  1. Washington – A study by a team of Japanese scientists has shown it is possible for mammals to absorb oxygen via the anus. Intrigued by how certain sea creatures breathe through their intestines in emergencies, researchers at Tokyo Medical and Dental University were able to prove the same was true under experimental circumstances for mice, rats and pigs, publishing their findings in the journal Med on Friday. They say the finding might also apply to humans who are in respiratory distress when ventilators are not available or inadequate. For higher order animals, respiration involves breathing in oxygen and excreting carbon dioxide using lungs or gills. Some species however have evolved alternate ventilatory mechanisms. Loaches, catfish, sea cucumbers and orb-weaving spiders can also use their hindgut to oxygenate to survive in emergencies. This is called enteral ventilation via anus, or EVA. “The rectum has a mesh of fine blood vessels just beneath the surface of its lining, which means that drugs administered through the anus are readily absorbed into the bloodstream,” lead author Ryo Okabe said. This made the team wonder whether oxygen could be delivered into the bloodstream in the same way. To answer the question, they decided to carry out experiments on oxygen-deprived mice, pigs and rats using two methods: delivering the oxygen into the rectum in gas form, and infusing an oxygen-rich enema via the same route. The researchers prepared the lining of the rectum by rubbing it to cause inflammation and increase blood flow, which improved the effectiveness of oxygen delivery. However, since such preparations would likely be unacceptable for humans, they also tried using oxygenated perfluorodecalin, a liquid that has already been shown to be safe and is in selective clinical use. Delivery of oxygen both as gas and in liquid form increased oxygenation, normalized the animals’ behavior and prolonged their survival. The team also confirmed the improvement in oxygenation at the cellular level, by a technique called immunochemical staining. They added that the small amount of liquid that was absorbed along with the oxygen caused no harm and did not disrupt the gut bacteria, indicating the method was safe. “Patients in respiratory distress can have their oxygen supply supported by this method to reduce the negative effects of oxygen deprivation while the underlying condition is being treated,” added co-author Takanori Takebe. Eventually the team hopes to establish the technique’s effectiveness in humans in a clinical setting. Writing an accompanying commentary, Caleb Kelly of the Yale School of Medicine, said EVA should be taken seriously. “This is a provocative idea and those first encountering it will express astonishment,” he said. “Yet, as the potential clinical role is considered and the data presented by Okabe et al is examined, EVA emerges as a promising therapy deserving of scientific and medical interest.” The technique could play a role when there is a shortage of ventilators, as seen in the current coronavirus pandemic, he added. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2021/05/15/national/science-health/mammals-breath-anus-study/
  2. Really need to see the CCTV footage to determine whose fault A 28-year-old woman fell into gap in an escalator being serviced at Tanah Merah MRT Station last Monday. Miss Azlin Amran was stuck in the waist-deep pit for almost half an hour as Singapore Civil Defence Force rescuers worked quickly to free her. The unemployed woman, who was later rushed to hospital and sent to the intensive care unit, suffered injuries including a punctured lung, a fractured pelvis and spinal injuries. said her mother. SMRT told The New Paper that a barrier had been put up at the entrance of the escalator that was being serviced. But Miss Azlin had told her mother, Madam Azizah Mohd Lajis, 52, that there were no barriers at the escalator that evening. Read the full report in The New Paper on Monday (Feb 04).
  3. Hi, i've been wondering, why isn't the above 2 models, the Toyota Innova and Avanza available through official distributors??? these 2 models have been selling really well in Asean Countries, except for the lack of availability in Singapore.... the Avanza makes the most sense since it's like the Sienta, having a 1.5L engine, but doesn't feel like driving a huge MPV around.... and it's in our CAT A category.... so why isn't it sold here??? can anyone advise???
