  4. CNA news report : NDP 2012 to reflect Singaporeans' love for country By Joanne Chan | Posted: 25 April 2012 1648 hrs SINGAPORE: This year's National Day Parade (NDP) hopes to be a time for Singaporeans to reflect on their love for the country, with the theme "Loving Singapore, Our Home" . And this year's organisers hope to get Singaporeans to express their love for the country, through video or photo contests. The man tasked with running the parade smoothly certainly knows the theme well. The parade's executive committee chairman, Colonel Desmond Tan, said: "From the smallest thing like having a nice breakfast with my family, to the moments I stepped down from a long flight and coming home to Changi Airport, these are the moments I cherish. "But most of all, Singapore is where I'm born, and where I grew up and where I lived out my dreams and this is where my family and friends are." Singapore's 47th birthday celebration promises to be a visual treat, bringing back old favourites, such as the combined school choir, last seen two years ago. Other crowd favourites include the marching contingents, the flag fly-past and the Red Lions freefall display. The parade will also feature a salute to 45 years of National Service. I used to be proud of Singapore, serve my NS with pride, endure all tough training whether in rain or shine, whether chiong 'Peng Kang Hill' or Marsiling Hills, going weeks without bath. Nowadays, hot or rainy weather, training cancelled... So proud to own a 5 rooms HDB flat back in the 80's but now, I am worried for my children whether they can affort a 3 ~ 4 rooms HDB flats, So proud to own a 7 seater car years back but now, feel sad when my oversea friends ask me why the piece of 'Paper' value could have fetch them 2 or 3 2000cc cars in their coutries. A less than 1.5cc car cost almost S$90K ??? Quote what Colonel Desmond Tan, said: "From the smallest thing like having a nice breakfast with my family, to the moments I stepped down from a long flight and coming home to Changi Airport, these are the moments I cherish. "But most of all, Singapore is where I'm born, and where I grew up and where I lived out my dreams and this is where my family and friends are." Singapore is Where I'm born, thats a facts, Where I grew Up, no choice as not born with 'silver spoon' & have to work my way up and lastly Where I lived out my dreams, have too not where to go as I set up my family here. Am I going to get 'nightmare' instead of dreams in coming years? HDB price soars, car price soars, medical fee soars, dental fee lagi soars, food price soars, Uni fee soars, public transportations fee soars (although at a slower pace), my CPF minimum deposit also soars to $131,000/-, age to withdraw CPF going up.... The theme "Loving Singapore, Our Home" , I will try my very best, no promises...
  5. A driver in KL wrote:- On Christmas Eve, I decided against going out to party cos everywhere would be packed and instead went to me mate's place in Bandar Sunway for a game of Mahjong. We finished at about 4.00am and I took the LDP highway from Bandar Sunway back to Taman Tun. It was a great evening, not raining, no car on the road and I made a tidy sum at mahjong and I was crusing at 80kph, perfect day. As I was approaching the flyover near Damansar Jaya I glance at my rear mirror and notice two cars coming at tremendous speed & told meself, shall I drop to 3 gear and say Warp Speed 2 Mr. Sulu? I decided against it and move to the inside lane. On entering the flyover the 1st car overtook me (Proton Satria) at speed followed rapidly by the 2nd Proton, which swerved into my lane to overtake the 1st car. I had no choice but to swerve to avoid hitting the 2nd Proton. as I corrected my car the back wheel hit the kerb and I flipped over to the secondary road which takes you to Damansara Jaya. I think my car must have rolled over at least 5 times. Finally it came to a stop, oops I didn't wore my seat belt. 1st thing I did was check both my legs, they were ok, so was my arms. I check my head and body, there was no blood. I open the door (later found out it was the only door that can open) and walk out. I look at my car and it look quite similar to a Lotus Esprit kekeke. I must have been in shock but it don't half seem like eternity b4 the first of many tow truck operators arrived. They towed the car to USF (total loss). I went and look at me car today and tell myself how in heaven's name did I walk away from a wreck like this without a scratch. Hey my Guardian Angel was with me. I'm not angry or upset but (tham choon toi/ bang balls) abit lah. The people who caused the accident got off scot free. On hindsight I thought if I had say Warp 2 Mr. Sulu maybe nothing would happened. Moral of the story : Driving slowly doesn't mean you will not get into an accident. Speed don't kill!! Humans do !!! Its gonna take a few months b4 I can get my claim from the insurance, I'll buy another Airtrek Turbo, a silver one this time. Meanwhile you guys have a Happy New Year. Mine would be just as Happy, hey I'm still in one piece.

