  19. SINGAPORE, Aug 9, 2008 (AFP) - Officials in Singapore have changed the direction of the world's biggest observation wheel because feng shui masters said it was taking good fortune away from the city, a report said Saturday. The Singapore Flyer, which opened earlier this year, had originally revolved so that it rose to face the business district and went down overlooking the sea, the Strait Times newspaper said. However, masters of the ancient Chinese art of geomancy convinced the wheel's management to reverse it so that it was not taking fortune away from the city. "A number of feng shui masters had approached us to tell us that the Flyer is on the perfect site to pick up the good qi (energy) flowing into Singapore, but it was going in the wrong direction," said Florian Bollen, the Singapore Flyer's chairman. "The Flyer was going against the sun and taking fortune away from Singapore." Bollen likened the change to the "completion of a perfect movie" to give a better story, but added that it cost the company a "six figure sum," the report said. For visitors now riding one of the wheel's 28 air-conditioned capsules, their view starts with beaches and housing estates in the east and culminates with a vista of the business centre. At 165 metres (545 feet), or 42 storeys, the Singapore Flyer is 30 metres higher than Britain's London Eye, said builders Great Wheel Corp. Despite being a modern city Singapore is a largely ethnic Chinese nation, where traditions still hold sway.
  20. FOR half an hour yesterday morning, two overseas passengers were suspended mid-air in the Singapore Flyer. But that may not have been such a bad situation - after all, they had extra time to enjoy the view of the city. A Singapore Flyer spokesman said it had to suspend operations for about 30 minutes due to a technical glitch at around 9am yesterday. A ride on the 165m-tall wheel - about 42 storeys high - typically takes half an hour, and each capsule can take up to 28 people. It is not clear how far the passengers were into their ride before the incident happened, and details on who they were and where they were from were not available. Once the glitch occurred, the spokesman said that measures were promptly taken to ensure the two passengers were aware of the situation through a two-way intercom system. Every capsule is equipped with the system, which is linked to the control room, allowing passengers and the control room personnel to communicate. There are also surveillance cameras installed in every capsule. The Singapore Flyer said its maintenance contractor found a minor fault in the braking system. The attraction resumed operations by mid-morning. After they were safely off the Flyer, the two passengers were offered a complimentary flight and a meal each. Adults ride for $29.50 on the wheel, while children aged 3 to 12 ride for $20.65. Other passengers who went on it later said that things went smoothly. Ms Cheryl Tay, 40, a music teacher, was informed that the wheel had stopped earlier that morning when she arrived at 10am. But she did not think about changing her plans to get on the ride as she was 'confident in the quality of the maintenance staff'. She boarded the Flyer at around 11.30am with her mother and her sons, aged 5 and 3. She said: 'If I were stuck with other adults, I'd just make the most of the situation and enjoy the view. 'But I might not have enjoyed it as much if I were stuck there with my children, as they may become a little anxious.' Another passenger, Mrs Agnes Lee, 29, who was there with her family, said with a laugh: 'As long as they don't leave us hanging there for one hour, I wouldn't be worried!' -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Watch F1 night races on Flyer, with champagne STILL fretting about where you can catch the action during the Formula One night race come 26 Sep? You can get on board the Singapore Flyer, because around 80 per cent of the circuit will be visible to spectators. Mr Steven Yeo, general manager of Singapore's newest attraction, said in a media release yesterday that the company is launching a new ticket category - the Champagne Flight (Individual) - for those who wish to witness this historic event. Tickets for rides from 26 Sep to 28 Sep will range from $150 to $500 per person, depending on the time slots in the day, starting from 10am to 11pm. Ticket holders will also enjoy premium champagne, strawberries and chocolates during their ride. The pricing for the basic tickets will remain unchanged for rides from 10am to 2pm on the three race days. More ticket categories will be available at Singapore Flyer for the race weekend and details will be released soon.
