  2. This stance will change the price of goods and services in SG. I think it is a necessary policy move at some juncture, but the effects on the population may not be very positive. http://www.straitstimes.com/business/economy/mas-sets-zero-appreciation-path-for-singdollar-with-switch-to-neutral-policy-stance Monetary Authority of Singapore sets zero appreciation path for Singdollar with switch to neutral policy stance Marissa Lee SINGAPORE - The central bank will set the rate of the Singapore dollar's appreciation to zero per cent, in a move to support economic growth against a dimmer global economic outlook since its last meeting. The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), which uses the currency rather than interest rates to guide the economy said on Thursday (April 14): "This is not a policy to depreciate the domestic currency, and only removes the modest and gradual appreciation path of the S$NEER policy band that was in place." The Singapore dollar tumbled 0.9 per cent to $1.36 levels to the US dollar on the news. At 8:36am, the Singdollar was trading at $1.3626 to the greenback from Wednesday's close of $1.3501. The Singapore dollar has strengthened more than 5 per cent versus the greenback this year as traders pushed back forecasts for when the Federal Reserve will raise US interest rates due to heightened global risks. Thursday's shift to a "neutral poliy stance" is a departure from the policy of modest and gradual S$NEER appreciation that the MAS had adopted since April 2010, after the last financial crisis. The Singapore dollar nominal effective exchange rate, or S$NEER, is a trade-weighted exchange rate in which the currencies of Singapore's larger trading partners bear more weight. The MAS move comes as a surprise to the market - 12 of 18 private sector economists polled by Bloomberg had expected the MAS to maintain its current policy stance at the scheduled bi-annual meeting, rather than ease. MAS eased policy in January and October last year, both times reducing the slope of the Singapore dollar's appreciation path. MAS said on Thursday: "Compared to expectations in October 2015, the Singapore economy is now projected to expand at a more modest pace this year, against the backdrop of a less favourable external environment. MAS Core Inflation is likely to pick up gradually over 2016 as the disinflationary effects of Budgetary and other one-off measures fade. However, the increase in core inflation will be milder than earlier expected." "CPI-All Items inflation will remain negative throughout 2016. Over the medium term, core inflation is expected to average slightly below 2 per cent." The central bank adjusts the pace of appreciation or depreciation of the Singdollar by changing the slope, width or centre of the band. It does not disclose details of the basket, the band, and the pace of appreciation or depreciation. The MAS holds its next policy meeting in October.
  3. Yale law professor and author Amy Chua, better known as the iron-fisted Asian-American Tiger Mom, is exporting her parenting style to Singapore, with the launch of an after-school enrichment center in the tuition-crazy city-state. The Keys Academy, which focuses both academics as well as soft skills such as creativity and leadership, aims to groom secondary-school students for university and "jobs of the future," with classes in robot-building and computer-coding as well as externships with global corporations and college admissions programs. "It's the best of both worlds," 52-year old Chua, who is one of four advisers to the center, told CNBC on Thursday. "I like that Keys Academy preserves the hard core 'you need to know the basics, and there's no way around that hard work.' But, [it equally focuses on] personal communication skills, how can you be interesting and dynamic, because that's really what it takes now." 4. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AytvUYy4P_c The next time someone asks you for a cigarette and you don't have one or aren't willing to give one out, make sure you let them down gently. Otherwise they may just set your car on fire. That's what one woman reportedly did at a gas station in Jerusalem. NBC News reports that an Israeli woman asked a man for a cigarette, and when he refused she held a lighter to the fuel filler and ignited the fumes. The entire incident was captured by the gas station's security cameras. In the video, we see the man pulling the pump nozzle out of the car when he realizes it's on fire. The nozzle spews flaming gasoline onto the ground, and the blaze quickly engulfs the rear of the car. Police say the fire was extinguished shortly after by gas station workers, and that the woman was arrested, though she denied setting the car on fire intentionally. The most important lesson to be learned from this video is to never spark up while filling up your car, but if there's another takeaway, it's to be kind to everyone you meet. We're not implying that the man in this video was rude in any way, but you just never know if you're dealing with a rational person or a complete psychopath. 6. Some how I suspect Prof Lim's shock-wage theory has a part to play in all these hasty follow-ups... Anyway glad these cleaners are finally getting attention from the so-called labour movement but unless it is law employers may not accept the "recommendation". And hope they keep to their word of looking into the low pay situation of other low-wage workers in other industries. 7. Wonder how much Mr Mohan is advertising to pay for this job? From ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Online...ory_757592.html Analyse skill sets of jobless to fine-tune intake of foreigners Published on Jan 20, 2012 I DISAGREE with the view that foreign workers are taking jobs away from citizens and suppressing the potential pay of Singaporeans (''Foreign talent policy had effect on income gap''; Tuesday). I have had a business in software services for more than 32 years and I have seen my staffing headcount drop to 15 from 65 because I offshored the work. My company is automated in every conceivable way possible but there is a minimum number of IT skilled staff we need. We advertise regularly for staff and only about 2 per cent of the applicants can pass the skills test that we set, and even then, just barely. In one case, the applicant took a toilet break and did not return for the test. The skill sets of the unemployed should be analysed so we can see which type of person is unable to obtain a job. Once that is established, the foreign worker quotas can be fine-tuned accordingly. The increase in the minimum salary for employment passes has, in certain categories, just increased employers' costs as suitable Singaporeans cannot be found. Harendra Mohan
  8. http://health.asiaone.com/Health/Health%2B...205-314401.html A man from Shaanxi, China, doused his daughter with kerosene before setting her on fire after an argument with his estranged wife. Chinese website ChinaSmack reported that the three-year-old girl suffers from burns on 14 per cent of her body. Third-degree burns make up 2.5 per cent of the damage while the remaining burns are second-degree ones. The girl, referred to as Niu Niu, is disfigured and her hands cannot function normally. On November 19, her father, Cao Xiaoming allegedly flew into a rage after he had a disagreement with his wife, Ms Xiao Juan over divorcing him. Ms Xiao said she wanted to leave him because of his bad temper, violent ways and excessive gambling. She said Cao would beat her if they had disagreements, sometimes using stools and sticks. Ms Xiao told ChinaSmack: "Whenever he runs out of money, he'll call me, and if I don't give it to him, I'll be beaten. Cao also stole and gambled away "good luck money" which Ms Xiao's family had given her when Niu Niu turned 100 days old. She added that she would give him all of her salary but he would not care for Niu Niu and her, sometimes leaving them without any food to eat. KNNBCCB!!!!!!

