  1. StarHub job cuts result of strategic transformation plan Sources: https://www.straitstimes.com/forum/letters-in-print/starhub-job-cuts-result-of-strategic-transformation-plan We thank Mr Tan Kar Quan for his comments (Laying off staff not always the best strategy, May 25). Telecommunications companies globally and in Singapore are being disrupted by issues ranging from digitalisation and cloud-based services to changing consumer preferences and the ongoing convergence in information and communications technologies (ICT). As mobile, broadband and content penetration rates are already very high in Singapore, StarHub has to continually transform its operating model and seek growth in adjacent segments, such as cyber security and enterprise ICT solutions. As part of our strategic transformation plan aimed at consistently delivering a better customer experience, we embarked on simplifying and redesigning our company structure, product offerings and internal processes last year. This regrettably led to a reduction of roles and colleagues from our team - reducing our workforce is not our strategic intent. Increasing our capabilities, accelerating growth, offering a better brand experience, and adapting to the realities of the rapidly changing market we operate in are among targets at the core of our strategy. To this end, our transformation plans will always include the reskilling, retraining and redeployment of our employees to be able to handle future functions. We will also continue to explore opportunities to accelerate our growth through the launch of innovative services and the acquisition of companies. The acquisition of companies offers us access to services, technologies, customers and new talent that otherwise will require many years of development with no certainty of success. A successful business strategy is inclusive of many growth initiatives, home-grown and acquired, and leverages the collective wisdom and capabilities of everyone at StarHub. Peter Kaliaropoulos Chief Executive Officer StarHub

  5. [extract] J.D Power and Associates has released the result of the study on the overall dependability of three-year vehicles sold in the US. Some 31,000 car owners of 2009 model-year vehicles were polled regarding the problems they encountered with their ride over the last 12 months. From the 32 brands included in the survey, 25 improved their scores with Lexus topping the chart with 86 problems per 100 vehicles (89 PP100). This is followed by Porsche with 98 PP100; Cadillac with 104 PP100; Toyota with 104 PP100 and Scion with 111 PP100. Another feather in Lexus

  7. A good results...with PAP still clinching more than 80 seats. We must all remember that this is a result of singaporeans voting... so which means the majority of singaporeans (including me) approve of what PAP has done. this is despite all the opposition we see
  8. Bismarck

    Freak Result

Any lost for PAP in GE - Freak result. Singaporeans that voted for opposition and cause PAP to lose - Freaks Is that what PAP is trying to imply? We can see that if PAP is doing such a GOOD JOB, then why are they afraid of freak result? Surely people will vote PAP and freak result wont happen isnt it? Or is it because Singaporeans need to be "educated" because Singaporeans dont know how to vote during election? Every single general election, the PAP will say freak result might happen if Singaporeans dont vote properly. IF that is the case, then what is the point of election? Since Singaporeans "dont know how to vote"? What is the point of giving Singaporeans the right to vote? Wayang democracy is it? Instead of talking about their manifesto, policies to implement in future to fulfill the promises in their manifesto, talk about issues that concern Singaporeans, yesterday and today the PAP keep talking about freak result and the need to know that voting is serious etc. We can see that the PAP still like to talk down on Singaporeans and tell Singaporeans how to do this and that and treat Singaporeans like kids. I think Singaporeans are indeed like kids because we allow the PAP to manipulate us into accepting ERP, COE, high salary for the ministers, and allow FT to come in like nobody's business.
  9. What will you do then?

  14. Home > Breaking News > Singapore > Story Feb 10, 2009 Jailed for contraband tobacco By Elena Chong A CHINA national was jailed for 23 months on Tuesday for having contraband tobacco and medicinal products. Huang Kexin, 63, pleaded guilty to having 270 kg of duty unpaid tobacco and not paying Goods and Services Tax of $6,800 on the 150 packages found in a rented room in Lorong 16 Geylang on Jan 16. The unpaid duty amounted to $95,040. He also admitted to possessing for retail sale African Black Ant capsules and Power 1 Singapore tablets containing controlled substances. A district court heard that a team of Health Sciences Authority and police officers raided his room and seized a variety of medicines and tobacco. The green tobacco packages were labelled as Chinese tea. Huang told investigators that he had bought the tobacco two days earlier from an unknown China national at $14 a package and had intended to resell them at $20. The medicinal products he had in his possession could only be sold in a registered pharmacy or under the supervision of a pharmacist. Under the Customs Act, he could have been fined up to 20 times the amount of customs duty or tax evaded or $10,000, whichever is greater, and/or jailed for up to three years. Huang could have been fined up to $5,000 and/or jailed for up to two years on each of the Medicines Act charges. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  19. I received an email from a freaked dad, some mass mail kinda thing, what do you think of this Dad?: For those who might have kids who were 12 years old, it was definitely an exciting day for many yesterday, especially the Mom and Dads out there. Why was it so? It was the release of results for PSLE (Primary School Leaving Examination). I was there with my son Brandon to collect his PSLE results. Guess what, he had an amazing result. He managed 178 points. For a moment, I nearly freaked out. He did not manage to get into the Express Stream as the cut off point was 188. As for me, I was kind of stunned initially as I had managed 4As and an aggregate of 241 when I took my PSLE 22 years back. As Brandon stared at the result slip, tears started dropping from the side of his eyes. He was devastated but deep inside his heart, he knew that he had not made the necessary effort. Of course I felt a little bad as well as I had been really busy with my business and had neglected him. If your kid had scored 178, I think you wouldn't be sleeping well at night. You must be probably preparing the cane and planning a whipping session. You would probably be hurling abuses at your kid or telling him or her how disappointed you were...not me. Guess what I told him? I said, "Brandon, welcome to the real world. You hadn't suffered any setback in life yet. This is the harsh reality of life. What you sow is what you reap and you should stare hard at the reactions of the other pupils. Many of them are enjoying the success of their efforts while you were distracted by the games and tv. It is better for you to suffer the setback now than later." This is not the end, I told him. I then asked him, "Are you a loser?". He said No and I told Brandon, "You are a loser now! You have a choice, you can choose to be only a loser now or you can be a loser for life. I was a loser once but I changed myself and got back onto track." In life there will be a lot of setbacks. When you encounter them, just look at the bright side. Overcome your setbacks and you will end up into higher ground. Get swallowed by it and you will be a goner.
