  6. By the time a spacecraft leaves the last layer of Earth’s atmosphere, it no longer needs to be streamlined, because out in space there is very little air to provide any resistance. In fact, there are so few air molecules way “up there” that even the sun’s rays have nothing to reflect off – which is why outer space, as we know it, perpetually appears to be night. The air down here on Planet Earth consists predominantly of nitrogen and oxygen, with an average density of 1.2kg per cubic metre. That’s enough to reflect light and, yes, enough to create “buoyancy” for aeroplanes to fly on. It’s also enough to impede motion – an effect better known as aerodynamic resistance. AIR-SSENTIALS Air, like any gas or liquid, is technically classified as a fluid because it can flow over, below or around a solid object. In extreme conditions, fast-moving air (or a “full-blown” wind) can exert a tremendous force. That it can propel a sailboat illustrates the power of air in motion. Wind resistance and the behaviour of air around a moving car are critical aspects of automotive design, because they affect fuel economy, driving stability and cruising refinement. Motor vehicles, of course, travel on terra firma, but they still have to move through air. Any object moving along is opposing forces exerted by air, which increase as the speed of movement rises. The laws of physics have defined the drag (or resistance) due to air to be proportional to the square of the speed. What this means is that if the speed is doubled, drag increases by four times (i.e. 2 x 2), and if speed is tripled, drag increases by a factor of nine (i.e. 3 x 3), and so on. Drag consumes kinetic energy and compromises the car’s efficiency. AIR-BRACADABRA There are still plenty of unknowns that surround the scientific analysis of moving air. The underlying reason is that air, though gaseous in state, is nonetheless a fluid. In its worst form, such as a hurricane or a tornado, moving air has enough power to uproot trees and devastate buildings. Even today, the physical predictability of wind remains a dark science. There are very few “magicians” who know exactly how air behaves (or misbehaves) over a moving object, and they are somehow able to manipulate said behaviour. One of them is Adrian Newey, Red Bull F1’s chief engineer and possibly the world’s top automotive aerodynamicist. That Newey’s scalp is devoid of any turbulence-inducing hair might not be a mere coincidence! AIR-FFICIENCY A smooth, uninterrupted surface is practically impossible to achieve with a vehicle body because of the need for ventilation apertures, windscreens, windows, wheels and tyres, door handles, door mirrors etc, all of which are culprits of drag. And cars need to look good, or at least presentable. Seriously, would you drive an egg-on-wheels or an Audi R8? That is the conflict between dynamic styling and aerodynamic efficiency. There is yet another aspect of automotive aerodynamics that throws a spanner in the works – “aerodynamic instability”. While it’s true that a slick, low-drag shape is ideal for cutting cleanly through the air, the aerodynamic forces underneath, overhead and along the sides of the car give rise to lift, which is destabilising. It’s actually more complicated than that. Everywhere along the airstreams, various changes in characteristics take place, resulting in forces of different magnitude and direction acting at different places on the car. This is what causes instability and drag. For instance, air that fl ows over the bonnet and roof increases in velocity, and according to the physics of fl uid dynamics, an increase in velocity causes an inverse effect on pressure. Hence, on the upper surface of the car, there will be less force per unit area than under the car, where the air takes a less deviated route and thus experiences little or no drop in velocity. The nett force acts upwards, causing “lift”. At the same time, every surface on the vehicle that protrudes perpendicular to the direction of travel (basically everything you see head-on in 2-D) is drag-inducing. There is no running away from the fact that the various protrusions have a direct effect on drag. In other words, a smaller “face” and skinnier tyres create less aerodynamic resistance. AIR COMMAND Major motor manufacturers have spent hundreds of millions on wind-tunnel tests and facilities to develop aerodynamically effi cient vehicles. However, in order to alleviate the undesirable effects of moving air on a motorcar, certain compromises to outright aerodynamic efficiency have to be made. The cleanest car shapes in the business have barely any spoilers or fi ns – at least none that are visible. They are the result of top-notch wind tunnel work and fi rst-class engineering. Of course, coupes and supercars are much easier for aerodynamicists to “tune” compared to conventional saloons and SUVs, thanks to the sporty models’ lower frontal areas, tapering extremities, and smaller gaps between the undercarriage and the tarmac. Regardless of body shape and product type, an automaker that can take command of the air, so to speak, will be able to optimise both aerodynamic efficiency and overall stability.     