  1. I am looking at the Aviva My Retirement Plus. In the illustration when one pays 16K for 10 years then receive an inflation adjusted payout of 1K/mth until 85. What will it happen if the holder decides to stop paying the premium at 5th year when migrate to another country? Surrender with a big loss, or receive a pro-rated payout according to the premium paid and schedule, or what other exit strategy can the holder take? I wonder whether there are any easy and hassle-free retirement savings plan where the buyers can put in money as they wish and the interest increases with the time the $ stays in like the SSB then after retirement the payout also follows some automatic prearranged schedule, and most importantly, removing insurance agents' cut?
  2. So I bought a used 10 year old car. What happens next year if I go for inspection and inspection fails ? I suspect the cat in the exhaust was modified or deleted ... Can I buy a cat to install ?
  3. Ongoing argument about whether Singaporeans really own their HDB flats, or whether they're just renting them on a lease. One thing that tips the balance in favour of the latter argument is the fact that the HDB has the right to confiscate or repossess your flat if you do something unacceptable in the eyes of HDB, the Big Brother. http://www.asiaone.com/business/what-actually-happens-when-hdb-confiscates-your-flat?xtor=EREC-16-4[Emarsys_Newsletter]-20180102&extid=6934d0cfb7b252f1ae9f0dbddf5ff88ca8637e77
  4. If you're eagle eyed enough, you'll see disaster almost right from the start..
  5. Curious, and assuming no Guarantor. Will car be repo? Or will bank clawback from dead owner's assets? Thanks in advance
  6. My civic is due for the 30k km servicing very soon. What happens if i dont send it back to KM? Will i void warranty or something. I have been sending my car for the 1k, 10k and 20k servicing to KM. Seems to me that the servicing is very expensive. They charged me close to $300 for the 20k servicing, so I think it will be even more for the 30k one. Am I right to assume that that it will be cheaper if done elsewhere. What are the consequences if I do it elsewhere?
  7. Just curious if anyone knows what happens when a maid (domestic helper) can't pay their debt collector? Is it simply a matter of them leaving town and then escaping the debt, or does it catch up to them in their home country too? Anybody experience this before?
  8. if someone breaks into your house here in sgp with a knife, and u call 999 to ask for the same advice, what would it be? http://news.yahoo.com/okla-woman-shoots-ki...-091106413.html Okla. Woman Shoots, Kills Intruder: 911 Operators Say It's OK to Shoot A young Oklahoma mother shot and killed an intruder to protect her 3-month-old baby on New Year's Eve, less than a week after the baby's father died of cancer. Sarah McKinley says that a week earlier a man named Justin Martin dropped by on the day of her husband's funeral, claiming that he was a neighbor who wanted to say hello. The 18-year-old Oklahoma City area woman did not let him into her home that day. On New Year's Eve Martin returned with another man, Dustin Stewart, and this time was armed with a 12-inch hunting knife. The two soon began trying to break into McKinley's home. As one of the men was going from door to door outside her home trying to gain entry, McKinley called 911 and grabbed her 12-gauge shotgun. McKinley told ABC News Oklahoma City affiliate KOCO that she quickly got her 12 gauge, went into her bedroom and got a pistol, put the bottle in the baby's mouth and called 911. "I've got two guns in my hand -- is it okay to shoot him if he comes in this door?" the young mother asked the 911 dispatcher. "I'm here by myself with my infant baby, can I please get a dispatcher out here immediately?" The 911 dispatcher confirmed with McKinley that the doors to her home were locked as she asked again if it was okay to shoot the intruder if he were to come through her door. "I can't tell you that you can do that but you do what you have to do to protect your baby," the dispatcher told her. McKinley was on the phone with 911 for a total of 21 minutes. When Martin kicked in the door and came after her with the knife, the teen mom shot and killed the 24-year-old. Police are calling the shooting justified. "You're allowed to shoot an unauthorized person that is in your home. The law provides you the remedy, and sanctions the use of deadly force," Det. Dan Huff of the Blanchard police said. Stewart soon turned himself in to police. McKinley said that she was at home alone with her newborn that night because her husband just died of cancer on Christmas Day. "I wouldn't have done it, but it was my son," McKinley told ABC News Oklahoma City affiliate KOCO. "It's not an easy decision to make, but it was either going to be him or my son. And it wasn't going to be my son. There's nothing more dangerous than a woman with a child."
