Built in the 1980s, Bishan (or Bishan New Town) may not be one of the earliest housing estates in Singapore, but it was the first whose HDB architecture saw a departure from the more brutalist designs of the past and featured more variation in height and design. Residents are primarily served by Junction 8, which opened in 1993. Now more than 30 years old, it remains the sole mall in the Bishan East area. Driving there? Here’s our quick review of the carpark. Manoeuvrability: Tight or not? It’s worth pointing out that this is a very old carpark (in today’s context), and it certainly shows. Lighting isn’t great, the overall space is quite tight (it was designed and built in a time of much smaller cars), and so manoeuvrability is generally not that great. And because there is two-way traffic, hold ups are to be expected, especially during peak hours. Also, entering the down ramp to B3 requires caution. It’s a full 180-degree turn, and into oncoming traffic (the lanes are not divided by any barrier of sorts). Take it slow, watch out for traffic. 4/10 Ease of navigation: Confusing or not? It’s not a particularly confusing carpark, with clear signages to point you in the right direction. It also helps that it’s not particularly big and there’s one main escalator lobby, so there’s no real risk of getting lost. 8/10 Lot availability: Crowded or not? There are 305 lots over two basement levels, so it’s not a particularly big carpark. And during peak hours, it will understandably get crowded. Thankfully, there’s a decent alternative nearby: atop the Bishan Bus Interchange. There are 561 lots there, though not all are covered, and it definitely gets packed during lunch hours. 5/10 Cost: Expensive of not? From midnight to 6:00pm on weekdays, its $1.35 for the first hour, then $0.45 for every additional 15 minutes. That certainly racks up. And it’s similar on weekends - $2.65 for the first 2 hours, and $0.45 for every additional 15 minutes. Thankfully, there’s per entry parking of $2.65 after 6:00pm. For a heartland mall, it’s on the pricey side. 5/10 EV Chargers: Can charge or not? Nope. 0/10 Motorcycle lots: Bike-friendly or not? There are only a handful of motorcycle lots available on B1. $1.30/entry, which is fairly typical for most shopping malls. Park at the next-door MSCP. 2/10 Accessibility: Can find or not? It’s not actually hard to find, but actually getting to the carpark can be a slow-going. Access to the carpark is via two roads both named Bishan Pl, and both are single lane and with a traffic-light controlled pedestrian crossing, so traffic build up is quite common. 6/10 Overall design: Good or not? The main issue with Junction 8 is just that it is old – the design is from a different era where cars were smaller, so in today’s context it does feel like quite a cramp carpark. Ingress and egress also can be challenging given the layout of the road, but there’s no real possibility of expanding those roads, either. There’s nothing inherently wrong with its design though – relatively clearly laid out and not too hard to navigate. Expectedly, it’s probably not that simple or easy to ‘upgrade’ the carpark. 6/10.

What in the world is happening to our vehicles? In this video posted by Beh Chia Lor, an unknown vehicle (later identified as a motorcycle) catches fire and was quickly engulfed in flames and smoke. As the vehicle kept burning, a taxi driver attempts to exit the open-air carpark after dropping off a passenger prior to the recording of the video. The taxi slowly crept closer to the burning area as the witness zooms in on the huge fire on his/her device. The burning vehicle suddenly explodes with a fiery 'BOOM', scaring everyone in the vicinity. The taxi driver immediately stops in his tracks. A netizen was kind enough to provide a transcript of what was being said in the background during the explosion: Translation: *Explode* Wooh oh my god, I tell you hor, don't want to go closer then like that lor. (Author's Note: I think this guy is trying to say "This is why we don't go closer.") Mimicking an atomic explosion, the fiery flames spread to another car that was parked beside the burning motorcycle. Thick black smoke starts to fill the air, and the video promptly ends. According to the witness, the SCDF arrived minutes later to attend to the fire. Netizens' reactions While there is no information currently on what caused the fire, netizens were quick to jump to the gun and come up with their own theories. Very unlikely, but it is a plausible explanation. I don't even know what this guy is on but he seems pretty sure of his theory. Again, another plausible explanation. Finally, one netizen came forth with the most likely scenario. A Nissan qashqai was caught on video going out of control last friday in Bishan. As seen in the low-resolution video, the white SUV crashed through the fence and onto the wrong direction of Bishan Road while doing a flip and more. Thankfully, the lost of control of the car did not cost any lives. According to SG Road Vigilante, The 80-year-old driver and his 74-year-old female passenger were conscious when they were taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Obviously, there is going to be some negativity once the driver's age has been revealed... Thankfully there are some nice people out there that are more understanding...

Just opened not long ago. 24hrs. Right below condominium Clover By The Park. One thing = No car park nearby. Residential area carpark confirm full by evening. It's not like AMK Park or West Coast or East Coast where there's dedicated parking.

