  1. wah !! now boon lay happening man !! Four men suspected to be involved in a fight at Boon Lay Drive have been arrested, police said on Friday (March 18). The four men, aged 17 to 21, are believed to be have used weapons to hurt two others. Police received a report about the fight at Block 191 Booon Lay Drive on Wednesday (March 16) night at 12.24am. Police officers found two men, aged 23 and 34, injured at the scene. They had been involved in a fight with four men whom they did not know, police said. Following investigations, the four suspects were arrested on the same day along Boon Lay Drive. Two knives believed to have been used in the incident were seized by the police. If found guilty of the charge of voluntarily causing hurt with dangerous weapon, the suspects can be jailed up to seven years. They may also be fined and/or caned.
  2. IPOH: Two boys and two girls in Form One have claimed that they were assaulted by a teacher at their school in Sitiawan after he became angry over an incident involving a playful act by a group of students. In the incident, which occurred at 5.20pm at SMJK Nan Hwa on Wednesday, the teacher, who is in his 30s, was said to have become irritable at a group of students who were playing with water outside a classroom. When one of the girls accidentally poured water on the teacher’s clothes, he punched her in the face, causing bruises. The teacher then entered his classroom to start his class. But, when he learnt that three students, including a girl, had forgotten to bring their notebooks, he became enraged and allegedly punched them. One of the boys was left bleeding after the assault. The students were sent for treatment to a hospital while their parents lodged police reports against the teacher. Chairman of the school board of governors Ling Leong Peng said the affected students were traumatised and had been advised not to attend school until action is taken against the teacher. Ling claimed that this was not the first time the teacher had resorted to violence. Last month, he allegedly punched a student at the school. He was also said to have hit the principal of another school where he was teaching earlier. He said the teacher’s previous cases were reported to the Manjung education office, but he claimed that no action was taken. “We want the authorities to suspend him and do something about his behaviour. This cannot go on,” he added. Manjung OCPD Asst Comm Jaafar Baba confirmed the incident.

  7. Four times the indulgence Pop-up gastro events were once limited to temporary restaurants or supper clubs with fashionably restricted seating. Invites were sometimes exclusive, with the clandestine dissemination of information regarding the venue, which could be someone’s home or a vacant shophouse. But business-wise, it also proffered a way to make a quick killing before monotony squeezed the life out of a concept’s novel charms. These days, while the general idea endures, pop-ups have grown to encompass a bloated range of juicy choices. Take Savour Events’ biggest local undertaking since the launch of its eponymous weekend food festival two years ago. Dubbed 4 X FOUR, this large-scale full-service pop-up restaurant (the largest in Singapore so far) debuts with four distinctive cuisines by five internationally acclaimed chefs. It’s a 20-day celebration encompassing nine lunch sessions and 20 dinner services taking place inside a purpose-built structure on Bayfront Avenue in the Marina Bay area, paired with light projection art and installations by local artists. Try to imagine a 7,000sq-ft, 8m-high state-of-the-art venue that can seat up to 100 guests. A draw is the chance to sample possibly one of the last meals by the team from the recently defunct Spanish restaurant Can Fabes, which once sported three Michelin stars in the hands of the late Santi Santamaria. From Nov 8 to 13, Santi’s daughter Regina leads the team that will be reunited with Peruvian chef Daniel Chavez, former head chef at Santi Singapore, offering restrained modern twists of classic Catalan cuisine. (Chavez, by the way, has his own restaurant, Ola — Cocina del Mar at the Marina Bay Financial Centre.) In contrast, Hong Kong’s Bo Innovation chef and founder Alvin Leung will be serving his provocative and decidedly radical interpretation of Chinese fare (Nov 20 to 23). “All dishes have been resized to main-portion sizes so we expect patrons to be happily full,” Leung said. 9. The entire country machiam a 9,826,675 sqkm shooting range. Really getting outa hand From CNA: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp...1255277/1/.html At least four dead in California shooting spree Posted: 20 February 2013 1311 hrs LOS ANGELES: A gunman killed three people in California on Tuesday, including at least one execution-style, in a series of shootings and carjackings before taking his own life, police said. At least two other people were injured as the gunman fired randomly on other vehicles on a freeway, before he shot and killed himself near the city of Orange, south of Los Angeles. The suspect was identified as 20-year-old Ali Syed, who was unemployed, had no criminal record, and was living at home with his parents and taking a class at a local college. In all there were three murders and five attempted murders. The motive for the attacks was being investigated, said Orange County sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino, in an afternoon update on the early morning shootings. He described Syed as "kind of a loner (who) doesn't have a lot of friends." The first killing was a woman found dead in the early hours in Syed's family home in Ladera Ranch. The woman was not known to his relatives, and police said they were working to identify her. Syed then fled in an SUV, and "multiple incidents" occurred as he drove to nearby Tustin, about 35 miles southeast of Los Angeles, said Tustin police department spokesman Paul Garaven. In one of the first carjackings, Syed appeared "very polite" as he walked up to a gas station customer. "I don't want to hurt you. I killed somebody and today's my last day. Give me your keys," he told the customer, according to Tustin police chief Scott Jordan. He then took the man's car and drove onto a nearby freeway, where he stopped and opened fire on passing vehicles, trying to get another car. In another carjacking, Syed got out of his vehicle and confronted a motorist in a BMW. "He orders him out of the vehicle, walks him to the side of the curb, and executes (the) victim," said Santa Ana Police Corporal Anthony Bertagna. Amormino said four people were confirmed dead including the gunman. "With each carjacking there was a shooting involved," he said. Amormino added that there was no active pursuit of the suspect's vehicle until it was located near Orange, where the gunman took his own life. "He stopped the vehicle and got out and shot himself," he said. - AFP/sf