  9. Dear drivers, I have been seeing more and more videos appearing online shaming road bullies and inconsiderate road users. If one fine day you saw your face or car appearing online flashing across the major forums, who would you continue your life here? Imagine that your family, relatives and colleagues see your behavior fully exposed? By saying this, do you try to spot for car camera when you are enraged by the other parties behavior before you give him a piece of your mind?
  10. This comes just two days after a major glitch affected 127,000 passengers during rush hour on Thursday evening. An SMRT statement said as of 9am, northbound train service between Raffles Place to Jurong East is available. http://www.asiaone.com/News/AsiaOne%2BNews...217-316710.html One day after apology, breakdown again. When will they ever learn? So what is the CEO going to say again this time?

I booked a used vehicle(non-passenger) in early august @ 55K from a reputable dealer. vehicle age is under 3yrs. despite higher than normal interest rate, i agreed to the deal cause it's something that I need for business use. now after about 1month+ later, dealer called said unable to get loan at decent amount, only able to get 30k MAX. Do I have a case against them?? Since they can't secure a loan for me but during the neg time, they say No PROBLEM... they work with Hong Leong, DBS, UOB, many many banks... help needed.. thanks
  21. Barclays faces 50m euro Qatari fraud claim (LONDON) Claims from a senior member of the Qatari royal family over an alleged 50 million euro (S$106 million) fraud at Barclays could flare up again just as the UK bank seeks to raise funds from Qatar, a newspaper said. The Sunday Times said a billionaire sheikh, a member of Qatar's ruling Al Thani family, claims that gross negligence by Barclays allowed an employee of the sheikh to siphon off about four million euros a month from a personal account in Spain. The allegations relate to transactions that took place between December 2001 and February 2003, and the sheikh is expected to increase pressure to settle the claim as the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) prepares to buy a small stake in the bank, the paper said. Barclays declined to comment on the issue. -- Reuters
  22. Take out loans to pay for TV/hifi, borrow from one credit card to pay for another, taking cash rebate to settle a negative equity car loan, take out reno loans, take out holiday loans, Buying a home you cant afford, buy a car you cant afford to upkeep etc etc...so lesson learnt? The US pain will be translated to Singapore in a few months so brace yourself. From ST April 30, 2008 Americans unloading precious belongings to make ends meet NEW YORK - THE for-sale listings on the online hub Craigslist come with plaintive notices, like the one from the teenager in Georgia who said her mother lost her job and pleaded, 'Please buy anything you can to help out.' Or the seller in Milwaukee who wrote in one post of needing to pay bills - and put a diamond engagement ring up for bids to do it. Struggling with mounting debt and rising prices, faced with the toughest economic times since the early 1990s, Americans are selling prized possessions online and at flea markets at alarming rates. To meet higher gas, food and prescription drug bills, they are selling off grandmother's dishes and their own belongings. Some of the household purging has been extremely painful - families forced to part with heirlooms. 'This is not about downsizing. It's about needing gas money,' said Ms Nancy Baughman, founder of eBizAuctions, an online auction service she runs out of her garage in Raleigh, North Carolina. One former affluent customer is now unemployed and had to unload Hermes leather jackets and Versace jeans and silk shirts. At Craigslist, which has become a kind of online flea market for the world, the number of for-sale listings has soared 70 per cent since last July. In March, the number of listings more than doubled to almost 15 million from the year-ago period. Craigslist CEO Jeff Buckmaster acknowledged the increasing popularity of selling all sort of items on the Web, but said the rate of growth is 'moving above the usual trend line.' He said he was amazed at the desperate tone in some ads. In Daleville, Alabama, Ms Ellona Bateman-Lee has turned to eBay and flea markets to empty her three-bedroom mobile home of DVDs, VCRs, stereos and televisions. She said she needs the cash to help pay for soaring food and utility bills and mounting health care expenses since her husband, Bob, suffered an electric shock on the job as a dump truck driver in 2006 and is now disabled. Among her most painful sales: her grandmother's teakettle. She sold it for US$6 (S$8.20) on eBay. 