  21. Two orangutans that were brought for a ride in the Singapore Flyer by the Singapore Zoo last Thursday became an exercise in how not to create a public relations disaster. In a bid to raise public awareness for their well-being, the orangutans became the centre of attention for the wrong reasons when they panicked while on board a cabin in the Flyer. The two primates suffered from a panic attack, and even huddled in a corner during the ride. The Zoo was criticised by the public after 12-year-old Chomel and three-year-old Merlin's experience was broadcast on television, who were clearly distressed. Mr Shen, a 22 year-old undergraduate, told Shin Min Daily News: "The orangutans simply do not belong in steel and concrete structures, and forcing them to do this for the cause of wildlife welfare is too unnatural." Netizen lankouli also pointed out" "Isn't the Zoo supposed to do their best and ensure a habitat for animals to be as close to nature? Ironically, the zoo is bringing the orangutans out to the city." The Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES) also received five complaint letters. ACRES has already persuaded the public to continue to voice their concerns, in the hope of arousing more attention from the public. It will also write to the Zoo, and set up discussions on the matter. Executive director for ACRES, Mr Louis Ng was quoted by Shin Min: "Although the orangutans are used to a life high up in the trees, the Singapore Flyer's cabin is an unnatural surrounding for them. It stresses them. "Running such a campaign is contradictory to the Zoo's aim, and may lead the public to believe they can do what they wilfully manipulate animals." But the Zoo has defended its action, saying that the primates have been brought to the Singapore Flyer a nyumber of times for "rehearsals" where they appeared to be calm and comfortable in the cabin. A spokesman for the Zoo had said that the orangutans were curious when they had their first look at the cabin, but were relaxed and calm afterwards. Merlin even began eating. The orangutans were also under the constant supervision of their keepers who were very familiar with their charges. The spokesman also added that the Zoo has not received any complaints from the public so far. When reporters visited the two primates yesterday morning, they seemed to be playing very happily. To date, the zoo has yet to receive any complaint letters. While interviewing, the reporter noticed that the Orang Utans were frolicking and having fun. Headline: "These Orang Utans are being tortured!" - News caster Zhang Hai Jie Channel 8, news caster Zhang Hai Jie mentioned in her blog that she was displeased with this move by the zoo. When she found out about this campaign, she disapproved it from the start. "Pardon my ignorance, but I have no idea what is the point in this. "It doesn't matter what they say, the message it is trying to convey or the way they are conveying it... What matters is getting attention?" She also said that "Since I was not on site, I would not know if the Orang Utans really panicked in fear. I don't have children as well, so I would not know if my kids would get nightmares after watching TV." At the end of her entry, she commented: "Who are you trying to scare? The Orang Utans? Or me?" Are U Better than Orang Utan [laugh]
  22. July 7, 2008 Airforce officer on maid abuse trial By Elena Chong, Courts Correspondent A REPUBLIC of Singapore Airforce officer went on trial on Monday for abusing his Indonesian maid. Tong Chew Wei, 31, is said to have used a broomstick to hit the left arm of Miss Nana Widayanti, 24, in December 2006. She had just worked at his Jurong West flat for 1 1/2 months when the first alleged abuse took place. Miss Widayanti, who is now staying in a shelter, testified that the second incident took place the following month when she was ironing clothes. Tong asked her to follow him to the kitchen but she refused as she knew he was going to hit her. He then pulled her by the hand and slammed the door against her hand while he was inside the room. Miss Widayanti said he then used the broomstick and hit her all over. She saw blood near her finger. She claimed that on a third occasion, Tong poured hot water from a cup on her legs while she was inside the toilet after his mother had complained about her work. Tong is also alleged to have stamped on her feet repeatedly while he was wearing his sandals on two separate occasions. In February, Miss Widayanti said her employer pinched her on the waist. He also used a broomstick to hit her body. Miss Widayanti said she was so famished one day that she took the baby's milk powder to eat after Tong refused to give her food. When Tong's wife found out, she scolded her and asked what she had eaten. But she denied taking anything. Mrs Tong then called her husband out from his shower and he assaulted her by pulling her hair and turning her around while she was bending down and elbowing her on the back. http://www.straitstimes.com/Latest%2BNews/...ory_255425.html why join RSAF, join WWE got better career.
