  1. 8 Ridiculous Myths About Eating Meat Kris Gunnars, Authority Nutrition Flickr/snekse There is a lot of nonsense in nutrition. One of the worst examples is the constant propaganda against meat consumption. Here are 8 ridiculous myths about meat consumption and health. 1. Meat Rots in Your Colon Some people claim that meat doesn’t get digested properly and “rots” in your colon. This is absolute nonsense, probably invented by dishonest vegans in order to scare people away from eating meat. What happens when we eat meat, is that it gets broken down by stomach acid and digestive enzymes. In the small intestine, the proteins are broken down into amino acids and the fats are broken down into fatty acids. After that, they get absorbed over the digestive wall and into the bloodstream. There’s nothing left to “rot” in your colon. If you want to know what really “rots” in your colon, it’s indigestible plant matter (fiber)… from vegetables, fruits, grains and legumes. The human digestive system doesn’t have the enzymes necessary to break downfiber, which is why it travels all the way to the colon. There, it gets fermented (rots) by the friendly bacteria in the intestine, which turn it into nutrients and beneficial compounds like the short-chain fatty acid butyrate (1). This is what keeps the friendly bacteria alive and many studies are showing that feeding these bacteria properly is incredibly important for optimal health (2, 3). So, meat doesn’t rot in the colon. Plants do… and this is actually a good thing. Bottom Line: The nutrients in meat are broken down and absorbed way before they reach the colon. However, fiber from plants does ferment (“rot”) in the colon, which is actually a good thing as it feeds the friendly bacteria. 2. Meat Is High in Harmful Saturated Fat and Cholesterol One of the main arguments against meat, is that it tends to be high in both saturated fat and cholesterol. But this really isn’t a cause for concern, because new science has shown both of them to be harmless. Despite being seen as something to be feared, cholesterol is actually a vital molecule in the body. It is found in every cell membrane and used to make hormones. The liver produces large amounts of it to make sure we always have enough. When we get a lot of cholesterol from the diet, the liver just produces less of it instead, so the total amount doesn’t change much (4, 5). In fact, in about 70% of people, cholesterol in the diet has negligible effects on cholesterol in the blood (6). In the other 30% (termed hyper-responders), there is a mild elevation in LDL cholesterol, but HDL (which is protective) also goes up (7, 8). The same is true with saturated fat, it also raises HDL (the “good”) cholesterol (9,10). But even when saturated fat and/or cholesterol cause mild increases in LDL, this is not a problem because they change the LDL particles from small, dense LDL (very bad) to Large LDL, which is protective (11, 12). Studies show that people who have mostly large LDL particles have a much lower risk of heart disease (13, 14). Therefore, it is not surprising to see that in population studies that include hundreds of thousands of people, saturated fat and cholesterol are not associated with an increased risk of heart disease (15, 16). In fact, some studies show that saturated fat is linked to a reduced risk of stroke, another very common cause of death and disability (17). When they put this to the test in actual human experiments, making people cut saturated fat and replacing it with “heart healthy” vegetable oils (which happen to lower cholesterol), it actually increases the risk of death (18). Bottom Line: It is true that meat tends to be high in saturated fat and cholesterol, but this is not a cause for concern because they do not have adverse effects on blood cholesterol or increase the risk of heart disease. 3. Meat Causes Heart Disease and Type 2 Diabetes Strangely enough, meat is often blamed for Western diseases like heart disease and type 2 Diabetes. Heart disease didn’t become a problem until the early 20th century and type 2 diabetes only a few decades ago. These diseases are new… but meat is an old food. Humans and pre-humans have been eating meat for millions of years (19). Blaming an old food for new health problems makes absolutely no sense. Fortunately, we do have two very large, very thorough studies that can put our minds at ease. In a massive study published in the year 2010, researchers pooled data from 20 studies that included a total of 1,218,380 individuals. They found no link between consumption of unprocessed red meat and heart disease or diabetes (20). Another major study from Europe that included 448,568 individuals found no link between unprocessed red meat and these diseases (21). However, both of these studies found a strong increase in risk for people who ateprocessed meat. For this reason, it is very