  2. Just responding to the current situation to begin a chat on this. Generally psychiatric illness can be classified into The BAD, The SAD, and the MAD... You can also have a mix of conditions, such as borderline personalities, or a bipolar condition. If one has a serious psy issue, you need treatment by a psychiatrist, who may be assisted by a psychologist. A psychiatrist is a qualified doctor, who can diagnose, and more importantly treat a patient. The treatment can be in the form of words, such as counselling, psychological methods and medical or even ECT: Electroconvulsive treatment A psychologist aids by using non medical methods, such as listening, and active methods like flooding and other ways to help. There are POC (Psychiatric Outpatient Clinics) s to visit. IMH may be too scary or a label for them.... These are Government subsidised clinics nested within the polyclinics. Usually in a quiet corner and they get poly MCs so their bosses won't know otherwise. IIRC, Bedok, Tampines and Geylang poly have it - we had names for them - BePOC, TamPOC and GeyPOC Private help is always available, but it's costly.. but very private. Remember, illness must be correlated with the social context. Eg mediums are part of our society, so a person who claims he / she can talk to the Monkey God isn't necessarily mad. Medications can be taken orally, injected and you also have ECT. Training of a psychiatrist requires someone to take the basic degree, then enter residency for it and receive specialist training. Apart from IMH aka Woodbridge, there is NUH, which has a unit, and now TTSH too. It isn't a glamour practice, but it is needed. Psy illness isn't that uncommon, up to 1 in 150 can have it, just in various forms and at various parts of the spectrum. You can have traits, eg obsessive compulsive traits, eg, checking all your car doors once or twice before you can walk off, but you remain functional, all the way to a disorder, where you can't stop washing your hands, and even end up without skin because of hand washing.

  4. Just like donkey years back, scientists once said that lard is bad for our health but over the past few years, researches have shown that lard is a good source of fats that support a healthy heart. What about MSG? Isn’t it bad for me? Source: https://www.channelnewsasia.com/singapore/what-lower-sodium-salt-msg-himalayan-pink-salt-sea-salt-2983936 For years, MSG has been viewed as unhealthy as a small percentage of the population reported that they had symptoms like headaches and increased thirst after consuming food at Chinese restaurants, said Dr Bhaskharan. However, newer research has questioned the accuracy of its supposed adverse effects on health, she said. MSG, or monosodium glutamate, is a flavour enhancer derived from L-glutamic acid, which is naturally found in foods like tomatoes, mushrooms and onions, nutritionists said. It also can be artificially made via fermentation using corn or sugar beets. MSG is a non-essential amino acid, which means that our body can produce it and doesn’t need to get it from food, said Dr Bhaskharan. It contains about 12 per cent sodium, which is lower than regular salt. Even though it has less sodium, it can enhance salt perception, and the flavour of food by adding umami, which is a taste that helps to intensify the meaty, savoury flavour, said Ms Stephen. This means that just a small amount is needed to elevate the overall flavour of healthier foods with lower sodium content, she added. Research has also shown that MSG can be used as a suitable replacement for some salt in packaged foods like snacks and soups, which can help to reduce their sodium content by 30 to 50 per cent. “This provides good potential to use MSG to formulate healthier, ‘better-for-you’ food products without compromising on taste. This in turn can propel consumers to choose more nutritious food options and positively impact health,” Ms Stephen said.

  6. I think we need more effort in stopping Dengue. The more I think about it, the more I think we over-reacted for Covid. 12 people died from Dengue, 24 people died from Covid. Are we going to throw 50 billion for stopping Dengue??? 11. I am wondering how irritated are you by motor air pollution? I jog everyday and I LOVE the fact that the mini bus in my estate has turned electric. Previously, it will always spew smoke on to me.... When driving on the road, I notice that there are smoky lorries who emit like a smoke screen to hide themselves. I always wonder how did these vehicles even drive in Singapore. https://www.nea.gov.sg/our-services/pollution-control/air-pollution/air-pollution-regulations It is supposed to be illegal to drive them and yet I see them sometimes. I also realised there is an app, myEnv, to report such vehicles and I am going to try to report them to see if it helps. Just hoping to increase the awareness of this app so hopefully we can get a greener Singapore earlier than later. I am just wondering how fresh the air will be when there is no emissions from motor vehicles... Will it be like in the mountains fresh?