  8. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong took a swipe at the opposition Workers' Party's contributions in Parliament so far as he dropped in on Punggol East on Saturday morning. "I don't see any strong views or alternatives being presented by the opposition, whether it's the NCMPs or the elected MPs," said the PM during a brief walkabout at Rivervale Plaza. "We are doing things on a national level," he added, building on the same vein as several other People's Action Party speakers during a rally the previous night on Friday. Then, Education Minister Heng Swee Keat and others reminded voters of the party's track record since the 2011 General Election, with major policies announced in housing, transport, education and healthcare. PM Lee, in his first walkabout in Punggol East since by-elections were announced, said voters need to bear this in mind when they go to polls. "Ultimately, choose the person who can serve you well in Punggol East and also broadly in Singapore," he said to reporters after a short 15-minute walkabout around Rivervale Plaza. There are currently eight opposition voices in Parliament -- Png Eng Huat, the MP from Hougang as well as five from Aljunied GRC (Low Thia Kiang, Sylvia Lim, Chen Show Mao, Pritam Singh and Muhamad Faisal Manap . Gerald Giam and Yee Jenn Jong are Non-constituency members of parliament, and do not have full voting rights. PM Lee, who is also secretary-general of the PAP, said that its candidate Dr Koh Poh Koon has the potential to reach greater heights if he wins come Polling Day next Saturday. "But I told him his first priority is to fight and win in PE, win the support and trust of residents," said PM Lee, who was accompanied by Acting Minister for Social and Family Development Chan Chun Sing and other party members. "When he is ready, and when I judge he is ready... I will be appointing him to a suitable political office but we will decide what, later on." Dr Koh did not accompany him for the walkabout as he was meeting residents elsewhere in the area, but both met earlier in the morning during a breakfast meeting at the PAP Punggol East education centre. PM Lee also assured residents that the upgrading works at the much-troubled Rivervale Plaza, which has beset by construction delays after the main contractor went bust, will be done by the middle of the year.
  9. Please members, check your credit card(s) statement every month promptly. I received a credit card statement from UOB and was shocked that another credit card was issued to me last year of which I had not even seen it or the card being posted to me. I only had one UOB card of which is link to Metro where I always shop. The credit card numbers stated in the statement was not even my sub-card. The statement requires me to pay for an annual fee of $192.80c for a credit card which I had not seen it ... Called UOB to check on the status of that credit card on Tues @1145hrs and was told that a Customer Service Officer from the marketing department will contact me within 1/2 an hour with regards to my querries. Waited for 28hrs and nothing heard. Called yesterday at 1630hrs and another female officer answered my call. Asked her to explain how the credit card was issued to me when I had not signed any application form and who is holding to this credit card? She asked whether I received any calls with regards to any credit card and I informed that every month, received many calls from different banks with regards to credit cards and I always reject all calls. She informed that its was their marketing side who had issued the card. I asked her why was the card issued in the first place and even if it was through telephone, they always follow up with official form for customers to sign before any card is issued. I told her this should not be the way for marketing side to boost their sales. I even quoted to her that even now whilst I am talking to her, she asked me some personal questions to confirm I am the principal card owner and what had happen to that credit card which was issued as no one made any confirmation ? She didn't even know who is keeping that credit card. Lucky no sales transactions on that credit card but the big question is Where or Who is holding that credit card? She promised to cancel that card and ask me to ignore the payment for the annual fee. So members, beware especially those who pay by GIRO and failed to check your monthly statement. Once deducted, very troublesome and time consuming to cancel it. If this could be done at the marketing side, there are no assurance that the card would not been taken out for a shopping spee by someone and the poor principal owner had to pay if he does not check his credit card statement.

  12. Michael Schumacher was optimistic that Mercedes could carry its qualifying form into the Malaysian Grand Prix after securing his best starting spot since returning to Formula 1 as he went third quickest at Sepang. The seven-time world champion was beaten only by the two McLarens, and held a provisional front row spot until deposed by an improvement from Jenson Button. Mercedes ran third and fourth early in the Australian GP but struggled with high tyre degradation. Schumacher was halted by an early gearbox failure, while his team-mate Nico Rosberg dropped down the order before a last-lap collision with Sergio Perez's Sauber consigned him to 12th. Asked if he was worried about another slump in race pace on Sunday, Schumacher replied: "I guess all of us have certain concerns because these temperatures are pretty new to us. "We had some preparation yesterday. We have done a decent job. We have learned a lesson in Australia, reacted and the boys in factory have done a great job so I am looking forward to tomorrow." He added: "I feel good about it and we have chosen a car that should work better in the race - that is the situation that I hope will play out tomorrow." Schumacher said that no matter what happened in the race, Mercedes' pace so far in both Australia and Malaysia proved it was in substantially better shape than a year ago. "It is quite an achievement to see who is behind us," he said. "We still have to catch up a bit forward. "We are reasonably close, not miles away like we were last year so it is up to us to have a good development programme, work methodically and stay focused and let's see what the season will bring us." http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/98322

