When one thinks of Godzilla movies, one imagines an oversized amphibious dinosaur generating a terrifying heat ray from its mouth and fighting with other oversized monsters. Meh, nothing special, right? Wrong. Here’s why Godzilla Minus One should be an action movie you should definitely catch. In this version, the timeless clash between monster and man is once again set against the tumultuous backdrop of post-war Japan. But, unlike typical action films that dive headfirst into destruction and battle scenes, this movie takes a surprisingly introspective turn. Yes, it’s on Netflix. No, I won’t spoil anything for you. The story delves deep into the emotional and psychological scars left by World War Two, at a time when Japan was grappling with the aftermath of devastation. It's a poignant exploration of a nation attempting to rebuild not only its cities but its very soul. What's truly compelling to me about Godzilla Minus One is its commitment to human stories amidst the chaos. The film introduces you to characters shaped by tragedy and driven by a desire for survival and renewal. Their paths intertwine with the looming threat of Godzilla, providing a narrative that is rich with emotional depth. As the film unfolds, you are invited to witness the human struggle from various angles: A soldier haunted by his past mistakes, a young woman searching for hope amidst the post-war ruins, and families torn apart and seeking solace within the remnants of their former lives. It is also pretty refreshing to see post-World War Two from a Japanese perspective. We mostly see the action and fighting from the American perspective, which can get pretty stale, pretty fast. ~ Fremont (Images by Wallpaper Abyss/Alpha Coders)

I’ve always held a keen interest in the armies of the world, the wars that raged, and the weapons used. Therefore, I usually appreciate a movie (preferably an action film) if there’s an army element and lots and lots of bullets involved. Well, Battle Los Angeles (2011) doesn’t disappoint. With explosive battles and intense drama, you find yourself rooting for a group of resilient Marines tasked with defending Los Angeles from an alien invasion force. And yes, it’s on Netflix (for now), and no, I won’t spoil the plot for you. The film unravels in modern-day Los Angeles, which turns into a battlefield when alien invaders descend upon Earth. Major cities around the globe fall one by one, and Los Angeles suddenly looks close to being next on the list. The stakes couldn't be higher as a platoon of U.S. Marines steps up to defend the metropolis from overwhelming extraterrestrial forces. Led by the Staff Sergeant Michael Nantz, played by Aaron Eckhart (who you might know from Olympus Has Fallen, London Has Fallen, and Midway), this plucky group of Marines embark on a mission that drastically changes with the circumstances. You might recognise famous celebrities such as Michelle Rodriguez (Letty from Fast and Furious), Ne-Yo (so sick of love songs, but not action films apparently), Michael Pena (Diller from 12 Strong, another must-watch war flick), and a young Joey King. Personally, I’m not sure why this movie ranked as low as it did on Rotten Tomatoes. As someone who likes a military element and a decent plot, this didn’t disappoint. ~ Fremont (Images by Wallpaper Abyss/Alpha Coders)