  12. Who have brought this? Good? https://www.nonda.co/products/smart-vehicle-health-monitor Nonda ZUS Smart Vehicle Health Monitor: Give your car a health check any time https://www.straitstimes.com/tech/give-your-car-a-health-check-any-time The Nonda ZUS Smart Vehicle Health Monitor is a small Bluetooth adapter that connects to your car's On-Board Diagnostics II (OBD-II) port. The OBD-II is your car's on-board computer that monitors important information, such as emission, engine coolant temperature, mileage, and ignition. Its port is usually used by professional mechanics to troubleshoot vehicle issues. And now, you can monitor your car's vital statistics at your convenience with this adapter. Just plug it into the OBD-II port, pair it with your smartphone using the ZUS app (available on Android and iOS) and you will be able to keep track of your car's health in real time. The most difficult part is locating the hidden OBD-II port. It is usually located behind the dashboard, above the brake pad or accelerator pad (transport regulations dictate it must be located 0.6m from the steering wheel for easy access). Once you find it, pop in the adapter and start your car's engine. Launch the ZUS app at the same time. Note that you will need an account to use the app - either sign up for a new Nonda account or use your Facebook account. Upon logging in, tap on Add Device at the top right corner of the Dashboard window of the app and choose the ZUS Smart Vehicle Health Monitor option. The pairing is almost immediate. The Dashboard will show real-time data of your car's current speed, top speed, current engine revolution, top engine revolution and engine coolant temperature. It is great to know such data, so as not to "over-rev" the car's engine. The app also has Car Finder, Mileage and Safety Centre options. Car Finder remembers where you parked your car, while Mileage automatically logs your drives in terms of distance travelled, time taken and mileage cost. It has pre-set mileage rates for the United States, Britain, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. You can key in your mileage rate by calculating the cost of petrol, based on your car's fuel consumption. It is a good way to keep track of your fuel expenditure. You are allowed up to 60 free mileage logs a month, but you can have unlimited mileage logs via a monthly subscription of US$2.99 (S$4.09). The Safety Centre option is probably the highlight of the adapter. It allows you to identify potential issues by performing a number of checks, which encompass emission, ignition system, speed and idling control, computer circuit and gear box. I am glad my three-year-old car passed all the checks. But I cannot verify how accurate the checks are as the app just shows the list of checks being done. There is no data associated with the checks - for example, the gear ratio is not shown. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuqzCD649Z0 It saves you trips to the mechanic by giving you real-time telemetry and allows you to perform checks any time you want. 13. MediShield premiums could rise, Health Minister says Updated 02:29 PM Mar 07, 2012 SINGAPORE - Health Minister Gan Kim Yong said MediShield premiums are due for an increase soon. Mr Gan, speaking in Parliament at the Committee of Supply debates today, said the premiums "need to be adequate to sustain MediShield members' claims and to fund future liabilities under the scheme". "As MediShield premiums are set to be sustainable for a five-year period and the last increase was in 2008, we are due for the next update soons," said Mr Gan, noting that MediShield has paid out 21 per cent more in claims each year between 2008 and last year, during which time the premiums collected grew by only 10 per cent a year. "Ultimately, MediShield operates on a not-for-profit basis, with premiums actuarially calculated to cover expected payouts and meet risk and reserve requirements. The reserves ensure that MediShield will be able to honour policyholders' future claims." He said a 45-year-old may see a premium increase of S$7 per month, with younger age groups seeing a smaller increase, while