  1. I am starting this thread to do my part in boosting the traffic / readership / participationship in MCF. I started the same topic during my time with AsiaOne Motoring Forum, and this used to be one of the hottest thread over there. All the old birds from A1M Forum (@fitvip, @presea, @hotnyh, @sabian, @7007, @ahyoo2002, etc.), let do our part to keep MCF active so that this forum would not face the same fate as A1M. For a start, let have something easy. All these 3 model were available in Singapore some 15 - 20 years ago. Happy guessing... #1 #2 #3

  7. Based on Polis stats. They classify major crimes as robbery, break-in, snatch theft, car theft and outrage of modesty. While this place may not have the highest for each category, it is the only area to have double digits in all 5 categories. No googling please
  8. Make your predictions and comeback later to see how they turn out:- Pls list the predictions below in the order of highest chances of happening as you see them. Before next GE, - COE prices will drop below 50k - Property prices will return to 2010 level - Minimum number of attacks on oppositions in MSM:- 5 - 6 prior months of breakdown-free of MRT train services - No passing away of a certain promiment political figure - Passing away of the same figure - More tweakings of FT/FW import policies to curb the in-flows - Adjustments of ministers' salaries (downward) - Good forecast of economy / GDP growth for next 6 months - Good records of economy / GDP relative performance for immediate past 6 months - Pay rise of civil servants - Others (please feel free to add)

  12. INGAPORE - The former part-time actor approached them about two months ago with a sob story about needing money desperately for his ailing mother. Having known the man for more than 20 years, celebrity couple Hong Hui Fang and Zheng Geping decided to help him and have lent him $5,000 in total so far Then they heard from friends that the former actor, who we shall call A, had been seen gambling in the casinos here and word soon got around in their circle of friends that A had also borrowed up to five-digit sums from veteran A-list stars such as Zoe Tay, Chen Guo Hua and Hong Kong actress Michelle Yim after telling them the same sob story. Hong and Zheng are now wondering if they will get their money back, especially since some of the stars who lent him money have not been able to reach him recently. The couple said that A, who has acted in many MediaCorp dramas in the past, had phoned them on separate occasions in the last two months to say that he needed cash urgently to pay his rent and to take care of his old ailing mother who had previously suffered a stroke. Zheng, 49, told The New Paper in Mandarin on Monday: "He called me up and told me how pitiful his life is. "He begged me to lend him some money so that he could pay his maid who is taking care of his mother. "I was worried about his mum, and I felt that he might be telling the truth, so I lent him the money." He added: "It's only when I heard from my friends that they had seen him gambling in casinos here that I realised he had taken the money to gamble. "I am very disappointed because I felt that he shouldn't have lied to us. Most importantly, he should ensure that his mum has a place to stay and is okay now." Hong, 53, said: "Every time he borrows money from actors, he would use a different mobile phone number, and once the call ends, the number would not be in use any more. No one can find him to get back the money." At least two stars said they heard that A had sold his flat to feed his gambling habit and to pay off his gambling debts. He is said to have rented a room which he shares with his mother. Some local artistes, including Zheng and Hong, are now trying to find a charity organisation to take care of A's mother. Zheng said: "My wife did some research and texted him a list of charity organisations that can take his mum in, but he did not respond. As outsiders, this is all we can do to help. "We are not even thinking of getting our money back right now. All we want is for his mother to have a roof over her head." Veteran actor Chen Guo Hua, 52, who had tried to contact A several times, but to no avail, told Shin Min Daily News: "He had borrowed money from me many times, but had not given back the money. "He called me once while leading a tour group in China and said he needed to borrow money urgently. "He wanted me to transfer the money to a bank account in Singapore. "That was when I guessed that he might have wanted me to help him repay money he had borrowed from loan sharks." Veteran actress Xiang Yun was also approached by A last month. The 51-year-old told TNP: "He pleaded with me and I could hear that he was in a dire state. I told him that if he wanted to borrow a huge sum of money, I was unable to (help). My ATM card was not with me at the time and I was busy having my car repaired, so I told him I couldn't help him. "He even told me that I am one of the few local celebs who had not lent him money yet." A, who used to be a tour guide, had also convinced some local artists to invest in his travel agency business about two years ago, telling them that they could receive profits after six months. They included Hong, who pumped in $50,000, and actor Nick Shen, who invested a five-digit sum. Shen, who is in his 30s, told TNP: "I had a good working relationship with him in the past, so when he approached me to invest, I thought it was fine. "When I didn't hear from him after six months, I followed up with him and he told me his business had met some challenges. Eventually, he paid me back the full sum in instalments." Hong also said that A has repaid the $50,000 she lent him. Business failed When Shin Min managed to track A down over the phone on Friday, he said he was working part-time in Batam and that he needed to borrow the money because his business had failed. He denied he had been gambling. After reports on him came out that day, he called Shin Min on Saturday and said that he had lost his job in Batam and had returned to Singapore. He said: "I am not on the run and I did not say that I wouldn't pay back the money." He said he would contact his creditors and answer to them. As of last Monday evening, Zheng and Hong said they had yet to hear from him. Stars who reportedly lent money to A Chen Guo Hua Thousands of dollars Hong Kong actor Xia Yu Over $10,000 Hong Kong actress Michelle Yim $40,000 Zoe Tay $10,000 Zhang Jing Hua $30,000 Jing Yin Ji Over $10,000 Hong Hui Fang and Zheng Geping $5,000
  13. Extracted from http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=102...pe=1&ref=nf Quoted from one of his ex-colleagues: "it was the marketing department of the admin and research unit of NTUC umbrella union. he was there in '05 as deputy director or something, a rising star so to speak, "young and talented, up and coming"... yada yada yada. Let me just cut to the chase: there were no less than 2 girls who worked there the same time i did who told me of their sexual harassment experience with this guy. and as far as i know it went unreported, undisclosed.. and there were many others who also knew of it. but it seems not enough people stood up for themselves or for the others to make it known."