  12. A half-naked woman was seen chasing four men in the early hours of yesterday morning in Clarke Quay. Shin Min Daily reported that a photo of the woman was taken by a surprised 16-year-old showing the woman naked from waist down. The woman, who looked like she was in her 20s, was reported to have the clothing on her upper body torn off and her lower body was completely naked. The report in the Chinese evening daily said she was holding her pants and underwear. Witnesses told Shin Min that there were not many people around at the time of 5.25am as she chased the four men, ignoring by-standers. Her friends were also running after her. When the woman reached the men, they became violent towards her by pushing her to the ground and kicking and punching her, according to witnesses. She fought back and tried to stand up, using her hands to block her face. Only when witnesses shouted that the police were coming was when they stopped. Police arrived on the scene and arrested the four men who are currently helping police with investigations. Three of the men are reported to be in their 20s while one man is in his 30s. The woman was also reported to have been seen entering a convenience store to buy a drink, while half-naked, earlier. She is described to have long hair and to have worn a dark-coloured top. 14. Fromk ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/...ory_719226.html Stuck with an expensive lemon on four wheels Published on Oct 3, 2011 MY FAMILY bought a Mercedes-Benz last year and within two weeks of the collection of the vehicle from Cycle & Carriage, the engine stalled. Assuming that it was our unfamiliar handling of the car, we dismissed the problem until the Merc stalled repeatedly. The new car was sent to the service centre many times. It was even checked by experts from Germany, but the stalling continued - it stalled eight times in a year. When we asked for a replacement, we were told repeatedly to monitor the vehicle after each servicing. We were promised that if the fault was not rectified, the matter would be brought to the attention of higher management. When we finally met the senior manager, we were denied a replacement. He justified his company's stand by stating that the car should be repaired within the warranty period. We were disappointed with the way the case was handled and it raised an important public issue: There is no law in Singapore to protect consumers like the lemon law in the United States. I am now saddled with yet another problem, which has to do with the air-conditioning of the car. Having paid so much money to own what we thought was a reliable marque, we have had more than our fair share of inconveniences, frustrations and time lost. Where can we seek help? Wendy Ng (Ms)
  15. If it's an engine with more than four cylinders, Volvo doesn't want it in its lineup. Within the next 10 years, the Swedish automaker plans to eliminate any engine options greater than four cylinders in an effort to reduce fuel consumption and C02 emissions. No more five- and six-cylinder mills. In their place, Volvo will employ three- and four-cylinder units in both gasoline and diesel form. The new engine family is called Volvo Environmental Architecture (VEA), and the automaker says the new powertrains will be nearly 200 pounds lighter than its current engines. In addition, the new mills will improve fuel economy by 35 percent. That will be an impressive boost, and Volvo believes it can accomplish this feat without a reduction in performance. The 1.5-liter three-cylinder and 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines will start to make their way into production models by 2013. By 2020, the entire lineup will be filled with them. 16. Last year, 85 cars were stolen in Singapore - or one car every four days on average. These cars are often left unlocked or with their keys in the ignition, making them easy targets. Older vehicles are especially susceptible because their worn-out locks make them easier to break into. 17. http://www.asiaone.com/News/AsiaOne%2BNews...324-269935.html The Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA) today announced that it will extend its suspension on the import of all fruits and vegetables to include Chiba and Ehime with immediate effect. Four samples of vegetables tested were found to contain radioactive contaminants. These were imported from the affected prefectures of Tochigi and Ibaraki, as well as Chiba and Ehime which are outside the affected areas. 161 samples of fresh produce such as seafood, fruits, vegetables and meat have been tested to date. From the shipment imported yesterday, the following were found to be contaminated: Mitsuba (Japanese wild parsley), Nanohana (Rape seed plant), Mizuna (Japanese mustard), and Perilla Leaf. All the affected shipment have been detained and will be disposed of. There is no cause for alarm, however, as an adult would need to consume 3.5 kg of these vegetables to receive a similar level of radiation exposure from one x-ray. According to the Ministry of Health, the short-term consumption of food at these detected levels of radioactive contamination does not pose a health hazard. AVA will continue to closely monitor and test food imports from Japan, and has extended the testing of food products from Japan to include high risk processed food such as infant formula and fresh dairy products such as milk, yogurt and cream.