'My grandmother raised me, so it hurt,' she said. 'We've had bouts here and there, but we always got by. This time it's different.' Economists say it is difficult to compare the selling trend with other tough times because the Internet, only in wide use since the mid-1990s, has made it much easier to unload goods than, say, at pawn shops. People selling belongings at bargain prices But clearly, cash-strapped people are selling their belongings at bargain prices, with a flood of listings for secondhand cars, clothing and furniture hitting the market in recent months, particularly since January. Earlier this decade, people tapped their inflated home equity and credit cards to fuel a buying binge. Now, slumping home values and a credit crisis have sapped sources of cash. Meanwhile, soaring gas and food prices haven't kept pace with meager wage growth. Gas prices have already hit US$4 per gallon - high by US standards - in some places, and that could become more widespread this summer. The weakening job market is another big worry. Ms Christine Hadley, a 53-year-old registered nurse from Reading, Pennsylvania, says she used to be 'a clotheshorse,' splurging on pricey Dooney & Bourke handbags. But her live-in boyfriend left last year, and she has had trouble finding a job. Piles of unpaid bills forced her to sell more than 80 items, including the handbags, which went for more than US$1,000 on a site called AuctionPal.com. Now, except for some artwork and threadbare furniture, her house is looking sparse. 'I need the money for essentials - to pay my bills and to eat,' Ms Hadley said. At AuctionPal.com, which helps novices sell things online, for-sale listings rose 66 per cent from February to March, much faster than the 25 per cent to 30 per cent average monthly pace since the company was formed in September, CEO Maureen Ellenberger said. Economic stress She said she was surprised to see that most of her clients desperately needed to sell items to raise cash. For LiveDeal.com, a classifieds and business directory site, for-sale listings for January through March rose 10 per cent from the previous year. 'We can definitely detect economic stress on the part of the consumer,' said Mr John Raven, the site's chief operating officer. On Craigslist, Mr Buckmaster said, three of the four fastest-growing for-sale categories are tied to gas - recreational vehicles like campers and trailers, cars and trucks, and boats. Mr Raven noted more and more listings for furniture, particularly in areas around Miami and Las Vegas and other regions hardest hit by the housing crisis. Ms Baughman, who runs eBizAuctions, said that over the past four months she's been working with mostly desperate sellers instead of mainly casual ones. Most are middle-class customers who can't pay their bills and now want to be paid up front for the items instead of waiting until they are sold, she said. The trend may be hurting secondhand stores too. Donations to the Salvation Army were down 20 per cent in the January-to-March period. Mr George Hood, the charity's national community relations and development secretary, said that was probably partly because people were selling their belongings instead. And secondhand buyers want better deals now as well, driving prices down. Secondhand merchandise online is going for 25 to 35 per cent below what it commanded a year ago, estimated Mr Brian Riley, senior analyst at research firm The TowerGroup. 'It won't hit the saturation point until the (economy) hits the bottom and right now, we don't know when that is,' he said. In Alabama, Ms Bateman-Lee said that she only received US$30 for her TV and US$45 for her DVD player at a local flea market. She doesn't have too much left to sell, but she's going back to 'sort through more things.' Her US$30 water bill is due this week. -- AP