  4. Kindergarten school bus carrying kids crashes through barrier and into other vehicles A school bus carrying nine students from Glory Kindergarten crashed through a barrier near Pei Hwa Presbyterian Primary School near Upper Bukit Timah Road. The incident, which happened around noon on Tuesday, saw the bus hitting two stationary vehicles and a bicycle. School principal Mrs Helen Chua told The Straits Times that the bus driver was making his way out of the kindergarten grounds when he appeared to lose control of his vehicle, which ploughed through the fence straight ahead instead of turning right as intended. The children on board, who are aged between four and six, along with their adult bus attendant and driver escaped with "very minor injuries" such as bruises and bumps, said Mrs Chua. "Everyone had their seat belts on so that was probably what prevented something worse from happening," she added, noting that it is the first time such an incident has happened with any of the school's transportation services. The bus driver is understood to be a male in his late 40s with a clean driving record and an employee of one of the school's longtime bus service vendors. Police investigations are ongoing. Wah lau eh, what's going on nowadays..

[rolleyes] From STOMP: http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg...rpark_wall.html Posted on 18 Apr 2012 Goondu driver rams car right through wall at carpark STOMPer Avies was stunned when he came across a photo shared on facebook of a car which had apparently rammed right through a multi-storey carpark wall in what seems to be Malaysia. Said the STOMPer: "I saw this being shared on facebook by a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend...well you get the point. "Anyway this driver is insane! "Although the wall looks like one of those pre-fab types with a hole in the middle, but still who would drive like this? "The guy walking at the side might just be a passenger... "Plus, anyone know where exactly this happened???"
  9. How good does it this sound? That is of course a rhetorical question. Different rules must apply in China, as, if I did that in the UK I'd have plod knocking on my door in double-quick time! In particular it is noticeable how fast the gear changes are. They are much, much faster than a standard 599, which in itself isn't bad for a single clutch gearbox. via: autoviva
  10. Dear brothers and sisters of MCF, This morning I experienced "groaning" sound coming from the front when I was braking from speed ranging from 30-50km/h. I didn't drive my car after last Sunday when I drove through a mini flood till today morning. My steering doesn't feel any jerk while braking but the sound sounds pretty scary, I haven't tried high speed braking yet though. So I was hoping to hear some advice from you guys. Should I go to a workshop to do a check? If yes, do you have any reliable and recommended workshop to do a quick check? (preferably not too far from the east) Thank you so much in advance! Regards, Tsr729

  13. 1. Oil light came on. Check engine oil level and the engine oil level is OK. So not due to oil running low. 2, Oil light came on and persist. So took car to a workshop in Ubi for repair. 3. Mechanic jacked up car ....found oil sump leaking....gasket failed. So need to remove oil sump for new gasket and sealant. And need to change oil pressure switch. So left car at the workshop for repair, includes Engine Oil change service and to collect in the evening. Boss of workshop sms later: Hi Sir, tis is from the Workshop. Our man is checking through the car during servicing n find your clutch wearing out soon. Based on the wear rate, the vehicle milage should be approximately 140-150K. THe clutch pedal is giving quite a bit of squeaking sound as a result. Would U like to replace it? Thks. Is it possible to see the clutch disc or plate worn out through the oil sump removal and through the Flywheel?