important to make a distinction between the different types of meat. Many studies apparently showing that “red meat” is harmful didn’t adequately make the distinction between processed and unprocessed meat. Processed foods in general are pretty awful… this isn’t just true of meat. Bottom Line: Many massive studies have examined the relationship between meat consumption, heart disease and diabetes. They found a strong link for processed meat, but no effect for unprocessed red meat. 4. Red Meat Causes Cancer One common belief is that meat, especially red meat, causes cancer. This is where things get a bit more complicated. It is true that processed meat is associated with an increased risk of cancer, especially colon cancer (22). But when it comes to unprocessed red meat, things aren’t as clear. Although several studies suggest that even unprocessed red meat can raise the risk of cancer, review studies that pool the data from many studies at a time show a different picture. Two review studies, one that looked at data from 35 studies and the other from 25 studies, found that the effect for unprocessed red meat was very weak for men and nonexistent for women (23, 24). However… it does appear that the way meat is cooked can have a major effect on its health effects. Several studies show that when meat is overcooked, it can form compounds likeHeterocyclic Amines and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, which have been shown to cause cancer in test animals (25). There are several ways to prevent this from happening… such as choosing gentler cooking methods and always cutting away burned or charred pieces. So the answer is not to avoid red meat, but to make sure not to burn it. Keep in mind that overheating can cause harmful compounds to form in many other foods. This is NOT exclusive to meat (26). Bottom Line: The link between unprocessed red meat and cancer is very weak in men and nonexistent in women. This may depend on the way meat is cooked, because overheating can form carcinogens. 5. Humans Are Naturally Herbivores and Not “Designed” For Meat Consumption Some vegans claim that humans aren’t “designed” to eat meat. They say that humans are naturally herbivores like our primate ancestors. However… this is completely false. Humans and pre-humans have been eating meat for a very long time and our bodies are well adapted to meat consumption (27, 28). Our digestive systems really don’t resemble those of herbivores at all. We have short colons, long small intestines and lots of hydrochloric acid in the stomach to help break down animal protein (29). The length of different parts of our digestive system is somewhere in between the lengths typical for both carnivores and herbivores, indicating that humans are “designed” to be omnivores (30). It is also believed that our consumption of animal foods helped drive the evolution of our large brains, which set us apart from any other animal on earth (31). Humans function best eating both animals and plants. Period. Bottom Line: Humans are well equipped to make full use of the nutrients found in meat. Our digestive system reflects a genetic adaptation to an omnivorous diet, with animal foods as a major source of calories. 6. Meat is Bad For Your Bones Many people seem to believe that protein is bad for the bones and can lead to osteoporosis. The theory goes like this… we eat protein, which increases the acid load of the body, then the body moves calcium from the bones and into the bloodstream to neutralize the acid. There are in fact some short-term studies to support this. Increasing protein does lead to increased calcium loss from the body (32). However, this short term effect does not appear to persist because the long-term studies show that protein actually has beneficial effects on bone health (33). There is overwhelming evidence that a high protein diet is linked to improved bone density and a lower risk of osteoporosis and fractures in old age (34, 35, 36). This is a great example of where blindly following the conventional wisdom in nutrition will lead to the exact opposite result. 7. Meat is Unnecessary It is often claimed that meat is unnecessary for health. This is actually kind of true… most of the nutrients in it can be found in other animal foods. But just because we can survive without it, it doesn’t mean that we should… quality meat hasmany nutrients that are good for us. This includes quality protein, vitamin B12, creatine, carnosine and various important fat-soluble vitamins, which vegans and vegetarians are often lacking in. Whole foods like meat contain way more than just the standard vitamins and minerals that we’re all familiar with it. There are literally thousands of trace nutrients in there… some of which science has yet to identify. The fact is, humans evolved eating meat and evolution designed our bodies with these nutrients in mind. They