  15. CPF, Medisave minimum sum to be increased Published on May 30, 2012 CPF members, who turn 55 between July 1 and June 30 next year will have to set aside a minimum sum of $139,000, up from $131,000 last year. -- ST PHOTO: CAROLINE CHIA CPF members, who turn 55 between July 1 and June 30 next year will have to set aside a minimum sum of $139,000, up from $131,000 last year. The amount was adjusted over the years to account for inflation, longer life expectancies and Singaporeans' rising expectations of their quality of life post-retirement. From July 1, the Medisave minimum sum (MMS) will also be raised to $38,500 from $36,000, a 7 per cent increase. Members will be able to withdraw their Medisave savings in excess of the amount at, or after, the age of 55. The maximum balance a member may have in his Medisave Account, known as the Medisave contribution ceiling (MCC), is set at $5,000 above the minimum sum, which means it would be increased correspondingly to $43,500, from $41,000 previously.
  16. Government releases 5 future population scenarios Published on Apr 24, 2012 The National Population and Talent Division (NPTD) on Tuesday released five future population scenarios that highlight Singapore's pressing challenges. -- ST PHOTO: SHAHRIYA YAHAYA By Phua Mei Pin The National Population and Talent Division (NPTD) on Tuesday released five future population scenarios that highlight Singapore's pressing challenges. The release of this paper is part of a public engagement campaign by the government on population issues, in the lead-up to a White Paper on population that will come out later this year. The paper can be seen at www.nptd.gov.sg/. One scenario projects that the total fertility rate stays at its current low of 1.2 births per woman, with no supplement to the population from immigration. In this scenario, Singapore's citizen population will start to shrink 13 years from now, and decrease by more than half a million by 2060. The other scenarios keep fertility at current levels, but with differing levels of immigration, ranging from 15,000 to 25,000 new citizens being brought in per year. In all scenarios, the number of working-age citizens declines, while the median age climbs. The scenarios show that an immigration inflow of between 20,000 and 25,000 new citizens a year is needed to keep the citizen population size stable

  19. Higher expenses derail SMRT Corp earnings Published on Oct 29, 2011 Revenue for the three months increased by $15.1 million or 6.1 per cent to $261.1 million, on the back of higher public transport ridership. -- ST PHOTO: NURIA LINGBy Christopher Tan Rail-and-rental group SMRT Corp posted a $13.9 million drop in operating profit to $42.1 million for the second quarter that ended on Sept 30, largely because of higher expenses. Revenue for the three months increased by $15.1 million or 6.1 per cent to $261.1 million, on the back of higher public transport ridership. Contributions also came from the newly-opened Circle Line, higher taxi rental revenue, increase in external fleet maintenance revenue and higher rental and advertising revenue, partially offset by lower average fares for MRT and Bus. Group revenue for the first half rose by 6.8 per cent to $514.2 million. Net profit after tax for the first six months fell by 18 per cent to $68.9 million. Chief executive Ms Saw Phaik Hwa said: 'Looking ahead, we expect an increase in fare revenue due to higher ridership on existing lines and increased ridership due to the opening of Circle Line Stages 4 and 5. 'However, profitability will be impacted by higher operating costs, particularly energy cost.' SMRT directors have declared an interim dividend of 1.75 cents per share.
  20. Most expensive prata in S'pore at Esplanade: $12 for 2 STOMPer Royal says he was charged $12 for two roti pratas with egg at the Esplanade's Makansutra. He feels this was just too much of a mark-up, even if it was during the F1. The STOMPer wrote: "Yesterday during the F1 race, I went to Makansutra at the Esplanade to have dinner. "I know that prices are inflated during the F1 and that's quite normal, but the Indian store selling roti prata was really ridiculous. "I went to the prata store and asked for two egg pratas. He told me then that they would cost $12. "I was like, are you kidding? I then asked if it was a set meal with additional items? "He said it was just the prata and curry and said one prata costs six bucks. I looked at him and told him I was not interested and cancelled my order. "I don't mind paying extra since its the F1 and understand that prices would be inflated, but come on -- six bucks for a piece of dough with an egg? "The guy just looked at me sheepishly and grinned. He probably thinks locals do not know the market rate of roti prata. "Are they trying to make enough to retire during the F1?"