  16. DENVER - USA - A full body scanner operator was caught masturbating during a scanning session by airport staff late Tuesday. Airport officials at Denver International airport were on high alert yesterday when a full body scanner operator was caught masturbating in his booth as a team of High School netball players went through the scanner. "The young ladies were going through the scanner one by one, and every time one went through, this guys face was getting redder and redder. His hand was moving and then he started sweating. He was then seen doing his 'O' face. That's when the security dragged him out of his booth and cuffed him. He had his pants round his ankles and everybody was really disgusted," Jeb Rather, a passenger on a flight to New York told CBS news. The controversial scanners display every minute detail of a person's body and have been called intrusive by privacy campaigners. Body scanners penetrate clothing to provide a highly detailed image so accurate that critics have likened it to a virtual porn shoot. Technologies vary, with millimeter wave systems capturing highly detailed pictures of genitals, and backscatter X-ray machines able to show precise anatomical detail. The U.S. government likes the idea because body scanners can detect concealed weapons better than traditional magnetometers. "What do you want to do, get blown up by a goddamn Arab at 30,000 feet or we get to see your private parts? It's up to you, the ball's in your park," head of the TSA's scanning department, Rodney Schroeder, told CNN. http://www.dailysquib.co.uk/?c=124&a=2389

  18. This is so stupid As if it's the restaurant patrons fault that the lifts is OoO and they have to exit via the casino. Incident at Marina Bay Sands raises question about casino levy exemptions By Teo Xuanwei | Posted: 08 June 2010 0013 hrs SINGAPORE : Lawyers said tweaks to the Casino Control Act may be needed to provide for "special circumstances", such as if an emergency breaks out. This follows an incident when 15 diners were forced to walk through the casino because they found that two lifts - their only exits - were out of order. The group refused to pay the $100 casino levy. The incident happened on May 4. The diners had patronised a Chinese restaurant, Imperial Treasure, at Marina Bay Sands (MBS). Responding to MediaCorp, the Casino Regulatory Authority (CRA) said it is "aware of this incident and is currently looking into the matter". It is unclear how many in the group are Singaporeans and permanent residents. But MediaCorp understands none of them have been prosecuted yet. The incident raises questions about whether the law provides for exemptions from entry levies. One lawyer said the incident may have highlighted a technical breach of the law but the Attorney General's Chambers still has the discretion to decide whether to charge the individuals or penalise Marina Bay Sands. By failing to collect the entry levies, Marina Bay Sands would also have flouted Section 116 of the Act - which makes them liable to disciplinary action. This may come in the form of one or more of the following - cancellation or suspension of a casino license; receiving a letter of censure; the variation of the terms of a casino license; or being fined not more than $1 million. Sunil Sudheesan from law firm KhattarWong said: "Frankly, I do not think that CRA would take any action in this case." He added that tweaks to the existing laws may be needed to provide for "special circumstances", such as fires. - CNA /ls
  19. I cannot comment on OCS / SISPEC but I find that it is almost impossible for anyone to fail a vocational course in the SAF. There are people who get OOC because of injury but I have never heard of anyone failing due to sheer incompetence. Is my observation correct or have anyone come across people who were so out of their element they actually got the boot? While we are on this topic, is it true that the most CMI officers end up as RP or MTO?

  21. Chelsea manage to scrap through to the last 16 with a 2 - 1 win over CFR Cluj-Napoca with the help from Didier Drogba.......... Elsewhere, Liverpool manage to beat PSV Eindhoven with a much weaken side and three youngsters. RB rest SG, Xabi Alonso and Jose Reina with Stephen Darby, Jay Spearing and Martin Kelly all getting their first taste of Champions league football. ........ ESPN Soccernet report : Chelsea 2 - 1 CFR Cluj-Napoca Didier Drogba climbed off the substitute's bench to send Chelsea into the knockout stages of the Champions League with a 2-1 victory over CFR Cluj. The Ivory Coast international, a 65th minute substitute for opening scorer Salomon Kalou, poked the ball under CFR Cluj goalkeeper Nuno Claro for the winner just six minutes later. But Drogba's efforts were not enough for Chelsea to finish top of Group A after Roma defeated Bordeaux. Chelsea have only themselves to blame for finishing second. They squandered two chances to top the group during a European campaign that has eventually seen them stutter across the first-stage finishing line. Luiz Felipe Scolari insists he feels `zero pressure' as coach of Chelsea but his animated behaviour on the touchline in the early moments of the game suggested otherwise. PSV Eindhoven 1 - 3 Liverpool Liverpool had to come from behind against PSV Eindhoven to clinch top place in Group D, but in the end this Champions League victory was achieved at a canter at the Philips Stadion. Boss Rafael Benitez rested Steven Gerrard and sent out a much-changed side against the Dutch champions. Rafael Benitez hailed Liverpool's young brigade as they produced a compelling victory that made the Spaniard a record breaker. A comfortable 3-1 win over PSV Eindhoven in the final Champions League Group D match means Benitez has now won 40 games in Europe as Liverpool manager, surpassing Bob Paisley's previous mark of 39. ............................. 22. Champion League Soccer. ManU, Arsenal and Liverpool are through to the knockout stages..... Chelsea had to wait for their final match as they are held to a draw (1-1) by Bordeaux ........ While Inter lost to Panathinaikos at home ........ ESPN reports : Mourinho stunned Panathinaikos revived their hopes of reaching the second round of the Champions League with a 1-0 win at Inter Milan tonight. A 69th-minute goal from Jose Sarriegi was enough to win the game for the Greeks, who were backed by a large following of supporters at the San Siro.