are an essential part of the immensely complex biological puzzle. Can we live without meat? Sure… but we won’t reach optimal health, making use of all the beneficial nutrients that nature has provided us with. Although we can survive without meat, the same could be said of most other food groups… including vegetables, fruits, legumes, fish, eggs, etc. We just eat more of something else instead. Quality meat is pretty close to being the perfect food for humans. It contains most of the nutrients we need. There is even a study in the literature where two guys ate nothing but meat and organs for a year and remained in excellent health (37). Of course, not all meat is the same. The best meat comes from animals raised on pasture, fed the types of foods they would eat in nature. Unprocessed meat from properly raised, properly fed animals (like grass-fed beef) has a much better nutrient profile (38, 39). 8. Meat Makes You Fat Meat is often believed to be fattening. This seems to make sense on the surface because most meat is pretty high in fat and calories. However, meat also happens to be one of the best sources of highly bioavailable protein. Protein is the most weight loss friendly macronutrient, by far. Studies show that a high protein diet can boost metabolism by up to 80 to 100 calories per day (40, 41). There are also studies showing that if you increase your protein intake, you automatically start eating less of other foods instead (42). Several studies have found that by increasing the amount of protein in the diet, people automatically cut calorie intake by several hundred calories per day, putting weight loss on “autopilot” (43). Eating more protein also tends to favour increased muscle mass. Muscle is metabolically active and burns a small amount of calories around the clock (44). Also, let’s not forget that low-carb and paleo diets, which tend to be high in meat, lead to significantly more weight loss than diets that are lower in meat (45, 46). If anything, the more you eat of high quality meat (and less of other foods instead), the easier it should be for you to lose weight. 9. Anything Else? 2. Ridiculous office rules revealed LAURA FRANSEN HUMAN RESOURCES Sep 18, 2017 Source: http://www.asiaone.com/business/ridiculous-office-rules-revealed Does your company have any silly or unnecessary rules in place? While management will probably say no - after all, all rules are implemented for a reason - employees may feel differently. In a recent workplace study, 36.8 per cent of respondents said their workplace has "ridiculous" rules. The survey by UK job site CV-Library asked 1,000 UK workers whether their employer had any silly or unnecessary rules in place. If the fact that over a third of employees think their company has stupid rules doesn't motivate you to review your policies, perhaps this will: 22.5 per cent said that workplaces with ridiculous rules can't be trusted. When it comes to the ridiculous rules in question, according to the survey results they broadly fall into five categories: Bathroom breaks: Respondents reported they either had a strict time frame in which to go to the toilet (3 minutes), had to ask before using the toilet facilities, or were even searched before going to the toilet. Dress code: Some respondents reported they had to wear particular coloured clothes to match the business, and women weren't allowed to wear trousers. One individual even said that they were sent home for not dressing down. Talking: Some employees stated that they weren't allowed to talk out loud outside of the staff room, while others said that they weren't allowed to say "hello" to a customer, only "good morning", or "good afternoon". Time keeping: One company deducts 15 minutes worth of pay if an employee is 2 minutes late. Another won't allow staff to travel further than 20 metres away from the building during lunch in case they're back late. Drinks: Some workplaces won't allow their staff to drink water and another will not let workers carry drinks up and down the stairs. One company won't let employees have drinks on their desk in case they get spilt. Commenting on the results, Lee Biggins, founder and managing director of CV-Library, said: "Every workplace needs rules: otherwise you'd simply never get things done! That said it's clear that many of the rules highlighted in our research are just ridiculous." He added: "Employees want to feel trusted and while one workplace can differ massively to another, you have to treat your staff like adults - especially when it comes to being allowed to drink water and going to the toilet!" A final finding from the survey provides another reason for ensuring any office rule makes sense to staff. Over half of respondents (57.2 per cent) said that if they feel a rule is silly, they'll simply disobey it. My company also quite kecoh one. Quite stringent on dress code and such.