We all need heroes. People we look up to for inspiration and motivation. Humans that we place on pedestals to be admired and maybe even emulated. Die-hard Formula One enthusiasts are no different. They would like to believe that their favourite drivers got into the sport purely because of God-given talent, or steely determination and hard work that have paid off. Unfortunately, as long as we have been faithfully following the sport, this has never been the case. Don’t get me wrong– many of the famous racers who have made their mark in F1 earned their FIA Super Licence (the qualification needed to race) because they were faster than the other hopefuls around a racetrack. But the astronomical cost of running anF1 team means outfit that want to remain in the sport have to rely on whatever financial sources are available. And these include drivers who bring large amounts of sponsorship dollars with them. Many pundits have equated F1 to the ultimate carnival ride. It beats the best roller coaster in the world, and all younger for the ride of your life is a huge bank account (preferably with a minimum of eight digits) – and some driving ability. Of the 24 racers who competed at last year’s F1 World Championship, six are “pay drivers”. These lucky pilots secured their places purely because they poured millions into the coffers of their respective teams. In comparison, Force India’s Adrian Sutil was the only pay driver back in 2008. While F1 remains highly profitable for its rights holder, Bernie Ecclestone, the teams aren’t recession-proof. Top outfits such as Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes can call upon the enormous wealth of their carmaker “parents” but poorer constructors, lower down the standings have to rely on whatever monies they can obtain. Hence, drivers are being asked to pay for their seats with substantial sponsorship deals. Sitting atop 2012’s list of pay drivers is Pastor Maldonado. The Venezuelans worth an estimated $88 million to Williams. Most of this comes from his country’s national oil company, PDVSA. It’s worth noting that Maldonado is a good buddy of Venezuelan president, Hugo Chavez. As they say, having friends in high places comes with benefits. Maldonado’s teammate Bruno Senna might share his surname with his supertalented uncle Ayrton, but even such aniconic association would most probably not have secured the Brazilian a seat if not for the $23.5m in sponsorship he brought to the table. Most of this came from billionaire countryman Eike Batista– the chairman of Brazilian oil and gas conglomerate EBX Group. It’s no wonder there wasn’t room at Williams for Rubens Barrichello, the driver who has competed in the most Grand Prix races. Italian Jarno Trulli is another veteran that lost his seat the same way. Caterham brought in Vitaly Petrov as his replacement. Petrov, who is backed by a few wealthy Russian corporations including petrochemical giant Sibur, is rumoured to have paid almost $24m to the Malaysian-owned team. As for the remaining three pay drivers, Sauber was a willing recipient of the bag of Mexican gold (courtesy of telecommunications company Telex) Sergio Perez was hauling around, while closer to the bottom of the paddock, HRTtook in Narain Karthikeyan and CharlesPic bought his way into Marussia. Both added roughly $10m each to the treasure chests of their respective teams. It is worth noting that Pic’s sponsorship came by way of his well-heeled mother. She runs a transport business and owns an estimated 6, 000 trucks in France. “If I was just a pay driver, I would never have taken my first podium at the 2011 Australian Grand Prix,” said Petrov during an interview. The Russian also fi nished the 2009 GP2 Series in second position overall. Maldonado went one better in 2010, securing the drivers’ crown, while Pic finished fourth in 2011. They are talented to some degree, but it was ultimately money that spoke the loudest when they negotiated with the teams. So, will there be more pay drivers in F1? Otmar Szafnauer, chief operating officer of Force India said that teams have no choice but to look at various options, depending on their financial well-being. “It’s all about a trade-off. If you have the money, you can sign the best driver. But if you don’t, a pay driver with a lot of sponsorship money, which can then be used to improve the performance of therace cars, is no bad thing. All teams want to scale the drivers’ and constructors ’standings – and sometimes, they can do it better with a driver who brings money than with one that comes without any sponsors,” said Szafnauer. Christian Horner, Red Bull’s team principal, said: “Financially, it’s tough for everyone. But I feel that we should be given more credit for the way we have been investing in young drivers. Danie Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne from our sister outfi t Toro Rosso would never have raced in Formula Three without our help. I am happy that other teams see the merits in our philosophy (of grooming young racers). Ferrari has a drivers ‘academy, while McLaren have been devoting time and money in some young karters. And it has worked wonders for the latter with Lewis (Hamilton). “But there are difficult times ahead, and we must still look at more ways to make it more affordable for all teams – particularly those that are towards the rear of the grid. “ There’s always the worry that if the shortage of money becomes too acute, it might pave the way for more pay drivers to enter the sport. And this will lead to a decline in racing standards. Despite this, not all pay drivers are hopeless. Three-time world champ Niki Lauda started his F1 career with March in 1972 by bringing huge sack of money to the British outfit. He did so again when he joined BRM the following year. Even the most successful F1 driver of all time, Michael Schumacher, entered his first Grand Prix (with Jordan) only after the German’s sponsors, Mercedes-Benz, paid the team what was rumoured to be around $200,000.   9. More and more of these night drivers who got special night vision it seems. Never on headlights I feel manufacturers should have in the cars the autolights as a premanent fixture. MEaning, no on/off switch. When it detects a certain level of darkness, the lights come on automatically. Case in point. Mercedes has no on switch for the lights. I cannot switch off the lights as the only option I have it so turn on the lights on a bright day. Else, get in the car, the lights come on automatically. This would really be a boon. However, still feel some wisecrack, 'want to save bulbs' idiot will go workshop disable...knn Your thoughts?