  23. http://www.asiaone.com/Motoring/News/Story...0808-81415.html Form a team and race through KPE Motorists can race through the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE) tunnel- South-east Asia's longest underground road tunnel - before it fully opens on 20 September. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is giving 400 people, or 100 cars, a chance to tackle challenges along the unopened 9km span north of Sims Avenue in a car rally to be held on 6 September. This is to get motorists familiar with the KPE and the roads in its vicinity. On 14 September, there will also be a 10km run and a 5km walk-and-run. The LTA aims to break the Guinness World Records by creating the largest lantern parade in the tunnel that day. This article was first published in the Straits Times on August 8th 2008.

  25. Dear Chin Chai One 10Q you for your letter. On behalf of the Prime Minister, I am replying to your letter as follows. As the erected party of Singaporeans, we are here to serve. We are demon-cratic country, you are master, we gahmen servant, we serve you. You got problems we must help. You say no need our help? That means your not Singapore 's master. You say you run for cover? Cannot one, our police will find you. GST is to help the Gahmen to help yourself. The Gahmen Service Tax is everywhere, you go America also have one, cannot run one. Traffic very bad, so bad that we have to hold car racing at nite to avoid traffic jam. We believe there is no free lunch like PM's father say before, you use, you must pay, so Every Road Pay. So you see no ERP cannot one. Needless to say, passenger service also must pay. The increase in bus fare and MRT and taxi fare are very little already. We forsee world inflation coming: oil, steel, pay of foreign talents etc, so we have to pay for the service. You see, many foreign talents come to Singapore . If we don't pay our ministers well, they will go other countries to be their foreign talents. So must raise salary to keep them. If not, Nathan, Shanmugam, Bala etc will go India and work. Khaw will go Malaysia . etc etc. Must keep them. To keep them must pay well. You are right, any help also must pay. To help yourself? No, it's illegal. You mean you can build your own MRT? Run your own buses? Drive your Ba-Ong-Chia? Build your own roads? Seow liao!! Every one help himself then how? No social order lah! Ga ga ask for help, we are here to serve you. We understand some of you have temporary problem. Dont worry, it is only short term. We must look long term. We must invest long term. Now lose a bit dont cow beh cow boo, long term! Yes, remember. 30 or 50 years later we will own Swiss banks, US banks, UK properties, maybe even South Pole condominiums. We must tighten our seat belt and bite our false teeth. The future very bright. As long as you> continue to support the gahmen 30 to 50 years you will see bright future. So Chiang See Tong a bit lah. Also, investing is very complicated business, not easy. We must pay school fee to learn from advanced countries. On Selamat's case, we also must learn our lesson. We encourage life-long-learning. I learn whole life time, you learn whole life, Mr Wong Cant Sing also whole life learning. It's actually good. Mr Wong already apologise, dont force a dog to jump over the wall, the wall may collapse. Old dog cannot jump high also. Selamat's case gives us many lessons. We must be on alert, not too complacent. Now every Singaporean know there can be a terrorist among us any time. This is the best self defence education !! PM will give Mr Wong another salary increment for that. Also now we merge the prisons and detention centre, more space will be available now. We will build it like another IR, Integrated Retention - so those dont want our service and thinking of doing illegal service will go there. We will pass a new law too, the expenses for stay in that IR will be deducted from your CPF money. Remember we must be grateful to people who help us --> and pay. I hope I have explained the situation and give you the message clearly. If you still need help, please call my handphone: 99906767, it's toll-free. By the way, Mr Chin Chai One, our pioneer Toh Chin Chai already toh long ago. So if you choose to be Chin Chin Chai Chai, you will also Toh. 10Q you again, Reguards, Ah Beng Grassrude secretary