  12. To all the bros who are currently driving the Superb Ambition model with the Bolero headunit.....Anyone interested in upgrading to a Columbus set? I will be upgrading mine soon and my contact says there are two other sets available. Features of the Columbus as compared to Bolero as follows: -Plays DVD -Possible av input (good for those who are interested in adding in a digital tv tuner) -20gb harddisk (aactually i think its 30gb but 10gb is reserved for maps) -In-built GPS It does not have the 6-disc in built CD changer nor does it play SDHC cards which means it can only read SD cards up to 2gb capacity.....but the in built harddisk more then makes up for it. Note however that the sets are used but the condition is almost 99%. Total cost including installation will be approx SGD$1500. Anyone interested?

  14. A Turkish singer just set a land speed record, making him the fastest man on the planet when his Ferrari F430 averaged 182 miles per hour during a record run down a runway at an airport in eastern Turkey. Now, if 182 mph doesn't sound fast enough to set a world land speed record, know that the driver was blind... and alone in the car. Metin Senturk became the fastest blind man driving solo with his Guinness-verified speed of 292.89 kilometers per hour (182 mph). Senturk was followed down the runway by his driving coach, former rally driver Volkan Isik, who relayed instructions to Senturk via radio. The driver is a pop singer in Turkey who has been blind since the age of three. He said that the record run, "was really hard, like a dance with death." When Senturk emerged from his borrowed car, he was told by the Guinness people that he had bested the old record of 284 kph, held by a British bank manager. In case you were wondering, this unaccompanied record is about 20 mph slower than the record set by Hein Wagner of South Africe, who had his coach riding shotgun when he drove a Mercedes-Benz SL65 Black Series to a tick over 200 mph last October.

  17. SINGAPORE : Member of Parliament (MP) for Yio Chu Kang, Seng Han Thong, is in hospital with 10 per cent burns after a man poured flammable liquid on him and set him on fire on Sunday. Both men are now at the Singapore General Hospital. Yio Chu Kang Community Club was filled with police and Civil Defence officers who were going about their investigations, but reporters were barred from entering the premises. It is believed that a 70