  3. What are the odds of encountering one or two oddball, batty teachers (even principals) during one's ten to sixteen years typically spent pursuing a formal education in Singapore schools? Well, obviously not so improbable. Read: the nasty, weird shit or advice spewing out of the mouths of some of these folks who were supposed to enlighten the eager bright young minds of tomorrow aka you the student. Oh yes, the horrors, the horrors indeed. More than a handful over at Reddit Singapore "affectionately" reminisced about the ridiculous (perhaps bordering on crazy), at times unintentionally entertaining and possibly thoughtless remarks their innocent(?) ears had to endure once upon a time in the classroom: By chongccino: "In secondary school, I got caught for folding back my skirt during an open house event. Normally I wouldn't do such a thing and I tried to explain that it was because the hook fell out. But the discipline mistress cut me off really rudely, told me I was setting a bad example for the juniors (another one who I never spoke to in my entire life was caught alongside me for folding her skirt) and exclaimed: “do you want the public to think our girls are cheap sluts?” Back then I was afraid of any further repercussions but in retrospect I should have complained and not let that slide because that was plain insulting and rude. What a bitch." By uniscent: "Last year one teacher in my school was helping out a group of girls with their geography project (during a camp) and requested they enter into a room to complete things; when the girls declined he laughed and said : “ Why are you so scared? It's not like I’m gonna rape all 3 of you at once.” "
  4. I have been monitoring the used car price since 2013 for a particular model. Based on all same specification (OMV avg to be about 35k) In 2014 October, I saw a 2008 Aug model going for $59,800 Just when I intend to buy the car when it was April 2015 (because I wanted to drive my car till 10 years), the same model 2008 Aug model was going for $68,800. I had to settle for a older model as I felt the asking price was too high. My yearly depreciation calculated to be 11k which is consider a good deal now. Now July 2015, same model Nov 2008 registered going for $69,800. All 3 time zone based on Cat B COE of 70k to 75k. Is it because of the new CEVs regulation that make used cars to be more "valuable"? For people who in need a car, like my father, might not even able to afford to buy a basic proper car now. FYI, my father bought a used 2.0 Korean car in 2013 Nov, paid 40% deposit and monthly of $474.00 instalment for 29 months. I find that the car price in used car market is rubbish. I know, take it or leave it. No cheap cars at all in the next 3 years at least.
  5. saw this article a few days ago but no time to post until today to sum up the case, girl was fought off her drunk rapist. during the struggle, she broke his erected penis before fleeing. she was charged for causing intentional injury to the rapist because rapist was bleeding badly (when she broke his penis) and she didnt call for help or police in time to save the rapist. how ridiculous is this charge?! http://mp.weixin.qq.com/s?__biz=MjM5MDAxMTgyMA%3D%3D&mid=200664719&idx=1&sn=720a38f5fa80beef9f077487bda8ffce&scene=4#rd

  8. This is crazy..... Read this article on 5th Dec today newsapaer TP and Insurance company is going to impose more pricey, difficult or revoke insurance (cannot own a car anymore) for ex-drink driving Offender.. I just feel that its unfair... They are being punish by the law already yet the People is still driving them to their grave again.(Some ppl need car for living) I thought government always say give the ex-convict a 2nd chance like the yellow ribbon project.. but say A doing B... If a Cow dun drink water, how u push it head. The cow also wont drink.. Now TP giving back the offender a chance to get the license back but yet deter them to have a car.Might well dun give back the license anymore after being convited for drink-driving offence... Its just like giving you a fishing rod and ask you to fish at the soccerfield for fish. Ridiculous..... 9. Hi guys/gals, usually I'm a reader on this forum and I don't really post much other than replys....On seeing this post in STOMP, it reallly madden me about drink driving, and worst still there is a baby in the car....I just wanna do a part to spread this piece of news so that justice is done on this type of irresponsible drink driver....damn, really pissed me off... Wanna drive fast car, do it on the track and stay sober....what this guy has done is absolutely unforgiving!!! http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg...er_hit_car.html
  10. Following 3 posts are mine, started in another forum, but relevant here too. Ridiculous (?reckless?) driver ask for special privileges in Driver's Improvement Point System (DIPs). Already he is fortunate that the TP will reduce his demerit points to zero in lieu of a clean driving record for 12 months, and suspension ONLY if he receives not less than 24 points in 24 months (non-probationary drivers). E.g. If Mr Chan Ban Choon gets 18 pts (e.g. Exceeding speed limit for road/ vehicle by more than 50 km/h up to 60km/h) on 01June2010, but has a clean driving record up till 01June2011, Mr Chan would be free to commit another 18point traffic violation on 02June2011 (sum total of 36points in 1yr and 1day) without breaking the suspension threshold of 24 demerit points in 24 months. Yet this is still not lenient enough for Mr Chan Ban Choon who thinks that 3 months is enough for him to "reflect on the traffic offence committed". May I kindly suggest that specially for Mr Chan Ban Choon, the TP should IMPOSE a suspension threshold of 3 demerit points every 3 months, and the moment Mr Chan hits 3 demerit points, Mr Chan's license is IMMEDIATELY suspended/ revoked (a special 3 monthly purging of demerit points not withstanding). (BTW, there are no demerit point offences attracting lesser than 3 demerit points) If Mr Chan is unable to operate his motor vehicle on roads safely and without the committal of traffic offences totaling 24 points in 24 months, despite the generous offer of a pristine record for 12 months of safe driving, than Mr Chan had better considering either public transport or the use of a bicycle as part of his work commute. Info source: Information - Driver's Improvement Point System (DIPs) [singapore Police Force].
