  1. Videos of traffic police checking child passengers’ heights stir road rules debate GVGT It’s normal to see police officers scanning Singapore’s roads at night for speeding motorists or drunk drivers. But to halt vehicles for checks on child passengers’ heights? Not so much. Videos showing traffic police officers stopping drivers in broad daylight to measure the heights of child passengers in their cars surfaced on Facebook yesterday. The unusual sight of officers holding measuring tapes against kids who appeared to be around six years old as the adults looked on had piqued the curiosity of many, with all three clips that were posted racking up over 200,000 views accumulatively. It’s unclear where the checks were taking place. Viewers who commented on the post, shared by Facebook user Huang Jiaxing, pointed out that the officers’ actions seemed to be connected to child safety rules on the road. Those below the height of 1.35m are required in Singapore to use the child seat or approved adjustable seat belts to lower the risk of accidental injury. Taxis, however, are exempted from this requirement as it is considered not “reasonable or practical” for parents to carry child seats wherever they go. But a taxi driver could be fined S$120 and given three demerit points if he or she fails to ensure that the children are in the rear seat. If convicted in court, taxi drivers could be fined up to S$1,000 or jailed for up to three months. These rules have been around at least since 2011 but are rarely seen being enforced by the traffic police. Coconuts Singapore has reached out to the police for more details on why the checks on child passengers are taking place only now. Meanwhile, netizens praised authorities for their “good move” on the apparent efforts to ensure child safety on the roads.

  3. New property cooling measure, restriction on exec condo size, higher LTV which mean buyer now need to fork out min 25% instead of 10% Huat ah!!!!! Lets see people still go showflat or not Source from strait times
  4. just checking you measure your 0-100 performance on the road. Was watching youtube and notice many used the speedometer (either video timed or hand timed), i recently realize that our speedometer can be faster by quite a bit as they factory always set it a bit higher (meaning it shows faster than it is)..so you time may look better. My car is almost 10km/hr difference at 100!!!!!! (verified with ODB sensor and GPS). For faster cars it maybe a fraction of a second difference, but for slower cars can make a 2 second difference (like mine slow Altis) I have tried GPS timing but its not very accurate as it can 'miss' the start. Now using ODBII sensor (android) and the times are very high..so maybe its the most accurate (ODB speed readings are different from what is shown on the speedometer. Now looking for program that can give acceleration curve. My car gear ratio means more zippy at low speed by really drag closer to 100. Anyone go another way of testing?

  6. Yesterday i over heard a group of ah lao's arguing over the boom in population. one comment caught my attention. allowing a boom in PR and WP holder is for economic reasons, but how do we measure a new citizen??? Example we buy shares in stock, we have to pay fair market value for the share. assuming we have 400 billions in reserve and 2 million locals, each Singaporean is valued at about 200k when it comes to a new citizen are they paying fair market price? are are these people worth sharing our reserves and resources with?? are we allowing them free dips, and diluting the "value" of a Singapore citizenship?? The ah lao was commenting that new citizens should pay 2 million per citizenship. or else he buay hock. your views?
  7. 8. Have to find a way to measure happiness.... Once that's settled, can we look back and say which things we spent money on are giving us the max HAPPINESS per $ spent? A good dinner of $200 per head made you happy for 1 hour of 8/10 of happiness? (10/10 means total happiness): this gives $200 divide by 8 = 25points.... A good tie for $100 but you wear it only say for 3 ocassions of 2 hours each and it gave you 8/10 happiness (total happiness = $100 divide by (2hrs x 3times x 8) = 100 divide by 48 = 2.08points... 2.08points means less dollars per happiness point compared with the $200 dinner........... win liao A flashy car costing $20k per year depreciation, add rdtx, insur, petrol etc, say $15k pa, giving us total cost 20 + 15 = $35k pa this is approx $3k per mth, $100 per day. Lets say we use the car 4hr a day, this gives us $25 per hr of use. If we derive 8/10 happiness from using the car, 25 divide by 8 = 3.13points.... cant beat good tie!! moral of the story: a good tie you like gives you max value for money in terms of HAPPINESS... (even if you only use it trice...)