  17. I think this is bulls**t. Pple can't get a taxi that's why have to book. With all the cabbies doing stunts, one cannot get a taxi just by flagging along the road side anymore. http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/S...ory_625208.html. Jan 17, 2011 More book taxis in stronger economy By Chong Zi Liang THE number of passengers choosing to book a taxi instead of flag one down soared last year compared to previous years. The two taxi operators with the largest fleet in Singapore both reported a steep spike in the number of bookings they handled last year. Leading the pack was transport operator ComfortDelGro, with 24 million taxi bookings last year, a 37 per cent jump from 17.5 million bookings in 2009. It is a record high for the company which first launched the service in 1996. ComfortDelGro has more than 15,000 taxis. TransCab, the taxi operator with the second-largest fleet at about 3,800 taxis, managed only 300,385 bookings last year.
  18. I was thinking how to profit from the new rule. Discussion with my friends and colleagues. Fact: It seems that gov is restricting people from owning two or more properties from Monday onwards. Also limiting HDB from being rented out easily (HDB must stay 5 years, cannot rent out etc etc). So there will be generally be a reduced rental units on the market come 2011 as people are not easily allowed to buy extra units. Fact: The problem is that RENTAL from FT/PR/new citizens are supporting the rental market for the past 5-7 years. If there were no rental support from this group, I cannot believe how the hell speculators are able to rent out their extra units to earn rental incomes for the past years. So how can this rental demand going to disappear from now onwards? I mean there WILL still be incoming FT/PR/new citizens yearly right? If these group of people are NOT able to find available HDB/Condo rooms to rent, where will they go to? So if suddenly the 'poor' are prevented from owning 2 or more extra properties, then I forsee there will be a lack of spare HDB/CONDOs for rental come 2011 onwards.....HOW? I think rental rates will shoot up the roof when available rental units are cut due to lesser people owning 2 or more properties. It will be a vivcious cycle, as it will then become worthwhile to once again for speculator to risk to buy additional properties to earn the higher rental income. So looking at the impending reducation of HDB/CONDO units for rental purpose. So I have come to the conclusion that I will ask my father mother myself to divorce and separetely each buy additonal HDB. And rent it out to FT/PR in 2011. HUAT AH.

  20. Yep, my ride hit 125,000 km in 3.5 years. Me and my better half do tag style driving that is why the heavy use. Overall car running smooth. My mother recently drove my car and first time behind the wheels of a light pressure turbo car and she was impressed. Although she did not like the lowered springs and low profile tyres, but she like the car and the drive. I did the usual servicing and also all the oil changes on time therefore car has been running well. Externally will have to do some touch ups than the car would be looking good for the next 100,000 km. Internally the car still looks good as I often upkeep it internally. Anyone care to share about your ride?
  21. Aug 23, 2008 HDB resale market strong Deals of more than $700K are still being done, with demand fuelled by PRs and new families. By Joyce Teo WHILE sentiment in the private homes market remains gloomy, the market for Housing Board resale flats offers another story. Deals of $700,000 and above are still being done this year, after 'record deals' of more than $700,000 first surfaced during last year's boom, though these are few and far between. The good news for sellers is that prices continue to rise, pushing up valuations. Volume is seen remaining healthy as home seekers continue to check out resale flats, largely oblivious to the credit crisis consuming the world, market watchers said. Demand for HDB resale flats comes mostly from newly formed families and new permanent residents (PRs), they said. Mr Leong Sze Hian, president of the Society of Financial Service Professionals, thinks that HDB prices are still rising because there is not enough supply to meet demand.

  24. Hi all.. Need some feedback and advice for my ride.. It's registered in june 2007.. bought from C&C.. Since day 1, the engine has been vibratibg violently at idling rpmwhen the alternator cuts power,, sometimes to the extent of almoststalling Feedback to C&C and they keep adjusting the rpm which doesn't cure the problem Recently, they changed my throttle body as an improved version of the throttle came in from Japan. The vibrations were reduced but once in a while the vibrations can be quite strong but not as bad as before. One thing to note is my car's aircon is weak, not that cold on a sunny afternoon. I do know that Lancer's aircon is not that powerful but my passengers keep complaining it's weak. Is there anything i can do to further reduce the vibrations when at idling? C&C has checked and found the engine mountings and alternator to be ok and diagnosed the problem as a manufacturing defect. They claim other owners face the same issue. Thanks