  11. I am wondering how a distributor sell a item CR300HD that is listed by manufacturer for 295000KRW(SGD330 equivalent) as SGD599 here in Singapore? Are you blatantly ripping us off? Given you as the "distributor" Normally I would expect the price difference to be minimal from what they are recommended/selling!

  13. Just entertaining a couple friend from Germany transit via Singapore. Bring them for some local food and chit chatting. They are in their mid 50's and a son age age 16 and daughter 18. Some conversation and pop up this topic.......... they think their children are dating. Whenever their daughter went out, for dating or with friends, they wouldn't know, they will just secretly put in some condoms in their daughter's handbag. I was really quite shocked when they said this and ask them why? Their answer is, she had grown up, practice safe sex............... WTF I was thinking, you allowed and even encouraged your daughter to have safe sex even though she is not married??? Is this a good practice?? I doubt no parents in Singapore will do this!!!!!!!!

  16. I was sending my friend home from work last evening, almost 8 PM already. Had just turned in on the road towards Temasek Poly after coming down the flyover from Airport Road. The road was a 3 lane, and I was on the innermost left lane which could either turn left or go straight after the traffic light junction at the Caltex Station. I was going straight. Just going pass the traffic light and there comes this Altis on my RIGHT who actually tried to turn LEFT!! A quick swerve and a step of the pedal averted a potential impact right on my driver door, which was following quickly with a burst of expletives. Hope that there are less of such ridiculous drivers around.
  17. Wan to sian char bo from Facebook, and involve NIE and all, wat a loser Basically, SELF-PWNED! http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/si...t.jsp?id=63441 Teacher-to-be and bf order drinks at bar, leaves and gives us the bill! Is this what our future educators are going to be, wonders a STOMPer, who was so furious that this happened that he lodged a police report. The STOMPer had attached the reports to his email to STOMP about the incident, which allegedly took place on Feb 28 this year, where he met up with a friend he made via Facebook, and was made to pick up the tab after his 'friend' disappeared. He said, in his police report: "I was at the Long Bar on Feb 28 and had a drink with Y, together with four of her friends whom I have not met before. "There were three males and two females." According to the STOMPer, there already were several drinks on the table which his friend's party ordered before his arrival. The bill, he said, came up to $213.05. He added that he had no idea who ordered the drinks, and said the group was there chatting. "After 20 minutes two of the girls left. They claimed they wanted to go to the toilet. After five minutes I went outside the pub to answer a call. "When I returned I only saw a guy, who I believe is Y's boyfriend. The other two males had gone to grab some food. After a while, the guy left and claimed that he had a call. "As such, I messaged Y asking where she was and she said she was at East Shore Hospital as her friend was unwell. "I waited for about half an hour but no one came back. I then met up with the management to settle the payment. Y claims that one of her male friends is a regular customer of the pub but when I checked with the staff, they said they had no idea who these are. "I tried to call Y several times but to no avail." The STOMPer told STOMP he had contacted the NIE about this issue, and added: "This the future of our future educators? We have already informed NIE and told them we will be exposing Y in the media if it's our last resort. "I appreciate the fact that they have contacted her to advise her to settle this matter ASAP, but I'm sure there's more they can do. Afterall, this concerns the reputation of NIE and our future educators, no less."

  21. I check with Stamford today, the best best price they give me for 215/40/17 is $270!!! Initially i was expecting the price to be less than AD07 ($225) becos i was considering cheaper alternatives to the AD's... the salesperson was like "rt615 flaghsip model wat". so what? the rt's only pulls 0.06 longitudinal G's more than the AD's.
  22. I kanna pebble struck on my windscreen last Friday along CTE. This time it cracked the windscreen and the crackline started to get longer to about 30cm. Reported to my car insurance AXA and they call all supply source but could not find this part. So they called up CA to check for part availability. To my sheer horror, CA does not have Superb windscreen part!!! Not sure what type of service support they cater. How can this be possible? Will check again tomorrow.