  9. What good does it do, seriously? To me it is just some fancy paper exercise. Why don't they spent the time, energy and money to do something better? Like recruiting more folks, up the pay/benefits of existing POs, fighting crime with better means through technology? Last thing we want to hear is another innocent victim kena whacked till senseless but because it is a non-seizable offence the authorities will not take any action until a magistrate's complaint is filed and someone decides it warrants action? From CNA: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1137565/1/.html Police to measure "the cost of crime" By Leong Wee Keat, TODAY | Posted: 28 June 2011 0613 hrs SINGAPORE: In what will be the first study of its kind here, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) will commission an academic study to calculate the cost of the different types of crime committed here. Modelled after a United Kingdom (UK) government research paper - The Economic and Social Costs of Crime - the study plans to use a "social cost approach" to measure the cost of crime in Singapore. In response to Today's queries, police spokesperson Choo Hong Xian said the study "would provide valuable insights into operational policy-making, resource reallocation and police's strategies to deliver the mission". The police release statistics on the overall crime situation here every six months but they relate usually to the number of cases, identifying key crime concerns and providing crime prevention advisories. According to tender documents released last week, the study aims to derive the annual total cost of crime last year and "a preceding period stipulated" by the police. The final report from the study is expected to be delivered to the SPF within four months of the award of the tender, which closes on July 18. Overall crime here fell by 0.6 per cent last year but the police highlighted three key crime concerns - cheating cases involving rental scams and phone scams, fighting youth crime and outrage of modesty cases. The study aims to calculate the costs incurred as a consequence of crime, which includes "monetary loss in traditional terms" and "monetising the loss of life and trauma suffered by victims". Costs of crime prevention and enforcement will also be tallied. The study seeks to find out costs borne by private entities - such as security expenditure and insurance - as well as costs borne by public bodies such as proactive police patrols in anticipation of crime. The police also intend to calculate the costs incurred in response to crime - investigating cases, apprehending suspects as well as the costs expended by the State in prosecuting, convicting and incarcerating suspects. Several Members of Parliament had previously raised concerns over police resources being stretched. During the Committee of Supply debate in March, then-Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam pointed out that while police resources will be increased, "they are not limitless". While costs of crime prevention - such as installing alarm systems - and the State's response to crime could be measured, sociologist Paulin Straughan felt it might be "impossible" to measure the social costs of a spate of violence on a community. Social isolation and mistrust from these crimes would impact social capital on a community which would be difficult to estimate, she argued. However, the former Nominated Member of Parliament felt calculating the cost of crime would serve as "a reality check" for any society. "We live in a world that is driven by economics," Associate Professor Straughan said. "We can't understand or appreciate unless it is documented in dollars and cents. So, this is one way of documenting it (crime) in dollars and cents to show you that every burglary cost you this (amount)
  10. The newest attempt to cool the property market and stop short term speculation. From what I understand - Loan to Valuation lowered to 60%, 40% cash or CPF. Seller stamp duty raised to 16% on the 1st year sale, 12%, 8% and then 4% on subsequent years. Pretty big changes in the short term. http://www.mnd.gov.sg/newsroom/newsrelease...ews13012011.htm
  11. Just thinking out loud... Had some friends who in all appearances appear to be successful....but they are still staying in their parents house after marriage, even after they have kids. When I was younger, my dad used to tell me to be a true real man, the very basic is he has to buy and own his own house. While thoses friends of mine will say stuff like..."Oh my husband/I am a very filial child and thats why staying with parents". Then again, there is a difference, a great difference between staying with your parents VERSUS your parents staying with you. If that person is that great, he should have bought his own house (with his own money), invite his parents over and ask them sell the house and keep the money for their (his parents) own use. Hehe being diplomatic, of course I do not say such stuff to those friends. But personally I think no matter how successful they are, they still cannot make it. Whats your take on this?
  12. I no longer have any gym facility to use and am running the roads more. Problem is, it's very difficult to guage your distance unless you run on a route where you can drive to measure the distance. Am considering to get one of those watches that can do the above. I've come across Polar 200sd and the other higher Polar models. But it seem 200sd is the most economical but still costing something like usd250. Locally, it cost even more. I also thought of getting the Nike plus system as i already have the shoe. But the Nike shop told me all the stocks have been recalled as there's been a lot of complains for the 1st batch. Anyone out there have used such a gadget? Is the 200sd a weight on your wrist? How about the Pod that you attach to your shoe? Any other brands that i can consider? Tks in advance.
  13. How do you know your DIY shine is tip-top? Any benchmark or measurement to follow? Thank you. Regards,
  14. FRANKFURT (AFP) - - The German luxury carmaker BMW said Wednesday that a restructuring plan aimed at boosting profitability would see the overall elimination of 8,100 jobs worldwide. Part-time workers would be hit hardest, with 5,000 fewer posts, half of which had already been cut last year, a BMW spokesman told AFP. The other half would be let go by the end of 2008, he said. More than 3,000 full-time jobs would also disappear, including 2,500 in Germany and 600 in foreign distribution networks on the basis of voluntary departures or non-replacement of workers who retired, BMW board member Ernst Baumann said in a statement. BMW announced in late December a broad restructuring of its workforce as part of a plan to increase the profit on its cars, which have sold well but earned less for the group than rival Daimler makes with its Mercedes brand. "We are working on improving our margins" to maintain BMW in a competitive position, Baumann said. In September, BMW boss Norbert Reithofer unveiled a five-year plan dubbed "Number One" that was aimed at achieving a profit margin of between eight to 10 percent by 2012. The group wants to increase worker productivity, which is already growing, "by five to 10 percent yearly" the statement said. Because sales could be affected by a global economic slowdown, and the company hit by the euro's persistent strength against other major currencies, BMW planned to "adapt" its workforce. The plan was expected to cut costs by up to 500 million euros (750 million dollars) a year by 2009, the company reiterated, confirming a figure given in December. The German trade union IG Metall quickly slammed a "change in culture" by BMW managers. "Mister Baumann obviously believes that he can be a troublemaker and boost the share price by keeping workers permanently insecure," said a statement issued by Werner Neugebauer, head of the union's Bavarian chapter. Under a deal reached by the union with BMW, it can only reduce its workforce through voluntary departures, IG Metall said. "I don't think that 2,500 workers will voluntarily sign a release, and from what we hear from the work sites, they need part-time workers to build cars," Neugebauer added.
  15. Hi all, 1. I would like to measure the noise level of the cabin before and after sound proofing. Also good for measuring road noise before and changing tyres in the future. 2. Anyone know where I can a simple to use and reasonably priced dB tester? Thank you very much. Regards,
  16. Hi! Just a curious thought: (Nothing happen to me btw, but just wondering) I was discussing with a friend just now. Question : Is the accident investigator able to measure actual speed of car before impact? Example : Car A bansg into Car B. If Car A was going at, let's say 150km/hour; from the accident impact can they actually measure the speed the car A was traveling before the impact? Of course, driver A will say that he is travelling at legal speed limits. But just want to know how precise and accurate our accident investigators are in Singapore!