Business Times - 12 Jan 2012 Closure of wealth manager ipac hits S'pore, HK clients Unwinding of AXA unit's US$500m portfolio assets may extend into Q2 By GENEVIEVE CUA (SINGAPORE) The closure of the wealth manager ipac Singapore and Hong Kong is expected to impact clients with combined portfolio assets of roughly US$500 million. In addition to the shock of closure, clients are likely to have to redeem a substantial amount - about US$300 million - from ipac Dublin-domiciled SIS portfolios, which ipac aims to close. SIS is ipac's proprietary multi-manager series of funds. However Gary Harvey, ipac Singapore's chief executive, took pains to emphasise that the process of unwinding may differ among clients, depending on their decisions. Those who wish to stay with their ipac advisers may be able to do so, as ipac aims to help those advisers to find alternative employment with other firms or institutions. ipac Singapore has a staff of 'just under 50' in Singapore. 'I am very conscious that in the current economic and turbulent market environment, customers will be worried about their investments when they hear the word 'closure'. We're proactively communicating to give them comfort around (the process).' Seven SIS funds have an estimated asset value of roughly US$300 million. The closure of the funds is expected to take around four to five months. Uncertainty had swirled around ipac for more than a year, since AXA began moves to restructure its Asia-Pacific insurance business, of which ipac was a part. AXA sold the Australian and New Zealand business to AMP last year, and retained the Asia-Pacific business. While it had great confidence in its core insurance growth in the region, the financial advisory business was said to be loss making and AXA's commitment to that segment was unclear. ipac Australia has been transferred to AMP. AXA announced the closure of the ipac operations in Hong Kong and Singapore on Monday. It said 'the divestiture of these fee-based financial planning businesses would be consistent with its ambition to focus on continuing the strong growth of its insurance businesses in Asia'. ipac Taiwan will continue to operate as it expects synergies with a prospective life insurance licence there, said Mr Harvey. 'For Hong Kong and Singapore, we didn't see the same level of synergy...' ipac's closure is a blow to the local FA space, where growth is believed to have stagnated amid a more difficult operating environment. Not only are firms grappling with sharply volatile and downtrending markets, but they also have to comply with new rules on the sale of investment products. For ipac in particular, profits have been elusive since it began in 2003. In the fiscal year 2010, it reported an after-tax loss of $4.5 million. This was a slight improvement from 2008 and 2009 where losses came to $5.9 million and $5.6 million respectively. Its cumulative loss as at 2010 was a staggering $33.9 million. ipac had begun operations here with much fanfare. It hoped to make a success of an advice-centric model, where advisers are paid salaries rather than through product commissions. Clients are charged a portfolio advisory fee. This model is supposed to better align adviser interests with customers'. But its high overheads - salaries plus a prime Raffles Place office - made the business unsustainable. The firm is now seeking to redeploy its staff within AXA, or to find new jobs for them elsewhere. The total staff in Singapore and Hong Kong is 80, including support staff. 'What we aim to do is to work with advisers to find them new homes, and work with clients and advisers together to find new relationships. 'The key point is client wishes. We will have some clients who may say - it's OK, I have another adviser... Or, we may have people who say I'd like to move with my adviser. Subject to the adviser finding a new FA firm or bank, we would help them to move across.' He added: 'We envisage the process will take time, well into the second quarter.'

  14. 1. I'm of the thought that door protectors strips are important to cut down on the number of dings on your car doors. Personally, I felt that center door protectors seem more effective than those cars with a buttom door protectors. Of course, there are also some that don't come with any door protectors at all. 2. I wonder what is the rationale of some car manufacturers having door protectors that are mounted at the buttom of the doors? Do you know? Regards,
  15. Would you reject your new car if there is foglight(but the showroom model and brochure did not state it as standard). Or maybe pay some extra money to the dealer for the additional foglight? Whould anyone reject the car because of a new item in their car during collection which was not mentioned by the salemans/brochure, like foglights, anti-dazzle rearview mirror, folding side mirror, original carpets, upsize rims/tyre grade,vanity mirror on passenger side, sunglass holder, Hood insualtion, roof rack, maintenance free battery, steering wheel with radio control, cruise control? From my experiences, mostly conti cars have slight features that differs from each shipment, so much so that even salesman is hard press to 100% confirm your car specs unless its those stocks that are already in the yard.

  17. Yes you heard it. Somebody has made a turbo kit for the 1.6L Aveo in the US. Have to wait till the show starts then can see from what I heard. There will be custom bracket for nitrous solenoids and length lines. Front and rear strut bars as well. Yummy! Forgot to add, turbo is up to 6psi. So I would say, it qualifies as an LPT. Oh yes, I forgot to add. The Lanos 1.6L DOHC 16V engine is the same as the US Aveo's. This engine with the right ECU will produce 150HP using the stock components. No need for forced induction. If put in forced induction......must install all round disc rotors and upgrade ABS and install traction control .