23 years on, Infernal Affairs remains the best gangster movie I've watched
jeresinex posted a blog entry in MyAutoBlog
TL;DR It's over two decades old, but Infernal Affairs remains THE gangster trilogy. *SPOILERS AHEAD* *SPOILERS AHEAD* *SPOILERS AHEAD* The Hong Kong Police and a triad have placed moles in each other's ranks. Tony Leung is Chan Wing Yan, an undercover cop desperate to leave his assignment. The antagonist is Senior Inspector Lau Kin Ming (Andy Lau), a decorated policeman who is actually a mole for Hon Sam (Eric Tsang), a triad boss. It's a game of cat-and-mouse, with policemen and gangsters trying to uncover the moles before their opponents do. Setting the stage Infernal Affairs is a trilogy. To me, it requires three movies to finish telling the story. Infernal Affairs is the main story, but it needs Infernal Affairs 2 for context. It explains the characters' history and the events that shaped them. Others complain that Infernal Affairs 3 is "bad". It is not. It brings closure to the tale. Without it, the villain never gets his comeuppance. In this context, Infernal Affairs 3 is neither short on emotionality nor poignant moments. I have watched the trilogy at least five times, and after each viewing, I still learn something new. There are nuances and subtleties that can only be gleaned with each viewing. That is a hallmark of a well-told story. It's too much to cover all three movies in one post, so instead, I'm highlighting seven moments from the first film that I found unforgettable. 1) An unending assignment Wing Yan is ordered to undergo psychiatry sessions to deal with his anger-management issues or face jail time. Exasperated, he yells at SP Wong (Anthony Wong), reminding him that this assignment was originally three years, but it's been almost 10. Wing Yan lives a double life: As a gangster, the police chase him. As a mole, gangsters are after him. It's unending psychological and emotional torture. Sam smashes open Wing Yan's cast 2) Tap... tap-tap... tap-tap-tap... During operations, Wing Yan and SP Wong communicate using morse code to avoid bugs and circumvent the fact that they can't call or text each other. As the deal between Sam and the Thai traffickers goes down, SP Wong stands with his eyes closed. At the triad hideout, Wing Yan stares pensively out the window. Our eyes are drawn to the cast on his arm. At the scene's climax, the police ambush Keung (Chapman To), one of Sam's henchmen, as he carries bags of cocaine ashore. Sam yells at him over the phone to dump them. The deal falls through. Sam glares at his men, his seething gaze an attempt to uncover the traitor. As Wing Yan begins to speak, Sam grabs his injured arm and smashes it on a table to shatter the cast, suspecting that it contains a bug. It's empty; Wing Yan's cover is intact. Later, we see the mic taped outside the grubby window he'd been staring out of. Nobody suspected his finger-tapping to be morse code. Kin Ming executes his boss 3) Betraying his boss One of the most brutal scenes in Infernal Affairs is when Kin Ming betrays Sam. The police ambush Sam in a multi-storey carpark and Sam flees on foot, desperation on his face. Sam calls Kin Ming. The sound of a ringing handphone pierces the silence, echoing off the concrete walls. Kin Ming appears and shoots Sam dead, revealing him as a two-faced, cold-blooded and remorseless killer who stops at nothing to get what he wants. Sam was a criminal, but he was also a father figure. But Kin Ming executed him without a second thought. 4) Keung was undercover, too Keung was shot and mortally wounded during the gun battle between the cops and the triads. He and Wing Yan flee. Behind the wheel, Keung grows visibly weaker. He loses control and crashes the car. Dying, he tells Wing Yan that Sam said, "Whoever didn't show up today was the mole. I didn't tell him you went for a massage." Keung was a loud and sometimes naive character. But the surprise is that he was a police mole, as confirmed by the news report in a subsequent scene. Mary makes a painful allusion to Kin Ming 5) Mary learns the truth Mary (Sammi Cheng) is Kin Ming's fiancé and a writer. Kin Ming comes home and sees Mary sitting on the steps, visibly upset. The sampler CD plays Forgotten Time by Tsai Chin. Suddenly, a recording of a conversation between Sam and King Ming plays. Mary says she can't finish her novel because she can't decide whether the main character is good or bad. Tearfully alluding to her fiancé, she says, "I think only he knows." 6) SP Wong dies Wing Yan's expression is priceless. In that moment, his whole world came crashing down – SP Wong is the last and only person in the department who knows Wing Yan's true identity as an undercover cop. It is a look of despondent horror. For the first time, his character knows not what to do. The iconic rooftop scene between the villain and the hero 7) Wing Yan dies Wing Yan arrested and handcuffed Kin Ming following their rooftop meeting, but suddenly, another policeman confronts them, gun drawn. Using Kin Ming as a shield, Wing Yan backs into the lift. But as he turns his head, he provides a small opening to the cop, who shoots him. It turns out the other cop is also a triad mole. The lift descends as gunshots ring out. The doors open to a bloody scene: The other mole also lies dead; Kin Ming shows his warrant card to the waiting policemen. There are many other moments in Infernal Affairs that are equally memorable, from the revelation that Wing Yan has a daughter to confessing to the psychiatrist that he's actually a policeman (it was painfully obvious he was serious but he pretended it was a joke) to Wing Yan's funeral. But these seven struck me the most and are ultimately the ones that made me eager to watch the next instalment. -

God bless him. Real big heart in doing his part for the needy. In cool weather, restaurant owner delivers blankets to those sleeping on the streets in Chinatown 1 of 2 Mr Francis Ng (left) delivering a blanket to carpenter Chua Yong Sia, 61, who has been sleeping homeless in Chinatown for the last few years.PHOTO: LIM MIN ZHANG PUBLISHED5 HOURS AGO UPDATED43 MIN AGO FACEBOOK1,993TWITTEREMAIL Lim Min Zhang SINGAPORE - While many are sleeping comfortably at home in the cool weather, some people spending the night on the streets get by without a blanket. The sight of an old man in Chinatown shivering while trying to sleep moved Mr Francis Ng to action last week. Since last Thursday (Jan 4), the restaurant owner has been giving out blankets to those sleeping on the streets, mainly in mature estates such as Tiong Bahru, Redhill and Toa Payoh. He estimated that he has given out more than 100 blankets so far. They cost around $10 per piece. In the early hours of a rainy Saturday morning (Jan 13), The Straits Times followed Mr Ng, 44, on his solo mission to do good. In about an hour, he delivered nine blankets in Chinatown to mostly elderly men. Some of them lie on benches and reclining chairs, while make do with a piece of cardboard on the ground. The heartwarming act came amid the cool spell in recent days.