a 75-year-old could see an increase of S$25 per month. To offset these increases, a one-time Medisave top-up of up to S$33 per month was announced in the recent Budget for all Singaporean policyholders to help cushion the impact of the increase. In addition, older policy holders who are beyond the re-employment age of 65 will receive direct and long-term assistance via Medisave top-ups under the GST voucher scheme, up to S$37.50 per month which can offset the premium increase in full. 16. https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/world/exhausted-dutch-minister-leading-coronavirus-fight-quits-12558254 Not meant to be a political thread. but just want to give thanks to the man in charge of overseeing the situation in sg. The face of COVID-19 in Sg is that of National Development Minister Lawrence Wong. Maybe nt noticed by many before the task force was setup, surely well noticed by all now. Not an easy task to be the one delivering all the bad news every day. From dorscon orange, to the panic buying situation, to announcing all the new travel advisories, pleading with sgreans not to go overseas this period, taking questions from the press, being asked tough questions like will sg be seeing triple figures soon since 47 cases recorded, still kept a calm face throughout. speaks well, good english, measured response. stil cannot escape from all the negative responses from public saying wayang etc but majority of sgreans dont thinklike that... lawrence wong has been seen as the main person overseeing all the press conferences instead of our health minister. sai gang warrior. i give credit where credit is due. it is a stressful job this period. wish him best of health. http://theindependent.sg/lawrence-wong-gets-high-marks-from-netizens-for-coronavirus-crisis-response/ Singapore— National Development Minister Lawrence Wong, who co-chairs a multi-ministry task force specially formed to combat the coronavirus outbreak, has quietly been winning over many Singaporeans for how he has handled the crisis, with even normally critical netizens calling him “nuanced,” “measured,” and “better than the rest of the team.” People have even noted how the tech-savvy minister uses his smartphone as a tool during press conferences. Some have even called for him to be the next Deputy Prime Minister, and there are those who have compared other ministers to Mr Wong quite unfavourably.

  18. Safety Moment is a tool, used by some companies, to maintain a high level of awareness towards Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) issues, often in relation to the company operations. It involve the sharing of an EHS topic, usually by safety representative within the team, prior to the start of a work shift and/or meeting. To make it effective, such briefing / discussion are kept short and sharp (typically lasting just 1 - 3 minutes), with the aim of recognizing hazards and risks, reinforcing the importance of health and safety, and get everyone gearing towards a positive safety culture. I think it will be useful for MCF to have one, and let me start the ball rolling. Topic for today: Do not leave the engine of your vehicle running when it is stationary In accordance to section 21 of Environmental Protection and Management (Vehicular Emissions) Regulations, vehicle driver shall stop the engine, when the vehicle is stationary for reasons other than traffic conditions. Failing to do so shall constitute to an offence under the said regulations. While it might look like the authority (NEA) is finding fault with motorist, but in reality, leaving the engine on for an extended period have the following impact: 1) Polluting the environment (running engine emit harmful pollutants such as Hydrocarbons, Carbon Monoxide, Nitrogen Oxides, as well as Particulate Matter) 2) Create health issue for other road users and general public in the vicinity (prolong inhaling of pollutants stated above may have adverse health effect over an extended period of time) 3) Depleting natural resources (continuous burning of fuel) So please do our part, switch off the engine when waiting, to protect the environment and people around us.