  18. After months of speculation, Ferrari has officially unveiled the new Four concept ahead of its debut at the Geneva Motor Show. Essentially a preview of the 612 Scaglietti replacement, the FF features a bold Pininfarina design that mixes elements from the 458 Italia, California, and 599 GTB Fiorano. Most notably, the car is a shooting brake which affords 450 liters (15.9 cubic feet) of cargo capacity with the rear seats up and 800 liters (28.3 cubic feet) with the rear seats down. Underpinned by an all-new chassis, the Four has an independent suspension with magnetically adjustable dampers and Brembo carbon ceramic brakes. More importantly, the car is equipped, for the first time ever in a Ferrari, with an advanced Ruote Motrici (4RM) four-wheel drive system that is heavily rear-biased and "delivers record levels of performance on all terrains and in all conditions via continuous and intelligent predictive torque distribution to all four wheels." Under the hood, power is provided by a 6.3-liter (6,262 cc) V12 engine with 660 PS (485 kW / 651 hp) and 683 Nm (504 lb-ft) of torque. It is connected to a double-clutch transmission which enables the 1790 kg (3946 lb) concept to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 3.7 seconds and hit a top speed 335 km/h (208 mph). Furthermore, the FF has a combined fuel consumption of 15.4 L/100 km (15.3 mpg US) and CO2 emissions of 360 g/km. Source: Ferrari

  20. Aston Martin has done it. Porsche has too. Even Lamborghini toyed with the idea in the form of the Estoque concept. But according to chief executive Amedeo Felisa, Ferrari will never follow its rivals in making a four-door model. The closest we'll get, points out Felisa, is the Maserati Quattroporte, the four-door sports sedan from Ferrari's Modenese sister-company, which is set to gain a baby brother in the near future. Maranello once considered the idea of a four-door with the 1980 Pinin show car (above), but as close as it may have come, the concept never made it to production. Addressing the notion that Ferrari once swore it would never make a hybrid or use start-stop technology
  21. Arguably more than any other automaker, Volkswagen has been the subject of much debate regarding a potential F1 program over the past year or two. The German industrial giant is one of the largest never to have competed in the pinnacle motorsport series. But while previous reports suggested that VW could partner with a specific team, the company's interests now seem to extend far beyond the classical engine-supplier
  22. Maybe SG should scrap COE system and follow HK's system, bid for a car park before buying a car. http://www.asiaone.com/Motoring/Drivers/St...412-209879.html "Mercedes S-Class, Mercedes SLK, a Jaguar and a Ssangyong"
  23. When Jaguar first introduced the XF here in the States, no one batted an eye when the car only came in V8 flavors. After all, a luxury sedan demands eight cylinders, right? Sort of. Skip across the Atlantic, and buyers have less interest in a fuel-swilling eight pot. Instead, the luxo-barges of the old country typically run smaller, more efficient diesel mills. Except in Jaguar's case, the company only offers a V6 oilburner in the XF line. Word has it that the big cat is out to fix the issue. Starting this fall, Europeans are likely to start seeing a twin-turbo 2.2-liter four-cylinder diesel engine crop up on the option sheet. The powerplant is being refitted from Land Rover Freelander (LR2) duty, but will feature quite a bit more power and a new start/stop system to help keep fuel consumption low. Will they bring it to the States? Sure, right after Michael Jackson rises from the grave to run as Sarah Palin's VP candidate for 2012.
  24. Four ways to bring down flat prices http://www.straitstimes.com/ST%2BFor...ry_430779.html I APPLAUD the new measures by the Government to curb speculation in the property market and reinstate the Government Land Sales Programme. However, they do little to alleviate the structural problems at the root of the resale HDB market and the frustrations of many home seekers. It is too easy to blame cash over valuation (COV) for the rampant rise in resale prices or repeat continuously that resale HDB flats are affordable. Four measures could be taken to significantly improve the supply of resale HDB flats and thus lower prices. HDB flats should be affordable housing only for genuine home owners who occupy the flats. They should not be used for investment or rental income. The resale market is still tight because many owners, who have already moved out, are simply holding on to their property or hoping for a collective sale. If owners do not live in their flats any more, they should be put on the market immediately. There should be an income and assets cap for owners of HDB flats. If the owners are very successful in life after buying an HDB flat, they should leave their property on reaching a certain threshold and sell it. It is not right that families with multiple properties and very high salaries are able to hold on to their HDB flats. Have a staggered income ceiling instead of a blanket one of $8,000, applicable across all HDB flats ranging from $200,000 to $600,000. For example, have an $8,000 income ceiling for flats valued below $400,000, a $10,000 ceiling for flats valued above that and below $600,000, and $12,000 ceiling for flats valued above $600,000. Take property agents out of the equation. HDB should stimulate and facilitate direct owner-buyer contact. I urge HDB to consider these measures to tackle the problem at its root and let go of its free-property-market thinking. Lim Hing Kok WHAT DO U ALL THINK OF HIS SUGGESTIONS?