[MORE] SMRT failed to seek necessary approval before agreeing to provide the service mail print View all 9 comments BY JOY FANG [email protected] PUBLISHED: 11:05 PM, AUGUST 26, 2014 SINGAPORE — The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is looking into taking action against SMRT, for letting Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) charter five of its trains to transport students and staff to the Schools National C Division rugby final match held today (Aug 26) at the National Stadium. The public transport operator had failed to seek the necessary approval from the authorities, an LTA spokesperson said in response to media queries. Under its licence to operate the Circle Line, SMRT must obtain approval if it wishes to provide train services that are not open to the public. “In this case, SMRT did not seek our approval before agreeing to provide the service. We are looking into the appropriate action to take. We have also reminded SMRT that its primary focus must be to ensure good service delivery to the commuting public at large,” the LTA spokesperson said. TODAY understands that for all MRT lines, approval from the authorities is required if a public transport operator wishes to offer services beyond its core business of providing train services to the public. When contacted, SMRT did not say if it knew that it had to seek approval. It had previously worked with schools in chartering trains to transport students for large-scale events over the years, including for the National Education Shows during National Day Parade rehearsals. Requests are reviewed on a case-by case basis and generally, the schools should be within walking distance to stations and the destination needs to be on the same train line. SMRT also stressed that no passenger services were affected and train intervals were maintained at “normal service levels at all times”. Chartered trains are injected in between normal train services and run only within off-peak hours. It added that only one-way services were provided to ACS (I), as the return journey would have taken place during peak hours. It is understood that the chartered trains would not have been in service during off-peak hours. ACS (I) had chartered the trains to transport 3,000 of its students and staff to the rugby match, which was the first school final to be held at the new National Stadium at the Sports Hub. The move provoked a flurry of both dismay and support from the public, with some questioning whether some schools were getting special treatment and whether SMRT could have put the additional trains to better use for the public. Others felt it was an efficient way of transporting students without affecting road traffic. ACS (I) principal Winston Hodge had told The Straits Times that it would have taken at least 80 buses to transport its staff and students, and the trains were a “cost-efficient” way of getting them to the Sports Hub. Neither the school nor SMRT revealed the cost, but it reportedly came to S$2 a head. The students were to travel directly from one-north station to Stadium station on the Circle Line. The match saw ACS (I) beat defending champions Saint Andrew’s Secondary 28 to 8. CEO of SMRT is ex ACS boy from the reports

A People's Action Party MP called on his organisation to consider legal action yesterday after "vicious" edits were made to its Wikipedia page. Tampines GRC MP Baey Yam Keng spoke out after a user of the website changed the name of the party to "Party Against People" and added lines such as "down with the fascists" and "vote for Opposition" into the text. According to the page's publicly available editing history, the user who first made the changes appeared to have done so on Wednesday afternoon under the name "AlikVesilev". The user claimed that "proof of (the PAP's) suppression of freedom of speech" was demonstrated by the sacking of blogger Roy Ngerng by Tan Tock Seng Hospital this week, a move later backed by the Ministry of Health. - See more at: http://www.straitstimes.com/news/singapore/more-singapore-stories/story/vicious-edits-paps-wikipedia-page-20140613#sthash.itb2GvC9.dpuf

This is really bad.... http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1244331/1/.html even channelnewsasia reported the story. Bottomline is PAP Town councils SOLD their computer system for $140000 to aim and promised to Pay Aim a Monthly Fee of $785 per town council to use their software. There are so many red flags that I am really worried for Singapore 1) There is only ONE BIDDER in the entire tender, Quote from CNA "Dr Teo said although five companies collected the tender agreement, the sole bid was submitted by AIM, a company fully owned by the P A P. " 2) sold for $140 000? what are they smoking? how much did they spend to develop that software? My brother has a startup that makes encryption software for cloud computing and I tell you, $140k is not going last very long. 3) $785 monthly fee per TC? with 14 PAP TCs that works out to $131880 a year! Sold their software for $140k and lease it back at $132k a year??? This is totally ridiculous. 4) How many Employees does Aim has? What is their contact number? They don't even have an address. Did they do ANYTHING at all? This is really bad... if PAP does not get to the bottom of this....

The Competition Commission of Singapore (CCS) is taking 13 motor vehicle traders to task for anti-competitive actions. In a statement on Thursday afternoon, the Commission accused the traders of contravening the Competition Act. The group was said to have engaged in an anti-competitive agreement to suppress bids at public auctions of motor vehicles. The CCS said that the infringing conduct involved bid-rigging through an agreement to suppress bids at these auctions, which has the "object of preventing, restricting or distorting competition".