It is only me who felt this ? The new bridge across from Toa Payoh to Bishan looks kind of dangerous without the supporting column. Every morning when I drove under it, I will quietly murmured "那摩阿弥陀佛 “。

Today I was exiting from the roof top carpark when I noticed the above scenario. The car was blocking the exit and any SUV or MPV would probably have problems coming out as the space to manoeuvre is limited. The purpose of this thread is not to target at the brand or make but a question which apply to Auto car relying heavily on electronics. As most and more cars relied heavily on it, my understanding that it is still possible to disengage foot/hand brake then put gear to neutral and push the vehicle. Or maybe for this case, it is not advisable as if I am in the same situation, I would push it aside. Appreciate any clarifications on whether one should attempt to push stalled car aside if it is obstructing others. TIA.- 45 replies

The man, Qiu Fa Guang, 39, had fallen from a height of more than 20 storeys at about 2.30pm yesterday at Blk 179, Bishan Street 13. It was speculated that Qiu had landed on a series of pavement railings on the ground floor, resulting in his head, left arm and right foot being severed from his body. Indonesian maid Aminah, 25, was doing the chores when she heard a loud "bang". She looked outside the window thinking someone might be shooting crows, then she saw a headless body on the ground below. According to her, the man's body was facing up. He was shirtless and wearing a pair of brown shorts and black slippers. Many passersby were shocked to see the horrific gory mess caused by the shattered body. A resident Mr Chen, 56, said that he has never seen such a gory scene with blood and broken limbs everywhere. He believes that he will never forget the scene and that he will have nightmares of it. He added, "I don't think I'll ever use this footpath again. Every time I walk here, I will recall this gory scene. I'll rather take a longer detour to get home." Meanwhile, the police are investigating the case as an unnatural death. Residents are also uneasy with the unusual deaths that took place at this HDB block. On 10 January this year, 55-year-old retiree Lu Fang Jin was killed when she was hit by the falling body of 48-year-old Huang Shu Luan, a resident who stayed on the 11th floor. Both women died in the unusual case, which happened also at Blk 179, Bishan Street 13.

Veteran opposition leader Mr Chiam See Tong will be abandoning his stronghold of Potong Pasir to lead a team to contest in Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC led by Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng. The stunning news was revealed today by Chairman of the Singapore People’s Party Mr Sin Kek Tong to the media and was published in Shin Min Daily. It was not revealed who else will be running together with Mr Chiam in Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC. Mr Chiam’s wife, retired nurse Ms Lina Loh will take over his place in Potong Pasir. Mr Chiam first won the single seat of Potong Pasir in 1984 when he defeated PAP’s Mah Bow Tan by winning 60.8 per cent of the valid votes. He were to keep his seat by winning the subsequent 5 elections and becoming the longest-serving opposition MP in Parliament. Mr Chiam just celebrate his 25th anniversary as MP for Potong Pasir and judging from the response he received from the residents attending the dinner, it is evident that he is still highly popular among them. Ms Lina Loh has been working the ground for the last few years and cuts a familiar figure in Potong Pasir. Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC has not witnessed any electoral contests since 1988 while Mr Chiam won his seat during the last election by 55 per cent of the votes. Mr Chiam has earlier indicated his desire to break the PAP’s stranglehold on the GRCs by winning the one. The closest the opposition has come to winning a GRC since the scheme was first introduced in 1988 was at Eunos GRC during the same year where the Workers’ Party trio of Francis Seow, Lee Siew Choh and Mohamad Yackob won 49.1 per cent of the votes. While Mr Wong may not be the most popular PAP leader in Singapore, Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC has been his stronghold for over 20 years and it may be difficult for Mr Chiam to dislodge him. News Source

White Ford Focus wagon vs white lorry. Happened at traffic light junction - Bishan Rd/Bishan St 22 towards Braddell Road, on Wednesday (4 Nov 2009) around 3.20pm. Slight drizzle and road was wet. Traffic light was red and lorry in front of me was stationary when I stopped behind him. The lorry started rolling back when lights turned green, and hit my front despite my desperate horning. Funny thing was that the joker then drove off without even stepping out. I chased him and managed to pull him over just after the traffic light - asked him if he was aware that he hit me (actually very obvious - bang was super loud). First thing he said was "what I hit you... you banged into me!" (or something like that). He was an elderly uncle. After a slight argument, he refused to exchange particulars. In the end I had to called 999 who advised me to leave the scene and report hit and run. But sigh... now very worried that this case may turn out to be another one of those insurance ding-dong saga. I realized my position is very weak if the uncle doesn't admit it, or worse, turn the whole thing around against me. All signs point towards me kissing him. My only comfort is that the police agree with me that if I was the one to hit him, I will not be so stupid to chase him and confront him. (On the hind sight, I should have let it go - the damaged to my front turned out to be quite minor). There were a few cars around me at that time, and one beside me even helped me to horn (unfortunately, he/she drove off after the crash). If you happen to be around to witness the accident, hope you can step forward to help me out. Even if you did not see the actual accident, but saw us further up the road (we were on the right lane), I will appreciate it if you can drop me a PM. Thanks. -

On the way home from Bishan today abt 11.30am, witness an accident between a Nissan Cedric taxi and VW Passat. All caught in my camera but there is a car in front so the impact was blocked. The VW was turning right and the taxi going straight. Immediately after impact, VW still can drive to the side of the road with its front totally gone.:z The stupid Altis driver in front stare n didnt move after green light, I need to horn him for him to move.
