korean cars but when we look at the Sales figure of Hyundai in Singapore, it has been declining since year 2004. Year 2004 = 13,796 Year 2005 = 12,860 Year 2006 = 10,007 Year 2007 = 5,440 and Kia is no where to be seen on the Top 10 list. 2. This make me pondering that a simple economy theory exists where when the economy is good, people will buy more expensive stuff than cheaper items. Regards,
  19. And why are we still seeing the same price list on our petrol stations I know this has been discussed b4 and that the savings at the end of the year is just a few hundreds(depend on how you run)... but why are we being treated like a sucker loh? Prices dropped to more than 10%. That means effectively our friendly petrol providers are raking in this 10% as profit from the sky? Correct me if I'm wrong please... let me see the light at the end of the station
  20. SINGAPORE - Oil prices traded at their lowest levels since mid-2005 in Asian hours Friday as the market reacted to high US stockpiles and unusually warm winter weather in the United States, dealers said. At 9:39 am (0139 GMT) New York's main contract, light sweet crude for delivery in February, was down 11 cents at US$55.48 a barrel from US$55.59 in late US trades when the contract sank US$2.73. The contract had not fallen as low in Asia since June 2005 when it traded below US$54. Brent North Sea crude for February delivery was at US$54.85. The sell-off came after data showed rising reserves of United States heating fuel during an unusually warm winter. - AFP/ir http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp.../250757/1/.html basket..why are pump prices NOT back to mid 2005 levels?