  19. A woman in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) who was seriously injured in a car crash in 1991 has finally woken up from a 27-year-long coma. Munira Abdulla, then 32, had just picked up her 4-year-old son Omar from school when the car they were in collided with a school bus, reported local daily the National on Monday (Apr 22). While Omar was unharmed, Ms Abdulla, who had tried to protect her son from the impact, was left unconscious with a serious brain injury. Last year, Ms Abdulla, now 60, regained consciousness in a hospital room in Germany. “I never gave up on her because I always had a feeling that one day she will wake up,” said her 32-year-old son Omar Webair in an interview with the National. Ms Abdulla, who was taken to a local hospital after the accident, was later transferred to one in London where doctors diagnosed her to be in a minimally conscious state. She was then returned to the UAE where she was transferred several times due to insurance constraints. In 2017, Ms Abdulla was finally taken to a German hospital after the Crown Prince Court heard the family's story and gave them a grant. There, Ms Abdulla underwent surgery to treat her weakened limb muscles as well as physical therapy. Last June, Ms Abdulla was seen stirring in her bed when an argument broke out in her hospital room. “She was making strange sounds and I kept calling the doctors to examine her,” Mr Webair told the National. “They said everything was normal. “Then, three days later, I woke up to the sound of someone calling my name. “It was her. She was calling my name. I was flying with joy. For years I have dreamt of this moment, and my name was the first word she said.” Ms Abdulla is now receiving treatment in Abu Dhabi, where she is able to communicate “in a very reasonable manner”, said the hospital. “I shared her story to tell people not to lose hope on their loved ones,” Mr Webair said. “Don’t consider them dead when they are in such a state. “All those years, the doctors told me she was a hopeless case and that there was no point of the treatment I was seeking for her, but whenever in doubt I put myself in her place and did whatever I could to improve her condition.” Read more at https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/world/uae-woman-wakes-up-from-27-year-coma-after-car-crash-report-11472950 Miracle story to kick start this morning. In Singapore, this may not even be remotely possible no thanks to expensive healthcare bills. How comprehensive or rather how limited is our life insurance for coma patients? How many of us can afford to keep our loved ones alive for so long, with or without hopes of them even waking up? Then there are other deciding factors... What are the moral implications to deciding when to pull the plug for a coma patient whom is showing minimal signs of consciousness, on life support etc? Who is going to decide quality of life vs quantity of life? When is the right time to pull the plug? Is there ever a right time? Do insurance companies put pressure on hospitals or even doctors? This is a miracle case. It has given hope to families out there to keep the faith and not give up on their loved ones. But food for thought, how many of us would have been able to do the same? At 60 years old, she still has many good years to catch up on lost time with her family.
  20. Salad lovers, take note... So far SG no advisory but just becareful. If kiasu n kiasi, avoid romaine lettuce for time being. This includes mixed salad cuz got romaine inside. Canada has also issued advisory to abstain from it according to CNA.. https://www.straitstimes.com/world/united-states/us-issues-health-alert-on-romaine-lettuce https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/health/abstain-from-romaine-us-canada-warn-on-e-coli-in-lettuce-10952288 WASHINGTON (AFP) - US health officials warned consumers on Tuesday (Nov 20) not to eat any romaine lettuce and to throw away any they might have in their homes, citing an outbreak of E. coli poisoning. The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued the warning against all romaine lettuce just two days before the Thanksgiving holiday, when American families gather and feast together. "Consumers who have any type of romaine lettuce in their home should not eat it and should throw it away, even if some of it was eaten and no one has gotten sick," the CDC said, after 32 people were reported sick from E. coli poisoning in 11 states, with 13 of them hospitalised. One of those had suffered kidney failure. Health officials in Canada said they had also identified 18 people stricken with the same strain of food poisoning in two provinces, Ontario and Quebec. "This advice includes all types or uses of romaine lettuce, such as whole heads of romaine, hearts of romaine, and bags and boxes of pre-cut lettuce and salad mixes that contain romaine, including baby romaine, spring mix, and Caesar salad," the CDC said, noting that it had not been able to pinpoint precisely where the suspect leaves had originated. "If you do not know if the lettuce is romaine or whether a salad mix contains romaine, do not eat it and throw it away," the CDC said. It advised anyone who had stored romaine lettuce in their refrigerator to wash down the shelves where the leaves had been kept. No deaths have so far been reported.
  21. How many of you enjoy practicing self-defense? For fun I mean. When I say self-defense, I am not referring to any particular school of martial arts. Just simple techniques meant for real life self-defense situations. Like Krav Maga, except I don't do Krav Maga. I am just asking because I used to hang out with a couple of friends at Bishan Park once a week for self-defense training. Purely for fun. Nothing serious. I prefer that sort of atmosphere compared to the sort of strict training you have to adhere to in a proper school. Plus Bishan Park is free. No membership fees needed. But then we slowly drifted apart and the Friday Night Group was soon disbanded. Kinda sad, really.
